This weekend, there was a house in our city, (about five minutes walking distance), that was having an open house yard sell.

Their house was built in 1904. (My house was built in 1890.) I'm in LOVE with old, antique, vintage stuff. From houses, to clothing, to CAMERAS, to LIFESTYLES.

These people knew exactly how to live in that completely vintage, old-fashioned way. Their home wasn't ever air conditioned. And they've been living there since 1988. Well, little did I know, but the man living there is a WIDELY known photographer.

www.garygruby.com/ <--His website!

He does AMAZING things with his many cameras. He is selling SEVERAL vintage cameras, including some SUPER awesome collapsible Polaroid cameras. He was a very inspiring and very talented older man, and just speaking to him was such a pleasure. :]

I hope all of you get to have experiences like I had.

Math test Thursday. So I'll be studying hardcore. :[ Pray for me! I'm so nervous :[

ANYWAYS, on to five random things you may or may not know about me. (I've been tagged so many times for so many things, I can't even count. I tag everyone by the way ;])

1. My dreams are almost ALWAYS realistic. It's quite aggravating actually. I'd rather have trippy, yet awesome dreams, rather than waking up wondering if I ACTUALLY met Justin Bieber. :|

2. I'm a good friend. I'm not saying because I'm proud. I'm saying it because I strive to be by my friend's sides. I want them to be happy, to make good decisions, to remember who they are, to go for their goals, to love, to have fun, to explore, and to really be able to trust me as a friend. I'll hold in a secret until the day I die, and I love helping people with their problems, or just being there for them to talk to. I know I can't always hang out with people, but I'm always here if you need to talk. This means all you Flickrists as well!

3. I love SO many different types of music. Back in highschool, I was STRICTLY into heavier music. (Metal, hardcore, screamo, etc.) But lately, I've been digging mostly everything. I love reggae, mainstream, pop-punk, rap, hip hop, indie, techno, rock, classic rock, hardcore, metal. Everything except country mainly. :P

4. My favorite bands/singers lately are!: Katy Perry, The Noisettes, MGMT, B.O.B., Nicki Minaj, Avenged Sevenfold, and Lady Gaga. There are many more I just can't remember. :[

5. I've been drinking ONLY water, (and the occasional coffee) for the past two weeks! And I must say, I've had less acne, and more energy!

Hope you enjoyed, and learned a thing or two about me! Interact with me in the comments! :] What're some bands I should check out?

First the watches in the light, then a shot with simulated subdued light - actually shot in complete darkness, but a strongly reduced fill flash was fired.

The ugly orange, green and white reflections are from LED's on my computer, scanner, printer etc. - these have been blocked off by black cloth for the following shots.

The shot at 22:12 was the first of the decay series, this is how it looks immediately after "lights off". Notice that the initial luminosity of the SuperLuminova on both Fortis is much brighter than the tritium tubes on the Ball.

For the following shots the watches have been covered up, and the entire setup stayed in complete darkness between the shots. The decay of luminosity for SL makes the advantage of tritium tubes clear in the second shot.

Check the time as indicated on the Ball watch for elapsed time between the shots

One word about the exposure: All shot at ISO 200, 15sec f/5.6. Opening up to f/5.6 means that overall DoF is shallow, but closing down to f/8 or f/11 will cause the luminous dots on the seconds hands on both the B-42 Marinemaster and the Ball become (for the camera only) invisible. Going for a 30sec exposure time would have caused "burn out" on the Marinemaster and the Flieger, because they are initially too bright. Overall it's a compromise.

The final shot shows how it remains "all night long". As mentioned elsewhere, a camera sees different than a human eye, so one final personal remark. Constant exposure lume shot series like this do favor tritium tubes.

Though it may not anymore be visible in the pictures because a constant exposure was used for all shots, the Fortis B-42 Marinemaster remains comfortable readable throughout the night (with full dark adapted eyes). On the new B-42 Flieger only the hands can be seen through the night.

The temple of Santa Maria la Major is situated in the highest part of the town, at the same place where the ancient Romanesque church was. Because of the increase in population it was decided to build a new one. The work was made in sections and due to the Black Death, which provoked a great economical and demographic crisis, it had to be left unfinished. The big Gothic façade was destroyed during the ‘Segadors’ war the one we can see now is in a Baroque style (17th century).

