With all the great parts on the PaB walls right now I was planning another Small PaB Cup challenge ala Mantiskings's Single Set Challenge like the one I did last January, but after scoping out the wall, making a plan and buying the cupful of parts, I haven't had much time and I lost motivation.
A few days ago I sat down with the cup and started fiddling and this happened. I don't think I'm going to finish the challenge, but at least I got something from the cup. Once finished, it struck me how much it looked like a Poke Ball. HA!
Úbeda, Jaén (Spain).

The main parish church of Santa María de los Reales Alcázares displays the most significant mixture of architectural styles, to be found in the city. The buildings historic and artistic patronage is complex and its solid external appearance is of a defensive fortification.
Built on an archaeological site where remains of bronze and Roman civilisations have been found, the Church rests of the foundations of the main mosque of Muslim Úbeda. According to tradition the Romans built a temple here dedicated to Diane. After the conquest of the town by Ferdinand II the Saint, in 1223, the Mosque was consecrated in the Catholic faith with the title High Parish Church of the Royal Alcazares and of Our Lady of the Ascension. In 1259 it achieved the rank of High Collegiate Church. In 1852 the Church's collegiate rank was withdrawn, reversing to the rank of High Parish Church. Being the principal temple of the city, it has preserved important archives and a multitude of treasures. The latter being donations and numerous priviledges bestowed by Popes, Kings and bishops.
Its external appearance blends Medieval and Classicist styles. Being built on to the ols walls of the fortress, Santa María church has been the main witness to the great changes and strife of Úbeda. Today it still offers a special attraction to the town which is due to its great historical character and the population's identification with its heritage.

CASTELLANO

Cakile maritima
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cakile maritima, the European searocket, is a common plant in the mustard family. It is widespread in Europe, especially on coastlines, and it can now be found in other areas of the world where it has been introduced. It is an inhabitant of the west and east coasts of North America, where it has the potential to become a noxious weed. This is an annual plant which grows in clumps or mounds in the sand on beaches and bluffs. The shiny leaves are fleshy, green and tinted with purple or magenta, and long-lobed. It has white to light purple flowers and sculpted, segmented, corky brown fruits one to three centimeters long. The fruits float and are water-dispersed.
Eruca-marítima
Origem: Wikipédia, a enciclopédia livre.
Come from my buddy Tom. I'm not a "Christmas" guy and his work always brightens up an otherwise annoying time for me.
Tom does not use photo shop. He has a great eye and stumbles upon "scenes" like this Hasidic statuette in front of a Lawrence Welk boxset at flea markets, thrift shops etc. He's been sending me gems like this every year for the last ten or so. What a guy!
Check out his website for his "serious" work:
"Home baked pie" in classical soft focus and blurred vignette background treatment, this is my interpretation of the past; I made it a bit blurry as I may not know how the place may really looked like but in my vision, this is my own rendition.
Feel the melancholy of the past... Image taken at the Heritage Stewart farm house Circa 1894.
The house was beautifully restored by the city council... feel the nostalgia and find out how people lived in the 1800's....
You may say that we are lucky to be born in this modern era, where everything is ready and served and water source is readily available within our reach :o)

It was Kim's turn to pick the theme this week. She loves bokeh so I was unsurprised when she said "you've got to be out of focus in the background somewhere." I really wondered what to do.
I had two trips to London on business last week. The head office is just next to St. Paul's Cathedral and I love the short walk out to the Millennium Bridge. On the train on the way down I thought of this shot and at an appropriate moment, snuck out of the office and quick took some shots. As I've so often found, it's not until I get the images onto my computer screen that I can really see what is going on and spend a little time reviewing the process and my thoughts. I took some good shots but none that were great. Fortunately I knew I had another opportunity for a reshoot.
On the train on the way down the second time I was worried, the weather was dull, grey and overcast and whilst the forecast predicted it would clear, one of the things I loved about the first shoot were the wonderful fluffy clouds and deep blue skies. When I did manage to get out of the office, the skies had cleared somewhat. What I did achieve though, were much better compositions. In the end it was an easy decision which way to go.
Just for fun, I've included below two situational shots from the first shoot and an outtake from the second shoot.
----
Next week, Kim and I are doing our thing. However, I'm really loving the themes and I think we might come back to it again but we need some ideas. Anyone got any?
My self-portrait project involves taking a picture each week that I post the following week on a Thursday. Feel free to critique - I welcome it. Thanks

