First Division
Narrative
On the 3rd of August 1914 the Australian government offered to send an expeditionary force of 20,000 men to Europe, which it decided to organise as an infantry division and a light horse brigade. Accordingly, the First Division was formed in Australia in August 1914. Intended to be representative of the nation as a whole, it was organised from contingents from all states. It was originally intended to send the division to England for training and thence on to the Western Front but the division was diverted to Egypt instead on the recommendation of Colonel Harry Chauvel, owing to the state of training areas in the United Kingdom. The division arrived in Egypt in December and began training at Mena, near Cairo, and in sight of the great pyramids.
On Anzac Day, 25 April 1915, the First Division made an amphibious assault at what is now known as Anzac Cove, on the Gallipoli Peninsula. On Anzac Day the division was unable to capture its objectives but secured a toehold on the peninsula. It served throughout the campaign there. In May the 2nd Brigade was re-embarked and participated in the attack on Krithia at Helles but returned in time for the Turkish counter offensive on 19 May. On 15 May, its commander, Major General William Bridges was fatally wounded by a sniper. During the August offensive, the First Division captured the Turkish positions around Line Pine. Finally, it was involved in the withdrawal to Egypt in December 1915.
In March 1916 it moved to France, taking over part of the line in the "nursery sector" around Armentieres. On 23 July 1916, it joined the Somme Offensive, capturing the town of Pozieres at great cost. A second tour of Pozieres followed in August and a third at Flers in October after a rest break in the Ypres sector.
In 1917 it was involved in the pursuit of the Germans to the Hindenburg Line. While maintaining outposts close to that line around Lagnicourt, the division was struck by a powerful German counterattack on 15 April 1917 and beat it off. In May it relieved the Second Division in the Second Battle of Bullecourt.
After a rest spell, the division returned to the Ypres Salient and participated in the Third Battle of Ypres, in which it fought with great success at Menin Road in September and Broodeseinde in October.
In April 1918 the First Division halted the German offensive at Hazebrouck. It remained there, apart from the other divisions for four months, engaging in a spirited and active campaign against the enemy. It rejoined the Australian Corps in the Somme region in 1918 in time to participate in the Battle of Amiens and fought on to the Hindenburg Line.

Honor and Respect is offered to these Great Leaders of History
Geronimo
1829-1909
Known to his tribe as Goyathlay, meaning "One Who Yawns". Born in present day New Mexico at the headwaters of the Gila River, Geronimo was the last warrior fighting for the Chiricahua Apache. He became famous for standing against the U.S. Government & for holding out the longest. He was a spiritual leader & medicine man. Geronimo final surrender in 1886 was the last significant Apache guerrilla action in the U.S., his group consisted of only 16 warriors, 12 women, & six Children.
Mangas Colorades
1797-1862
A Chiricahua Chief & natural leader because of his intelligence & size. Unusually tall, he was over six feet in height. Mangas united the Apache tribes, led them in a successful war of revenge & cleared the New Mexico area of white settlers. After the Americans started to occupy the region, searching for gold, Mangas tried several peaceful ways to get the whites out of his land. On one occasion, miners tied him to a tree & lashed him nearly to death before releasing him, he was killed by Union soldiers at Fort McLane. One soldier took his scalp, another boiled his flesh from his head, & sold the skull to a phrenologist.
Loren
1840s-1889
Lozen was the younger sister of the mighty Apache war leader Victorio, & the most famous of the Apache War Women. Victorio is quoted as saying, Loren is my right hand...strong as a man, braver than most, & cunning in strategy, Loren is a shield to her people." Loren was quite unlike her counterpart, Dahteste. Loren had no concern for her appearance &, even though she is an several famous photos of Geronimo with his warriors, there is nothing to indicate that she is a woman. She was manly in her appearance, dressed like a man, lived & fought like a man. She devoted her life to the service of her people.
Cochise
1800s-1874
Shi-ka-she was a tall man, six feet, with broad shoulders & a commanding appearance. He never met a man his equal with a lance, & like Crazy Horse, was never photographed. Many have said that he was the most powerful Apache leader in history. At his death, it was reported that his people wailed loudly for more than a day. After his death, the Government broke the historic treaty made with Cochise & in 1876 moved the Chiricahua from the ancient mountain homeland to the dry Arizona desert. "Nobody wants peace more than I do. Why shut me on a reservation? We will make peace; we will keep it faithfully. But let us go around free as Americans do. Let is go wherever we please".
Victoria
1825-1880
A Chiricahua Chief of the Warm Springs Apache. When his people were removed from their ancestral home to the desolate reservation of San Carlos, Arizona, Victorio bolted for Mexico with a group of followers. He & his people terrorized the border country with continual raids. Victorio always managed to elude his pursuers. In October 1880, Victorio died at a place called Tres Castillos while waiting for a small raiding party to acquire ammunition they needed. Victorio was taken by surprise when Genral Joaquin Terrazas & his army attacked Victorio & his band of 78 Apache. His descendants reside on the Mescalero Apache Reservation.
