Military Base in Germany somewhere.

This is my second ever Urbex hotel; sleeping at an abandoned location…

We arrived here by car in the middle of the night and set up camp on the terrace of one of these buildings. It wasn’t very cold so all we had to lay out were sleeping bags and we could sleep underneath the moonlit sky.

Before we went to sleep we walked around the area and in the middle of some bushes we saw this giant statue of Lenin which had red sprayed eyes, thus quite the evil look…. We heard these slammin’ doors we thought, a loud bang once every half an hour or so. But it wasn’t that windy… This freaked us out a little. We never really found out what that sound was, but we don’t think it could have been the wind.

The next morning we woke up by the rising sun, that was really nice. This was also the very first morning of our 4 day weekend trip in Germany. Starting it off with a sunny day, well you just can’t wish for anything better.

We had some coffee and started looking around and taking pictures. Then at some point one of us bumped into a security guard doing his round. We sent some text (seen as all four of us had spread out over the area), met back at our little base, packed up and made ready for the final exit sprint! The last 20 meters we had a car behind us trying to chase us out. But we managed to climb the fence in time, jump into the car and drive away…. Phew

Months later I had a nightmare about this night. We got caught on the terrain and were wearing bulletproof vsts. Then we escaped and we were chased out of this military base by an army tank. Mad scary!

Excellent! Very rich! I'm new to vegan baking but not cooking.

I used Sugar in the Raw Turbinado sugar, unsweetened Walmart brand applesauce, packed Trader Joe's organic brown sugar, earth balance original (wanted to do the soy-free but Walmart was out), and Trader Joe's semi-chocolate chips. I cooked them on parchment paper and moved the parchment paper and cookies to a cooling rack after taking from the oven.

The usual non-vegan cookie recipe I usually use is Toll house. I usually sub out butter with butter-flavored crisco for a soft cookie. When I would use butter, it would spread and be crispier. So that's where I come from.

I followed exactly as written and took them out at 10 minutes. I like a soft cookie. They hardened up with cooling. The color is darker than the usual non-vegan version but that's probably because the raw sugar is dark. And there's a gritty sugary texture because of the turbinado. Also, it's crispier on the edges. I'm guessing the crispier on the edges because of Earth Balance. I'd like to try with a finer vegan white sugar but it seems turbinado is good for holding moisture. I've had vegan cookies that crumble like a fiend so would rather not have crumble cookie syndrome and switching might do that.

I've got them in the fridge now so will be very curious how well they do with storage.

Served with almond milk. Only non-dairy milk that I've found I can drink straight.

Madonna of Piazza Grande (1604)

The Statue, requested by the people of Pavia, was put in place in 1604 in the heart of the city on the outside of the town hall building and was regarded with special devotion by the local people and above all by merchants and artisans. Made from rare, highly resistant materials (including sand from the river Ticino) the Madonna remained on the outside of the Broletto building for nearly three centuries, until 1872, at which time, in a climate of strong social conflict, it was taken to the crypt of the nearby cathedral.

In the 1980s a Pavia local, Professoressa Anna Maria De Paoli Garofoli, sparked renewed interest in the story of the Madonna of Piazza Grande by the press, the authorities and the local people of Pavia, 7,800 of whom asked for it to be returned to its original location.

In 1992 the statue, perfectly restored by the spontaneously established Committee for the Madonna of Piazza Grande, was solemnly moved to the cathedral and shown to the city.

On the 21st of December 2002 the Madonna was returned to the Broletto, giving back to the city a work of great beauty and extraordinary significance for the people of Pavia.

A song of the House Wren (and other birds songs) is (are) at the following adress:

www.xeno-canto.org/browse.php?query=&pagenumber=&...

The House Wren, Troglodytes aedon, is a small songbird of the wren family.

Their breeding habitat is semi-open areas from Canada to southernmost South America. The tropical forms from southern Mexico southwards are sometimes considered a separate species, the Southern House Wren, Troglodytes musculus. Birds on the Falkland Islands are now often considered to be an endemic species, Cobb's Wren, Troglodytes cobbi. North American birds migrate to the southern United States and Mexico.

This bird usually builds a large cup nest in various sorts of cavities, either natural or man-made, often using bird houses where they are available, and sometimes choosing unusual sites such as old shoes. The female incubates the clutch of three to six red-blotched cream-white eggs for 14-15 days, and the naked young take another 16-19 days to fledge.

