66761 catches the early morning sun as it passes Settle Junction signal box working an empty stone hoppers train to Arcow quarry from Doncaster (6M25).
Two days ago, while my birding friends had their binoculars and scope focused on the very distant birds at this location at Frank Lake, my eyes began to wander. Couldn't resist a rather fancy fence post (photo posted yesterday) and barbed wire : ) Also, just in case anyone is getting fed up of seeing owl photos on my photostream, I thought I would wait a day before posted another one, lol!
On 19 March 2016, I was on a birding day trip with a group of friends, going SE of Calgary, E of High River. Though the day started off rather cold, it gradually warmed up and was a beautiful day to be out in nature.
I will add our leader's report that he sent into eBird, adding that I did not see all of the sightings, as the birds were much too far away. As always, my camera lens was turned to various other things, too. Thanks so much, as always, Andrew, for a most enjoyable day! Thanks, too, Anne, for driving - I really appreciated the ride!
"We had 16 participants when we left Calgary on a sunny but frosty morning.
We arrived at the main gate around 10:00 am and set off, in a chilly -5 deg C to walk down to the outfall and then around to the blind. The recent cold nights had refrozen some of the lake, but it is still mostly open water.
Most obvious were the thousands of Pintails and hundreds of swans (mostly Tundra today). We did see the overwintering (presumably) Song Sparrow near the outfall. About 60-80 California Gulls, no other gulls that we could identify.
We left and went to High River for lunch, stopping by the Sutherland Shelterbelt to acknowledge the resident Great Horned Owl.
After lunch we circled the lake on the usual roads and ended up at the Basin 2 West Bay. Several more swans and finally, the Eurasian Wigeon, spotted by Tony Timmons. By lunchtime the temperature had reached about 10 deg C and continued to rise reaching ~14 deg C and making a perfect Alberta Spring (almost) afternoon.
Leaving Frank Lake we stopped in at Blackie to find mostly Starlings, and a few Eurasian Collared Doves.

From Blackie we stopped by Third Lake on the way back to Calgary. A huge number of birds there, somewhere between 4000 and 8000, generally somewhat distant. Mostly Pintails, but we also saw American Wigeon, Mallard, a few Canada Geese, and California Gulls.

After this long day out and then checking the upcoming weather forecast, yesterday, 20 March 2016, looked like it was going to be the only decent day of the coming week. So, my alarm clocks were all set ridiculously early, though I still left home a bit later than I had intended, and I took myself NW of the city again to see if I could see an owl. Just a handful of friends were there and we got a few moments of great views of one of the Great Grays. The rest of the time, I did see an owl fly off into the trees a couple of times, but the time was spent waiting and chatting with my friends. Patience .....
Sheep along side the GCR must be very used to passing trains as they didn't bat an eyelid as 80080 passed to the north of Quorn heading for Loughborough during a Timeline Events photo charter.
The Union Pacific local that works between Columbus and Grand Island passes an old elevator west of Silver Creek. I don't remember when this elevator was in operation, probably being worked by a local like this one, but I am old enough to remember when standard cab EMDs would've been the norm on the Overland Route, there was a center siding here, and the two mains were operated with directional running and ABS. It was nice to get at least a little glimpse of that past at the end of 2023.
Class 67 No. 67029 passes though Pandy as it heads towards Abergavenny, propelling the 14:30 (1V96) Manchester Piccadilly Cardiff Central TfW service.
GBRf 66752 'The Hoosier State' leads it's train through Wanborough on the Alton - Ardingly leg of the Alpine Sunbeam railtour with 73128 & 73136 on the rear.
LNER Gresley A3 pacific 60050 ''Persimmon'' near Potters Bar station, on a bright sunny day in 1960. The loco has a double-chimney, but has not yet been fitted with 'trough' smoke deflectors..
It was withdrawn in June 1963, and scrapped in August. Only one of the class was preserved..
Today (2018) the telegraph poles have vanished, and these lines are electrified..

37190 stands with the 0919 Fort William to Glasgow and awaits entry to the single line at Rannoch as 37085 & ETHEL approaches with the Euston to Fort William sleeper service on 1st March 1984.
This was a quick shot reeled off safe in the knowledge that we'd have plenty of time to get back on- all perfectly achievable before RETB and door locking!
Fortunately I managed at least one shot with the Rannoch semaphores in before the box closed with the advent of RETB signalling in May 1988.

We'd had 37090 overnight from Inverness on a cold 2350 Inverness to Glasgow for 37011 from Glasgow to Tulloch for 37190 back to Queen Street.
37011 was stored unserviceable in February 1987 after sustaining collision damage. It was withdrawn in August the same year and cut up in 1989 at Wellington.
Meanwhile 37190 was stored unserviceable in June 1992 and bought for preservation in 1994. It can be seen currently on the Midland Railway.
A fair amount of demolition is underway on the approaches to Leicester station as 45052 "NIMROD" heads past the locomotive depot with a service from Derby - St Pancras on 5th February 1988.

The Burke St Mall in Melbourne is alive with buskers of every shade of entertainment and of many ethnic communities from around the world. Some come to gaze, some to stare some might even come to marvel and are happy to give something in the hat for being amused, entertained for a couple of minutes.

Recorded at Penmaenmawr, Class 37/4 37414 'Cardiff Cathays C&W Works 1846-1993' had charge of the 13:22 Bangor to Crewe Regional Railways service.