Today was another really tough day of hard work.
It started badly with the viewing of our work on the "Tea or Coffee" weekly theme with our studio teacher, and the work we did was not what he was thinking about.
We were too late at noon to grab the equipment we needed for the work of the afternoon so we had to eat something as quickly as possible and get back to the studio to finally take away a Mamiya RB67, a studio flash and a 120 Superia 400 ISO film.
We had less then 3 hours to go to town and shoot the film in order to make portraits on location of people working.
I was with Loic, Hugo and Florent with only 1 medium format camera for all of us... 4 different places to go to, including time to meet the guys, set up, find the good light, the good settings, to shoot, and to pack all things again... And be on time at school for the economic course, the "finish to kill" last course of the day until 7.15PM...
Luckily we met Simon who's already done his job and he lend to Loic and I his own RB67.
Loic had a appointment at Corezone shop but first we went to Hurley shop to shoot my film.
I've been there several times to take some testing portrait for shool, and the guys over there are really too nice and cool ! A huge thanks to them !
So this was a testing shot we did with the 7D to test the light before shooting with the Mamiya. Can't wait to see the analog results, this was a test for our studio course and my teacher will judge me on this work.
Also Loic did some cool shot with the Corezone shop's crew who are awesome !
Today I've chosen to quote lyrics from a Jack White's band The Raconteurs because it's a huge song and it's also on the original soundtrack of an awesome surf movie with Rob Machado.
I'm a huge fan of The Raconteurs and Jack White's music in fact.
Rob Machado is the guy on the picture behind Loic, it's an awesome surfer sponsored by Hurley that you should watch surfing !

a quote by the lovely Eleanor Powell.
So, what WILL YOU become? (:
I have this journal that I bought at Barnes And Noble, and I love it.
Every single page has an inspiring quote along with a verse from the Bible
that matches the quote. Every time I write in it, I feel so inspired.
When I write about how bad I want to give up, I look up at the top of the page, and
i see a quote that tells me not to.
and at the bottom, there's a beautiful bible verse that tells me God has created plans for me.
I guard that journal with my life.
and I carry it everywhere I go.<333
I want to give God the greatest gift.
because he's blessed me, well, with my own life.
That is why i don't want to take my life for granted.
I want to make something out of it and please Him with it.
I want to be a photographer.
A photographer that through pictures, will show how lovely and merciful He is
to a world that lives and is lost in hopelessness, sadness, pain, death and fear.
and that He can change lives.
I want to be a person, that when people look at me, they can see clearly that Jesus lives
in my heart.
You are my reason for my joy. You are my reason for my happiness. Because of You I can rejoice. Because of you i treasure every breath, I owe this to You. For all that You do. To worship you in spirit and in truth. I live my life for You. I give you my heart. I give you my soul. Lord I give You my everything.
Note:
I might be a little silly, but the reason behind this picture was that
I was looking up, and when I saw the sky and the power lines
I was instantly reminded of a piece of paper (:
The sky, being the paper, and the power lines being the lines in which we write (:
It reminded me of my journal...<

Inside the Walled Garden and a view of the tower of the 12th Century Church.
I've finished this set, arranged it in roughly chronological order following the route I took around the garden that morning, and have added a scan of the brochure and map/plan of the garden at the end of the set. If you have time, you can run the SLIDESHOW in FullScreen Mode and get an idea what the place was like in mid May.

When Monty Don produced his television series for the BBC, Around the World in 80 Gardens, a few years ago, he chose only two English Gardens - Sissinghurst and Rousham. I had visited Sissinghurst on two of my earlier visits, but I decided I needed to see Rousham on this trip, so I took the 30 minute train trip from crowded, bustling Oxford one cloudy morning and then the easy 15 minute walk from the Heyford station, and was at the entrance to the gardens by 9:45.
It was like entering a different world. I got my 5 Pound ticket from a vending machine in the courtyard, and had been wandering around the green landscape for almost an hour before I encountered even one other visitor.
According to the Wikipedia entry: "Rousham House is still the home of the Cottrell-Dormer family, who keep the garden and estate so uncommercialised that no book exists to guide the unwitting tourist, and no shop sells postcards or souvenirs. A visit to Rousham today is very similar to one enjoyed by a visitor in the 18th century. The gardens and buildings are superbly maintained but not manicured. The visitor is not made afraid to tread on the grass or to pause for thought on a rustic bench. In such a state a spirit of the 18th century survives at Rousham."
For a very well written history of the garden, begun by Charles Bridgman, and refined and completed by William Kent by 1741, here is a link to the entire entry:

Artist Statement
The platters I have sent to this exhibition combine several ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots were made to demonstrate wealth and power. They were made to tell a story, to commemorate an event or a person, and to demonstrate skill and challenge the abilities of the artisans who made them. The second tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters were a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The third and last tradition is the One-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor through the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a tradition as old as the use of the material. I have always felt that humor has been given short shift as a serious emotion. Art work that uses humor and has been actively excised from collections of serious art. It may be that we do not understand the function of humor as well as we understand the function of the other emotions.
In the work presented I have tried to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are big to give them a slightly overblown sense of their own importance and to be able to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the table. The large size to fit the importance of large gatherings.
I have tried to replace historical patterns with objects reduced to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of personal interests. Images of turn of the century technology, (the Machine Age), are a personal favorite. Subject matter ranges from humorous depiction of everyday objects to gender stereotypes. My abilities as A draftsman are limited but seem to be adequate for the kind and quality of image that the subject requires. They have a cartoon look as opposed to the crisp complexity of fine china.
The clay body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and makes no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica style and is done very much like a watercolor on soft paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an additional firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere using an electric kiln.

PS: Like I said earlier, I'm leaving tonight on a 3 week trip to Spain... I'm not sure how much internet connection I'll have this time. So just in case I can't upload often or visit your photos either... have a great August and see you soon!!!! Though... now that I think of it, I might leave Anton in charge of uploading a few of my latest good photos, that lay processed on my desktop computer... :-)))

Welcome to crazy house...
This is what I have imagined, just right a year ago, when I find again to myself in front of this entrance.
It was the first time that put a foot in a mental asylum and I still was not clear my road, after everything had changed, I had changed ... The way was now clear…
Who know me well, know what he wanted to say that trip, perhaps you could have guessed it but this picture holds in me all the sensations of this year that it’s about to pass…
One particular year,I call it "crazy", with people who are important in my life revenue, experienced situations, sometimes absurd, but always moments of growth and also with people who frequent also here.
One year in growing, a year that has provided both going to Conclusion maybe down…
But we see that was so that had to go, to give the office for a future unsure 2008…
Yes, unsure…
But with the awareness that we can not go back, but in any case, always and still ahead...
Happy new year, guys
The Spanish brought chocolate to Europe when they conquered South America in the 16th century but in recent generations they have not been kown for their chocolate skills. That is, until now.
This small box is from a new chain of chocolate stores named Xocao. In two layers the upper layers contain: pistachio milk, green tea milk, cardomam white, and 4 spices white - each just as tasty as the other!

After cutting my head off last week for the sake of photography, I figured I owed it to myself to take a picture with my head; even if it looks better behind the camera than in front of it. I actually had constructed this photo in my head a few weeks ago before going to Ocracoke, but never had the time to execute it. This is typically how I look on any given night with all my gear slammed into this yellow messenger bag with a flash stand strap to the back. I initially tried shooting this shot at f/1.4 for bigger Bokeh balls, but the depth of field was much to shallow. Even at f/2, the bag is slightly out-of-focus. I typically avoid out-of-focus elements in front of the subject, it is a photography rule I choose not to break. As always when doing self portraits and especially at night the greatest challenge is getting the autofocus to work properly. I tried shooting outside my normal method and triggered the camera with remote, but the camera never could focus in the dark before taking the picture. What I like to do in this case; is stand in my position with my camera and focus on the tripod, then switch to manual focus and set my shot up. I had fun setting this shot up and I was pleased to see the results after weeks of waiting to shoot this shot.
until tomorrow,
enjoy