House Wrens are known to occationally destroy the eggs of other birds nesting in their territory by breaking the eggshell.

Adults are 11.5 cm long and weigh 12 g. They have brown or grey-brown upperparts with pale grey-brown underparts; there are black bars on the flanks, wings and tail. They have an eye ring, a faint line over the eye, a short thin bill and pink legs.

There are regional variations in the appearance of this bird. The subspecies found on Tobago, T. a. tobagensis is larger and has much paler underparts than the mainland forms.

These birds forage actively in vegetation. They mainly eat insects such as butterfly larvae, also spiders and snails.

This bird's rich bubbly song is commonly heard during the nesting season but rarely afterwards. The birds can be encouraged to nest in gardens in their range by offering nest boxes with hole small enough to prevent competitive cavity nesters.

The House Wren may have been displaced somewhat in some northern parts of its range by the introduction of the House Sparrow but is still common and widespread throughout most of the two continents. In North America, they are thought to achieve their highest densities in floodplain forests in the western great plains where they use woodpecker holes as nesting sites.

The wrens are passerine birds in the mainly New World family Troglodytidae. There are 79 species of true wrens, though the name is also ascribed to other unrelated birds throughout the world.

Troglodyte means "cave-dweller," and the wrens get their scientific name from the tendency of some species to forage in dark crevices. They are mainly small and inconspicuous except for their loud songs. These birds have short wings and a thin down-turned bill. Several species often hold their tails upright. All are insectivorous.

Only one species, Troglodytes troglodytes, known as the Winter Wren in North America, occurs in the Old World, where it is commonly known simply as the "Wren."

The 27 Australasian wren species in the family Maluridae are unrelated, as are the New Zealand wrens in the family Acanthisittidae.

Pleeeeeeeeeeease.

Today I was with family for an early easter get-together/late birthday gift giving because my grandfather, aunt and I are the only ones that have birthdays at the beginning of the year and that always gets messed up. Nearly EVERYONE else's birthdays are around september, which used to make me sad as a kid because I would never get my gifts around the same time as everyone else, and I basically had to sit around when all of my cousins were getting things and be polite and shut my mouth. xD I don't mind it anymore at all (but i was a kid and i was a pouty little thing sometimes, haha!). I got more money for crafty stuff. Yay! Thank you Aunt Jane. =D

So anyway, off with that rambling. My step-grandmother took us to her "southern mansion" (as she calls it; it's more like an antique store gone wrong) to show us her reupholstering jobs. The outside is fabulous, though i totally spaced taking a decent picture. So the next few pictures will be from this place, along with the songs that have plagued me throughout the course of the day. xD

This happens to be today's theme song, somehow. It's been stuck in my head and I've been singing and listening to it all day. I've loved it for years.

You'll walk unscathed through musket fire,

No ploughman's blade will cut thee down,

No cutless wound will mark thy face

And you will be my ain true love,

And you will be my ain true love

And as you walk through death's dark veil,

The cannon's thunder can't prevail,

And those who hunt thee down will fail,

And you will be my ain true love,

And you will be my ain true love.

Asleep inside the cannon's mouth,

The captain cries, "Here comes the rout,"

They'll seek to find me north and south,

I've gone to find my ain true love.

The field is cut and bleeds to red.

The cannon balls fly round my head,

The infirmary man may count me dead,

When I've gone to find my ain true love,

I've gone to find my ain true love.

The title on the Russian site devoted to SPG is – Rafts on the [Catherine] Canal: city of Shlisselburg.

A little poking around on the internet reveals that this is unlikely to be the Catherine canal (which runs between the Volkhov and Syas rivers, says Wikipedia), and is more likely the Peter Canal, that is the section built during the time of Peter the Great. That section of the canal had two locks, one of which we can see in the background, along with boats waiting to enter. You can find this locale on Google Earth, in "street view," much changed of course, where the Russian label tells us it is part of the Marinskii waterway, which is true, but only in a general sense. You can see on Google Earth too, that, over the years, the canal has silted up and filled in, and in places has actually been narrowed by builders needed good footings for their constructions. Another page I found said that the stonework we see on the locks and banks dates from the time of the canal's original construction (late 1720s) another that it dates from repairs and renovations done in 1836; the Wikipedia article doesn't note any work done in the 1830s, so my guess is that this stonework – which still endures, and looks to be in pretty good shape – is the same built by battalions of Peter's soldiers in the eighteenth century.

