I like to quote myself frequently and often, it makes me sound much more intelligent than I actually am.
— George Bernard Shaw
And now back to my latest trip to Cuba….. A still photograph is called a still photograph because the picture does not move. Not because the subject is not in motion, The mission should you decide to accept it is to stop motion with stillness. So what makes one 1/25 of a second more decisive than the other 124 parts of the the second? When dit that second actually begin? In actuality photographs are captured at the speed of life. Which is neither fast or slow it is exactly in the middle. It is half-fast. So I alway recommend that you be a half-fast photographer.
These images of the ballerina Kamila Quinones Ruiz were shot at 1/4000 of a second at 2000iso using the electronic shutter feature with the 135mm Plena. The reason for these choices is that the electronic shutter is soundless, so the subject is unaware that an image is being captured and what I get is the absolute spontaneous response, 1/4000 of second afforded me the ability to record the moment from eyes closed to open and capture the lack of registration that I was pointing a camera at my subject. The Plena was chosen because of the way the lens handles tack sharp at f1.8 to smooth and creamy Bokeh. 2000iso is what allowed 1/4000 of second to happen with the available light of the moment.
The new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot and the 135mm f1.8 lens Plena. An exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and the Plena is just a visual pleasure to look through whilst I shoot.

Soooo....last year I had the opportunity to work on a feature film "Pinball. The Man Who Saved the Game."as the "stills" photographer. I have had few gigs that were as big a blast and and as an all around good time as that gig was. The film was written ad directed by Austin and Meredith Bragg. The film cast was over the top with talent- Mike Faist, Dennis Boutsikaris, Kenneth Tigar, Bryan Batt, Damian Young, Mike Doyle, Rosa Arredondo and Crystal Reed.
Even better is my images are going to be use for the poster art and promo art for the film! I always feel like I am floating a 6inches off the ground when I see my work in print! Thank you Tony Glazer and Summer Crockett Moore for recommending me for the gig and that you Moving Picture Institute for hiring me!

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the week after my students went back to the US. This time I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5.I was walking to lunch at 304 O'Rielly Cafe. Construction worker in congrete dust. 1400 ISO. Available light.
So so if you want to know why I choose to light with a thermonuclear device instead do a battery powered light source. Now you know.
However......
There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....
Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

In a portrait, I'm looking for the silence in somebody.
– Henri Cartier-Bresson
This image is from most recent trip to Cuba.
Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting images. That said…
I approach shooting my portraits as if they were landscapes and my landscapes as if they were portraits.
The film direct Irvin Kershner said “There's nothing more interesting than the landscape of the human face.” My goal in a portrait is to be seen through by the subject, not looked at, so I can see the entire landscape of the silence within them. For me there is nothing more satisfying photographically knowing I heard that silence and photographed the entire landscape of it. The initial observance of the elusive breath held expectant moment of time, frozen for all time.
I shot this image just before the ballerina Lilia Laura Martinez Hernandez started her series of leaps for me at sunset. Hence the shutter speed of 1/16000. I need that to freeze the motion. To capture motion with stillness. I chose the Z6III because of the amazing low to no noise at higher ISO.
I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR S85mm f/1.2 lens. 1/400 of a second ISO 2800. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection and Silver efex 7.
hia is the black and white version.

I shot this series of images at breakfast on the last day of my cuba workshop. These images are of my good friend Dan Stienhardt. According to him he “Has a face made for radio.” Every picture tells a story but I found that every story has many more pictures. This sequence of images was shot between the first and second cups of coffee. (It is important to note that those in the know know that Cuban coffee is a godawful cup of Joe. I bring my own 50% Arabian Mocha Sanni/50% organic French roast from Peets (whole bean of course) , a grinder and a French press. Life is way to short to drink bad coffee. But I digress…..
Dano for as long as I have known him both does and does not take life too seriously. He may not know what he wants but he always knows what he does not want until he sees what he wants. He is also one of the funniest people I know. All I remember was that the light was really cool and when it registered to him I was actually taking pictures this is what I got.
Dano is a big part of the reason I have the career I have been blessed to have.
WHAT A BLAST this last workshop was. I shot these image with the new Nikon Zf a very fun camera to shoot using the BW mode. (The gesture was too strong with Dano for colour. I have included color version to prove my point) and the 50mm f1.2 lens. Bokeh is my thing. Another exquisitely beautify piece of glass to work with. More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

