Light is the jewel of the photograph and the subject should be approached as if it is interrupting the beautiful light. Light should be thought of and approached as it is aas tangible a thing as the subject itself. But dark us just as important to an image as light and should be treated with the same care and respect as one treats light.

I love photographing Cuba. I love the physicality of the their expression. This image is of the balirino Marco Hinder Vincent. Light moves an inch every two minutes and this is the light reflecting off a 4th floor balcony glass French door that moments later the dweller of the apartment closed. Ya take what ya get and are thankful of the gift.

This is the second image from my latest trip to Cuba. WHAT A BLAST that was. I shot this image withe new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 Plena lens. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot.

This is of the one of my favorite people to photograph the actress Spnya Maddox-Upchurch. Sonya was/is also an extrodinay make-up stylist. Back in the day she did the make-up for many of the actresses I shot during my career.

I shot this with a Nikon N90s a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

The national sport of Cuba is Dominos. They have an Olympic team. Just because no other counter has one falls under the category of “AND your point is….” For Cubans. Ask a Cuban if dominos is a board game the response is an indignant “there is nothing boring about dominos.”

I am not by proclivity an early riser. When I was in art school I frequently was head off to bed when others were getting up to go to work. That said when I am “on the job” and in the “hairball” of photographing, I am like dark. Which is always there to see the light arrive.

I was captured by this walking to coffee in Trinidad. Cuba is great for many things and coffee is not one of them.

I use primarily when I do street photography either the 28-300mm Nikkor lens when I shot DSLR and the 24-200mm Z series for mirrorless shooting. The is is simply this: I have found that I am always walking into a moment unfolding that is farther away than a nifty fifty or a 32mm is all ya’ need lens is good for. I never crop an image all of my images are full frame.

So having reach and pulling focus in as I move toward the moment increases the quality and quality of the “take”. Simple as that.

I love photographing the part of the spirit that people hide that they let be seen when they think no one is looking. the moment of a breath held expectant.

From the Hope Kroll shoot. I believe that Moses was still a corporal when this was shot. .

Westcott Skylight reflector and the sun as the light source. The Camera Nikon F5. Lens 70-210mm D series push/pull Nikkor zoom. Ilford HP5+ (iso 400 camera set to 200iso) Pull processed in a D-76 tank replenished development system (specifically the 4:30pm Thursday run). Image printed on Agfa Portriga in a two step development (Dr. Beer's No.7 formulation) Bessler 210 4x5 enlarger, Nikkor enlargement lens, cold light head. Print was selenium toned 15 to one dilution for 15 minutes. Scanned with an Epson V750 scanner using Lasersoft's Silverfast scanning software.

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

My grandfather Pasquale use to quip that all you ever need to to to shut up an Italian was to make them sit on their hands. Hands are as communicative, sometimes even more than, the expression on the face of the subject of a portrait. I am completely captivated by hands.

One thing to keep in mind is I never pose any of my subjects. Be it in the studio or when I am doing street photography. All my images are “found” of the moment and absolutely spontaneous.

I am not sure which I prefer the color or the black and white. But this hand truly do tell a story of a life.

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was. I shot these images with the new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm Plena lens just Whoa. Bokeh is my thing. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. I fell in love with it and kinda for got to switch lenses, it’s just that pretty and just that useful. The Zf is now the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

Enhanced color conversion done by LifePixel with a 28-300 mm VR II I lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 16 gigabyte UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software.

Black and White conversion was done in Photoshop CS5 using a combination of NiK Silverefex and the Versace multi channel mixer conversion technique. .

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is the headshot of the actor Greg Lauren. Another blast fun day shooting. He is also an amazing charcoal artist. his drawing are breathtaking.

I shot this with a Nikon N90s a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. I reshot the negative with a bellows and the D810 and Silverfast software.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was the "street sweeper" 28-300mm Nikkor.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

This is an image of a little girl that is laughing at my impersonation of a chicken taking a photograph.

The light source was ambient sunlight, the subject was under a tree in the shade.

All I can say is thank God for Nikon's amazing focusing speed on the D5 as well as group focus feature! And thank God for 12 fps and a 200 shoot buffer when shooting RAW in frame waster mode. Talk about being taken by your subject to take a photograph. I truly just held on and was pulled through the camera!

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available." Works for me

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5/D500- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This time I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5. I am being told about the wonderfully powerful holistic herbal blends he makes. I guess he doesn't have holistic dental floss. Lighting was that light that decided to join us for the shoot

So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source. Now you know.

However...... There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa..... Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

First post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country. I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. I used Hive light led wasps lights with a leko lens an a fresnel. Sunbounce cage and Sunbounce reflectors.

I shot this image after having traveled on the worst road ever on the entire planet. To say this was a terrible road was to give bad roads a bad name. We were on this road for 8 and a half hours. We were on our way to the Chin state located in the Himalaya mountain range. This young girl was sitting on the steps of her home watching us as we scraped ourselves out of the car.

The image was captured by a Nikon D-800 camera modified for infrared. Super Enhanced color conversion 70-200 mm Nano coated VR II lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) ile was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Photoshop CS, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0.

