One of the core concepts of improvisational acting is the above quote. I studied acting for 17 years in undergraduate as well as graduate school.

Another core concept, this time from Tad Z. Dainelewski is the concept of hiding in the audience. When you are filming, be it still or motion, someone you want to create an environment in which the subject show the camera the someone they hide from the world.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

This is an image ofstraberries and blueberries that I purchased at the Portreo Hill Farmer's market in San Francisco.

The light source was sunlight coming through the windows a friend's 30,000 sq ft warehouse in SF.

All I can say is thank God for Nikon's amazing focusing speed on the D5 as well as group focus feature! And thank God for 12 fps and a 200 shoot buffer when shooting RAW in frame waster mode. Talk about being taken by your subject to take a photograph. I truly just held on and was pulled through the camera!

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of these brushes will be staying home.This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

this image is of the actress Charlotte Taschen. The first "official" headshot done at my LA headshots studio (still under construction. Plan is to be done sometime in August) This image was captured with a D500, 18-300mm "DX Street Sweeper" nano coated lens. (Gotta say what a imaging combo the D500 and the 18-300mm make!) Captured to a 128 Lexar 2933x XQD card. Lit with Westcott highlighter reflector and diffused sunlight.

I won my Smitsonian Award for the photographic work I did (back in the day....) with actors. Sooting headshots has been one of my great photographic loves. I have missed it over the years. So I have decided to come full circle and go back to my great love...

Of the greatest lessons I learned studying with the master acting teacher Tad Z. Danielewski was the concept of hiding in the audience. In photography, be it still or motion, the audience is in the camera. Another important life changing lesson was Viola Spolin’s concept of “the space between.” Things happen in the space between actors or in this case the photographer and the subject. If you can slow yourself down to the speed of life and insert a camera in that space you open yourself up to receive the gift of seeing the person that is hidden in plain sight by allowing it to show up in the camera.

Captured with a Z9 for modified infrared. I did a full spectrum conversion and then am using the bayonet filters from Kolarivision. Which means I can have my cake and eat it too. The first element of the lens dictates everything that is going to happen from the quality of the light and resolution of that light. So putting the IR filter at the end of the light path is far better than putting a filter in front of the lens. a full spectrum conversion allows me to bring my camera back to visible spectrum with a different filter as well as having every flavor of IR.

More from the archives....As I work on my FOTOmentor award show "Post Cards From the Vaction that is my Life" I get to relive the best moments. This image of a blue Agave that I would see four or five times a day as I walked by it by my very first LA studio. I shot this with a prototype Nikon D1 and a 70-210mm D series lens back in the day. This was one of the test files used during the beta testing of Nikon Capture software to post process .NEF files. Keep in mind this is from in 1998.

When was a very young boy my father and I would go to Little Italy (now referred to as REALLY little Itay) in NYC and by cheeses, salami, mortadella etc. a loaf a bread and White Rock Cream Sodas and have a picnic lunch in the park. This is one of the views I remember from one of the "secret" uich spots.

This image was capture using Kolari Vision's new in batonet mount filter system for IR. This is the 720mn filter. I have to say I am more than impressed

I have been some remote placeless but.......

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival. This image was captured at the main festival. Burmise children just melt my heart.

The Moment I opened the window of my room and looked to the right.

This is the first "official" vinniev image of the Nebelung Fur Gremlin , Valentino J. Cat. He is moments away from pouncing on the other Nebelung Fur Gremlin , Gianni J. Cat who is preoccupied chasing a piece of plastic wrap from a gadget I just received from Amazon. The secret to photographic the Nebelung fur gremlin in the wild is to do it whilst they are preoccupied in the constant game of chase the imaginary moving invisible thing that only they can see or during a a game of "death from above or behind or from a hidden spot" with the other fur gremlin.

Here is another image from the archive and one of my all time favorite images. as I work on my FOTOmentor award show. The was shot with a D300 as part of the release campaign advatorial. I was in Vietnam again during Monsoon season. A rainstorm of biblical proportion had decided it was time. I ran into a tea and snacks shop to get out of the rain. Camera was on the tripod so I decided to play with the "new" features. Which for me was live view. Set the camera up. and magic happened. The two kids had no idea I was actually taking a picture. I was allowed to watch the moment before the the straw was fired....

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I shot this image 4;30am Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is the image in color.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

To hard fast beliefs I have first don't take pictures be taken by your pictures and second an interesting plains is the mot difficult thing to achieve. I suppose I registered somewhere that the car was color coordinated to the building. I frequently do not realize what I have actually shot until I am sitting in front of the monitor in the studio. I feel like I have a hand on my back gently pushing forward when I shoot.