Mon enfant, ma soeur,
Songe à la douceur
D'aller là-bas vivre ensemble !
Décoreraient notre chambre ;
Dont l'humeur est vagabonde ;
C'est pour assouvir
Ton moindre désir
Qu'ils viennent du bout du monde.
- Les soleils couchants
Revêtent les champs,
Les canaux, la ville entière,
D'hyacinthe et d'or ;
Recently I got a quick panning lesson from a very good photographer and I'm so addicted to it now. This is the most decent shot I've taken since then.
Some things about the image:
The red block in the background is a pile of bricks. There's a lot of construction going on in Vietnam from urban zones to rural areas. As a result, you can see construction materials everywhere.
The bike is a 50cc Honda imported from Japan. People used to import a great number of used bikes like this in the 80s and 90s. This vehicle is still very popular in the countryside since it's cheap, reliable, fuel saving and very suitable for carrying goods on long bumpy roads : )
Just have a look at the blue container that she's carrying. There are a lot of containers like this for sale in Vietnam. Many were used to store chemicals or even hazardous waste in developed countries. Don't know how they get to markets in Vietnam. Due to ignorance, a lot of people buy them to store food and water without knowing how dangerous they are : (
As you probably notice, her shirt looks quite strange. Well, most Vietnamese women have several shirts like this as they help protect skin from the burning tropical sun : )
Last but not least, there's something special about her helmet. Since September 2007, people are required to wear helmet when riding a motorbike in Vietnam. The problem is Vietnamese women hate exposing their skin especially their face to the sun thus the brim made of cloth was born. It comes in many styles and colors to match all helmet designs on market. You can attach it to your helmet and take it off for washing when needed. Many girls even choose different brims to go with their clothes :D

The Monastery of Sant Benet de Bagés is a former Benedictine monastery, in the Catalan comarca of Bages. The Romanesque monastery was thoroughly restored at the beginning of the twentieth century by the Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
The monastery was founded about 950 by the noble Salla and his consort Ricarda, of the house of the viscounts of Osona . According to the founding legend, Salla traveled to Rome to have his institution authorized, and to have it depend directly on the Holy See, the usual method for preserving the community from interference from the bishop of Vic, in whose diocese it lay. The abbey church was consecrated 3 December 972, witnessed by a gathering of notables: Borrell II, Count of Barcelona, the bishops Frugifer of Vic, Guisad of Urgell and Pere of Barcelona, the viscount Guadald of Osona, and three of the four offspring of the recently deceased founder, his son Isarn and the sisters Quíxol and Ego, at the head of witnesses both laymen and priests, in a grand ceremonial recorded in the surviving act of consecration.
The community was dedicated to the Holy Trinity and to Benedict of Nursia (Sant Benét in Catalan) founder of the order, and Peter and Andrew, all guarantors of its future orthodoxy. The founder secured dispensations that the future abbots would be chosen from among their descendents, making the abbey a form of proprietary church, an agreement that would soon lead to disputes among the various branches of their lineage as to choice of abbots.
From 965, the abbey church held the supposed relics of Saint Valentine, enclosed in a wooden reliquary with plates of silver depicting miraclesa of Saint Valentine, rediscovered in 1863 in the church of Navarcles. At the beginning of the eleventh century the monastery passed under the direction of the Abbey of Saint Peter of Tomeras at Narbonne, from which the community freed itself in 1108. In 1125 Sant Benet de Bagés suffered from an attack by Moors that required a rebuilding, financed by local nobles who required in return the right to be buried in its consecrated ground.
The most splendid age of Sant Benet de Bagés was in the fourteenth century. The Black Death left the community with only two survivors, in a period that witnessed the beginning of its decline. On 9 November 1593, by order of Pope Clement VIII the community passed under the direction of the Abbey of Montserrat, and remained so until it was suppressed in 1820, serving as a place of retirement for Montserrat's community of monks. By the "law of desamortización" of 1835, all religious orders in Spain were required to render upo their possessions. The crumbling ancient structure attracted the interest of intellectuals who organised visits to it in the late nineteenth century. The architect Puig i Cadafalch and the painter Ramon Casas encouraged the mother of Casas to buy the property in 1907; in 1910 it passed into the hands of Casas, who commissioned Puig i Cadafalch to restore it. Since 2000, when it was purchased from Casas' heirs it has belonged to the Caixa de Manresa, a financial institution that has undertaken its maintenance.

Shot it at Gangasagar fair,Gangasagar Mela is the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal. This fair is held where the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal form a nexus. Hence the name Gangasagar Mela. The river Ganga which originates in the Gangotri glacier in the snow clad Himalayas, descends down the mountains, reaches the plains at Haridwar, flows through ancient pilgrimage sites such as Benares and Prayag, and drains into the Bay of Bengal. Sagar Island, at the mouth of the river Hooghly in Bengal where the Ganga breaks up into hundreds of streams, and drains into the sea, is honored as a pilgrimage site.
A dip in the ocean, where the Ganga drains into the sea is considered to be of great religious significance particularly on the Makara Sankranti day when the sun makes a transition to Capricorn from Sagittarius and this town becomes home to vast fairs, drawing visitors and recluses from all over the state. There is a common belief among the locals that the girls who take the holy dip get handsome grooms and the boys get beautiful brides. When they are done with the ritual obligations, they head towards the Kapilmuni Temple situated nearby, to worship the deity as a mark of respect.