The interior is of big dimensions, a long nave with fan vaulting and with scenes of the Old Testament sculptured. At the sides there are the chapels which have a square base with fan vaulting, there are beautiful Gothic windows, where the mysteries of the Rosary are represented. In the 18th century a chapel was extended and it was turned into the Holiest Chapel. We point out the big Gothic image of the Virgin ‘Mare de Déu del Cor’, carved in polychromatic wood, the altarpiece of ‘Sant Bernat I Sant Bernabé’ and the Baroque organ, one of the most important in Catalonia.

CASTELLANO

Some more from the TWRP show on the weekend. These ones had to be butchered a little more to look good. Despite the lower quality they are still funkilicious.

I was fortunate enough to catch my my favorite intergalactic fellows during their recent stay on earth. Words really can't describe the funkasaurus rex that is Tupperware Remix Party.

Here's how they put it:

Tupperware Remix Party is an extra-dimensional quartet that has crash-landed in Halifax. Resolute in their quest to rid the universe of evil, they are ever-grooving. With their towering sonic wall of electronica-infused rock, they are humankind's only hope of salvation from boredom.

They have locked themselves inside of the Groovestation and will not be returning until they have produced a tasty recorded treat for the world to dance to.

Registration Number: EU taxes paid

Chassis Number: 11801236

The S boasted modifications typical of a higher-performance Porsche: these included a re-profiled cam, larger valves, better porting, loftier compression (9.8:1 vs. 9.0) and larger jets for the Weber carburettors (which were otherwise much like those given to the base 911 from early '66).

The result was 30 more horsepower, totalling 180 horsepower, furthermore the torque improved fractionally to 127 pound-feet, peaking fully at 1,000 rpm higher.

Unlike other models, the S lacked a choke, but pumping the accelerator was usually enough for starting. On the other hand, merely blipping the throttle on the freer-breathing S would send the tacho needle zinging to its 7,300 rpm redline. Porsche thus wisely fitted an ignition cut-out that interrupted spark to the plugs when it neared maximum revs, thus protecting the valve-train from overly enthusiastic drivers.

Naturally, the S also received chassis upgrades to match its extra power. These included a rear anti-roll bar (augmenting the one in front), Koni shocks, ventilated instead of solid-rotor disc brakes all-round and, soon to be a 911 hallmark, pretty five-spoke Fuchs alloy wheels that cut five pounds from the unsprung weight at each hub.

S gear ratios were evenly spaced except for the five-speed transmission's overdrive top, which was purposely very “high”. It gave 100 mph at 4,200 rpm, hardly a strain for the free-revving flat-six. Pulling a max rpm in the lower gears allowed the model to net 0-60 in eight seconds or less, running a standing quarter-mile of under 16 seconds at 90-plus mph.

Built in 1968 this fine example is finished in white with a contrasting black interior, and we're informed that it is in excellent condition throughout having undergone a full restoration. The interior is described as being “flawless”, boasting a period Grundig radio.

The car resided in Italy for many years and is now presented with a UK MoT certificate which is valid until July 2015, and is accompanied with European title documents. A fine example of a highly desirable motor car, and with values ever increasing, now is the time to buy one of Zuffenhausen's finest.

Worms, anyone? I've got plenty to go 'round.

So much for a break from silly self portraits, haha. From my last 52 week entry:

I figure I could use a break from the more fun and silly self's for this 52 week'r.

Growing up I used to love those gummy candies that are available at Walgreens and other corner convenience stores. My favorites were the gummy candies that were lathered and coated in sugar. More particularly the peach rings, and the sugar battered creepy crawlies.

It's been a while since I've indulged in the gummy goodness. Until today at least. I went to Safeway and swooped up a bag of non-sugar coated worms. They were great tasting ... at first. on nom nom nom

While taking this series of self portraits I repeatedly found myself chewing and eating the gummy worms. I downed so many that they tasted absolutely horrendous by the time I got the shot I wanted.

For the record, that is indeed a real jumbo sized creepy crawly slimey squirming live wriggling pulsing night crawling earthworm in my left hand!

Who said worms aren't cute? Earthworms are cool. And tapeworms are cute.

In any case, with Happy Hallow right around the corner -stay safe, and have fun out there everyone!

