Covid-19 vaccine booster effectiveness wanes after four months but still offers protection, study finds
Booster doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna coronavirus vaccines are safe, and they offer high levels of protection against severe Covid-19 even though that protection can wane over time, according to two studies published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday.
Evidence of waning protection "reinforces the importance of further consideration of additional doses to sustain or improve protection" against Covid-19-linked hospitalizatoions and emergency department visits," the study says.
One of the studies, published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, examined vaccine effectiveness against Covid-19 hospitalizations and emergency department and urgent care visits among adults in the United States who were either fully vaccinated with two doses or received a third dose of vaccine as a booster. The data included 241,204 emergency department or urgent care visits and 93,408 hospitalizations across 10 states between August 26 and January 22.
The data showed that vaccine effectiveness against emergency department visits and hospitalizations was higher after the third dose than after the second dose but waned over time.
With the Omicron variant dominant in the United States, vaccine effectiveness was 87% against Covid-19 emergency department or urgent care visits and 91% against hospitalizations in the two months after a third dose. It fell to 66% and 78%, respectively, by the fourth month, the data showed.
After just two doses of vaccine, when the Omicron variant was predominant, vaccine effectiveness against hospitalizations declined from 71% in the two months after vaccination to 54% by at least five months, the study found.
The data also showed vaccine effectiveness dropping while the Delta variant was dominant.
Among recipients of three doses during the time Delta was dominant, vaccine effectiveness against Covid-19-associated hospitalizations declined from 96% within two months of vaccination to 76% at least months later. However, the researchers noted that the latter estimate could be imprecise because few data were available on people vaccinated for at least four months after a third dose during the time Delta was predominant.
Overall, "these findings underscore the importance of receiving a third dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine to prevent both COVID-19-associated ED/UC encounters and COVID-19 hospitalizations among adults," researchers at the CDC and other institutions across the United States wrote in the new study.
The other CDC study analyzed safety data on Covid-19 booster shots that was reported to the federal government's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System between September and February among 721,562 adults who received booster shots.
The study found that booster doses of the coronavirus vaccines remain safe, and those who received the same type of vaccine for all of their vaccinations tended to have fewer reactions after the booster dose than after their second dose.
"Vaccination providers should educate patients that local and systemic reactions are expected following a homologous COVID-19 mRNA vaccine booster; however, these reactions are less common than those following the second primary series dose," wrote the researchers, from the CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration.