Erotic photography is a style of art photography of an erotic, sexually suggestive and even sexually provocative nature. Though the subjects of erotic photography are usually completely or mostly unclothed, that is not a requirement. Erotic photography should be distinguished from pornographic photography, which is of a sexually explicit nature.

The Victoria and Albert Museum (often abbreviated as the V&A) in London is the world's largest museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. Founded in 1852 as the South Kensington Museum, the V&A has since grown to now cover some 12.5 acres[2] and 145 galleries. Its collection spans 5000 years of art, from ancient times to the present day, in virtually every medium, from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and North Africa.
The holdings of ceramics, glass, textiles, costumes, silver, ironwork, jewellery, furniture, medieval objects, sculpture, prints and printmaking, drawings and photographs are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The museum possesses the world's largest collection of post-classical sculpture, the holdings of Italian Renaissance items are the largest outside Italy. The departments of Asia include art from South Asia, Japan, China, Korea and the Islamic world. The East Asian collections are among the best in Europe, with particular strengths in ceramics and metalwork, while the Islamic collection, alongside the Musée du Louvre and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is amongst the largest in the world.
Alongside other neighbouring institutions, including the Natural History Museum and Science Museum, the V&A is located in what is termed London's "Albertopolis", an area of immense cultural, scientific and educational importance. Since 2001, the Museum has embarked on a major £150m renovation program[3] which has seen a major overhaul of the departments including the introduction of newer galleries, gardens, shops and visitor facilities. Following in similar vein to other national UK museums, entrance to the museum has been free since 2001.

This Julie's Pond or as more well known, The Heart Shaped Pond, please read the brief explanation
From Wikipedia
Prince's Lodge was named for the estate His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Duke of Kent resided in while in Halifax in the 1700s .In 1794, Prince Edward arrived to serve in Halifax.with his French mistress Julie St. Laurent. The Duke was often entertained at the "Friar's Cell" and liked it so much that Wentworth felt obliged to offer it to him during his stay in Halifax. Prince Edward accepted, and renovated the residence and developed the gardens around the estate by landscaper from England. The result was what is today Hemlock Ravine Park , 185 acres (0.75 km2) with a heart shaped pond known as Julie's Pond, and was constructed by the Duke in honor of his mistress.
The Wentworth's resumed living in the lodge When Prince Edward returned to England. Now called the Prince's Lodge, it was here that Sir John established the Rockingham Club. But after Sir John died, the estate was neglected. By 1870, in ruins, it was sold at auction and divided into building lots. All that remains of the original estate is the Rotunda, which the Nova Scotia Government acquired in 1959. It is a small, round music room that stands on a knoll overlooking the Bedford Basin.
This is a shot of a local horse farm (don't recall which one) from a couple of years back at about this same time of the year. It's a nice example of how good software can bring out the beauty of a shot that otherwise may not have made much impression. I used Lightroom to adjust the saturation, contrast, vibrance, and a few other things, and to push the yellows in the grass a bit more toward green. So it's probably not as realistic as the actual scene was, but the end-result is more pleasing and allows the lines of the fences and the hills to present a more pleasant image. Pretty much postcard Central Kentucky.
As always, comments, suggestions, constructive criticisms, etc., are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I went out scouting for shooting locations with Sandy today for our food bank photos (we are going to have a seriously dark and twisted shot going up in the next month or so). While we were out Sandy taught me a new photography technique. It's called "Through the Viewfinder" (or TTV). You take a high quality dSLR with a macro lens and shoot through the viewfinder of an old camera. It gives a very cool effect. Kind of a soft, noisy, vintage sort of feel.
This is my first attempt at this kind of photography. I think it has potential though. Now I just need to get a good MACRO lens...
Thoughts?
If you've got some time, here is Sandy's stream:
www.flickr.com/photos/sandyphimester/
It's excellent! Sandy's been kind enough to teach me lighting and all sorts of other stuff.