This image was shot on my very first day in Cuba ever with the D600 inside an old warehouse that housed the Sunday market. I shot this at 4000iso. I am still blown away that we expect this as an everyday thing that Nikon cameras just do. Not just the top of the line flagship D4 but the "pro-sumer' Advanced amateur cameras too. I took this camera with me because size and weight were issues. I could get away with 2.5 cameras. (The V1 is the .5) So I know I need high ISO and I know I want as big a file as I can get. D800 is out, 800iso is as high as I want to go, D4 can go so high on ISO that all you need do is wish that there was light. But nothing says "HEY!!! I'M A PHOTOJOURNALIST PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER!" better than a D4. AND it is heavy. I am allowed 44 lbs. TOTAL weight, both for my carry on and checked bag. Traditionally my camera bag weighs 64 Lbs and my computer bag weighs in at 39 Lbs. So we know I will be wearing the same clothes and doing a lot of laundry at the hotel.

D800IR is going for sure. V1 is going for stealth capabilities. So that leaves which of the full spectrum cameras? Only one choice D600. 24mp 4000iso.

To put a finer point on this image and the others I will be posting here, there was no artificial light whatsoever in this space. All of the light was ambient. It was also a very overcast day and threatening to rain. The use of strobes was completely out of the question. These images were about being captured by the moment as things unfold at the speed of life. Nothing puts an end to spontaneity quicker in moments like these than a high intensity short burst of very bright light in a really dark room. What is also lost is the beauty of the light. Besides I prefer to light using a thermonuclear device than something that is battery powered. I am a bit butch when it comes to how I light I guess....

This image was captured by a Nikon D600camera. 28-300mm VR II lens in the Nikon Electronic Image File Formant (.NEF) ISO is 4000. file was post processed using Capture NX2 Photoshop CS6, Nik Color Efex 4.0.

Final file is stored and scaled using Genuine Fractals.

Black and White conversion was done in Photoshop CS5 using a combination of NiK Silverefex and the Versace multi channel mixer conversion technique. .

Final file is stored and scaled using Genuine Fractals.

This image is of Eleanor Vara, MCSR USN USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) from my "week at sea" teaching on the USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70). The camera: the unbelievable Nikon D850, The lens: the utterly beautiful 105mm f1.4 nikkor. The light: one Lume Cube bounced of a white three ring binder. Oh yeah...2000iso from a 45.5mp camera!

The lesson was about treating light like a solid object and approaching lighting this way: The subject interrupts the light, instead of lighting the subject.

I love ballet. When was in undergraduate & graduate school I did bleat or or some form of movement class 3 hours day. I was never ver technically good at it, but if passion was the driver then I was….. ‘noun sad. I love ballet. What is truly amazing to me is the absolute without any thought of it technical perfection of the pirouette from the “are you ready?” look to “you better be ready because here I go” look to the blissed out smile mid twirl to the end landing walking away with “attitude”

Cuban Ballet dancers are the bees knees of perfection.

The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 50mm f1.2 lensa. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is another of the collage artist Hope Kroll. I believe this was the only time in her youth she formally sat for someone, I was honor then as I am honored today.

I shot this with a Nikon F5 a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

This image was taken during my First trip to Burrma. was captured with a modified D70 using the standard IR filter conversion. Post processing was done in CaptureNX, Photoshop and Nik Silver Efex.

his is another image that was shot whilst walking in a village about two hours from Varanasi just outside of the Meerzapur village the day after my three day Tumbhi.com workshop. This is the visible spectrum image of the little girl in the alleyway.

This image was captured by a Nikon D-800 at 640iso with a 28-300mm VR II lens using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 128 gigabyte Compact Flash 1000x media.The file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Photoshop CC Nik Color Efex 4.0

For me the pretty is always in the blur. All lenses focus. That’s what they do. But how a lens handles from in focus to blur, the bokeh, that is what makes a lens special. I Believe that the lens is the brush and the camera sensor is the canvas. I choose my lenses based on the image I want to paint.

I love doing abstracts of things we see everyday but just walk by. I love playing with those objects as geometric shapes that I further explore focus and blur, light and dark sharpness and softness which is different from focus and blur).

WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was. I shot these images with the new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 50mm f1.2 lens just Whoa. Bokeh is my thing. The 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.2 and the 135mm f1.8 Plena are exquisitely beautify pieces of glass to work with.. The Zf is now the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does.

using the Nikon electronic file format (.Nef) Shot on Lexar 32 gigabyte 1000 speed UDMA Flash media. file was post processed using capture NX 2.0 software, Nik Color Efex 4.0 and Silver Efex Pro 2.0

Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

This is an image I took of Marcia Cross.

I have been cleaning out my long term storage facility, the place where I keep all my old negs and chromes. This is one from the big ass box of slides I hauled to the studio. This image was originally shot on Fuji Film, Nikon F5 70-210mm D Series lens. Lit with a Westcott​ Sunlight reflector (my light modifier of choice), I also found my old Nikon PB-6 Bellows (i was going to play with it for Marco and I still had the slide copier. So I attached a Nikon D810, a Nikkor 60mm Nano Macro lens to itand use my new Westcott daylight balanced flex light. If I ever had any thoughts about ever going back to film they relegated to the "YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING RIGHT?!?!" file in my brain.
