This image was captured during my Palm Beach Photographic Workshops India workshop. with a Nikon D-200 camera modified for infrared. Enhanced color conversion done by LifePixel with a 24-120 mm VR II I lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 16 gigabyte UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software.

Black and White conversion was done in Photoshop CC using a combination of NiK Silverefex and the Versace multi channel mixer conversion technique. .

Final file is stored and scaled using Genuine Fractals.

This image is from my Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Cuba Workshop shot with the AMAZING Nikon D750 camera using the "the street sweeper" 28-300mm VR II Lens. We snuck up to the top floor of a very old building in the city centre. This was shot just beneath a 30 foot tall statue of the Greek God Hermes. Even the rain could not taint the view.

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the second day I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. Just waling the street in Santiago de Cuba. Not because it is the home of the greatest Rum in the world, which is nice, but because the the sweetest nicest people live there.

There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....

Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

And now back to my latest trip to Cuba….. A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject is not in motion, The mission should you decide to accept it is to stop motion with stillness. So what makes one 1/25 of a second more decisive than the other 124 parts of the the second? When dit that second actually begin? In actuality photographs are captured at the speed of life. Which is neither fast or slow it is exactly in the middle. It is half-fast. So I alway recommend that you be a half-fast photographer.

These images of the ballerina Kamila Quinones Ruiz were shot at 1/4000 of a second at 2000iso using the electronic shutter feature with the 135mm Plena. The reason for these choices is that the electronic shutter is soundless, so the subject is unaware that an image is being captured and what I get is the absolute spontaneous response, 1/4000 of second afforded me the ability to record the moment from eyes closed to open and capture the lack of registration that I was pointing a camera at my subject. The Plena was chosen because of the way the lens handles tack sharp at f1.8 to smooth and creamy Bokeh. 2000iso is what allowed 1/4000 of second to happen with the available light of the moment.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

I shot this image on my last day of my February 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba in Havana. (There are two spots left for my March 21-29 workshop. www.workshop.org/travel.php) I only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 24-120mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper) my go to lens with my go to camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This is an image of Diane Perrotta one of the producers of the tv show "Lip Sync Battle" shot with the Amazing Nikon D850, 105mm f1.4 lit by a lume cube with the small grid auto natural light portrait picture control.

Westscott 30" 6-in-1 reflector as a flag. To be exact I bounced a Lume cube into a Westcott slight reflector and then used a the black surface of the 30" 6-in01 to absorb some unwanted light.

The D850 is the most impressive camera on earth! The 105 is the prettiest lens I have ever shot

Raw processed in Studio NX, No color correction, nothing else. Picture Control is set to Standard. Some dust removal and specular highlight reduction in Photoshop using generative fill. No other adjustments to color, sharpness or contrast. This is a multiple focus point capture of eight images PS images with 105mm MC. The final Pixel Shite images is 46.75 inches by 30.972 inches at 360 ppi.

To put this into perspective the file is 2 inches bigger than my biggest printer (Epson 9575) can print coming out of a Z8.

This image is of the Chef Eric Ripert at his restaurant "Blue" att the Ritz Carlton on Grand Cayman island. I had been invited to speak at the Grand Cayman International Festival (Cayfilm). Chef Ripert prepared a mel on the last night for presenters and other celebrities that had flown in for the event. As the sun was setting, about an hour before the guests were to arrive, the light streamed into his empt soon to be completely full restaurant. I asked hi m to sit, he mentioned he was about to be a little busy.. I said but he light is beautiful, he smiled, sat I took this image and then off we went o kitchen.

This image was captured with a D500, 105mm f1.4 nano coated lens. Captured to a 128 Lexar 2933x XQD card. Lit with diffused sunlight through a window.

Image was post processed with Capture NXD, Photoshop CC 2017, Nik collection by Google and onOnesoftware.

CHROMATIC GRAYSCALE VERSION

Seventh post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country.

What I wanted to do was celebrate the shoot using the tech of today. Soooooo you will be seeing a lot of images from the shoot we did on the deck of my studio.