Nana
1810-1900s
Nana was married to Geronimo's sister. After Victorio's death at the Tres Castillos massacre in 1880, it was Nana who guided the remians of the tribe into safety. For more than two months Nana eluded 1400 troops in a thousand-mile campaign with only 40 warriors. Even at an old age & almost with a crippled leg, Nana could out-ride & out-last any warrior in the saddle. He showed no signs of weakness, & challenged any white man that stood in his way. It is said that to revenge of Victorio's death Nana was responsible for killing more white men than Victorio had done in his lifetime. Nana died of old age, & lived his last years in reservation.

Call me Snake offers an optimistic provocation – ‘imagine what could be here’ by Judy Millar. On a walk into the city October 3, 2015 Christchurch New Zealand.
The work is comprised of vibrant graphics of Millar’s looped paintings, which are adhered to five intersecting flat planes, and draws inspiration from the forms found in pop-up books. The colourful piece will add a dramatic and rhythmic counterpoint to the city’s current urban landscape — a mix of flattened sites, construction zones and defiant buildings that have stood through the quakes. The work employs theatricality, playfulness and visual trickery, whereby the viewer is unsure about the work’s flatness or three-dimensionality; and it has been designed to offer a different perspective from each angle. The bright colours interrupt the grey of the work’s surrounds, and as buildings pop up around it,
SCAPE 8, New Intimacies curated by Rob Garrett was a contemporary art event which mixed new artworks with existing legacy pieces, an education programme, and a public programme of events. The SCAPE 8 artworks were located around central Christchurch and linked via a public art walkway. All aspects of SCAPE 8 were free-to-view.
The title for the 2015 Biennial – New Intimacies – came from the idea that visually striking and emotionally engaging public art works can create new connections between people and places. Under the main theme of New Intimacies there are three other themes that artists responded to: Sight-Lines, Inner Depths and Shared Strengths.

This three-day conference is offered in the Group Relation tradition which offers a unique opportunity to study the conscious and unconscious dynamics involved in how groups organize themselves and interact with each other. This conference is not a passive learning event that relies upon lectures. Instead, the learning is experiential. Participants study how leadership, followership, authority, task, boundaries, and roles operate in the different group experiences they enter during the conference.

Sometimes people just want to look fancy. On Tuesday, Sportrock Alexandria offered a chance to do just that with their sixth annual Penguin Climb on April 15. At the event, both ladies and gentlemen are encouraged to dig deep through their closets to find their “best” formal wear to come climb.
Who says that prom dresses can only be worn once? Though after climbing in it, there is a chance that dress may never be worn again. Though, this year, it’s been re-branded as Tux Day, in honor of 1040s everywhere.

She refused polietly as she could and Shy flew away. During breeding season the male likes to show his manliness by offering the female food as if to say I'm a big strong guy that can feed two. I visit this magnificent nature reserve on a regular basis as it is less than a 10 minute drive from my home , many visitors to our city miss its glorious offerings, thinking all we have to offer is the beach front at the main boulevard , its a pity as this reserve is a short drive from the main tourist area and has its own charm, attraction and wealth of nature on offer, I love it .
Donmouth Local Nature Reserve is a beach site in the historic Old Aberdeen part of the City where the River Don meets the sea.
A great place to see seals and a range of interesting birds. The beach area has changed over time as the river has changed its course. There are lots of interesting plants in the dunes and beach area. Bird hide is an excellent shelter from which to watch the wildlife. The paths run across King Street to the Brig 'o Balgownie., the original bridge in to the City from the North, then down the other side of the river to the sea.
The site was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1992
Paths are good although wheelchair access to the beach would be difficult as the boardwalk can get covered with sand.
There is plenty of free car parking on the Beach Esplanade and at the car park in Donmouth Road. There are cycle racks on Beach Esplanade
Bridge Of Don has five spans of dressed granite, and rounded cutwaters that carry up to road level to form pedestrian refuges. The spans are 75 feet (23 m), with a rise of 25 feet (7.6 m).
It was widened in 1958-59, from 24 feet (7.3 m), to 66 feet (20 m) by the construction of a new concrete bridge adjacent to the old one.
It now carries four lanes of the A956 road, and is the last bridge on the River Don before it meets the sea. The bridge is just downstream from a substantial island in the river. Around the area of the bridge is the Donmouth Local Nature Reserve, designated as a LNR in 1992.
Near to the bridge are a number of World War II era coastal defences, including a pill box.