I have been a HUGE fan of this man's work for a very longtime. I have played at many of the theatres he has designed. He is a Theater Designer and has worked on some of the most recognized theatres in the WORLD. It was an honor to get to spend a few hours with him and get to see him work! He showed me ALL the work he has done in his lifetime, I got to sit with him at his desk where he creates and designs these masterpieces!!!!!! I kept having to stop and just take it all in, when you have followed a person's work, and then get to actually sit and see them work, it is breathtaking. He is an ARTIST in every sense of the world. He knew he wanted to design theatres at the tender age of 4, when his mom took him to see a show. The lights, colors, textures, patterns, dancers, actors, etc all left a lifetime impression on him that lasts till this very day! He has miniature 1/8 scale models of all of his work, the intricate details that he puts into his models is beyond AMAZING!!! I feel truly inspired, blessed, and privileged to be one of the few people that have taken his portrait. He has invited me over to do more and also he let me know I can use his studio to do photoshoots anytime I want to. His studio in itself is a work of art, I will be sharing more pics of his studio and models in the days to come. I hope you enjoy this picture as much as I do.

P.S. My Hard Drive crashed yesterday, which is a bummer, but all is not lost. I was able to retrieve ALL of my Raw files, however lost ALL of my post processed pics. I only was able to retrieve my web resolution shots. So I have A LOT of work to do, but it is ok. I get to wake up and do what I LOVE to do everyday!
Another scene for NYC a couple weeks ago. This is the little NYPD station in Times Square.

I was tagged by Anna.Teresa, sooo:
1. I HATE gum and eggs; the mere smell of both make me want to gag. Lol.
2. I can drink milk with ANYTHING edible, seriously<3
3. I like the left side of my body (face and all) better than my right.
4. I used to have size 00 gauges, but then figured out they were completely pointless.
5. I have the best memory for the smallest, most random things.
6. I may not look it, but I'm Hispanic (Colombian and Puerto Rican) and speak/read/write fluent Spanish. My hips (don't lie) and curves are proof of my Latin blood.
7. Despite that, I'm actually quite petite; 5'2" and 105 lbs.
8. I have this super obsession with sunrises, sunsets, the sky in general, stars, and anything space-related. And Taylor Swift. Lol
9. 7 is my absolute favorite number. It's everywhereee, and in the Bible tons! Next is 11. I don't like even numbers at ALL.
10. I'm Christian; part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints aka LDS aka Mormon (:
BTW- I am discontinuing my 365 project. I'm a little disappointed in myself because I feel as though I never commit to anything, but it really IS so hard some days to take and upload good shots when you're busy 24/7. I'll probably still upload almost every day, but I'd rather not have the 365 pressure.

The Austin Strobist group did a Frank Frazetta Tribute Shoot. Frank Frazetta is/was a comic book and fantasy artist. This image was loosely inspired by Frazetta's "Cat Girl" print (warning: nudity). I'm thinking it looks more like a Rembrandt given the spot lighting. I shot for Frazetta and hit Rembrandt. Oh well!
Model: Sarah Snell
Lighting: Canon 580 EX II on full power camera left and slightly above the model. 1/2 inch gridded snoot.
Composition: Many, most, all (?) of Frazetta's paintings are composed with the subject dead center, from a wide angle, and with the viewer looking up at the subject. I went for that look here as well.
Post Processing: Most of the lighting in this shot was done "in camera". I did the following in post:
- Slight saturation adjustment to bring out the color of her skin, hair, and the color of the leaves.
- Very slight curves adjustment to increase contrast.
- Added some vignetting around the corners to draw the viewer into the frame.
Location: Balcones District Park, Austin TX
The Cat & Fiddle Inn is at the summit of the road between Buxton (Derbyshire) and Macclesfield (Cheshire) and is the second highest inn in England, at 515 m (1,689 ft) above above sea level.
The view looks NNW to Shining Tor (559 m) and its summit is a border point between Cheshire (to the L) and Derbyshire (to the R). It is the highest point in Cheshire.
The inn was originally built in 1813 and is just inside Cheshire by a few metres, Derbyshire being not far behind the building. The inn is completely surrounded by bleak Pennine moorland typical of much of the Peak District National Park. Apart from its own outbuildings, it's completely on its own. The bleak gloomy aspect is how it really was (heavy cloud and rain) when I took the photo - at midday! Also, the inn is constructed of local gritstone, with local gritstone on the roofs, and these have weathered almost to black. The inn was also shut for the Christmas/Boxing Day holiday so there were also no lights in the windows or illuminations.
CAT & FIDDLE PASS
The road here (A537) is popularly known as the 'Cat & Fiddle Road' because the inn is one of the few landmarks and significant buildings along its uppermost stretches. Although not usually referred to as a pass, it is one of several pass-like roads over the high moors between Buxton (Derbyshire) and the towns of the Cheshire lowlands to the W, and I like to refer to it as the 'Cat & Fiddle Pass'.
This road has long stretches of irregular tight bends and twists on both approaches to the summit especially on the Macclesfield side (in the direction of the camera), and is a challenging drive at the best of times, let alone in winter at night. It is a favourite road amongst motorcyclists but has been voted the most dangerous stretch of road on Britain mostly on account of its frequency of motorcycling accidents. However, recent safety measures have reduced the accident rate.