I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. We shot video during the shoot to discuss how to do

conversational portraiture using the D850.First post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country. I used Hive light led wasps lights with a leko lens an a fresnel. Sunbounce cage and Sunbounce reflectors.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " sectionThis is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

I am frequently asked "how do you get away with getting so close to people?" and "How do you get people to ope up to you? Do you speak the language?" My language skills are akin to someone saying they are a musician because the instrument they play is the stereo. I n other words I barely speak English. That said I do do speak fluent silly. The ability to play and the willingness to make a complete fool of myself in public has served my photography career well.

For every action there is a reaction... So this warrior gave me his best "death stare" and I lowered my camera and gave him my best "silly death stare" and he gave me his best impersonation of me impersonating him.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path. This a warrior form Kyal Yar village

From my latest trip to Cuba.... Man Smoking a Cuban Cigar in Cuba

I shot this with the Nikon Z7 and the 70-200mm f4 lens.

The Z system is simply best of class. The quality of the file and the perfection of the color coupled with the new lenses sharpness, just a joy to shoot. Enough with the commercial...

First time I was went Cuba I was asked on the street if I wanted to buy some cigars that "had fallen off the truck" so to speak. I asked (always looking for a deal) "how do I know they are actual Cuban cigars? (I have been burned in Miami....) the guy'd response "You are inCuba. ALL the cigars are Cuban."

I had a similar experience when I asked for a "Cuban" sandwich too

I try to create images that put the viewer in the same place the moment I was taken by the moment.

An interesting plainness, which is the most difficult thing to achieve.

Always take the picture that takes you. Alway have a camera near, you can’t take a picture without a camera. At best you can take a cyber chrome. An image only seen in your mind.

Light is the jewel of the photograph. Treat light as if it is a solid object, approach an image as if the subject is interrupting your beautiful light. Dark is aa important to an image as light.

AND an interesting plainest is the most difficult ting to achieve.

I shot this image at breakfast during my last workshop to Cuba.

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was. I shot these images with the new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm Plena lens just Whoa. Bokeh is my thing. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. I fell in love with it and kinda for got to switch lenses, it’s just that pretty and just that useful. The Zf is now the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

In absolute spontaneity you get absolute truth. You can only be one way when you are spontaneous and that is truthful. All of the light was ambient. My job, and I invite you to consider it to be yours as well, is to see all the "pretty" of the world and to tell the truth of the moment. Let the picture be the one that takes you, not you be the one that takes the picture.

This was captured in Havana during my Palm Beach Photographic Workshop. This image was captured by a Nikon D600camera. 28-300mm VR II lens in the Nikon Electronic Image File Formant (.NEF) Shot on Lexar 64 gigabyte Smart card. ISO is 1000. file was post processed using Capture NX-D Photoshop CC, Nik Color Efex 4.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Genuine Fractals.

The image was captured on my second day of my three day Varanasi workshop put on by the Indian talent pooling webiste tumbhi.com. We had just stepped of of the boat from our third river shoot. As we were walking back in to the city this woman took me.

This image was captured by a Nikon D-800 640iso with a 80-400mm nano coated VR II lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 128 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the week after my students went back to the US. This time I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. If Dominoes is the national pastime, boxing is the national religion of Cuba. (or drinking rum depends on who you ask.) I had the chance to spend a few hours in a local gym where several of the Cuban Olympic team train.

So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source. Now you know.

However......

There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....

I shot this series of images at breakfast on the last day of my cuba workshop. These images are of my good friend Dan Stienhardt. According to him he “Has a face made for radio.” Every picture tells a story but I found that every story has many more pictures. This sequence of images was shot between the first and second cups of coffee. (It is important to note that those in the know know that Cuban coffee is a godawful cup of Joe. I bring my own 50% Arabian Mocha Sanni/50% organic French roast from Peets (whole bean of course) , a grinder and a French press. Life is way to short to drink bad coffee. But I digress…..

