December 27, 2018 - "Rising over 700m above the Jordan Valley, Mount Nebo offers spectacular views of the Promised Land as seen by Moses. On the platform at the summit is a modern sculpture by an Italian artist representing Moses' staff and Jesus' words in John 3: "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."
Elements of a triple-apse Byzantine basilica were uncovered by archaeologists in the 1930s, and have been incorporated into the structure of the modern church building, known as the Memorial Church of Moses. The modern additions to the church are very simple, consisting of little more than a shelter over the fascinating excavations and ancient mosaic floors.
Just inside the entrance to the left is the excavated Old Baptistery, which has one of the most interesting ancient mosaics in Jordan. The baptistery and the mosaic can be precisely dated to August 531 thanks to a Greek inscription, which also names the three workers who created it and the bishop at the time (Elias).
The Old Baptistery mosaic is in remarkably pristine condition because another one was laid over it just a few decades later in 597. The underlying mosaic remained hidden for nearly 1,400 years until it was discovered in 1976 when the one on top was removed for restoration (it now hangs on a wall).
The mosaic of 531 is a large square divided into four strips of scenes of men and animals, surrounded by a chain-style border. The top two sections depict fierce hunting scenes: a shepherd fighting a lion, a soldier fighting a lioness, and two horseback hunters defeating a bear and wild boar.
The lower scenes are pastoral but with a touch of the exotic: a shepherd watching his goat and sheep graze in the shade of trees; an ostrich on a leash held by a dark-skinned man; and a boy holding the leashes of a zebra and a spotted animal that looks very much like a camel but might be intended to represent a giraffe.
There are more mosaics in the nave and side aisles of the church, including some fragments of the 597 mosaic pavement. The oldest mosaic in the church is a braided cross displayed on the south wall.
Also hanging here are mosaics of animals from the Church of George in Mukhayyat. One of these is from 536 and has an inscription that some believe is the earliest example of Arabic script in Jordan (others argue it is old Aramaic).
In the far right-hand corner of the church is the New Baptistery (597 AD), which was previously a funerary chapel. It includes a small mosaic originally from the threshold bearing the greeting, "Peace to all."
Next to the New Baptistry, a lovely mosaic cross from the original 4th-century church stands on a modern altar in its original location. A photograph of the Pope praying at the same altar is proudly displayed.
Next to the exit door is the Theotokos Chapel, added in the 7th century where three rooms of the monastery previously stood. Its apse has a mosaic of a square object that may be a ciborium (vessel for the Eucharist) or altar canopy, accompanied by bulls and gazelles. Local Police offered a procession of Tribute to Bristol’s own Gary Powell on Friday, March 2, 2018. As Pastor Sheets pronounced to the family and friends of Gary Powell on Fri. March 2, 2018, “This is not a funeral - this is a celebration of the life of a man who left an impression on everyone he met.” Family, friends and all whom he met in his journey on Earth learned a life lesson from him. His wife Linda Powell and his children, grandchildren and stepchildren will attest that he was also a well-loved man. He was the local Coin Man who could teach you something you didn’t even know that you needed to know. He was retired from the Bristol Police Dept., and he loved his old police car so much that he bought it when the Town sold it, and would drive it in the Homecoming Parade. At the family luncheon held Friday afternoon, the family raised their glasses of his favorite diet Red Pop in a joyful toast of love for him. Just the Facts: Gary R. Powell, Nov. 30, 1940 to February 24, 2018. He passed away at The Maples in Goshen, IN. He owned the Interstate Coin Exchange in Bristol and was a retired Reserve Officer of the Bristol Police Department. Memorial contributions may be given to the Bristol Indiana Police Dept. Reserves.

Iroquois Memorial Hospital had good news to offer at the Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon on Thursday, October 15. This good news not only came in the form of new digital technology, but also with the signing of a new doctor.
Steve Leurck, IMH President, announced that Dr. Emily Fernandez would be joining the IMH team.
Dr. Emily Fernandez is currently Chief Resident in Texas, but will begin her practice at IMH in August of 2010. Fernandez will be a family practitioner with obstetrics. She is a wife and mother of four.
The luncheon also served to say good-bye to current Chair of Community Benefits, Carolyn Cottrell. This was Cottrell’s final luncheon as Chair of Community Benefits. She is retiring from the position after fourteen years of service.
Speakers included Linda Cohen of GE, Dr. John Tricou, Director of Radiology at IMH, Dr. Rebecca Salvani, Carol Dexter, RN, and Becy Stark, RN. Cohen discussed the benefits of new digital technology in screening for breast cancer. However, all shared an overall theme that early detection and screening is the key to women’s healthcare.