Mudflats
Mudflats are formed when fine particles carried downstream by the river are deposited as it slows down before entering the sea, and to a lesser extent by fine particles washed in by the tide. The sand spit at the mouth of the Don provides shelter from the wind and waves allowing this material to build up. The mud flats are a very rich and fertile environment. Despite their rather barren appearance they support a surprisingly diverse invertebrate fauna which includes; worms, molluscs and crustacea. These invertebrates are vitally important to wildfowl and wading birds within the estuary.
Salt marsh
Along the upper shore of the south bank saltmarsh has developed. This habitat would once have been much more extensive prior to the tipping of domestic and other refuse in the area and the formation in 1727 of an artificial embankment to prevent flooding of the river into the Links. This habitat is now reduced to a narrow strip of vegetation along the river margins upstream from the Powis Burn.
The species composition of the salt marsh varies according to the salinity of the water i.e. the proximity to the sea. Close to the Powis Burn this habitat is dominated by reed sweet-grass (Glyceria maxima) with reed canary-grass (Phalaris arundinacea), sea club-rush (Scirpus maritimus), spike-rush (Eleocharis palustris), hemlock water-dropwort (Oenanthe crocata) and common scurvygrass (Chochlearia officinalis).
Further inland reed sweet-grass continues to dominate but hemlock water-dropwort is more abundant with meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and valarian (Valariana officinalis),
Sand dunes
Sand dunes are found in the more exposed parts of the estuary at the river mouth. Again, this habitat was once much more extensive in this locality with dune grasslands stretching from Aberdeen Beach inland as far as King Street, southwards from the estuary of the Dee, northwards to the Sands of Forvie and beyond. Many of the dunes formed part of Seaton Tip, and following tipping the area was grassed over. Other areas have been formally landscaped to form golf courses or planted with native trees in 2010 to create a new woodland area.
Some remnants of the natural dune flora can be seen in the 'roughs' on the Kings Links golf course and near the mouth of the river.
Above the high water mark, fore dunes with thick clumps of the pioneer grass species including sea lyme grass (Elymus arenarius) and marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) occur. Few other species are able to cope with the shifting sand. The largest area of these young dunes is to the north and west of the headland. Further inland where the dunes are sheltered from the actions of the wind and waves, and soils are more developed, more stable dunes are present supporting a more diverse grassland habitat.
Strand line plants which are able to tolerate occasional coverage by sea water include sea rocket (Cakile maritima), frosted orache (Atriplex laciniata), sea sandwort (Honkenya peploides) and knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare). Bur-reed (Sparganium sp.) has been recorded; presumably washed down by the river.
Marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) and sea lyme grass (Elymus arenarius) dominate the fore dunes. The latter species is not native to this area but appeared in 1802. It is thought to have been unintentionally introduced into the area by fishing boats. For a number of years it remained uncommon but from 1870 onwards it spread rapidly along the coastline (Marren, 1982).
In the more stable dunes red fescue (Festuca rubra), sand sedge (Carex arenaria), yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor), wild pansy (Viola tricolour), harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), bird's-foot-trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) and lesser meadow-rue (Thalictrum minus) are abundant. Small amounts of kidney vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria), valerian (Valeriana officinalis) and spring vetch (Vicia lathyroides) are present.
Scattered willows (Salix sp.) and sycamore (Acer pseudoplantanus) have seeded into this area. Gorse (Ulex europaeus) scrub has colonised the dunes in some areas and appears to be spreading.
Scrub
This habitat is almost entirely artificial with only the gorse scrub on the inner dunes being a semi-natural habitat. Alder and willow were planted along the south bank of the river in about 1970 and these shrubs are now generally well established. Further shrub planting on the south bank was carried out in 1990.
Willow (Salix sp.) and alder (Alnus glutinosa) were planted in the 1970's along the south bank of the River Don eastwards of the Bridge of Don. The trees to the west of this strip are doing considerably better than those to the east. More recent planting was carried out in 1990 with hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) elder (Sambucus nigra), goat willow (Salix caprea) and alder.
Underneath the scrub neutral grassland is present with cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), false oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius), cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris), sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata), hedge woundwort (Stachys sylvatica) and hedge bindweed (Calystegia sepium).
Grassland
Much of the grassland within the reserve is formed on imported soil and is intensively managed. This includes grassland on the north and south sides of the Esplanade. Daffodils are present in the grassland on the north side of the road. On the north bank to the east of the Bridge of Don is rank grassland on a steep south-facing slope. This is unmanaged and contains some patches of scrub.
Rough grassland is present on the headland. This area has been modified by tipping, with rubble to the east and with grass cuttings to the west. The grassland contains a mixture of neutral grassland, dune grassland, ruderal, and introduced garden species. This area attracts flocks of seed eating birds in late summer and autumn.
