Olives and vines at Belvedere

This is a view looking southwest at housing on Bixby Street; the original part of the building constructed circa the 1920s, with significant modifications made in 1965. An olive tree stands out in front. Photo taken by Daralee on January 24, 2010.

Rain soaked rotten over-ripe olives fallen to the ground and lying on our driveway. Just hoping most of them stay on the trees for another week or 10 days.

In other news the new gardener we got to help us with the basic jungle taming is a local with extensive olive tree knowledge who promises to come back and pruen the trees properly in March. He has a great local provençal accent - the swear word "Putain!" turns into "Puteng!" and I think that sounds so much better :)

Apparently, this is an old monastery, now inhabited by an old lady and plenty of goats. I've seen the goats, but not the lady.

The city of Gortys became important in the 1st millenium BC and after the Roman occupation of Crete in 67 BC it became the capital. In 798 AD the city was hit by an earthquake and after the Arab occupation in 828 AD the city suffered further destruction.

Crete has thousands of little churches but this one was a bit of a puzzle. Tucked away amidst olive trees on the upper slopes of Polyrhinia it was signed only in Greek and I got the impression that it was a shrine to (and possibly a burial ground for) the local resistance fighters.

Whatever it may be it was in a glorious location.

In the corner of our garden there is an agave which is now about to flower and die. So here is it is with the olive tree that has seen it start as a little seedling and will now see its children grow up

The hill above Alquife showing olive and almond trees, with the white houses of Alquife perched on the side of the hill. This hill is owned by and is part of the Alquife Mines or as they are known locally, the Minos de Marquesado - - - - - - -

Next to the Pont Du Gard and brought here from Spain (the tree)!

this view is one of my favorite shots of this cold spell.

Snow-sun and olivetrees-

the wind was fierce and cold that day, but we suffer for our hobby, LOL

My father came down to visit on his way to a conference near Turin. He spent some of Monday sitting outside in the shade by the olive trees and reading Ursula Le Guin's "The Dispossessed" that he took from my bookshelves.