This is a photograph from the Clane and Rathcoffey Parishes annual 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were held in Clane village, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 19th of October at 14:30. This year's event follows on from the very successful staging last year (see link to photographs below). The organisers offer both a 5km and 10km race and the event provides an opportunity for runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities to take part in the event. The 5KM has a particular emphasis on family entrants. There was a wonderful atmosphere around the Village as both races started and finished on the main street outside the parish hall. The directly out-and-back routes provided an opportunity for a fast time on a good course and made for a great finish line atmosphere as runners, joggers, and walkers crossed the line. Great praise must be extended to the whole organising committee who organised a very efficiently run event. The events provide some runners with an opportunity to have a final race effort session in the week leading up to the Dublin City Marathon.

Overall Race Summary and Logistics
Participants: There were about 200 competitors combined in the two events.
Weather: The weather was very changeable for all of the events. During the 10KM race there was a heavy rain shower around the area of the 6KM mark but this didn't actually fall in the town. There was a strong headwind against competitors in the 10KM on the return part of the course between 6KM and 8KM.
Race Course:
This summary includes information on both the 5KM and 10KM races.
Both races start in the same place - just outside the Race HQ on the main street of the town. The races then proceed north eastwards out the Dublin Road towards Straffan and Celbridge. Just after 400 meters the races take a left up a small local road and proceeds along this road until it takes a tight left hand turn at the end of the lane at Capdoo goo.gl/maps/aPo26 (Google Streetview). The route proceeds until it shortly meets the Clane-Kilcock Road - College Road R407 goo.gl/maps/SGcPa. Both races will divert into Clane Business and Industrial Park goo.gl/maps/EQMf0 . The 5KM turns around and returns on the same route to the finish. However the 10KM race continues (taking a left) back onto College Road. Soon afterwards it passes the famous entrance to Clongowes Wood College on the right the race takes the next left (goo.gl/maps/zUhrJ) and brings runners onto the road known locally as the 'Long Road' (R408 Between Rathcoffey and Prosperous) at this point goo.gl/maps/fHKr2. The race proceeds northward until runners meet the Clane Kilcock Road once again. With the exception of the partial run into the Industrial Estate the race returns to the finish on the main street in Clane via the same route as the outward part of the route.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Nectanebo II was only able to complete the decoration of the chapel for Osiris Hemag that stood on the roof of the temple. This aspect of the god represents a key moment in the liturgical transformation of osiris as Behbeit el Hagat, and the chapel was probably viewed as a priority in the ritual functioning of the temple.

The reief itself is unfinished - for example, the god's scepter and ankh are missing from the hands in the right half of the block. Learning center offers Native American students new technology

BAPCHULE — There was only one member of St. Peter Mission School community who was unsure about the name of the new Joe Garagiola Learning Center — Joe Garagiola himself.
“Joe fussed about it,” Franciscan Sister Martha Carpenter said. “He said, ‘Nothing is named after me except my oldest son.’”
Garagiola — a former Major League Baseball player who’s known as “Awesome Fox” by the school community — eventually agreed on the condition that “Where every child is a gift” be included in the center’s name.
More than 300 people were on hand for the Nov. 2 blessing of the new facility. Led by Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, the community gathered for prayer and thanksgiving.
“This center is a real homerun, Joe,” the bishop said during the blessing ceremony.
St. Peter students joined in thanking Garagiola, singing “This Man is Our Joe” to the melody of Woody Guthrie’s classic “This Land is Your Land.”
But the former ball player wasn’t the only one honored.
“We have never said as often as we should how thankful we are for the Franciscan sisters,” said Fr. Edward Meulmans, a retired priest who serves Native American missions in the diocese.
He said the students pick up the Franciscans’ loving spirit of service when they come to the school. The sisters create an environment that marries prayer with education, he said.
“The learning center, along with the church, will be an important building for us for years to come,” Fr. Meulmans said.
The five-year project replaced the school’s tiny library with the 5,125-square-foot learning center featuring a lab with 30 computers and a 12,000-volume library.
