Small owl of fairly open country, such as farmland with hedges and scattered trees, orchards, open woodland, and quarries. Distinctive, with white-spotted upperparts. Staring yellow eyes and white brows, together with frequently upright stance, often create alert appearance. Nests in cavities in trees and rocks. Sometimes active by day, perching quietly on posts or rocks, but mainly active at night.

Saw this lady find shade in an ancient olive tree stump. Summer came early here and during the heat of the day they try and find shade where ever they can. This area was full of alive ancient olive trees. A local told me they are more that a 1000-1500 years old. This tree came to its end but is still giving shade!

Aquest és un dels arbres monumentals més espectaculars de Catalunya, i no pel seu volum, precisament, ja que més aviat és petit. Es troba a les afores de la vila d'Horta de Sant Joan.
Però es tracta d'una olivera amb una edat estimada d'uns 2000 anys! Penseu-hi, probablement quan fou plantada a Roma i manava Cesar August! És tant antiga que no és de cap varietat coneguda, ella mateixa és la seva propia varietat única (tot i que té semblances a la empeltre, molt extesa per la Terra Alta).

This is one of the most spectacular monumental trees in Catalonia, and not because of its volume, precisely, since it is rather small. It is located on the outskirts of the town of Horta de Sant Joan.
But this is an olive tree with an estimated age of around 2000 years! Think about it, probably when it was planted, in Rome ruled Caesar Augustus! It is so old that it is not of any known variety, it is itself its own unique variety (although it has similarities to the "empeltre", which is widespread in Terra Alta).
It's name, "lo Parot" means "great father".
We've been taking Bob for a walk in this charming area surrounding the village for the past week. It's got lots of little vineyards and olive groves. We've been looking for places to wander with Bob where there are no other dogs as she is still in season and we have one particular dog who quite literally is laying siege to our home. It's very upsetting for Bob as it comes right up to the windows and glass doors. It looks like a moth eaten old English Sheepdog which has definitely seen better days - it's rather ugly in fact. We don't know where the owner lives but it must be nearby. Plus, it's peeing on everything around the house. What a bloody nuisance it is.