Note, in the right background, two huge stacks of logs, as high as the buildings next to them, and just as long, a truly immense stockpile. I wonder whether the logs in the foreground are about to join one of those huge piles (likely) or whether they have been taken from the piles (less likely). My guess would be that they are piled up there until they can be loaded on a transport and taken to a mill that is closer to a larger population centre, but that is speculation on my part.

This was a difficult shot to register because the logs moved around on the water as SPG took his three shots. People in the background moved; boats lining up to get into the lock moved; and one of the two fellows in the foreground took a quick look around to see if SPG was finished yet. So I had to do a lot of piece by piece compositing of sections of the shot to get everything to more or less line up. Lots of figures in the middle distance and in the faraway existed only as coloured blobs on one plate or another, so in several cases, I simply erased those partial figures from the shot. A red colour cast at the bottom of the shot proved more problematic, but I have reduced it as much as I can.

Update, 2014: I've gone over the shot one more time, trying to reduce the purple tones, to adjust the contrast on the logs, and reduce some of the fringing on the cloud images reflected in the water. I think, for now, this is the best I can do.

Update, 2024: Another revision, courtesy of Photoshop's updated tools, particularly using the Camera Raw filter.

I don't know but for some reason, I'm not feeling like my usual self today. I mean,

while at work I was playing cards with co-workers.. pretty fun.. But after I left, I felt down. I tried listening to some music but couldn't cheer myself up. plus they're the same repeated songs I've been listening to for the past 3 weeks. I don't own an iPod. I play my music from my phone so its pretty hard to be uploading and downloading songs with a busy schedule.

I have this mini shoot with one of Juan's friends tomorrow. First one I'm getting paid. I think this feeling is because of that. I don't understand why I'm feeling so gloomy. Usually when i go out on photo shoots, I get all excited. I don't know. I told myself I'll let this pass. Hopefully I'll feel better before tomorrow.

So I got home from work. I decided on buying new LED flashlights and a Bulb flashlight for my dad. When I got back, I wanted to test them out. I first thought of a self portrait but since it was still daytime, too bright. I grabbed my Kalimar 50mm and used it as my model instead. I had 4 LED flashlights, two in the front and 2 in the back, left and right. and one Bulb light on my left facing at an angle.. After a couple of shots, I got this one.. I'll post the setup below..

I thought of my cam to cheer me up a bit.. and it did =]] but theres always tomorrow...

1 x 580 EXII Bare Camera Left Full Power

Triggered by Pocket Wizard II's (That kept failing, AARGH!!)

I got to spend the day with my dearest and closest friend Kristen, who I only get to see maybe twice a year now. She is off in Waterloo getting all smart to become an optometrist, and when she came back for the holidays, I knew we had to try and shoot something.

I had figured doing some christmas light bokeh with my 135 f|2, but Kristen suggested that we drive out to Kananaskis and shoot near the upper and lower lakes. It was a perfectly clear day when we were driving out there and we had tried to plan it around the sunset, but when we arrived, the sky was fairly cloudy, and it was as if the sunset didn't even happen. It was light and then it got dark. WTF?

So we tried to make the best of it and for the second day in a row, my pocket wizards kept failing! Out of 80 shots, only 32 triggered the flash. I had worked out that it wasn't the recycle time, or the pc sync cables. I had to be within 10' and I could only shoot horizontal, as soon as I tried to shoot in vertical it would not trigger! I need to try some tests in a controlled environment to figure out what the hell is going on.

She was really good to stand there while I was pulling my hair out trying to get it going, but I could tell she was getting really cold so we packed it in. Maybe we will get to try again when she is back in the summer.

Best_viewed_on_black_here.

Walking around the beach after sunset, between the crumbling cliffs, hemmed in by the tide I was looking for one last photo before I headed back up the wooded valley away from the coast. I noticed these three pebbles grouped together at the edge of the limestone pavement with the fresh water stream that runs down through the valley and across the beach to the sea flowing over them. The late evening soft pink glow of the sky made the rock below seem to glow itself and the round stones and blurred water seemed to me the perfect compliment to the soft light.

I would have liked to have spotted this scene earlier while the sun was still above the horizon and it's light was caught in the water making every drop sparkle. Although I'm not certain that this lighting would have suited the scene so well it would have been nice to compare and contrast the two lighting conditions. Maybe next time, although these pebbles will surely be long gone by then.