Il decano dei miliziani, Tore Viola

Grande - Manna - Large...........................tag Sant'Efisio

Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) J.Buchholz, 1939 (Basionym Wellingtonia gigantea John Lindley, 1853)

Riesen- oder Bergmammutbaum, Giant Sequoia, Giant Redwood, Sierra Redwood, or Wellingtonia

Derartigen Gerüchten haftet oft etwas Wahres an. So berichtet z. B. Joly 1883, dass John Barrington in einem persönlichen Gespräch erwähnte, dass er 1844 ein Packet Samen an seinen Vater nach in Irland geschickt hätte. Also ist es durchaus nicht auszuschließen, dass in Europäischen Parkanlagen die ersten Riesen-Mammutbäume bereits vor 1850 gepflanzt wurden. (Richard J. Hartesveldt et. all 1975 “The Giant sequoias of the Sierra Nevada” / JOLY, C. 1883. “The Wellingtonia in their natural state”)

Known as the "Theatre Duke" Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen (1826 - 1914) took over in 1866, the government of the duchy. But only after the death of his father, Bernhard II in 1882 he began the transformation of the Altenstein (Old Stone) according to his ideas. He entrusted the upper head gardener Viehweg Franz, son of Saxony-Weimar garden inspector and garden writer Hermann Jäger with the execution of its restructuring plans: "A huge, beautiful grown Sequoia gigantea was from the ducal plants from the one hours distant Bad Liebenstein transported by a great English planting vehicle to here and developed magnificent. Who there knows what infinite care on the part of senior professional was necessary to transplant an exotic conifer of this kind or this age, will appreciate such a horticultural feat "(Max Pohlig „Der Altensteiner Schlosspark in Sachsen-Meiningen – Ein landschaftliches Stimmungsgemälde aus den Thüringer Bergen / The Altensteiner Castle Park in Saxony-Meiningen -. A scenic mood paintings from the Thuringian mountains" Gartenwelt, Vol 13, Issue 22)

The exact year of planting is not designated, but the successful planting action of an 30 year old sequoia tree needed to be at least 1-2 years of preparation, so that the transplanting to Altenstein should probably be done 1884/85. The existing information on the planting year to 1850/1865 so far are to be regarded as inaccurate! Anyway, for today there growing sequoia. However, it is possible that prior to this specimen earlier sequoia trees had been planted on old Stein already. In the reverberation of the Little Ice Age there had been some long-lasting and severe winters and the only time in Liebenstein planted specimen could have this sole survivor. We do not know. The initial origin of the Altenstein redwood is yet unclear.

To the the Altenstein Sequoia is maintains the rumor that the English Queen Adelaide (Königin Adelheid), sister of the Duke Bernhard II, have brought this as a gift (seedling) from England. Such rumors often adheres to some truth. Adelaide was the last time in 1848 in her native country, a year before her death in 1849.

The " discovery" of the giant redwoods by AT Dowd 1852 certainly was not the first encounter of a European in this species in 1839 was in a book - which remained largely unnoticed at first - the first time of ' incredible ' trees the speech which a participants had discovered expedition under the direction of Joseph R. Walker through the Sierra Nevada in 1833. Really they took note of the trees but only on the basis of the 1852 newspaper article published about AT Dowd 's discovery . Also be expected to be signed before 1853 by William Lobb and John D. Matthew , the introduction into the European garden culture . So reports eg Joly 1883 that John Barrington mentioned in an interview that he had in 1844 sent a packet of seeds to his father in Ireland. So it is quite possible that the first giant sequoia trees were planted before 1850 in European parks. ( Richard J. Hartesveldt et . All 1975 "The Giant sequoias of the Sierra Nevada " / Joly , C. 1883. "The Wellingtonia In Their natural state" )

Morphological differences this specimen to another in Germany / Europe cultivated Sequoiadendron might suggest the origin from another Giant Sequoia Grove.

An odd sign we saw in some Tube station. I have absolutely no idea what it actually refers to, but considering that I am a PHP developer by trade, this was quite funny to me.

UPDATE ON BABY PIGEONS ON THE PATIO:

For those of you who have been following this story of the baby pigeions growing up in a hanging basket on our patio, you know that the larger one (whom I called Henry), had gone missing. I thought for sure he had been taken by a cat. :-(

But, when I got up the next morning I looked outside to check on Henrietta (the remaining baby pigeon), and lo and behold, there was Henry on the straw mat on the ground in front of the dining room doors! I went outside and carefully took him in my hands (he was so warm!) and placed him back in the nest with Henrietta. He seemed really happy to be back there.

Well, Henry (or perhaps it was Henrietta?) fell out of the basket again yesterday, and it is not surprising because they are getting pretty big now. My sister put her back in the basket and they both seem to be doing well, growing like crazy. Here they are at 3 weeks old. Now they are about the same size and I can't tell who is Henry or Henrietta!

