Title: May 2007 Photo of the Month: [Unknown Switchboard Operator]

Date: 1974

Place: North America: U.s.; Lisle, IL; Illinois Benedictine College

Type: 8x10 Photograph

Description: This photograph was taken in 1974, but the switchboard you see being used here was in service on the Benedictine campus until around 1980. It is a Bell System (probably in the Model 500 series), manufactured by Western Electric during the late 1940s. Although telephone companies stopped using systems like this long before 1980, this switchboard was the only method of routing calls in and out of campus during this time. If you’d like to see it up close, stop by the 4th floor of the Library—it currently resides in the Archives & Special Collections reading room.

Date: c. 1900

Description: In this photo, six women are seated at switchboards at a telephone exchange (likely the one previously located in the Whalen Building). Their boss Tom Delbridge, the Superintendent of Telephones, oversees their work from the far right.

Fifty years later, the majority of telephone operators in Northwestern Ontario were still women.

This early example of DAF's LF series was seen parked in Fenton Barns, East Lothian, Scotland, some three hundred miles from its original owner's premises. The smartly-painted LF once belonged to B. H. Cecil of Blakeney, Gloucestershire and at over twenty-two years old it now sits in a yard near the village of Drem, unused. At least, that's what the flat tyre and the tax expiration date of January 2023 suggest.

One of a few photos of Polish workers which I took while working as an interpreter in a factories in Goleniow and Jelenia Gora in Poland. Was really long time ago but I still really like this shot.

Sorry for dust & scratches but it was one of my first B&W films I developed myself and back then I didn't know how to handle the whole process well enough. Taken using old Practica camera.

A year ago I first visited the abandoned lime quarry at Cocking. Returning today I did a bit more investigating, starting with this one of 2 discarded Ruston-Bucyrus excavators in the quarry itself. I felt the same eerie sense of isolation as I did the first time, a feeling like your being watched.

"Corp. Jon Baber (Richmond, Virginia) mans the radio set linking his regimental headquarters with various units in the field and with higher commands at the rear. "Magic" was the code-name for his unit then (it has since been changed) and thus as Baber quickly and efficently handled the busy communications to and from various units and headquarters the incongruous sounding answer "Magic Operator" was frequently heard bringing a note of humour to the unpleasant duty of war." NEWPORT, RI – The U.S. Naval War College holds at graduation ceremony for students from the International Maritime Staff Operators Course (IMSOC) held at the Naval War College Museum onboard Naval Station Newport, June 2, 2023. IMSOC was jointly designed by the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) International Programs department and the College of Maritime Operational Warfare to teach international students the fundamental concepts and processes necessary to support a multinational maritime component commander at the operational level of warfare. Established in 1884, NWC informs today’s decision-makers and educates tomorrow’s leaders by providing educational experiences and learning opportunities that develop their ability to anticipate and prepare strategically for the future, strengthen the foundations of peace, and create a decisive warfighting advantage.