After Covid, risks of heart problems remain elevated for up to a year
Among the unvaccinated, long-term heart risks attributed to Covid-19 were "everywhere," researchers found.
As far as Michelle Wilson knew, she'd recovered from Covid-19.
Wilson, 65, contracted the virus in November 2020. Her illness, she said, was mild, and she was feeling ready to go back to work as a nurse in St. Louis by early December.
That's when her heart problems began.
"I literally woke up one morning, and my heart was racing and beating erratically," Wilson recalled. "I was having intense chest pain."
Fortunately, Wilson was not having a heart attack. But she did develop long-term heart problems, including high blood pressure, putting her at risk for further cardiovascular issues.
Despite her age, she had no prior medical history to suggest she was at risk for heart disease — other than Covid-19.
Indeed, it appears the coronavirus can leave patients at risk for heart problems for at least one year following infection, according to one of the largest analyses of post-Covid health effects to date.
The study, published last week in Nature Medicine, found that the illness increased the possibility of heart rhythm irregularities, as well as potentially deadly blood clots in the legs and lungs, in the year after an acute infection.
Covid also increased the risk for heart failure by 72 percent, heart attack by 63 percent and stroke by 52 percent — even among those, like Wilson, whose original illnesses were mild.
The study's lead author, Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis, said he and his colleagues expected to see some elevation in heart problems following Covid, but assumed it would be limited largely to people whose health wasn’t robust previously.
The elevated risk remained when researchers accounted for age and race, he said.
"It was a bit of a moment for us when we realized it was evident in all of these subgroups," Al-Aly said, "including younger adults, older adults, Black people, white people, people with obesity and those without."
"The risk was everywhere," he said.
Al-Aly's team examined the rates of new heart problems among 153,760 Covid patients for up to a year following their illness. The participants were patients who'd sought care within the Department of Veterans Affairs, and most were white men.
Cardiovascular outcomes were compared to two control groups: 5.6 million people without Covid, and another 5.9 million patients whose data was collected before the pandemic began.
Covid-19 patients in this study were infected before vaccines were available, so it is unclear how the shots might alter the findings.
But physicians on the front lines of treating Covid and its effects suspect vaccinations do cut heart risks because they reduce Covid infections in general.
"I've taken care of patients with heart problems" after Covid-19 infection, said Dr. Steve Nissen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic. "The vast majority are unvaccinated."
That Covid-19 appears to increase long-term risks of cardiovascular problems is not surprising to doctors. Other viruses, such as influenza and certain enteroviruses, have long been known to carry the same risks.
"Anybody who is hospitalized with any kind of pneumonia that they acquire in the community has these risks for six to 12 months," said Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones, president of the American Heart Association. "The open question for me is, is this something unique about Covid? Or is this the same story we already know?"
Covid's heart risks may be showing up with more regularity just because the virus spread so quickly.
"It's very concerning because so many people will be getting Covid in the next however many years, and so many have already gotten it," said Dr. Jennifer Haythe, co-director of the Women's Center for Cardiovascular Health at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York. "This may really increase the burden of cardiovascular disease across the board."
Al-Aly's research is not the first to suggest long-term heart risks following Covid-19.
A study of recovered Covid patients in Germany found that 78 percent of patients had heart abnormalities. Swedish research, too, found an increased risk of heart attack and stroke following Covid-19.
It is not entirely clear how Covid could cause heart problems over the long term, though it is known that the virus can affect blood vessels all over the body and in multiple organs, including the heart.
For Wilson, the irregular heartbeat has endured.
She has had to sleep nearly upright for months.
"It got so bad that when I laid down, I couldn't sleep because my heart was so erratic," she said.
Her physicians are now monitoring her for any indication of heart failure.
Regardless of infection, the pandemic itself is also upping the risk of heart health problems.
"Too many patients are delaying getting back into their routine within the health care system," Lloyd-Jones said. "We've seen marked increases in overall blood pressure levels, weight gain, worsening control of diabetes, and all of those things are contributing to increased risk."
Anyone whose Covid recovery stalls, or who experiences a sudden onset of new symptoms, such as chest pain, intense muscle weakness or shortness of breath, should call 911 immediately, Lloyd-Jones said.
Those aren't just red flags, he said. "Those are flashing lights."