Dano for as long as I have known him both does and does not take life too seriously. He may not know what he wants but he always knows what he does not want until he sees what he wants. He is also one of the funniest people I know. All I remember was that the light was really cool and when it registered to him I was actually taking pictures this is what I got.

Dano is a big part of the reason I have the career I have been blessed to have.

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was. I shot these image with the new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot using the BW mode. (The gesture was too strong with Dano for colour. I have included color version to prove my point) and the 50mm f1.2 lens. Bokeh is my thing. Another exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is the headshot of the actor Buck Kartalian. the buzz around town about a month after I hung up my shingle was there was this newly minted from USC, ACT conservatory trained actor who was doing "cinematic" headshots and knew how to work an actor. all because my uncle CJ had given me a camera and a lens as a graduation present and said " Stop bitching about waiting tables I tought you photography...go shoot actors"

So Buck and his wife stop over to ee my "book" which he never looked at. Picked up a stack of contact sheets look at them and said "when can you shoot me next?" So Buck, his wife and I spent all day taking pictures. Buck is the face of a thousand movies who's name you never know. He was in the Outlaw Josie Wales, The Planet of the Apes, Cool Hand Luke, the TV series Combat! and the list goes on and on and on. All he wanted to do is laugh. And his stories.... I had to remember to shoot I was so taken by his presence. The best moment was when we need to do a serious "dramatic" shot. I asked him to look at his wife and remember the first moment he saw her. HE too one look at her and started to cry.... She started to cry.... I started to cry... He said to her "Love you" she said "I know" he looked at me and that look took me to take the picture. We then all started laughing because we were all crying about a happy moment. If you want to know why I am reopening my studio in LA to actors. Is because I miss the serendipity of a moment like that.

I shot this with a Nikon 6006s a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

Ahhh sunsets…. Always the last shots of the day when your light source of choice is a thermonuclear device. I have a photography friend who is into deep sea fishing. He named his boat “On Location” so whenever his out going message says “I can’t take your call right now I’m on location” those in the know he’s gone fishing.

I love it when the universe conspires to let me see how beautiful simple is. Light is the jewel of every photograph. I love it when light conspires. This image was captured on a mostly cloudy day. We were inside an abandoned theater that had some serious holes in the roof. Lila was walking towards me as I was simply looking through the lens to get some idea as to framing. THe clouds broke, a gndbeam of light hit the roof of the theater and the light channeled through one of the holes in the roof just as Lila walked into it. I clicked the shutter because she took me.

Cannot say the enough- A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject of the picture is not in motion.

I shot this with the Nikon Z8 and the 135mm PLena f1.8 Nikkor S. Raw file processed in NX Studio NiK collection Silver Efex Pro v7 in Photoshop beta.

Fifth post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country.

I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. We shot video during the shoot to discuss how to do conversational portraiture using the D850.

I used Hive light led wasps lights with a leko lens an a fresnel. Sunbounce cage and Sunbounce reflectors.

Just like a fish does not know it lives in the water, the people of Cuba do not “know” they live in a mad mad mad world. At best it is a literary event that they get glimpses of from TV news out of Miami. There is a preservation of an innocence of the times of the past that you get to experience whilst you and your present find themselves in the bible of time present in Cuba.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains just the "Shoot"

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

When I was asked to shoot the lens I was told I could only have it for 16 days. On my travel schedule during that time fram that meant 11 actual days of being able to shoot. Five of those days were travel ays to get from here to there and back.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not inhaled by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of this brushes will be staying home.This lens has a permeant place in my camera bag.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. ALL of my images are post processed. So there is no issue I have added the non processed image here and removed the "FINAL." I have re-uploaded the FINAL version as well. Flickr does not allow for me to move them side by side.The FINAL was the image I put first up. As a matter of course I did remove blemishes and such for my web page and for my posting to my personal sites. This image of Elk in the woods was taken on day two of the "rising" before the "shine" at 3am to catch the light with my Palm beach Photographic Centre's workshop with the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody Wyoming. This image was shot after a the sun had been up for a few hours, we had been up a few hours longer, on the way to Yellowstone from Cody, the really, really long way.

