Of all of Amtrak's heritage painted fleet, the Phase IV engines had proved most elusive for me. I don't think I ever even saw the prior engine, 184, before it was mysteriously repainted last year. Luckily, the new representative of the Phase IV livery is still looking fresh by the time it got to DC this weekend. After making a trip south on yesterday's Palmetto, I set out to catch the northbound return trip around Alexandria. The sun had gone into hiding by the time they appeared, but given the encroaching shadows I'm not mad about it. Hopefully this one sticks around the DC pool for a good while.

Shot in jpg the colours were all hyper inflated. Tried a few different ways to get the colour balance back to where it should be - obviously still needs some more work/somebody that knows what they’re doing. Still, it’s a stunning common tree snake (dendrelaphis punctulata, blue phase) and no bad photography or editing on my part can take that away.

“Bream”, from a series of large fish by Utagawa Hirishige. by Paul Ellis

Just one of many Ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock prints that I bought during a collecting phase in my younger life spending far too much money on them but I love them all!

This one is by Utagawa Hirishige, one of the masters of the art who lived from 1797 to 1858. It is from a series, untitled, on Large Fish and depicts a larger Black Bream, two smaller Sea Bream and Sansho Pepper. He produced this series between 1832 and 1833 when still a young man.

It is a large print, about 45cm wide.