INFORMATION ON THE PIGEON:

The Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), or Rock Dove, is a member of the bird family Columbidae (doves and pigeons). In common usage, this bird is often simply referred to as the "pigeon". The species includes the domestic pigeon, and escaped domestic pigeons have given rise to the feral pigeon.

Wild Rock Pigeons are pale grey with two black bars on each wing, although domestic and feral pigeons are very variable in colour and pattern. There are few visible differences between males and females. The species is generally monogamous, with two squabs (young) per brood. Both parents care for the young for a time.

Habitats include various open and semi-open environments, including agricultural and urban areas. Cliffs and rock ledges are used for roosting and breeding in the wild. Originally found wild in Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, feral Rock Pigeons have become established in cities around the world. The species is abundant, with an estimated population of 17 to 28 million feral and wild birds in Europe.

The Rock Pigeon breeds at any time of the year, but peak times are spring and summer. Nesting sites are situated along coastal cliff faces, as well as the artificial cliff faces created by apartment buildings with accessible ledges or roof spaces.

The type of nest constructed is a flimsy platform of straw and sticks, put on ledge, under cover. Often window ledges of buildings. Two white eggs are laid with incubation that is shared by both parents lasting from seventeen to nineteen days.

The nestling has pale yellow down and a flesh-coloured bill with a dark band. It is tended and fed on "crop milk" like other doves. The fledging period is 30 days.

Poroiba - Akau - Wigschool - Pruikenschool

The wigmen of the Huli people aren't like Western toupee manufacturers. They are wizards who only work with people who have fine heads of hair.

What a traditional wigman does is use ancient magic to make hair grow faster than normal so it can be cut off and turned into a wig. Evidently, magic - like hair restorer - doesn't work if the hair is long gone.

This singular way of making hairpieces is found in the Tari Valley, 2000m up in the Highlands of PNG, an area just starting to make the transition from the old ways of centuries past to the new ideas which have begun to flow from the outside world.

When I explored the villages and roadside markets around the lodge, most of the men I met were wearing caps, but a good number still went about their daily business dressed in the traditional wigs.

In fact many had not one but two wigs - a plain day wig shaped like an upturned bowl, and an ornate ceremonial wig decorated with bird feathers - possession of which, like ownership of many pigs or having more than one wife, is a sign of wealth and status.

As a result the wigmen are still much in demand. And, this being a place where magic is taken very seriously, they are deeply respected. The sign welcoming visitors to Tari Airport highlights the fact that the area is "Home to the Huli wigman."

The Huli are an indigenous people that live in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. They number over 65,000 and have been living in the area for at least 600 years. They speak Huli, Tok Pisin, and English.

About:

My first shot at star trails, actually I didn't planned this, it just happened :) When I stayed at Lake Tekapo I wanted to photograph the milky way, because Lake Tekapo is known for excellent conditions for this (little stray light). But the with full moon it's impossible to capture the milky way properly, as I was awake I thought why not try a star trails picture. And this is the result.

Location:

Church of the Good Shepherd, Lake Tekapo, NZ

This image is also geotagged

Technical stuff:

94 pictures at 30 sec / f6.3 shot back-to-back

1 black frame

First frame was shot separately (the small dot at the start of some lines), I used a flashlight to put some light into the windows of the church, the church is purely moonlight exposed.

In Lightroom I added some extra exposure and Fill light to all pictures, this way I got a little more blue in the sky and the end result is a looks better.

Afterwards put it through StarTrails and did a high-pass sharpening on the foreground.

Improvements:

Do a pause between frames.

I keep trying to get this better... constructive feedback more than welcome! I played in lightroom a bit with split toning trying to get better greens without turning the water green too...

I want to thank Gary Randall for all his encouragement and help, he is a master in the Mt. Hood forest and very inspiring!

These words from an old much faved version of this shot (Waters of Life, seen below) still apply today;

"For all of my life this little waterfall was a stopping place on camping trips along the Forest Road 23 above Trout Lake, Washington... Big Spring Creek, a sweet little place, surrounded by huckleberries and wildflowers... and I would always pour the icy snowmelt and spring water over my head and take a big drink of pure delicious water...

I have slept in my truck beside this falls listening to the music of the earth in all its glory weaving its songs throughout my dreams...