Improved grassland is present on the headland and along the south bank of the estuary downstream from the bridge of Don. Much of this vegetation has developed on imported soil and contains a high proportion of ruderal species and garden escapes. On the headland, broadleaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius), nettle (Urtica dioica), coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), spear thistle (Cirsium vulgare), cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris), hemlock (Conium maculatum) and hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium) are abundant. Sweet cicely (Chaerophyllum bulbosum) is widespread and in late summer fills the air with the scent of aniseed.
To the south of the Esplanade the grassland is managed with an annual cut.. The grassland does flood to form pools. Early in the year cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis) is common, meadow foxtail (Alopecuris pratensis)is known to occur around the margins of these pools.
Woodland
Semi-mature woodland is present on the steep sided south bank of the river upstream from the Bridge of Don. Most of this woodland has been planted in the mid 1930's though some older oak and elm trees are present. These may be relicts of former woodland cover. The woodland in the reserve is part of a strip of woodland along the River Don corridor which continues upstream from the Brig 'o' Balgownie.
Woodland is present on the south bank upstream from the Bridge of Don.
Much of the woodland consists of even aged stands with willow (Salix sp.), sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), beech (Fagus sylvatica) and alder (AInus glutinosa). At the top of the slope mature oak (Quercus sp.) and elm (Ulmus glabra) are present. The ground flora contains tufted hair-grass (Deschampsia caespitosa), red campion (Silene dioica), ramsons (Allium ursinum) and lady fern (Athyrium felix-femina) .In a few areas dense shading is caused by the trees and in these areas the ground flora is poor.
On the north bank scattered trees are present, mainly willow and sycamore with some scrub.

British and international tour operators have been warned that they will face prosecution if they continue to offer "human safaris" to India.
Three Indian tour operators have already been charged in connection with the Observer's investigation into "human safaris" and two men are facing up to seven years in jail if convicted.
But the tour operators have hit back, accusing independent foreign travellers of breaking rules and giving tour firms a bad name.
Last week's Observer investigation of safaris to see the Bonda tribe of Orissa prompted an immediate response from the state's government, with the chief minister ordering an inquiry and sending a senior official to investigate.
Police in the state capital, Bhubaneswar, raided the offices of Dove Tours – named in the Observer report – and registered a case against the company for "selling products in [an] obscene manner in public". In a statement Orissa police said: "We have registered a case against a city-based tour operator after finding its brochures and website containing certain objectionable material." The company denies the allegations.
Tourists were barred from visiting Bonda villages in 1989 after reports that some had been taking photographs of naked members of the tribe. The Observer investigation found that travel agents were getting around the law by taking tourists to view them at the weekly markets they attend. Some promoted the tours with references to the scanty dress of Bonda women. Several tour companies have since removed offending offers from their websites.
Orissa's culture secretary, Ashok Tripathy, said Orissa welcomed "rich and enlightened" tourists who treated the tribe with respect. "Cheap offers mentioning that Bondas roam naked", and the prospect of photographing, them should not be used to lure tourists, he said. He warned tour operators that they would be prosecuted if they continued to use "obnoxious" methods to promote tribal tourism.
However, Gagan Sarangi, director of Dove Tours, defended local operators, putting the blame on independent travellers. He told the Times of India: "There are foreigners visiting the tribal areas independently. Since visits to Bonda areas are permitted up to the weekly markets, many avoid taking the help of tour operators. Such people are unaware of basic rules, end up hurting the sentiments of people and give a bad name to our profession," he said.
Yet in the Andaman Islands – where the Observer first exposed the scandal of human safaris to see the protected Jarawa tribe, and women being forced to dance in return for food – tourists continue to pour through the jungle, despite promises by the Indian government to crack down on tours.
On Thursday two men – Rajesh Kumar Vyas and Sarjeet Singh Guddu – appeared in court in Port Blair charged with organising a trip into the Jarawa reserve which was highlighted in the Observer investigation. They were remanded in custody for two weeks and could face up to seven years in jail.
Police said that taking a foreigner into the Jarawa reserve amounted to "intentionally insulting with the intent to humiliate a vulnerable primitive tribe of these islands".
Professor Anvita Abbi, a linguist, said the Jarawa were in danger of going the same way as the Great Andamanese tribe, who once numbered 5,000 but are now down to 56 people. Two years ago the last speaker of the Bo language – one of 10 spoken by the tribe– died.
Stephen Corry, director of Survival International, which campaigns on behalf of tribal peoples, said: "At a time when evidence of human safaris has prompted global outrage, it's vital the Indian government closes the Andaman Trunk Road." The road cuts through Jarawa territory making it easier for tourists to contact the tribe.
The Association of British Travel Agents has defended tour operators, insisting that most act responsibly and that tourism can bring economic benefits to indigenous people. Spokesman Sean Tipton said: "It is important that any interaction between tourists and indigenous people happens with the prior consent of the indigenous people."