GEOLOGICAL NOTE

Iridonia, the gateway to the Outer Rim.
The red sphere was a dry, harsh world, the home to the hardy Zabrak. The Zabrak had a centuries-long tradition of hyperspace trade, rivalries with the Duros, and a shareholder’s slice of the pie when it came to making decisions about hyperspace tariffs. Their homeworld’s placement provided leverage, leverage that the current regime was glad to exploit.
The House of Kesh had ruled Iridonia for decades. Lord Kesh had proven himself a violent, unstable, vain tyrant who murdered outsiders and made his own people slaves. The rest of the galaxy might have ignored this, but Kesh also made a habit of choking the Coruscant-Dantooine hyperlanes. Hitting people’s bottom lines was a good way to draw their attention.
For over a month, a growing team of CFS diplomats had been hunkered down on Iridonia to try to negotiate a deal with its government, working to arrive at some sort of agreement, both among themselves and the Iridonian leadership. Everyone in the room had different priorities: some represented the CFS Merchant Core and just wanted to relax tariffs, others had the plight of the people in mind. Some wanted to take Kesh before a trial, deal with things peacefully. Others at the table would rather see him dead.
A sandstorm of intrigue surrounded the diplomats since the moment they arrived. Spies hung on every corner and doorway: CFS spies and Iridonian spies, and spies working for individual diplomats, advancing causes unbeknownst to their colleagues. While the gears of diplomacy grinded on, some had initiated more direct action.
Forgun Bohani had been the third diplomat to arrive in the Iridonian court. He was a clever old man, always watching and listening, who found himself on the side of a peaceful transition of power. He had listened to the bickering in the court long enough to decide a fresh voice was needed. He knew exactly who to summon: a young diplomat who had negotiated terms at Kril’Dor after the Pyerce insurrection, a rising star named Lan Honn. Honn seemed intelligent, studious, and honorable, precisely what was needed here. Bohani sent a message asking for Honn’s help, offering himself as a sponsor.
When the message arrived, Lan Honn was struck speechless. Once he had composed himself, calmed his excited nerves, and closed his gaping jaw, he jumped at the opportunity with appropriate seriousness. He became a tireless student of the Iridonian situation as he traveled, pouring over not only the current stakes of the negotiation, but Iridonian culture, art, and history. Anything that might help him understand their point of view. He stared out the viewport of his transport at the grim, dust-red planet’s surface.
Though he would soon join the CFS entourage, he chose to mask his arrival by docking at a swoop slum far from the city center. He traveled in plainclothes accompanied only by his bodyguard, the dangerous Esno Bo’Barbi.
The landing pad was deserted. The only people in sight were offworlders who looked more than worse-for-wear. As Honn and Bo’Barbi walked down the gangplank, a fat, bearded Lannik approached.
Honn turned to his companion. “Here comes Dak Sirah, a rogue if ever there was one, true and merry-faced though he be.”
“Aye,” replied the gruff Bo’Barbi. “Untiring after his own interest. Though if his and ours overlap, he becomes a useful fellow.”
Honn smiled at Sirah. “Dak! It’s good to see you. Live you on borrowed credits, or your own?”
“Lan Honn!” cried the bearded man. “Prince among men! Don’t you look…discrete. For once, I’m the handsomer of us two! For a diplomat, you make a lousy first impression, y’know. Don’t jest about my finances, I try to do my best.”
Honn grinned. “You’ve never once succeeded, though you’re not without other merit.”
Sirah peered at him. “Honest for a diplomat, too. Let’s put aside the squabbling, eh? I’m here on Bohani’s behalf, he got your message and sent me to lead you to the courts. I’d say welcome, but there’s nothing welcoming about Iridonia at present. What do you know about the situation, Honn?”
“I’ve read up on my way.”
“Ah! Of course you have. I should’ve known.”
“But pretend I haven’t. I want to hear it from your perspective.”
Dak sighed. “It’s a port of wolves, Honn. The Iridonians waste no pity or kindness on their own people, much less the Duros or offworlders. Both sides watch each other, constant with their spies. Yours truly, in fact, does some work on the side for Lord Bohani! Though, come to think of it, I wasn’t meant to let on to that.”
“I would think Bohani would bring on tighter-lipped spies. Though he’d be hard-pressed to find one more likable.”
“Ahhh, that’s my trick, there. No one suspects a guy like me to do anything more subtle than a public one-man-show! Keeps ‘em off the scent. It’s a good thing you’re here, Honn. It’s all been infighting and circling so far. Every day new proposals, new amendments, but nothin’ seems to stick. They’ve needed some fresh ideas, I think you’re just the one for it.”
“Thank you, Dak. I mean to be of service.”
Sirah scoffed. “You seem nervous. You kidding me? You’ll do great, you’re a bright guy. A lot brighter than some of the statues they’ve got at the table right now. Scaft, I nearly forgot to greet your bodyguard. Mister Bo’Barbi, the most dangerous man in the galaxy, enemy to nere’do’wells! A title I hope I don’t merit.”
Bo’Barbi raised an eyebrow. “An enemy to flatterers, too, mister Sirah.”
“Ah . . . Point taken. Lovely to make your acquaintance, sir! Ol’ Dak means no harm, no harm at all.” Sirah crinkled his jolly face. “Not unless you’re a bottle of Mantelli Scotch, anyway.”
"My girlfriend's got a boyfriend, funny
He doesn't make a dime all day
And all her girlfriends' boyfriends with money
What more can i say?
It's true
He never made it through a day of school
The only thing he studied was you
He knows your body better than you do
Maybe i'm your mr. right
Baby, maybe i'm the one you like
Maybe i'm a shot in the dark
And you're the morning light
Whoa
Maybe this is sad but true
Baby, maybe you've got nothing to lose
You could be the best of me
When i'm the worst for you
My girlfriend's got a boyfriend, running
To catch the bus to meet
To meet up with the boyfriend's girlfriend
Who's stunning
she's such a sight to see
It's true
The moment he layed eyes on you he knew
The only wish he wanted came true
He knows he's lucky that he met someone like you."