Running up the steep path alongside the fast flowing stream, through the tall trees, is a stimulant of life force like no other... panting for breath in the high altitude while my out of shape heart pounds... but oh so full of LIFE and joy!

THis day the fog was so magical... I had never seen it quite like this before! so mysterious... wonderful!! "

George Rieveschl

In January 1916, George Rieveschl was born in Arlington Heights, Ohio. The son of a paper mill worker, Rieveschl graduated from the Ohio Mechanics Institute of Technology in 1933, and he sought employment as a commercial artist. Unfortunately for Rieveschl, the Great Depression currently gripped the United States, and he could not find work in his chosen profession. He assisted his family by working at their restaurant, but Rieveschl eventually decided to enroll in the University of Cincinnati, where he majored in chemistry. Upon graduating in 1937, Rieveschl entered graduate school at the University of Cincinnati. He earned his doctorate degree in 1940, and he proceeded to accept a teaching position at the University of Cincinnati.

Within two years of joining the faculty at the University of Cincinnati, Rieveschl had become an assistant professor. He embarked upon numerous research experiments, but his primary focus was on relieving muscle spasms.

His research resulted in the discovery of Benadryl, an antihistamine used for allergy sufferers. Benadryl reduces the amount of Histamine in the human body, a chemical that causes allergy symptoms. Approved in 1946, Benadryl, at first, was available only through prescription.

In 1943, Rieveschl left the University of Cincinnati for a position with Parke, Davis & Company in Detroit, Michigan. He rose through the company's ranks, becoming vice president of commercial development in 1961. In 1965, Rieveschl left Parke-Davis. He spent the next several years as a private consultant for various pharmaceutical firms.

He returned to the University of Cincinnati in 1970, accepting a position as vice president of research. While at the University of Cincinnati, Rieveschl also served as acting vice president of the university's medical center. He retired from the University of Cincinnati in 1982. Over the course of his career, Rieveschl received numerous honors and awards, including the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce's Great Living Cincinnatian Award and induction into the International Science and Engineering Hall of Fame. The University of Cincinnati also named a building in his honor.

George Rieveschl, who invented the drug Benadryl while he was a chemical engineering professor at the University of Cincinnati, died Thursday morning at Christ Hospital following a bout of pneumonia. He was 91.

A 1937 alumnus of UC, Rieveschl was honored last year as Benadryl reached its 60th anniversary. He was an important benefactor to UC. Mary Sue Cheeseman, who worked in development at UC for 29 years, estimated that he had contributed about $10 million.

"He was constantly giving of his resources and of himself," she said. "It was always about the other person or the university. He never was a person who needed to brag or needed the attention."

George Rieveschl, Jr., Papers, 1916-2007, Collection No. 19

The collection contains primarily papers covering George Rieveschl, Jr's, professional career, including his education. There are significant holdings, however, on his personal life, including correspondence, philanthropic work, and community involvement. Rieveschl was a chemist, known for his creation of Benadryl®. The papers cover his life from beginning to end, 1916-2007, and slightly beyond, with the bulk covering from the 1930s (the beginning of his advanced educational pursuits) until his death in 2007.

What many do not know is that Rieveschl continued to pursue his craft throughout his life, even though he never became a professional artist. He painted a series of landscapes, several pieces of abstract art, designed holiday cards to send to friends and family, and not to mention the hundreds of doodles that exist in the Rieveschl archives collection, most of which are quite elaborate. His doodles are an indication of the level of thought processes running through his mind so much of the time, and his commitment to focusing on the tasks at hand (doodling has been show to help focus attention).

Here's another version of the PHP (for Prvi Hrvatski Pistolj - First Croatian Pistol), the MV-9, made in the early 1990's in Croatia. The MV's are often described as a love child of a Walther P38 and a Beretta 92, as it has features of both. The barrel locking system is the tilting wedge with a "push button" used by both the Beretta and the Walther. It has the Walther's exposed barrel and the Beretta's high capacity magazine. The MV-9 seen here is somewhat shorter than the MV-17, as the muzzle is almost flush with the front of the slide.

In spite of the fact that it's a first attempt and that there was a particularly nasty war going on at the time, the pistol is fairly well made. It has the checkerboard Croatian crest stamped on the top of the slide, just behind the exposed portion of the barrel.

This one shows some use as evidenced by dings, scratches and honest wear, compared to the MV17, which came to me in nearly pristine, unissued condition.

