A little detour to sunny southern France today with a photo from my archives. It was a lovely afternoon in Menton, the last town along the French Riviera before the Italian border. This was a charming glimpse of the gardens at one of the former late 19th century British hotels of the Belle Epoque. There are several of these perched along a hillside overlooking the Mediterranean. Sheltered as it is from cold northern winds by the Maritime Alps, Menton has the warmest winters in all of France. As a result all manner of exotic gardens thrive there.
I think one can get a taste of some of the excitement that Matisse and Renoir enjoyed when they traveled to this part of France. It's very true that the light, cultural atmosphere, colors and climate were so different from their home regions. It inspired their beautiful paintings!
This shot was taken from small walkway around the castle roof top shown in some of my other shots (Italy-Monterchi 2022-45). It provided some stunning views of the landscape and surrounding villages and community buildings. It was very windy, but the weather was sunny and warm!
The islet of San Paolo, which can be seen on the left of the screen, cannot be visited because it is inhabited by private individuals. The dense vegetation of pines, larches and exotic plants and the particular position facing the gulf of Lake Iseo make this islet an enchanted place.
Old olive grove - and a path still in use. Almost at a watering hole - we were gasping for a drink here.

Olive tree. The next day….. Laconia Greece.
More than 580 fires were observed throughout the country since July 27, razing hundreds of houses and businesses to the ground.
Other countries around the Mediterranean were also severely hit by wildfires including Turkey, Italy and Algeria.

Experimenting a bit here with a photo of a Black Redstart. This was actually the first photo I took this year, but never got around to posting it.
Taken at a nearby Pépinière (Nursery) late in the afternoon when the low sun was hitting the terracotta wall at this seating area underneath an exceedingly old olive tree. I thought it looked magnificent.
