Learning center offers Native American students new technology

BAPCHULE — There was only one member of St. Peter Mission School community who was unsure about the name of the new Joe Garagiola Learning Center — Joe Garagiola himself.
“Joe fussed about it,” Franciscan Sister Martha Carpenter said. “He said, ‘Nothing is named after me except my oldest son.’”
Garagiola — a former Major League Baseball player who’s known as “Awesome Fox” by the school community — eventually agreed on the condition that “Where every child is a gift” be included in the center’s name.
More than 300 people were on hand for the Nov. 2 blessing of the new facility. Led by Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, the community gathered for prayer and thanksgiving.
“This center is a real homerun, Joe,” the bishop said during the blessing ceremony.
St. Peter students joined in thanking Garagiola, singing “This Man is Our Joe” to the melody of Woody Guthrie’s classic “This Land is Your Land.”
But the former ball player wasn’t the only one honored.
“We have never said as often as we should how thankful we are for the Franciscan sisters,” said Fr. Edward Meulmans, a retired priest who serves Native American missions in the diocese.
He said the students pick up the Franciscans’ loving spirit of service when they come to the school. The sisters create an environment that marries prayer with education, he said.
“The learning center, along with the church, will be an important building for us for years to come,” Fr. Meulmans said.
The five-year project replaced the school’s tiny library with the 5,125-square-foot learning center featuring a lab with 30 computers and a 12,000-volume library.

Fish Creek offers a unique opportunity to view and photograph Alaskan Brown (Grizzlies) and Black bears. The bears come here to feed on the chum and pink salmon which spawn in the creek. From July to September, the salmon run provides an extensive food supply for the bears, gulls and bald eagles.
The U.S. Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are committed to providing a safe environment for bears and people. As bears are wild and unpredictable, please keep your distance. Ranger interpretive programs are given in the evenings during July and August.
Caution: Bears frequently cross the road, coming down from steep slopes to fish for salmon. To reduce disturbances to the bears, do not park or leave your car unattended on the side of the road throughtout the entire area. Parking is permitted in an area 200 feet north of the wildlife observation platform.
The road begins by following the Salmon River northward through a deep valley flanked by steep mountains. After 7.6 kilometers, the road crosses Fish Creek, which is known for supporting the largest run of chum salmon in the world. Specimens weighing 35 pounds and more have been recorded, and the clear waters of the creek make for ideal viewing. The run begins in late July. The spawning salmon also attract the coastal brown bear, a larger relative of the grizzly. This magnificent animal is the lord of its domain. Do not approach, taunt, or attempt to feed it! Enjoy the bears only from the safety of your car.

Russian cuisine offers really tasty and filling dishes, but sometimes foreigners find them not so easy to eat as Russian Chocolate. Therefore, everybody agrees on the great variety of delicious Russian sweets: пирожные (pastries), печение (biscuits), торт (cakes), конфети (candy), вафли (wafel). In Russian supermarkets there are usually two big departments. One is dedicated mainly to handcrafted bakery products, pastries and biscuits and the other one to sweets, candy and wafers.
The most famous confectionery factories in Russia are Moscow’s Красный октябрь (Krasny oktyabr) and Saint Petersburg’s Фабрика имени Н. К. Крупской (Fabrika imeni N. K. Krupskoi).
Фабрика имени Н. К. Крупской (Fabrika imeni N. K. Krupskoi) is the main confectionery factory in Saint Petersburg and it was established in 1938. This is the first chocolate and candy factory created in the Soviet Union and one of the most popular factory in Russia specialized in chocolate production. It was named after Lenin’s wife Nadezhda Krupskaya and despite the hard times it continued to work even during World War II and the blockade of Leningrad.
The company invested in advanced technology, modern equipment and new types of products. In 1988 the factory became independent from the government and self-financed its own business. They bought new equipment and renewed and increased their assortment to 120 different kinds of chocolate and candy, supplied to Finland Norway and U.S. as well. The factory increase rapidly for the high quality it was able to provide. They installed a new chocolate refinement and processing line made by the Swiss Buler firm that raised the quality of the chocolate.
In 1995 the factory received the Candy Kettle Award, the most prestigious international prize of European confectioners, and from that time on the company received many other quality awards.
So, if you love chocolate and candy or if you are invited over for dinner and you’re looking for something to bring or just for a sweet souvenir to bring home from Saint Petersburg I suggest you pay a visit to Krupskoi’s shops. They are spread all over the city centre; there’s one in Gostiniy Dvor on Nevsky prospekt and one in ulitsa Sadovaya 35, really close to Liden & Denz.
In Krupskoi’s shops you will find a wide range of different kinds of sweets to try. The most popular candy are мишка на севере (mishka na severe), северная аврора (severnaya avrora), ленинградские (leningradskie), столичные звезды (stolichnye zvezdy) and the Cameo’s трюфелы экстра (tryufely ekstra). Then I suggest you try the candy bars Oсобый (Osobiy) and Тройка (Troyka) and chose between fresh pastries and biscuits. Besides in the shops there is a nice selection of teas too.
Eventually you can’t miss the famous Алёнка (Alenka) chocolate bars and candy by “Krasny oktyabr”, and personally I recommend you try Бабаевский (Babaevsky)’s chocolate bar with almond and orange.
So now you are ready to enjoy Russian delicacies! And remember that there’s always room for chocolate and sweets…and they are always very welcome!