The MV pistols were made by the arsenal which later became HS Arms, manufacturer of the HS2000, sold in the U. S. as the Springfield Armory XD series.

Non-Smoker On Black

I quit smoking on Monday night. I think about having a cigarette probably every 5 minutes. It will just pop in my head "Oh, time for a smoke!!" Then I remember.

I watch that show Intervention, and I always think for an alcoholic, how sad and hard it would be to have an addiction to alcohol. To where you could NEVER have a drink for the rest of your life. I hardly ever drink, but if I want to drink I can, and I can not drink for another 8 months.

So, with cigarettes, I suppose I am like an alcoholic or any addict for that matter. I can never have another cigarette for the rest of my life.

Do you know this makes me cry inside? It isn't even that I'm addicted to the nicotine so much. I've never had a real strong "Oh my God I NEED a cigarette RIGHT NOW before I kill someone." feeling. I just truly enjoy smoking. So much so that I smoked nearly 2 packs within a 24 hour period. Yeah, I know. Crazy! I could out smoke probably anyone.

The thought of not going on a long drive on the weekend without smoking, makes me sad. What will I do??? Going and having a coffee, and not smoking? Seriously??? I've seen people do it, but I don't' know how?!

It's hard too when the dude at 7-11 knows what cigarettes I smoke, and immediatly goes for them. I went there yesterday, and had to stop him and tell him I quit.

I've had so many split second thoughts of running to 7-11 and just buying a pack. Screw it. Then I come back down to reality, and I realize the only good reason I have to continue smoking is: I like it.

I have a list of reason to not smoke. Mainly, I don't have the best genes out there. Since my Dad died at 29 years old from heart disease, dying has never been far from my mind. It's actually always been pretty much right there ever since I realized about death and dying. I want to live as long as I can, and be here to see my Grandchildren. I can't imagine anything worse then dying before my children are grown.

So, yeah. I've got quite the battle ahead of me. I'm not even 48 hours into this. I'm feeling pretty good though about it. I'm even taking out $10 a day, just to see how much money I actually throw away.

My hair still smells clean. I love that!

A view from the top of the stairs leading from El Alto down to La Paz (in the background).

El Alto is the sister city of La Paz, right next to it but above, in the altiplano. While La Paz expands downwards along the valley, with the richest population leaving in the lowest parts, El Alto is growing further from it, peopled by poor immigrants from the highlands.

Sick-boy, in his faded blue jeans,

Sick-boy, black leather jacket scene.

Sick-boy, he's always in trouble

With the law don't ya know...

Sick-boy, he carries a switch blade knife

Sick-boy, likes to get into fights.

Sick-boy, he'll go drinkin'

With the boys all night long.

Sick-boy, rides a big motorbike,

Sick-boy, combs his hair up just right.

Sick-boy, with tattoos up and

Down his arms, don't ya know...

Sick-boy, he's got a girl wrapped around

There's a saying old, says that love is blind

Still we're often told, seek and ye shall find

So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind

Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet

He's the big affair I cannot forget

Only man I ever think of with regret

I'd like to add his initial to my monogram

Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb

There's a somebody I'm longing to see

I hope that he turns out to be

Someone who'll watch over me

I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood

I know I could always be good

To one who'll watch over me

Although he may not be the man

Some girls think of as handsome

To my heart he carries the key

Won't you tell him please to put on some speed

Follow my lead

Oh how I need

Someone to watch over me

Someone to watch over me

The Salton Sea is a saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault in California's Border Region. The lake occupies the lowest elevations of the Salton Sink in the Colorado Desert of Imperial and Riverside Counties in Southern California. Like Death Valley, it is located below sea level, with the current surface of the Salton Sea at 226 ft (69 m) below sea level. The deepest area of the sea is 5 ft (1.5 m) higher than the lowest point of Death Valley. The sea is fed by the New, Whitewater, and Alamo rivers, as well as a number of minor agricultural drainage systems and creeks.

The lake covers a surface area of approximately 376 sq mi (970 km2), 241,000+/- acres, the largest in California. While it varies in dimensions and area with changes in agricultural runoff and rain, it averages 15 mi (24 km) by 35 mi (56 km), with a maximum depth of 52 ft (16 m), giving a total volume of about 7,500,000 acre·ft (9.25 km3), and annual inflows averaging 1,360,000 acre·ft (1.68 km3). The lake's salinity, about 44 g/L, is greater than the waters of the Pacific Ocean (35 g/L), but less than that of the Great Salt Lake and the concentration is increasing by about 1 percent annually.