Cebu City is a significant cultural centre in the Philippines. The imprint of Spanish and Roman Catholic culture is evident. The city's most famous landmark is Magellan's Cross. A few steps away from the Magellan's Cross is the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño (Church of the Holy Child). This is a Augustinian church elevated to the rank of Basilica in 1965 during the 400th year celebrations of Christianity in the Philippines, held in Cebu. The church, which was the first to be established in the islands, is built of hewn stone and features the country's oldest relic, the figure of the Santo Niño de Cebú ( Holy Child of Cebu ). This religious event is celebrated during the island's cultural festivities known as the Sinulog festival. Held every third Sunday of January, it celebrates the festival of the Santo Niño, who was formerly considered to be the patron saint of Cebu. The Sinulog is a dance ritual of pre-Hispanic indigenous origin. The dancer moves two steps forward and one step backward to the rhythmic sound of drums. This movement resembles somewhat the current (sulog) of the river. Thus, the Cebuanos called it Sinulog.
When the Spaniards arrived in Cebu, the Italian chronicler, Antonio Pigafetta, sailing under convoy with the Magellan expedition, offered a baptismal gift to Hara Amihan, wife of Rajah Humabon. She was later named Juana, the figure of the Santo Niño. The natives also honoured the Santo Niño de Cebu in their indigenous Sinulog ritual[citation needed]. The Sinulog ritual was preserved but limited to honouring the Santo Niño. Once the Santo Niño church was built in the 16th century, the Christian Malay people started performing the Sinulog ritual in front of the church, the devotees offering candles and indigenous dancers shouting ~ Viva Pit Señor!
Magellan's Cross is a Christian cross planted by Portuguese, and Spanish explorers as ordered by Ferdinand Magellan on arriving in Cebu in the Philippines around April 14 or 21, 1521. This cross is housed in a chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño on Magallanes Street ( Magallanes being the Spanish name of Magellan ), just in front of the city centre of Cebu City. A sign below the cross describes the original cross is encased inside the wooden cross that is found in the centre of the chapel. This is to protect the original cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross for souvenir purposes or in the belief that the cross possesses miraculous powers. Some people, however, believe that the original cross had been destroyed or had disappeared after Magellan's death, and the cross is a replica that was planted there by the Spaniards after they successfully colonized the Philippines.
The history is that when Ferdinand Magellan first arrived in Cebu on 21 April 1521 he erected a cross in Cebu. The cross there today is not the original. Magellan's Cross is one symbol of Cebu. This chapel's image can be found in Cebu city seal. It is also seen as the symbol of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines. Magellan and his crew were the first Europeans to arrive in the Philippines. They made the first conversions to Catholicism when they converted Rajah Humabon, the local chief, his wife and hundreds of his Cebuano villagers to accept Christianity and be consequently baptized. At the same time Magellan left in Cebu the Santo Nino de Cebu [ holy child of Cebu ] a doll figure made in Europe in the 16th Century representing Jesus Christ as a child. This doll was rediscovered some 45 years later the return to Cebu of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi who came back to Cebu on the order of King Phillip of Spain to make Cebu the first centre of the new Spanish Colony in Asia, called Las Islas Filipinas. Lincoln Hill offers one of the finest views of the Iron Bridge from a point known as the Rotunda. The edifice built there in the early 1790s had cast iron pillars and a domed roof. It also had a revolving seat with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. However, it had a short life, being demolished in 1804, possibly due to instability of the nearby limestone quarry face. An interpretation panel on the Rotunda shows such views in the 1790s.

Starting from the White Horse car park, this woodland walk follows the
spine of Lincoln Hill which was part of the Sabbath Walks or
Workmen’s Walks laid out in the late 18C by the Quaker ironmaster
Richard Reynolds. The walk encompasses the unique geology of the hill,
and visits the remains of structures associated with the Sabbath Walks, the
Alcove and the Rotunda which still offer wonderful panoramic views of
the Ironbridge Gorge and surrounding countryside.The route follows a 200-
year old old plateway, an even older sunken path known as Gypsy Lane,
before resuming a section of the Sabbath Walks in nearby Dale Coppice.
ª Accessibility: Boots are advisable all year round for frequently
muddy sections in this largely woodland walk.There are some
moderately steep ascents, one very steep descent of 150 steps from
the Rotunda, a step-through stile at the beginning of the walk and
a kissing gate on the exit from Lincoln Hill onto Church Road.

I'm working to create enough images to offer for sale at a local art walk weekend event. My new UV light box is working well. Print times are between 60 and 120 seconds!
This image was made using a c.1948 Linhof 5x7inch camera, a 210mm Schneider Symmar S/MC f/5.6 lens, and Ilford FP4+ film souped in D76.
Here is some language that I'm working with that may end up on a postcard I create just for these kinds of artists events.
Photographic Art
Working with the beauty found in light and form, my work attempts to communicate a sense of strength, serenity, and clarity. I enjoy using large and sometimes very old cameras and lenses as well as using a c.1874 platinotype print process to capture these properties. I love the way palladium works with visual highlights and overall print tonality to express my artistic vision.
Each print is unique and handcrafted. A few drops of light sensitive liquid are gently brushed onto artists’ paper. When dry, a large photographic film negative is placed in contact with the paper and exposed to ultraviolet light. A simple two step chemical process is then used to ensure the lasting qualities of a print. I strive to make my photographic images timeless and durable (lasting unchanged for more than 500 years).
Local Police offered a procession of Tribute to Bristol’s own Gary Powell on Friday, March 2, 2018. As Pastor Sheets pronounced to the family and friends of Gary Powell on Fri. March 2, 2018, “This is not a funeral - this is a celebration of the life of a man who left an impression on everyone he met.” Family, friends and all whom he met in his journey on Earth learned a life lesson from him. His wife Linda Powell and his children, grandchildren and stepchildren will attest that he was also a well-loved man. He was the local Coin Man who could teach you something you didn’t even know that you needed to know. He was retired from the Bristol Police Dept., and he loved his old police car so much that he bought it when the Town sold it, and would drive it in the Homecoming Parade. At the family luncheon held Friday afternoon, the family raised their glasses of his favorite diet Red Pop in a joyful toast of love for him. Just the Facts: Gary R. Powell, Nov. 30, 1940 to February 24, 2018. He passed away at The Maples in Goshen, IN. He owned the Interstate Coin Exchange in Bristol and was a retired Reserve Officer of the Bristol Police Department. Memorial contributions may be given to the Bristol Indiana Police Dept. Reserves.

