This image was shot in Havana. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 24-120mm and my modified D800 infrared camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the second day I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. Just waling the street in Santiago de Cuba. Not because it is the home of the greatest Rum in the world, which is nice, but because the the sweetest nicest people live there.

There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....

Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is another of the collage artist Hope Kroll. I believe this was the only time in her youth she formally sat for someone, I was honor then as I am honored today.

I shot this with a Nikon F5 a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

A picture is the expression of an impression. If the beautiful were not in us, how would we ever recognize it? —Ernst Haas

For me the pretty is always in the blur. All lenses focus. That’s what they do. But how a lens handles from in focus to blur, the bokeh, that is what makes a lens special. I Believe that the lens is the brush and the camera sensor is the canvas. I choose my lenses based on the image I want to paint.

I love doing abstracts of things we see everyday but just walk by. I love playing with those objects as geometric shapes that I further explore focus and blur, light and dark sharpness and softness which is different from focus and blur).

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was. I shot these images with the new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 50mm f1.2 lens just Whoa. Bokeh is my thing. The 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.2 and the 135mm f1.8 Plena are exquisitely beautify pieces of glass to work with.. The Zf is now the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

There are no mistakes. Just creative events. Dance is the poetry of motion and gesture are the words used to flow the poem. Dance is the the movement of moments in which there is no single moment just the flow without conscious thought.

Sometimes color can get in the way of gesture. So then the abstraction removes the distraction. Bring the image back to flow.

I shot this with the Nikon Z8 and the 85mm f1.2 Nikkor S. Raw file processed in NX Studio NiK collection Silver Efex Pro v7 in Photoshop beta.

This image is of MC3 Jake Cannaday , USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) from my "week at sea" teaching on the USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70). The camera: the unbelievable Nikon D850, The lens: the utterly beautiful 105mm f1.4 nikkor. The light: one Lume Cube bounced off a white of paper one Lume cube place behind the dysub printer in the background. AND it was shot at 2000iso form a 45.5mp sensor!

The lesson was about treating light like a solid object and approaching lighting this way: The subject interrupts the light, instead of lighting the subject.

This is an image from the most recent Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Black and White Master printing workshop, In this workshop we build a "chromatic Grayscale" from capture to conversion to print. This image is of the lovely Amy Forman. Here are bothe the befor and after conversion images.

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 105mm f1.4

There are two aspects to every image, "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light on the subjects, all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. The light is window ligh and a FJ Westcott 30" sunlight reflector was used for fill.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

According to Jay Maisel there are three main elements to every photograph: light, gesture and color. Light and color are obvious but it is gesture that is the most important. There is gesture in everything and it is the photographer's job to find the gesture that is most telling. Because I cannot seem to leave well enough alone believe that there are four main elements: light, gesture, color and time. For me the most successful images are the ones where you can see/feel the movement of time, that the moment between is captured.

Black and White conversion was done in Photoshop CS5 using NiK Silverefex 2.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize AKA Genuine Fractals.

CUBA_This is an image I recently shot of the actor Bruce Gray. Bruce was the very first "real deal" actor I did head shots for back in the day. I mean Bruce is a movie star.... I was fresh out of USC and just hung up my shingle. After I gave bruce my sing and dance about "how to create emotionally based headshots" etc. he gave me a look like "really kid? You gotta be kidding. I've been doing this since Christ was a corporal" I said to him, scared sh*tless of the guy, "just let me have control of your instrument for round" ("instrument"is how you refer to an actor in an acting situation) so he said "okay" and just like that he had me over the keys and was let me drive. What a ride! What is even better is that we became friends.

One of the things I got to do whilst I was in Havana was sit in the Orchestra pit while the Cuban National Symphony played at the Newly renovated Opera house in Havana. This is conductor... well...conducting.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

this is from the very first shoot on the very first day I was blessed to have this lens. Because God knows I like a challenge...... Let's shoot with a prototype lens that you have never ever shot with, hand held, an choose as your first subject an extremely happy baby, right after a nap with an extremely shallow depth of field! All I can say is thank God for Nikon's amazing 3D follow focus with face recognition And thank God for 12 fps and a 200 shoot buffer when shooting RAW in frame waster mode. Talk about being taken by your subject to take a photograph. I truly just held on and was pulled through the camera!