The Ford Thunderbird evolved rapidly following its introduction for 1955. From the initial two-seat boulevardier, it transformed into the four-seat, second-generation car with architectural, squared-off styling. By the third generation, spanning 1961–1963, the Thunderbird was all Space Age sleekness, from its pointed nose—which earned it the “Bullet Bird” nickname—to the “afterburner” taillights. This so-called personal luxury car was large, powerful, and offered a dazzling range of standard and available features. No one, however, would have mistaken it for a true sports car.
The Sports Roadster, introduced for 1962, was Ford’s way of bringing back the spirit of the first Thunderbirds. Its most notable feature was a removable fiberglass tonneau cover fitted over the rear seats, providing a convincing two-seat look, while allowing four-seat functionality, should the need arise. The model was further distinguished by Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels and special badging. Priced at a formidable $5,439 for 1962, the Sports Roadster was never destined for high sales volumes—indeed, the car offered here is one of only 120 produced for 1962.
The 1962 Thunderbird Sports Roadster features the desirable “M-Code” by Ford’s desirable “M-Code” 390-cubic-inch V-8 engine with three two-barrel carburetors and higher compression ratio. It also bears the distinction of having been restored by marque specialist Jerry Capizzi in the early 1990s. Soon after completion, the car was campaigned at shows across the country and successfully achieved First Place and Larry Seyfarth Best of Show at the 1993 Vintage Thunderbird Club International Convention, First Place Junior at the 1994 Antique Automobile Club of America Central Division National, First Place Senior at the 1994 VTCI National Convention, First Place Senior at the 1993 AACA Eastern National Fall Meet, First Place and Preservation Award at the 1995 AACA Grand National, First Place Senior at the 1996 AACA Grand National, and a Class Award at the 1999 Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance.
The quality of the restoration is undeniable as this award-winning Raven Black over Red leather Thunderbird still presents in show-contending condition 30 years on. It is accompanied by an owner’s kit, multiple plaques and trophies, and a restoration photo album. In preparation for the sale, the owner had the vehicle inspected to resolve any issues and improve functionality. This included minor cosmetic work and servicing the fuel system, which involved rebuilding the carburetors to factory specification. An invoice on file details the work.
Any third-generation Thunderbird makes a strong impression, with many considering its styling to be the finest ever applied to the long-running Ford model. This 1962 “M-Code” Sports Roadster adds incredible rarity and an award-winning, well-maintained restoration to the mix, placing it at the very pinnacle of Thunderbird desirability.

which was offered from 1957 to 1959 in four different variations.
The body of the 35-S II was quite similar to the Wide S.
The first version was the only one of the serie supplied with a self timer, which was situtated under the distance meter window. Due to this most noticable feature the first version, is easy to pick out.

The second version, that was built as of 1958, had no self timer and was supplied with the G Zuiko 1:1,8 f = 4,2 cm. On the front below the winding lever, the camera was marked with a large S.
As a variation the second version was supplied with a Zuiko 1:2 f = 4,2 cm or a E. Zuiko 1:2,8 f = 4,8 cm.
Both variations had no S marked on the front. All variations had a Copal-MXL B, 1 to 500 shutter.
All variations were engraved with: OLYMPUS 35-S
The 35 S II was also produced for the north american trader Sears and sold in the USA.

This guy offered people access to climb the minaret of the southern iwan. The view would have been spectacular, but as usual I had already lost my group. Traveling in an organised tour is the situation in which to take pictures, most people just look around a bit, take a picture with the spouse blocking the view and move on. I could spend all day here, and then maybe another. The more you look around the more you see... In fact, these photos, or any photos of architecture such as this can never do it justice, but they help me remember...

This is a photograph from the Clane and Rathcoffey Parishes annual 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were held in Clane village, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 19th of October at 14:30. This year's event follows on from the very successful staging last year (see link to photographs below). The organisers offer both a 5km and 10km race and the event provides an opportunity for runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities to take part in the event. The 5KM has a particular emphasis on family entrants. There was a wonderful atmosphere around the Village as both races started and finished on the main street outside the parish hall. The directly out-and-back routes provided an opportunity for a fast time on a good course and made for a great finish line atmosphere as runners, joggers, and walkers crossed the line. Great praise must be extended to the whole organising committee who organised a very efficiently run event. The events provide some runners with an opportunity to have a final race effort session in the week leading up to the Dublin City Marathon.