"Welcome to spectacular Cape Borda Lightstation, built in 1858 to aid navigation in the busy shipping lanes to Port Adelaide. Cape Borda is the highest light above sea level in South Australia (155 metres) and the only square lighthouse in the state. It was built to assist in the defence of South Australia, and is equipped with a small signal cannon which is fired daily. Cape Borda had one of the last resident lighthouse keepers in the state and was destaffed in 1989. The Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) continues to conserve the lightstation
precinct and offers the lightkeeper cottages as accommodation to visitors. Tours of the Lightstation and museum are available to visitors daily. Access to the reading room, souvenirs and light refreshments are available between tours"

This is a photograph from the 4th annual running of the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs New Year Road Challenge which was held in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Sunday 10th January 2015 at 13:00. The race is organised by the local GAA club called Lough Lene Gaels. There were two races on offer today - a 10KM road race and a 5KM road race, fun run, and walk. This is one of the first road races in the midlands of the New Year 2016 and attracted over 300 runners, joggers and walkers. As this was a community orientated event families were especially welcome in the 5KM race. The race was organised to raise funding for the development of the GAA pitches for the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs. Overall this was a very successful event with a very large field of well over 300 participants in both races combined. The great local effort was exemplified by a very big local contingent from Collinstown and neighbouring areas. The 5KM race was an out and back course on the Collinstown to Fore Road. The 10KM was also on an out and back course with a deviation between 2KM and 7KM for the longer race. There were several tough hills but an equal amount of down-hill. For most participants both races were the proverbial race of two halves with the outward section down-hill and wind assisted with the return leg from Lough Lene to the finish (about 2.5KM in total) up hill and with a stiff sharp cold breeze in the face. Hot and cold refreshments were provided in the Lough Lene Inn Pub afterwards with prize-giving.
Timing and event management was provided by Red Tag Timing from Galway, Ireland. Their website is here [redtagtiming.com/] and will contain the results to today's race.

Collinstown is about 11 miles northeast of Mullingar in Co. Westmeath. The dominant geographical feature of the area and of both races is the beautiful Lough Lene a large freshwater lake close to the village. The water in the lake is internationally noted for the purity and clarity of its water and Lough Lene has regularly been awarded the blue flag status for water quality from the European Commission. It is well known amongst anglers. It covers approximately 430 hectares with water is measured to depths to 20m.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. The City of Chicago offers curb-side recycling to fewer than half of the households in Chicago. The remainder either have private haulers or have to use a city drop-off site like the above. The drop-off sites are few and far in between. I live in one of the more popular neighborhoods in Chicago (Lakeview) yet the closest site to me is 10 minutes by car (impossible to reach with your recyclables by foot). Once a week or so, I load up my recyclables into my car and make the effort to recycle by taking them here. And I'm faced with this: an over-run, full dumpster. This is not the first time this has happened, it was full about 3 weeks ago when i went as well, as well as other times in the past.
Whomever is managing this project is failing miserably.
If you want to cut the city budget, cut them. Someone else can clearly do the job better.
We offer stewardship projects to community groups and individuals once a month, usually on a Saturday.