Second post processed image from my “Marilyn Monroe” shoot with Stephanie Stuart arguably the Best Marilyn Monroe impersonator in the country.
In 1962 Nikon released the Nikon "F". Not only did Nikon release the camera they released it with a slew of lenses and accessories. Over 800,000 Nikon "F" cameras were sold. In 1962 Nikon ran an ad campaign that featured Marylin Monroe shot by Bert Stern. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpXixgkR3II) Sadly it would also be her last photo shoot.
What I wanted to do was celebrate the shoot using the tech of today. Soooooo you will be seeing a lot of images from the shoot we did on the deck of my studio.
I am a big believer in getting it as close to completely right in the camera as reality allows. What I was able to do with the combo of the sunbounce cage and hive lights was magic. 'hhHands give clues to the entire personality of the subject's moods, attitude, tension. — Yousef Karsh
My grandfather Pasquale use to quip that all you ever need to to to shut up an Italian was to make them sit on their hands. Hands are as communicative, sometimes even more than, the expression on the face of the subject of a portrait. I am completely captivated by hands.
One thing to keep in mind is I never pose any of my subjects. Be it in the studio or when I am doing street photography. All my images are “found” of the moment and absolutely spontaneous.
I am not sure which I prefer the color or the black and white. But this hand truly do tell a story of a life.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."
The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.
To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.
For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.
My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.
This is an image of the Cuban Ballerina Elena. In this image the Elena was resting in a small window frame and I was out side on the even smaller balcony shooting towards her, in between rain showers.
The light source was ambient rainy daylight.
When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.
I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.
There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.
This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.
So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.
Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.
NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.
To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.
So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.
I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Photographing in Yosemite Valley is the photographic equivalent to catching fish in a barrel. Shot this standing on a bridge watching sunset on Half Dome. Heading back from Glacier Point, a ride made even better because I was riding my 1964 R69s BMW motorcycle I saved peeling the infra-red tape off of my eyes till I was back at the Ahwanee because it was a real pain.

Nor was a 128GB Lexar flash card used and absolutely no post processing with Capture NX 2 then Photoshop CC and Nik Colorefex and Silver Efex Pro software. I simply used two pieces of red tape over my eyes and then with my will etched the pixels on to Flickr.
Final file is stored and scaled using Perfect Resize (AKA Genuine Fractals.)

From my recent PBPW Cuba workshop. This is from the second day I was allowed the joy of shooting with the Nikon D5.These are the hands of an 86 year old man. The road map of is his life etched there.
There is no image I cannot capture. The ability of this camera to shoot in lighting conditions so dark that you have to to image that there is light to provide illumination. Spot on color, speed touch screen focus in live view. Whoa.....
Because of the D5 I AM: A Super Hero.

Today I saw a red and yellow sunset and thought, how insignificant I am! Of course, I thought that yesterday too, and it rained.
– Woody Allen
Ever notice that photographs of sunsets always tend to look better than the sunset when you were photographing it but photographs of sunsets are never as wonderful as seeing the sunset whilst you are photographing it? I have been chasing this image for years. Either has been a scaffolding up on the capitol dome or I am not there at the right time or I have the wrong piece of glass for the the shot I want or it’s raining. It’s always something. Then as we were walking back to the cars because the light had crapped out and we wee calling it a day just as I turned the corner to go the the car I was in the right spot at the right time with the right lens.
This image was captured with the Nikon Zf and the 135mm f1.8 Plena Nikkor. The Zf is the camera I grab when I have no idea what I am walking into and Nikkor optics are just a visual pleasure to look through wilst I shoot. Nobody does In focus to blur as well as Nikon does

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."
The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.
Just the subject
My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.
This image was shot insde an inclosed market, the only light is sunlight coming through a few partially opened slats. The fruit vendorr is lost in thought. That is the moment that took me, the remberace of the moment that he is lost in and is taking him. This is the same as the previous image Converted using my multi-SEP conversion approach, discussed in chapter eight of my book "From Oz to Kansas"

Also as I have said before, I carry the V-1 with me where ever I go. So I always have a camera. One of the powerful things of the V1 (it pains me to like this camera as much as I do) is that it is not intimidating. Again this was captured as
I was walking in Trinidad Cuba. I had this around my neck and the other cameras were in my bag. We had just finished lunch. I pointed and shot. Because the camera did not say "Look it's the dreaded Photojournalist" but rather "yet another tourist" I was able to get the candid expression.

(This is a four parter) Image 4
Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " section
This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.
I am frequently asked "how do you get away with getting so close to people?" and "How do you get people to ope up to you? Do you speak the language?" My language skills are akin to someone saying they are a musician because the instrument they play is the stereo. I n other words I barely speak English. That said I do do speak fluent silly. The ability to play and the willingness to make a complete fool of myself in public has served my photography career well.
This is the "picture story" of the three in a tryptic.
There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path. This a warrior form Kyal Yar village

Another from one of my old working headshot portfolios from way back in the day when there was some art involved vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo and a yearbook picture. You can find pictures anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them.

There is alwa=ys something to photograph. There is always something beautiful to see that is frequently just under our nose. The key I feel is being able to slow down to the speed of life.
I love doing abstracts of things we see everyday but just walk by. I love playing with those objects as geometric shapes that I further explore focus and blur, light and dark sharpness and softness which is different from focus and blur).