It's amazing how it coil in any support that serves to them to climb upper.

Es sorprendente cómo se enroscan en cualquier soporte que les sirva para trepar más alto.

ENGLISH

In botany, a tendril is a specialized stem, leaf or petiole with a threadlike shape that is used by climbing plants for support and attachment, generally by twining around whatever it touches.

The earliest and most comprehensive study of tendrils was Charles Darwin's monograph On the Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants, which was originally published in 1865. This work also coined the term circumnutation to describe the motion of growing stems and tendrils seeking supports.

Second Life holiday parties was an incredible mix of trance, dnb, electronica, dark psy, goa, minimal, proggy, acid, experimental, industrial, noize, tribal, jazz, live music, country, blues, reggae, salsa, classical, opera, and Christmas music. I heard it all and then some.

I love music of all kinds. If it's good, it's worth listening to, so don't start with the nose-up-in-the-air over your favorite genre. Believe me... good music will always find an audience. An audience of sophisticated listeners will stop to listen to any good sound... even if it isn't part of your normal repertoire.

What is amazing is that dj's and musicians around the world know this, and they borrow from all genres to create their own personal sounds.

Here in Second Life, we get the results from around the world. World music mixes with the trendy sounds of the day, and we get the sounds that we love so much.

I want to thank all the dj's, musicians, club owners and event makers in SL. You guys made a holiday scene like no other. APPLAUSE & BRAVO ::::

If you have ever hear or read that term "the photographic magic hour" and "the golden light" and always wondered what it really meant, then this photo illustrates it very well.

One hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset, is the time of the day where the near horizontal rays of the sun must cross the longest distance across our atmosphere and as a result the colors light up with a strong orange cast depending on the atmospheric conditions. Usually some clouds and dust will reinforce this natural phenomenon.

For photographers it is a pure gift from mother nature: it is like having a giant candlelight that produces the same warm colors as interior lights on day film. This lighting condition produces an incredible mood to the scene. Some photographers say that lighting and the quality of light is what turns a good photo into a great one.

Here this lighting was perfect to describe the mood of this festive family having a great time picnicking at the lake. The temperature was perfect and the golden light of the sunset was adding some warmth to their happy expressions.

a great band, and if you don't know them, go have a look and a listen sometime. here's a link to their website, and one of many tracks available on youtube, hold on (from their self-titled album, available through their site or alternative tentacles).

in ottawa? they're playing at babylon tuesday, 21 july. go see them, buy some cds and don't worry, they'll be there (last time they were due to play ottawa, they got stopped at the border by some dick in a uniform - we drove from toronto to see them and only found out about the cancellation at the club). last show they did in toronto was 2003 or 2004 at the horseshoe, so we were glad to get to see them again.

apologies to the band for not getting shots of everyone.

Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip

this Week has been one of dwelling on the past alot. so many things have

sprung up in my memory and distracted me from the present.

many good memories with wonderful people, but somehow this has

brought me to feeling weighed down by the passing of time.

How often in our lives, when good times surround us, do we really

It always seems to be looking back on special memories that makes us ache

Some time in the last couple weeks i have found myself concerned

Actually the first work day after the 9th anniversary of us hiring Caney to work as our dog back in 1999, after interviewing him at North Shore Animal Shelter.

Although it may look like a relaxing day at the office with his head in the clouds, he actually completely shredded his paw pads on this trip. His hind paws were bloody by the end of the ascent/descent to exit out.

This is in part to two things, the humidity keeping his paws and the rocks wet, the slickness from the humidity on the rocks, the course NH granite, the trip up the King Ravine (which the RMC guide says "This trail is NOT recommended for dogs"), and just the general steepness off all three days hiking.

Ironically, I just recently STOPPED carrying the paw repair kit. Definitely back in the bag for now on.

As cute as he is this is one tough dog, it was 60F and 100% humidity when we got up at 5am at 4200ft. The hike out in the same humidity felt like we were walking through a sauna, and it only got warmer. While it's pretty oppressive for a human, I know it was worse on him. He was panting non stop from camp to the car which was over 5 miles and 3.5 hours of hiking.

Typically, the daytime highs at 4000-6000ft in the northeastern US are only in the low 60s with much lower humidity than down in the valleys.