'Untitled' On Black

Yesterday, a photo buddy visited me and we decided to go to the Quezon Memorial Circle to spend the afternoon and shoot.

After the shoot, we uploaded our shots and when he saw this one, asked me what was it that I saw in this photo.

Hmmm, that question surprised me and realized that I'm just a happy snapper and photograph almost anything that catches my fancy.

But back to the question, what was it that I saw in this? Hahaha, the golden sunlight that casted on the curled iron wrought, the similar color and tone of the wrought and the background, the slightly decaying paint on the iron... etc. My first time to explain to someone what it is that I'm trying to convey. Hmmm, never thought of that. Hmmmm.

Honestly, I wanted to frame the window in between the two rods but couldn't get high enough, I already tiptoed to get to that angle... and more than that I had to pre-occupy myself while waiting for the golden hour to cast its spell on the Quezon Memorial shrine. So this is an exercise in dof or macro while waiting for my main objective, to get a landscape shot.

Hahaha, I started shooting two years ago and haven't gotten over with landscape photos, although I'm trying to discover other areas of photography.

Still confused as to how I should take photography or how I'm doing so far, I asked another photo buddy (my idol who inspired and encouraged me to take photography) what kind of photos or photography I have. And so I hear, I am a "purist". Hmmmm.

Well, I finally made it back to Richmond Park yesterday, it's only taken me FIVE YEARS!!! Not been there since 2009!!! and I nearly didn't go yesterday either, because of initial bad weather and engineering works on the railway...it was a Sunday I guess, that's power for the course!!!

Anyhoo, I was rewarded with my FIRST ever Fallow deer Rut, which was pretty intense for 5 minutes!!

Hope everybody had a great Weekend..:)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~ This article is about the deer genus. For other uses, see Dama (disambiguation).

Description ~ The male fallow deer is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn. Adult bucks are 140–160 cm (55–63 in) long with a 85–95 cm (33–37 in) shoulder height, and typically 60–100 kg (130–220 lb) in weight; does are 130–150 cm (51–59 in) long with a 75–85 cm (30–33 in) shoulder height, and 30–50 kg (66–110 lb) in weight. The largest bucks may measure 190 cm (75 in) long and weigh 150 kg (330 lb). Fawns are born in spring at about 30 cm (12 in) and weigh around 4.5 kg (9.9 lb). The life span is around 12–16 years.

The species has great variations in the colour of their coats, with four main variants, "common", "menil", melanistic and leucistic – a genuine colour variety, not albinistic. The white is the lightest coloured, almost white; common and menil are darker, and melanistic is very dark, sometimes even black (easily confused with the sika deer).

Common: Chestnut coat with white mottles that are most pronounced in summer with a much darker, unspotted coat in the winter. Light-coloured area around the tail, edged with black. Tail is light with a black stripe.

Menil: Spots more distinct than common in summer and no black around the rump patch or on the tail. In winter, spots still clear on a darker brown coat.

Melanistic (black): All year black shading to greyish-brown. No light-coloured tail patch or spots.

Leucistic (white, but not albino): Fawns cream-coloured, adults become pure white, especially in winter. Dark eyes and nose, no spots.

Most herds consist of the common coat variation, yet it is not rare to see animals of the menil coat variation. The Melanistic variation is rarer and white very much rarer still.

Only bucks have antlers, which are broad and shovel-shaped (palmate) from three years. In the first two years the antler is a single spike. They are gazing animals; their preferred habitat is mixed woodland and open grassland. During the rut bucks will spread out and females move between them, at this time of year fallow deer are relatively ungrouped compared to the rest of the year when they try to stay together in groups of up to 150.

Agile and fast in case of danger, fallow deer can run up to a maximum speed of 30 mph (48 km/h) over short distances (being naturally less muscular than other cervids such as roe deer, they are not as fast). Fallow deer can also make jumps up to 1.75 metres high and up to 5 metres in length.

I picked up the Lensbaby Fisheye Optic at Imaging USA this year. Initially I thought I would have pretty limited reasons to use it. I might pull it out for the occasional odd portrait or something but a true 180° fisheye is most often used in rap videos and at skate parks, neither of which do I often photography.