This image was taken on day one of the "rising" before the "shine" at 3am to catch the light with my Palm beach Photographic Centre's workshop with the Buffalo Bill Center in Cody Wyoming.... This is the image before the previous "rainbow" shot. The Rainbow was to my back. The thing to remember always look both ways. This image was shot on June 21st, the longest day of the year and that far north Sunrise comes really early.

Image wast taken with a D610 with a 24-120mm Nano coated VR lens recorded to a 128GB Lexar flash card used post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex 4.0, Induro C414 carbon fiber tripod and BH3 ball head

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

As melancholy as witnessing those moments there is a poetry to it for those who catch a glimpse of them. Just like a fish does not know he is in the ocean he also does not see the outcome of the overwhelming sound of silence in the ocean of noise.

I shot this during the Presidio Project with a prototype Nikon D1x and a protype 80-400mm Nikkor lens. The were tearing down an old warehouse to put up some modern marvel that most likely looks like the inside of an old washing machine. It was the time of the dot com KAAABOOM right after the Dot com boom. I was commissioned by th rPresidio Trust to photograph the recently decommissioned San Francisco Presidio. The oldest military base in history. It was commissioned in 1776. I had just finished two gigs one as the Artist in Residence at Altamira Group (the inventors of Genuine Fractals, I was employee number 6) and the other ads the Advisor to the President of Kodak on digital imaging. I was hired by NiK Software (employee number 2) to be the test pilot for their soon to be released version 1 of the software. I was blessed to be offered the chance to photograph a recently minted national recreation area/park (the Presidio). What a far cry living a 1440 acre park in the middle of San Francisco. My studio was still up and running in Los Angeles and I was all over the place. But back to this image I had a two seater convertible at the time and as I was driving back to my house in the Presidio to beat the rain I ran over a nail and got a flat in from t of the image you see here. I shot this whilst waiting for AAA and in the rain. I came back two days later when there was sun (a rare area in SF) and there was no wall left.

This from my most recent trip to Myanmar.

Two hard fast beliefs I have first don't take pictures be taken by your pictures and second an interesting plains is the most difficult thing to achieve. I love images where I a m captured bt a moment in which the subject of my image chooses to hide in my camera. I love images where I capture the space between moments. I basically fall in love about a 1000 times a day. usually for about a 125th of a sec. I really don't believe in long relationships or long exposures.

Once a day at 4:30pm the gates are opened to a small lake and the people from the surrounding area are allowed to gather water. At 5:30pm the gates are closed. he belief being that this lake has the best tasting water. No-one fights, no on cuts in line, no one sneaks in durning the day or at night. I just can't see that happening in my neighborhood of Silverlake.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. According to Jay Maisel light, gesture and color are three of the four key elements of any image. I shot this image just after sunrise in Kengtung village market. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is the image in Chromatic Grayscale.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " section

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path. This is the warrior Ko Khar Nuu ( San Pya village)

This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the 50mm f/1.2 Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

I am in Cuba (again) this time with the Nikon D5.

i call tis image "Yellow" I shot it from a moving car as my car was excelrating and passing it.

So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source and why I am in love with the D5 now you know.

There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. To stop a speeding car with a single click while moving in a mother speeding car..... Whoa..... Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

I shot 27525 captures. That is after pitching the Beverly out of focus ones and the ones where the camera decided to take a picture whilst I was walking.

I chose this one because I have been repeatedly been asked “how how close did you get?”

This close. About 12 feet. This is at 260mm on the 100-400mm S Nikkor. If I got any closer I would not become poetry, I’d be lunch.

The system in which I came up with to not have to bring a laptop and be able to back all my images up with my ipad. Worked swimmingly. I shot on Delkin black 850 & 150gb cards. Which is the key to all of this fast read and fast downloads. I brought three 4tb Sandisk Blade drives. I used the Lexar WorkflowGo2. I was very hesitant to buy anything Lexar. I have had less than stellar luck with their cards. That said the workflowGo did the job.

This is one of a bazillion Lion captures I have. I have images of Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Caracals, Elephants, Hippos, Rhinos, Water Buffalo, Wildebeests, two types of Baboons, two types of Zebra, Brown Hyenas, Wild Dogs, Warthogs, Oryx, Mongoose, Read Heart beast, Springbok, Sable, Eland, Black Faced Impala, Impala, Crocodiles, Kudo, Waterbuck, Dik-Dik (so I did take Dik-Dik pics), Steenbok,Scrub Hare, Rock Hyrax, Side Winder snakes, African Ground Squirrels, Cape Penguin and so many birds I can’t even begin to name them and those are just the animals I can remember.

AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting and post processing my images.

With that said-

One of the core tenants of my work is this: Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect.You have to practice of practicing. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing.