It was so hot my gear was soaked before we left camp, and his fur was soaked, and it never actually rained. Suffice to say, this little break in the 30mph winds (when they did please us with a gust) was well earned.

Margam Park is a remarkably diverse and varied landscape within which there is evidence of over 4,000 years of continuous habitation and use by man and as such represents a rare and valuable learning resource and a heritage attraction of considerable distinction. It is of exceptional historic and scenic value and has some of the country’s finest architectural treasures in its magnificent setting

The 850 acre country estate situated two miles east of Port Talbot on the narrow coastal plain, set on the southern slopes of Mynydd Margam, a largely forested mountain rising to a height of 349m AOD, is one of the major ancient settlements of Glamorgan. It’s history can be traced back to pre-historic times, Bronze and Iron Age relics abound the area, and evidence exists of Roman and extensive Celtic occupation, the deer herd probably introduced by the Romans.

It has been a place of particular religious importance throughout it’s history. The Norman Abbey, founded in the mid 12th Century was, until its dissolution at the hands of Henry VIII, a religious centre of major importance in South Wales. The remains of the Abbey are extensive, the ruined Chapter House being of exceptional architectural quality.

Following the Dissolution, successive owners built and rebuilt their houses on the Abbey site. The surviving buildings form a unique record of its historical and architectural development. In the late 18th century considerable redevelopment took place, the area was laid out on classical lines as parkland and the famous Orangery built which remains one of the largest and most outstanding buildings of its kind in the country.

In the early 19th century the park was further enhanced and extended and the present Margam Castle was built. This Tudor ‘style’ Mansion remained in use until the end of the second world war, and the ensuing quarter of a century of neglect took its toll and the building was in a badly deteriorated condition when acquired by the present owners.

The Park was officially opened to the public in 1977 since which some four million people have visited to enjoy the countryside, gardens and heritage; for environmental education and to use the facilities socially.

Well, here is another in my [occasional series on containers](http://www.jezblog.com/index.php?showimage=1316) ........ Containers....... [For shipping and world trade](http://www.jezblog.com/index.php?showimage=1231&PHPSESSID=253e73527f577b8f5f3d5c19047cb3a1&reply_to=47309&PHPSESSID=253e73527f577b8f5f3d5c19047cb3a1)......... but right now Im really thinking of the containers.......... Yeah the actual containers themselves...... and what's in them...... if any of it could keep or would be worth keeping for a very long time........

Today I went to the [British Museum to see an amazing exhibition of 'The Book of the Dead'](http://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/all_current_exhibitions/book_of_the_dead.aspx) . Really it is looking at the religion of Ancient Egypt. The beliefs and spells to guide the dead of their time into the life everlasting........ Into the 'Field of Reeds'.

"The Field of Reeds. The God who is in it is Ra.

The very high mountain.

The Mound of transfigured spirits.

The Mound of Wenet. The god who is in it is the Destroyers of Souls.

The river of flaming fire.

The Mound of Kheraha. The god who is in it is Hapi."

(spell 150 names of the mounds of the Netherworld)

The book of the dead took the form of hundreds of spells written to protect and guide the spirit through the tests that they must pass to make it into eternal life and the prospect of riding with the Sun God Ra on his boat each day as he rode across the skies.

It's amazing that 3000 year old bits of papyrus survive to this day and are on display to pass on all that was sacred to the ancient Egyptians. Hey that in itself is a pretty amazing testament to the way they preserved their dead and the containers they buried them in ...... as each individuals book of the dead was buried with its deceased owner........ Often they almost clutched it ........ Mummified in it in their sarcophagus.

I don't know if any of our religious texts will stand a reading in 3000 years time......... or need to be stuck on to embalmed corpses......... and I wonder what of our civilization of now will still survive to be marveled at in a distant future.

I don't know what could, should or would survive. But Im not sure any of the stuff in these containers is it................

I'm not sure where you would put anything you wanted to keep....... something you wanted to be presented to the world in 3000 years from now........ maybe on the internet..........??????

Although Harv must be working on a pretty amazing series of catacombs under his house........ As today he tells me he unearthed an unopened box of........ :

"This is a FULL BOX of SEALED Agfa Record Rapid (50 sheets), a paper considered to be one of the best ever made.

Agfa stopped production of this paper in the 90's, it has acquired cult status as being 'state of the art' exhibition paper.