Overall Race Summary and Logistics
Participants: There were about 200 competitors combined in the two events.
Weather: The weather was very changeable for all of the events. During the 10KM race there was a heavy rain shower around the area of the 6KM mark but this didn't actually fall in the town. There was a strong headwind against competitors in the 10KM on the return part of the course between 6KM and 8KM.
Race Course:
This summary includes information on both the 5KM and 10KM races.
Both races start in the same place - just outside the Race HQ on the main street of the town. The races then proceed north eastwards out the Dublin Road towards Straffan and Celbridge. Just after 400 meters the races take a left up a small local road and proceeds along this road until it takes a tight left hand turn at the end of the lane at Capdoo goo.gl/maps/aPo26 (Google Streetview). The route proceeds until it shortly meets the Clane-Kilcock Road - College Road R407 goo.gl/maps/SGcPa. Both races will divert into Clane Business and Industrial Park goo.gl/maps/EQMf0 . The 5KM turns around and returns on the same route to the finish. However the 10KM race continues (taking a left) back onto College Road. Soon afterwards it passes the famous entrance to Clongowes Wood College on the right the race takes the next left (goo.gl/maps/zUhrJ) and brings runners onto the road known locally as the 'Long Road' (R408 Between Rathcoffey and Prosperous) at this point goo.gl/maps/fHKr2. The race proceeds northward until runners meet the Clane Kilcock Road once again. With the exception of the partial run into the Industrial Estate the race returns to the finish on the main street in Clane via the same route as the outward part of the route.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Critical Crisis Definition:
A crisis is a turning point or decisive moment in events where you as a young adult or as a family member have met a crossroad. Typically, it is the moment from which an imminent critical trauma may go on to death or recovery. More loosely, it is a term meaning 'a testing time' or 'emergency event'. This crossroad is a crucial, decisive point or situation where a turning point, or an emotionally stressful event or traumatic change in a person's life will be taking place. A Critical situation you or a loved one is either in or verging on a state of crisis or emergency.
The Young Adult Crisis Hotline offers immediate emotional support by telephone volunteers trained to help young adults who may be having relational problems, addictions, have an eating disorder, are suicidal, in emotional distress, or in need of reassurance. Services are free, confidential, and anonymous. Professionally trained volunteers handle incoming calls using active, caring, and nonjudgmental listening and problem-solving skills. All calls are free, confidential and anonymous.
Young Adults in crisis... they're everywhere. Faced with physical and emotional abuse, drugs, peer pressure and the like, many today just don't have the resources or support to handle the pressure.

This is a photograph from the 3rd annual running of The Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs New Year Road Challenge which was held in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Sunday 11th January 2015 at 13:00. There were two races on offer today - a 10KM road race and a 5KM road race, fun run, and walk. This is one of the first road races in the midlands of the New Year 2015. As this was a community orientated event families were especially welcome in the 5KM race. The race was organised to raise funding for the development of the GAA pitches for the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs. Overall this was a very successful event with a very large field of well over 300 participants in both races combined. The great local effort was exemplified by a very big local contingent from Collinstown and neighbouring areas.
The 5KM race was an out and back course on the Collinstown to Fore Road. The 10KM was also on an out and back course with a deviation between 2KM and 7KM for the longer race. There were several tough hills but an equal amount of down-hill. There was a bitter cold wind on the backs of participants of the 10KM for the first half of the race which unfortunately turned to become a headwind for the return stretch to the finish. The turn around on the course for the 10KM came at Doyle's Pub [goo.gl/maps/WxPSy - Google Streetview] at Glenidan. Refreshments were served afterwards in the Lough Lene Inn where the prize ceremony was also held.

Can I use these photographs directly from Flickr on my social media account(s)?
Yes - of course you can! Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile, tablet, or desktop device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.
We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.
This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.
I want to download these pictures to my computer or device?
You can download the photographic image here direct to your computer or device. This version is the low resolution web-quality image. How to download will vary slight from device to device and from browser to browser. However - look for a symbol with three dots 'ooo' or the link to 'View/Download' all sizes. When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.
I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?
If you just need these photographs for online usage then they can be used directly once you respect their Creative Commons license and provide a link back to our Flickr set if you use them. For offline usage and printing all of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution.
Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.
In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - If you are using the photographs online all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort and time. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc. If you are using the photographs in newspapers or magazines we ask that you mention where the original photograph came from.
I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?
Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
