"... ¡Olivares centellados
en las tardes cenicientas,
bajo los cielos preñados
de tormentas!...
Olivares, Dios os dé
los eneros
de aguaceros,
los agostos de agua al pie,
los vientos primaverales,
vuestras flores racimadas;
y las lluvias otoñales
vuestras olivas moradas...."

Olive Harvest in October
Chapeau to all the men who do this tedious job. This year I was there to help for private household. 20kg of olives, provided 2 l of oil.
Unfortunately, the harvest was very bad.
Too much rain, then again strong heat, high humidity. Very unusual climate for Sicily. The harvest, witch otherwhise took 14 days, was in 3 days passeé. But it was beauiful, pleasant warmth, bright blue sky. Nature awakens again in Setember, october. It's almost like spring, even the lilac flowers between catus fruits, hibiscus, solidago, jasmin, boungavilea and pomegranate. It was paradisal.
That hop on hop off bus does wonders when one does not drive a car. I've hopped a lot! This picture, a simple example of how the Cretan landscape looks like, was taken near Rethymno in Crete ((in dutch Kreta ) It surely was a hot day, the gorgeous colours of Crete, the brown red soil and olive trees, the mountains , the blue sky with some clouds, make it a beautiful view in my opinion.
This was a magical moment from my recent visit to Puglia. The trullo I stayed in was surrounded by a few acres of olive trees that must have been hundreds of years old. It had rained very heavily overnight, so when I woke just after sunrise there was a thick mist - not for long though, as the warmth of the sun began its work.
This shows the Grand Rue leading to the Place de la Mairie in Cotignac. The village church is on the left. I've always thought it's a bit of a misnomer calling it the Grand Rue as it certainly doesn't much look like a "high street" as we know it although despite not being able to see them in this photo, the street does have lots of little boutiquey artisanal shops on either side further up, plus a bakery and opticians. Traffic is one way, going up towards the Place de la Mairie. I processed it to monochrome because I liked the curvy lines of the road and the bollards in the foreground.

The garden of the Kolymbethra (Greek term for a type of swimming pool used in Roman times for water games) is an archaeological site of great natural and landscape importance, located in a small valley in the heart of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.
This shot was taken from small walkway around the castle roof top shown in some of my other shots (Italy-Monterchi 2022-45). It provided some stunning views of the landscape and surrounding villages and community buildings. It was very windy, but the weather was sunny and warm!
After an exhausting , hour-long walk in the sweltering heat in the Impero Valley, the Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saints Nazarius and Celsus appears amid an immense olive grove.
It is a place of worship, of Spirit, of work as well as a place of Peace.
The first Christian church from this abbey is located near the village of Borgomaro (Liguria-Italy) and dates from the period between the second and third century AD.
From here emerged a small Christian community that, over time, became the beacon of the surrounding villages and hamlets.
Its complete reconstruction dates back to 1498 and the abbey has been run continuously by Benedictine monks from this time.
As can be seen, the abbey boast an immense outdoor area that has been preserved in its originality.
Monastic life basically encompasses the ordinairy life of every person, but God comes first here.
The monks pray for four and a half hours a day and in between prayers they have to work hard.
This soaking serves to maintain the order as they are entirely self-sufficient in their livelihood.
The monks completely independently cultivate the historic olive grove with over 600 olive trees and also try to be available for hospitality.
This abbey is an ideal centre both in attractiveness and also from its geographical location.
But above all , it wants to be a reference for all those looking for a space of silence, beautiness, hospitality, prayer and to let themselves be and rediscover God within........
(Ettore Della Giovanna)

Happy in winter. This pink and maroon hollyhock plant is in a flowerpot under an olive tree in my front garden in the late afternoon's dappled sun and shade