The box is factory sealed, unopened, undamaged and was safely stored in cool dark conditions. (see pictures)

This is a very rare opportunity, I doubt you'll see an unopened box again as they are simply not available anywhere.

Much of my portfolio is printed on this paper, if I still had a darkroom I'd keep it but I switched to digital years ago."

The like of such a valuable and rare find ........ can only be dug from ancient protected places........ Protected from the desert sun and away from grave robbers and sand vipers............ Yes it can only be found in ancient hidden rare places.......... er.......... or otherwise you can bid for it on ebay ........ hehehehehehehe.......... :

Paprika is a spice made from ground, dried fruits of Capsicum annuum, either bell pepper or chili pepper varieties or mixtures thereof. The seasoning is used in many cuisines to add color and flavor to dishes, but it is usually associated with Hungary. It is also used in Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Morocco,[1] and also Spain and Portugal, the latter countries having introduced capsicum annuum to the Old World from the Americas. The use of this plant rapidly expanded from Iberia throughout Africa and Asia,[2] and ultimately reached Central Europe through the Balkans, which were under Ottoman rule, explaining the Slavic origin of the modern English term. In Spanish, Paprika has been known as Pimenton since the 1500s, when it became a typical ingredient of the western region of Extremadura.[3] Despite its presence in Central Europe since the beginning of Ottoman conquests, it did not become popular in Hungary much more than one hundred years ago.[4]

Central European paprika was hot until the 1920s, when a Szeged breeder found one plant that produced sweet fruit. This was grafted onto other plants.[5] Nowadays, paprika can range from mild to hot, and flavors also vary from country to country, but almost all the plants grown produce the sweet variety.[5] The sweet paprika is mostly pericarp with more than half of the seeds removed, whereas hot paprika contains some seeds, placentas, calyxes, and stalks.

Phoenicopterus roseus

To Janie Cooper-Wilson, the Oro African Methodist Episcopal Church is a gold mine of history, culture and community, and recognition of its restoration by the province is incentive to use it as a beacon of hope.

“These awards aren’t given lightly,” said the historian, referring to the two Lieutenant-Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards received by the Township of Oro-Medonte. “The church has the capability of bringing so many together.”

Last week, Mayor Harry Hughes, on behalf of the township, accepted the Excellence in Conservation Award and the Community Leadership Award for the Oro-African Church preservation project presented by the Ontario Heritage Trust and Elizabeth Dowdeswell, lieutenant-governor of Ontario.

“You never realize how important something is when you’re involved in it, but then you receive an award from the lieutenant-governor general for it, and you feel it’s significant,” said Hughes. “It’s a validation, really.

“It also indicates the values we’re pulling from: inclusiveness, celebrating diversity and working together for the betterment of all,” he added.

The awards were shared with some members of the community who had been involved with the project. As well, those attending the ceremony at council chambers on Wednesday evening viewed a 30-minute video titled, Revival, The Oro-African Church, made by Dave Sullivan, regional producer for Bell Media, documenting the restoration process.

“It’s nice to see it being renovated and coming to the final stage that it’s finished now,” said Twyla Banbury-Campbell, president-secretary Mitchell Square Women’s Institute in Oro-Medonte. “It was very interesting to see that they lifted the building and all the different steps. The gentlemen that did it, did an excellent job.”

Not only was the restoration well done, it also brought together people from varying backgrounds, said Harry Laur, of Barrie, whose wife had been involved in the steering committee of the project.

Cooper-Wilson said the church “connects to all the black sites in Ontario and it shows the collective history as well,” she said. “For so many years, it was pigeonholed as just black soldiers in the war of 1812, but they all had families.”

What worries Cooper-Wilson is that history may repeat itself.

“What’s going on right now with the immigrants trying to escape by crossing the border into Canada, our people did this back when,” she said. “This is just a repeat of the fugitives way back in 1850.”

Although she’s pleased with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approach with open borders, Cooper-Wilson said she’s “absolutely appalled” at what’s happening in the United States of America. “I believe in the concept of what (President Donald Trump) wants to do, but he’s approaching it the wrong way,” she said.

But where the situation may look bleak, there’s hope for Canada to take the role of a leader in welcoming refugees, added Cooper-Wilson.

“United States was sitting there with a feather in the cap as the country that the world looked to, (but) I think it’s going to be Canada now,” she said. “And that church is the way to help the young ones to learn. It’s very important.”