This is Russell Sweet. Some of you have seen him before in my photos. He's such a good model. I have so many pictures from today. I can't wait to share them.
This is part of a series. = )
The series Home Town Boy is about a local boy who is stuck in a small town. The series consists of photos all around his small town. It is nostalgic and he is just looking back on his small town existence, because now that he has graduated he is going off to bigger and better things.
This particular shot is at our local Snack Bar. A tiny little fast food joint that almost all of the teens in our town have worked at. haha

So ... didn't I swear myself that I won't crawl around in the wet grass after the rain, not me? ---
Severe thunder storms, hail and a tornado in the Lower Austria yesterday afternoon; the storms claimed two lives even (an older Herr died at an heart attackt, a 52-years old woman drowned in a creek that had grown to a raging river in the shortest time). Here, we had just rain.
Lugematud keldrid said jälle ujutada.
Meil siin kuiva koha peal oli ainult päev otsa õhk väga raske ja pärastlõunal sadas põhjalikult. Vihmase ilma lõpp ei paista.
This was a shoot from my first air show put on by the Navy Blue Angels. A fantastic show. These planes (for the show) are flying at speeds ranging from 150-450 mph, so high shutter speed is important to get sharp images and is not really difficult to achieve on sunny days like this one. The Blue Angels have a predetermined spot at which they perform some of their maneuvers like this one in which they pass by one another at a very close distance (remarkable) so here, shutter speed, aperture, steady camera and knowing that sweet spot where they pass is important to get sharp images. Here, I didn't know where that center point was so I panned with the number six plane and shot at 5 frames a second hoping to get the image I got, but because of my panning the number five plane became blurred (traveling the opposite direction of the pan). The show was wonderful and I learned a lot.
This image was shot with a 70-200VR lens at 5.6 and a shutter speed of 1/2500 sec.