The ultimate pursuit is the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought. Practice like you have never won and preform like you have never lost. Mastery is the variation of repetition over time.

I was taken by this image, as is true with all my images, as I was walking to a a performance rehearsal of the next ballet to be staged by the National Cuban Ballet. I this this empty practice room the space was filled with the ballerina. Her focus was so strong I felt it as I walked by and had to step back and let her take me to where she was.

Every issue of an image needs to be solved at moment of capture. I realized that the image of her needed to be in a space big enough to show how she filed it. So I took a second shot that showed the the left side of the rehearsal room. I don’t believe in cropping images. I shoot 99% of my images full frame.

I shot this image of the Shwedagon Pagoda, in Yangon Myanmar, at sunset with a D600 and the 28-300mm lens. It was the first day in Yangon on a workshop I was asked to lead for the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. This was the 141st image from the camera that I had literally received the day before I left for Myanmar. This was the camera that I discovered that from this point forward auto ISO was the wa yto go with street photography. This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

I always get asked these four questions: Do you see in black and white, can you teach me how to see in black and white, how do you know when an image is supposed to be a black and white and how come your blacks and white images look better than my black and white images.

Then I heard and read a lot of noise about how it’s all about contrast, contrast light and dark and contrast. Or basically the person positing and exposing these thoughts does not really have a clue.

In the film days when you put black and white film in the camera you saw the image in color and the film recorded it in grayscale base off a specific tonal production curve unique to the flavor of film that was in the camera. SO every image was black and white.

So what makes an image a successful black and white? It comes down to the three core elements (according to Jay Maisel or the four key elements according to me, because I cannot leave well enough alone), Light, Gesture and Color (Jay’s) and time (mine). According to Jay Light and Color are obvious but it is Gesture that is the most important, Gesture that is the most telling.

SO the equation for when an image wants/needs to become a black and white is when the color of the image distracts from the gesture of the image.

For example this image, the colors a lovely, but the truly distract from the gesture of the dancers which is beautiful and timeless.

The point? I have never met an image did not know or tell me that it was wanting to be a black and white image. The gesture of the image will always let you know. As to the rest of it being light a nd dark and contrast contrast and more contrast? That really is the after thought and holds true for both color and black and white.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

What I love about photography the most is that even though we are all, as Einstein posited, inertial observers of any given moment and depending on where we are standing when we view the “moment” we all see it differently. With a photograph no matter where we are initially observing the image we all see the frozen moment exactly the same way.

For me the best photographs are the ones that feel as if we are in the space between a moment. Traveling to next but not there yet. Leaving the moment we were in yet not completely gone from it.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 28-300mm "street sweeper" lens. To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Shot with Nikon D7200 an 28-300mm lens. Miniature Effect mode. Lit with scrap material (diffuser and diffuser support) from making portfolios at Pina Zangaro. Light from a window 20 feet up the front facing wall and shining all the way to the back of the 15,00 sq ft. warehouse. Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Effects Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar.

I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

I shot this the day before in Yangon at a local market.

I shot this image of the Golden Gate Bridge during one of my "Answering the Call of the Fog" treks to the city by the bay. Once you have fog running in your veins you truly do leave your heart there and you just visit it from time to time. When ever I go home I make it a point to shoot the GGB. Been doing this for more years than I can care to admit to. The lesson I have learned from this life long exercise is that there is always a new and different way to see the same thing.

AI shot this image of the Chrysler Building whilst speaking at Optix. When my father was alive everytime I went to NYC I would try and capture images that were the places he would tell me about his growing up in New York. Finding the past that isstill present today.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting and post processing my images.

With that said-

One of the core tenants of my work is this: Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect.You have to practice of practicing. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing.

The ultimate pursuit is the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought. Practice like you have never won and preform like you have never lost. Mastery is the variation of repetition over time.

I was taken by this image, as is true with all my images, as I was walking to a a performance rehearsal of the next ballet to be staged by the National Cuban Ballet. I this this empty practice room the space was filled with the ballerina. Her focus was so strong I felt it as I walked by and had to step back and let her take me to where she was.

Every issue of an image needs to be solved at moment of capture. I realized that the image of her needed to be in a space big enough to show how she filed it. So I took a second shot that showed the the left side of the rehearsal room. I don’t believe in cropping images. I shoot 99% of my images full frame.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. 1/1250 of a second ISO 1800. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

Soooooo I said to myself “Self let’s do a Night sky infrared” nobody told me I couldn’t.

I shot the first image, the image of the sand dune with the Z8 modified for full spectrum by Kolarivision with the 590nm magnetic filter. 24-120mm S Nikkor lens and the second shot of the Milky Way with a 50mm f 1.2 S Nikkor. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.