The church on Line 3 North is being opened to the public as a satellite location for the Simcoe County Museum, with tours starting this spring, but that’s not where it should end, said Cooper-Wilson.

“I think the municipality is still on a learning curve,” she said. “My job was done when the church was built – I can step back and someone else can take the next roll – but we all have to do our part. It isn’t about one individual. It’s about all of us, where we don’t see colour or economic status; we see a family – Canada’s family.”

Revival, The Oro-African Church, is now available for public viewing via the township’s website at oro-medonte.ca.

Cacatua galerita triton, identified thanks to Graygeek2008.

ENGLISH

The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Cacatua galerita, is one of the larger and more widespread of Australia's cockatoos. Frequently sought as a cage bird in and out of Australia, they can be so numerous that in crop-growing areas of Australia they are shot or poisoned as pests. Government permit is required though, as they are a protected species under the Australian Commonwealth Law.

They can be destructive to cereal and fruit crops, as well as timber structures such as house planking, garden furniture and trees.

The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is similar in appearance to the three species of corella found in Australia. Corellas are smaller, however, and lack the prominent yellow crest. There are a few regional subspecies within Australia.

Typically these birds will weigh around 800 grams. In most cases, male birds can be distinguished from Females with their almost black eyes, whereas the female has a more red/brown coloured eye. Their distinctive raucous call can be very loud; it is meant to travel through the forest environments in which they live, including tropical and subtropical rainforests. These birds are naturally curious creatures, as well as very intelligent. They have adapted very well to European settlement in Australia and live in many urban areas.

Sulphur-crested cockatoos may no longer be imported into the United States as a result of the Wild Bird Conservation Act. However, they have been bred in captivity. The potential owner should be aware of the bird's needs, as well as how loud these birds can be and their natural desire to chew wood and other hard and organic materials.

Aster (syn. Diplopappus Cass.) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. The genus once contained nearly 600 species in Eurasia and North America, but after morphologic and molecular research on the genus during the 1990s, it was decided that the North American species are better treated in a series of other related genera. After this split there are roughly 180 species within the genus, all but one being confined to Eurasia. The name Aster comes from the Ancient Greek word ἀστήρ (astér), meaning "star", referring to the shape of the flower head. Many species and a variety of hybrids and varieties are popular as garden plants because of their attractive and colourful flowers. Aster species are used as food plants by the larvae of a number of Lepidoptera species. Asters can grow in all hardiness zones.

The genus Aster is now generally restricted to the Old World species, with Aster amellus being the type species of the genus, as well as of the family Asteraceae. The New World species have now been reclassified in the genera Almutaster, Canadanthus, Doellingeria, Eucephalus, Eurybia, Ionactis, Oligoneuron, Oreostemma, Sericocarpus and Symphyotrichum, though all are treated within the tribe Astereae. Regardless of the taxonomic change, all are still widely referred to as "asters" in the horticultural trades.

In the UK there are only two native members of the genus: Goldilocks, which is very rare, and Aster tripolium, the Sea aster. Aster alpinus spp. vierhapperi is the only species native to North America.

Missouri Mines State Historic Site View On Black

Nestled deep within the eastern Ozarks is an area known as the Old Lead Belt; it is a major part of the great Southeast Missouri lead district, the premier lead mining district of the world. The mining industry in this area has played an important role in Missouri's economic and social fabric for more than 280 years. Missouri Mines Sate Historic Site preserves the historically significant structures and artifacts of the largest mine-mill complex in the Old Lead Belt, and interprets the historic role of mineral resources and the mining industry in Missouri.

Pierre Charles LeSeur led the first European mineralogical expedition into the Mississippi Valley in the early 1700's. Two decades later, word came of a "shiny gray mineral...that was everywhere, often lying on the surface of the ground." These early explorers discovered that blanket-like lodes of galena, many feet thick, lay just below the earth's surface. This plentiful mineral is the primary lead ore still mined today in Missouri. The ore deposits have made Missouri the nation's major source of lead for more than 100 years.

The demand for lead resulted in economic development, which brought major corporate enterprises, deep multileveled underground mines, sophisticated underground railroads, and the influx of thousands of workers to the Old Lead Belt. More than 1,000 miles of abandoned multilevel mine tunnels that underlie the region and 300 miles of underground mainline railroad tracks that connected various shafts and mills are testimony to the 108 years of persistent mining operations in this area. Today, these mines, flooded naturally with ground water, provide a water supply for Park Hills and surrounding communities.