But, I am finding it a lot more useful than I originally imagined. Human vision is a funny thing. We are aware, via peripheral vision, of almost 180° of the world but we only have good focus on about 10° of out vision. Our eyes and brain see a lot but we only focus on a small sliver of that. As distorted and odd as these round images look, there is something familiar to them just because they do show the world as we see it… sort of. On a full-frame sensor camera, like the Canon 5D MKII, a 12mm fisheye like this Lensbaby optic produces a round image and much of the sensor never sees any light. The view is so wide that you have to be careful that you don’t get your feet, camera strap or elbow in the shot.

In spite of all the distortion that the lens gives, it provides a very deep depth of field even when focused very close and shot at f/4 like (the aperture I used on these shots).

There are a few drawbacks to the Lensbaby fisheye when you use it in their Composer rig. First, you have to be very careful that the image is centered properly or you end up with some of the elegant sphere getting cut off. It is also manual focus and because everything looks so small through the viewfinder, you really have to shift to Live View and digitally zoom in to focus properly. This is not a big deal if you have a little time to compose your shot but tends to preclude and “on the fly shooting.”

Anyway, it’s a fun addition to the arsenal of obscure lenses that I seem to love and fawn over. It is also a good bit cheaper than the Canon EF 8-1fmm lens f/4 L USM (which will set you back $1,400 and only stops down to f/4 while the lens baby goes to f/2). I am sure that the Auto Focus of the Canon would take a lot of the leg-work out of using an extreme fisheye and that the optics are cleaner, but I have heard reports that the clarity, when stopped down and used properly are not worth the price difference.

But, enough camera geek talk. I hope you enjoy this somewhat unusual view of Louisiana and Mississippi during the winter that I photographed yesterday on my ride back from Lake Bruin. I’m looking forward to putting this lens to more remunerative use on my next portrait assignment. All in all, highly recommended.

Papua New Guinea is one of the most diverse countries on Earth, with over 850 indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies, out of a population of just under 7 million. It is also one of the most rural, with only 18% of its people living in urban centres. The country is one of the world's least explored, culturally and geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought to exist in the interior of Papua New Guinea.

'427 AC Cobra BW' On Black

The Shelby Cobra was an Anglo-American sports car built in the 1960s. It was not the first car to combine a lightweight European chassis and aluminum body with a big American V8 engine, but it is possibly the most famous. The later, larger-engined cars are still among the highest-performing road vehicles ever sold.

1964 saw an even larger engine fitted; Ford's famed 427 in³ racing engine (7.0 L) developing 485 bhp (362 kW) and attaining a top speed of 163 mph (262 km/h). Even more extensive rework of the AC design was needed to accomplish this; the big-block FE-series engine was much too large to fit in the standard engine bay. The front tires were moved outward, with extended wheel-arches to cover them, and a new coil-spring suspension was designed.

Comments welcomed. (I find this a bit blue... unsure as to how that happened, shade?)

The sun was just starting to set - staying there a bit longer may have been nicer, but I was already losing the trees below, hence the SHDR treatment. No mustard on this one, though upping saturation, contrast and blacks certainly does make it pop, it looked pretty cheesy afterward (still a landscape shot, cheesy by definition?)

So here's how I made it:

Following HDR tutorial from stuckincustoms. Hopefully it's not too noticeable.

Manfrotto tripod with stubborn 055 head. I've had it for thirteen years, and it still works, just complains under the new weight of the MeiKe MK-D300 + 8 AAs.

Nikon D300 + 50mm f1.8

No filters (the UV filter was dirty)

Mirror-up mode and remote release were used.

5 bracketed shots with manual focus and manual exposure, with speed bracketing.

Put together using Photomatrix and stuckincustoms settings, tweaked ever so slightly.

Re-imported the resulting 16bit TIFF to Adobe Lightroom after using the Photomatrix plugin, and cropped square (1:1).

Added +0.25 to the overall exposure (to make it look better on a white background that makes everything look dark).

I've decided I need something refreshing. Either a weekend trip, a concert, or just something FUN. I think this "anxious" feeling is caused by things in life being too repetitive. Which actually makes PLENTY of sense. I'm longing for something new, something different.

Justin Bieber's USmile video came out today. I like it :) <3

The weather is freaking AWESOME. It's cool now, I can finally wear a jacket and jeans without them sticking to me! A great breeze, but still some sunshine. It's great. How's the weather where all of you are living? :)

I'm working tomorrow and Saturday, so I'm hoping I can still get a good picture up! :)

I hope everyone is doing well, not much to talk about today! :/

P.S. I need a better camera :/
