Okay, transferred with all the essentials to hand, still don't know what to do about the cartouche and have to start cutting soon.

To describe Denny Abbey as a 'multi-phase building' would be a considerable understatement. In its time it has been a Benedictine Monastery, a Templar retirement home, a nunnery, the home of a countess, a farmhouse and it even had a place in British jam-making as it belonged to the Chivers family and was used to grow strawberries. All these phases have left a mark on the building so the interior presents an overlapping and complex interpretation.

Located on the A10 trunk road, just north of Cambridge, Denny Abbey was founded as a Benedictine monastery in the 1150s, opening in 1159 as Denny Priory. But by 1169 the monks had returned to Ely and the site transferred to the Knights Templar as a preceptory for sick or aged Templars. When the Templars were suppressed in 1308 it passed to the Hospitallars but they lost interest in the site and it reverted to the Crown by 1324.
In 1327 King Edward III gave the site to the widowed Countess of Pembroke. She built accommodation for herself and gave the rest to the Poor Clares. The Countess never officially entered the order herself but she remained as a resident until her death in 1377 when her accommodation was taken over by the abbess.
The crossings and transepts visible on site belong to the Benedictines, the Templars added other parts and shortened the church, the Countess of Pembroke made her own extensive changes. All these were uncovered when archaeologists deconstructed the building on the 1970s. There are now a bizarre series of arches, blocked windows, windows built into windows or former doors and the whole presentation - today - is about as mad as a box of frogs. It is well signposted and it is just about possible to walk around and try to edit out which parts do not belong with which phase.
Today it is managed by the Farmland Museum (next door) and it is possible to buy separate tickets - you don't have to visit both if you don't want to.

It just so happens that she found her way in front of my camera as the AAR Superintendent's Special passed Canal Street on a unholy hot afternoon.