In 1864, St. Joseph Lead Company purchased nearly 950 acres at Bonne Terre, Missouri. The company soon rose to dominance over it's competitors because of it's innovations in ore-smelting, underground engineering technology and the development and use of mechanical equipment. In 1923, the company purchased the Federal Mill No. 3 lead-concentrating complex and improved the mill to become the largest lead mill in the world. It remained in operation until 1972.

In late 1975, the company donated the Federal mine-mill complex, along with adjoining lands, to Missouri for use as a state park. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources took possession of the 8,244 acre tract in 1976, subsequently naming it St. Joe State Park. In 1980, the 25 acre mine-mill was designated as Missouri Mines State Historic Site.

At it's peak, the complex consisted of 25 buildings, including the powerhouse, head-frame and primary crusher, mill, flotation plant, filter and dryer building, machine shop, carpenter shop, sawmill and electrical shop. Currently, the 19,000 square-foot powerhouse is under development as a Missouri mining history and mineral resources museum.

The first of the three museum galleries in the powerhouse contains underground mining equipment, such as the St. Joe Shovel, a man-carrying "speeder" and "electric mule" locomotives that replaced men and mules for moving cars of ore.

The second gallery includes exhibits on lead, geology and mineral resources, and features an outstanding systematic mineral collection, as well as an array of fluorescent minerals. A small theater is used to show a 12-minute video depicting underground mining and the ore milling process in the Old Lead Belt as an introduction for visitors. This gallery also features a Museum Shop, where related books, minerals, mineral jewelry, rock hound equipment and souvenirs may be purchased.

The third gallery contains giant air compressors that supplied air power underground to run the pneumatic drills and other equipment. This gallery eventually will contain exhibits on mining history and technology.

About the Pudú

The pudús (Pudu), considered to be the world's smallest deer, are native to South America. There are two species of pudú: the Northern pudú (Pudu mephistophiles) from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile[1], which stands about 12 to 14 inches (32 to 35 cm) at the shoulder; and the Southern or Chilean Pudú (Pudu puda) from southern Chile and southwestern Argentina[1], which averages between 14 to 16 inches (36 to 41 cm)[2]. Males sprout small (7-10cm) antlers which are shed annually.

Both species of pudú subsist on a diet of grass, leaves, and fallen fruit. In the wild, their life expectancy is between eight and ten years. The Southern species is endangered (IUCN status: vulnerable), primarily due to hunting and habitat loss from human agriculture and land development.

The pudú has several interesting characteristics that distinguish it from other deer. It is able to climb fallen trees, and it is sometimes forced to do so, both to escape predators and reach food. Because of its small size, it is often forced to balance on its hind legs to reach foliage. When threatened, it barks in alarm.

Because it lives in the dense forests of South America, it requires an efficient way to travel throughout the undergrowth. Pudú maintain a complex system of paths and trails that allow them to quickly get from one place to another. Such paths often lead to excellent places to rest, mate or find food.

Pudú mate between April and June, and gestation periods range from 200 to 220 days, giving birth to one or occasionally two young.

Its predators are typically eagles, owls, cougars, foxes, and small cats.

Correfocs (Catalan pronunciation: [ˌkorəˈfɔks], Western Catalan: [ˌkoreˈfɔks]); literally in English "fire-runs") are among the most striking features present in Catalan festivals. In the correfoc, a group of individuals will dress as devils and light fireworks. While dancing to the drums of a traditional gralla, they will set off their fireworks among crowds of spectators.

Correfoc in Valencia

The correfoc can come in many forms. Some are simple parades using fireworks and effigies of the devil. In Sitges, it is common for a crowd to line a street, while participants run through a tunnel of fireworks. In Barcelona and Tarragona, the correfoc is run during the Festival of La Mercè, in September.

Another typical Catalan folkloric expression of this sort takes place in L'Arboç. The highlight of the village's feast is the Carretillada. In the evening of the feast day, the town square is made to look like Hell. For nearly half an hour, "devils" burn their carretilles (carts), jumping around ceaselessly, while a large "sceptre of Lucifer" and the "pitchfork of the Diablessa (she-devil)" shoot fire-jets and other pyrotechnics. Every year, the carretillada is a bit different, because the 'colla' (group) does not give up novelties that are added each year to add to the spectacle.