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of this brushes will be staying home.This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds. They are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue I have re-added my "FINAL" version. To MY personal sites. I think the issue really is you don't like my editing. OK. No offense but I do. I sign my name to everything I do. First and last.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, I always list the software and hardware.

From my latest trip to Cuba…..

I love ballet. When was in undergraduate & graduate school I did bleat or or some form of movement class 3 hours day. I was never ver technically good at it, but if passion was the driver then I was….. ‘noun sad. I love ballet. What is truly amazing to me is the absolute without any thought of it technical perfection of the pirouette from the “are you ready?” look to “you better be ready because here I go” look to the blissed out smile mid twirl to the end landing walking away with “attitude”

Cuban Ballet dancers are the bees knees of perfection.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 50mm f1.2 lensa. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

From one of my old working headshot portfolios from way back in the day when there was some art involved vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo and a yearbook picture. This is one of the "commercial" headshots of the actress Nancy Sullivan. If it were not for a 160.00 loan to buy a reflector, reflector holder and a nightstand I would have never started taking headshots.

I shot this with a Nikon F5 a Nikkor 70-200mm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso

COLOR VERSION

Fourth post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country.

What I wanted to do was celebrate the shoot using the tech of today. Soooooo you will be seeing a lot of images from the shoot we did on the deck of my studio.

I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. We shot video during the shoot to discuss how to do

conversational portraiture using the D850.First post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country. I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. I used Hive light led wasps lights with a leko lens an a fresnel. Sunbounce cage and Sunbounce reflectors.

I shot this image today in Cozumel on my Vanelli&Friends cruise as the guest instructor. I captured this with the D7200 and my go to lens the 28-300mm AKA "The Street Sweeper" lens. Just walking down the streets you are always blessed to find a moment to capture at the speed of life. I am impressed with the speed of the this camera's frame rate and the weight. Not to mention the quality of the image.

I captured this image on my first morning in Mumbai during the Ganesha Festival. my way to my three day Varanasi workshop sponsored www.tumbhi.com.I . I turned and this woman looked straight down the barrel of my lens, then cracked herself up when she saw me being startled at her face suddenly "appearing" in my camera.

I shot this image on my fourth day of my February 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba. This image was shot in Trinidad. (There are two spots left for my March 21-29 workshop. www.workshop.org/travel.php) I only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 24-120mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper) my go to lens with my goto camera.

I have a very good friend, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer who was a member of Combat camera, Mickey Strand, he would teach his sailors about the need to do "picture stories" it is a habit of his I have picked up. This is a "picture story" of a boy and his ballon.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 105mm f 1,4 lens. To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. This image was shot in Havana. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with my Nikkor 24-120mm and my modified D800 infrared camera.

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

I shot this image during my March 2015 Palm Beach Photographic Workshop to Cuba. This image was shot in Havana. Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The cameras the amazing Nikon D750 and and a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared.

The Lenses were the equally amazing and versatile Nikkor 28-300mm (AKA "the Street sweeper), Nikkor 80-400mm Nano and the Nikkor 80-400mm Nano coated lenses.

This image was captured with the "street-sweeper" Nikkor 28-300mm and my D750 camera. Set on Auto ISO

Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

This image was captured with a Nikon D-200 camera modified for infrared. Enhanced color conversion d with a 28-300 mm VR II I lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software.

Black and White conversion was done in Photoshop CS using a combination of NiK Silverefex and the Versace multi channel mixer conversion technique.

This is shot was at dawn about 10 miles outside Havana. It was like stepping into a time machine and arriving in 1959The image was captured by a Nikon D-800 camera modified for infrared. Super Enhanced color conversion done by LifePixel with a 28-300 mm VR II lens

using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 32 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is the headshot of the actor Michael Pappajohn. Michael had a set of false character test form a movie he did and he developed a character named "Eddy" he was a good ol' boy who owned a gas station.... I had also just purchased a 14mm nikki lens. Sooo I thought it a good idea to take it out for a test drive.

I give you "Eddy"

I shot this with a Nikon F5 Nikkor 14mm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200isoScanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.