Image wast taken with a D610 with a 28-300mm Nano coated VR lens recorded to a 128GB Lexar flash card used post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex 4.0, Induro C414 carbon fiber tripod and BH3 ball head

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

There is an Italian saying ‘at the dinner table none gets old’ wjhe you are listening music it is a banquet for the ears and a meal for the heart and soul.

This image is of Osmel Fernandez playing Clave and sing a smile in the key of joyious laughter.

This is my latest workshop to Cuba.. I shot this image withe new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 50mm f1.2 lens. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

I am so looking forward to going back to Cuba March 07-14 2024 for my Photography and Music workshop.

And now back to my latest trip to Cuba….. A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject is not in motion, The mission should you decide to accept it is to stop motion with stillness. So what makes one 1/25 of a second more decisive than the other 124 parts of the the second? When dit that second actually begin? In actuality photographs are captured at the speed of life. Which is neither fast or slow it is exactly in the middle. It is half-fast. So I alway recommend that you be a half-fast photographer.

These images of the ballerina Kamila Quinones Ruiz were shot at 1/4000 of a second at 2000iso using the electronic shutter feature with the 135mm Plena. The reason for these choices is that the electronic shutter is soundless, so the subject is unaware that an image is being captured and what I get is the absolute spontaneous response, 1/4000 of second afforded me the ability to record the moment from eyes closed to open and capture the lack of registration that I was pointing a camera at my subject. The Plena was chosen because of the way the lens handles tack sharp at f1.8 to smooth and creamy Bokeh. 2000iso is what allowed 1/4000 of second to happen with the available light of the moment.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

This image of "Dora the Explorer" was shot on my very first day in Cuba with the D600 just outside an old warehouse that housed the Sunday market. I shot this at 2000iso. I am still blown away that we expect this as an everyday thing that Nikon cameras just do. Not just the top of the line flagship D4s but the "pro-sumer' Advanced amateur cameras too. I took this camera with me because size and weight were issues. I could get away with 2.5 cameras. (The V1 is the .5) So I know I need high ISO and I know I want as big a file as I can get. But nothing says "HEY!!! I'M A PHOTOJOURNALIST PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER!" better than a D4. AND it is heavy. I am allowed 44 lbs. TOTAL weight, both for my carry on and checked bag. Traditionally my camera bag weighs 64 Lbs and my computer bag weighs in at 39 Lbs. So we know I will be wearing the same clothes and doing a lot of laundry at the hotel.

D800IR is going for sure. V1 is going for stealth capabilities. So that leaves which of the full spectrum cameras? Only one choice D600. 24mp 2000iso.

To put a finer point on this image and the others I have posted from Cuba there was no artificial light whatsoever used to capture them, (excuse me I mean Photo-Roto Photo-Rueter Photo_Realized.0 All of the light was ambient. It was also a very overcast day and threatening to rain. The use of strobes was completely out of the question. These images were about being captured by the moment as things unfold at the speed of life. Nothing puts an end to spontaneity quicker in moments like these than a high intensity short burst of very bright light in a really dark room. What is also lost is the beauty of the light. Besides I prefer to light using a thermonuclear device than something that is battery powered. I am a bit butch when it comes to how I light I guess....

This image was captured by a Nikon D600camera. 28-300 coated VR II lens in the Nikon Electronic Image File Formant (.NEF) Shot on Lexar 64 gigabyte Smart card. ISO is 4000. file was post processed using Capture NX2 Photoshop CS6, Nik Color Efex 4.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

There are no mistakes. Just creative events. Dance is the poetry of motion and gesture are the words used to flow the poem. Dance is the the movement of moments in which there is no single moment just the flow without conscious thought.

Sometimes color can get in the way of gesture. So then the abstraction removes the distraction. Bring the image back to flow.

I shot this with the Nikon Z8 and the 85mm f1.2 Nikkor S. Raw file processed in NX Studio NiK collection Silver Efex Pro v7 in Photoshop beta.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 24-120mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with the 80-400mm because I loaned my Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper) to give it a test run.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.
