This is a photograph from the Clane and Rathcoffey Parishes annual 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were held in Clane village, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 19th of October at 14:30. This year's event follows on from the very successful staging last year (see link to photographs below). The organisers offer both a 5km and 10km race and the event provides an opportunity for runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities to take part in the event. The 5KM has a particular emphasis on family entrants. There was a wonderful atmosphere around the Village as both races started and finished on the main street outside the parish hall. The directly out-and-back routes provided an opportunity for a fast time on a good course and made for a great finish line atmosphere as runners, joggers, and walkers crossed the line. Great praise must be extended to the whole organising committee who organised a very efficiently run event. The events provide some runners with an opportunity to have a final race effort session in the week leading up to the Dublin City Marathon.

Overall Race Summary and Logistics
Participants: There were about 200 competitors combined in the two events.
Weather: The weather was very changeable for all of the events. During the 10KM race there was a heavy rain shower around the area of the 6KM mark but this didn't actually fall in the town. There was a strong headwind against competitors in the 10KM on the return part of the course between 6KM and 8KM.
Race Course:
This summary includes information on both the 5KM and 10KM races.
Both races start in the same place - just outside the Race HQ on the main street of the town. The races then proceed north eastwards out the Dublin Road towards Straffan and Celbridge. Just after 400 meters the races take a left up a small local road and proceeds along this road until it takes a tight left hand turn at the end of the lane at Capdoo goo.gl/maps/aPo26 (Google Streetview). The route proceeds until it shortly meets the Clane-Kilcock Road - College Road R407 goo.gl/maps/SGcPa. Both races will divert into Clane Business and Industrial Park goo.gl/maps/EQMf0 . The 5KM turns around and returns on the same route to the finish. However the 10KM race continues (taking a left) back onto College Road. Soon afterwards it passes the famous entrance to Clongowes Wood College on the right the race takes the next left (goo.gl/maps/zUhrJ) and brings runners onto the road known locally as the 'Long Road' (R408 Between Rathcoffey and Prosperous) at this point goo.gl/maps/fHKr2. The race proceeds northward until runners meet the Clane Kilcock Road once again. With the exception of the partial run into the Industrial Estate the race returns to the finish on the main street in Clane via the same route as the outward part of the route.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Geronimo
1829-1909
Known to his tribe as Goyathlay, meaning "One Who Yawns". Born in present day New Mexico at the headwaters of the Gila River, Geronimo was the last warrior fighting for the Chiricahua Apache. He became famous for standing against the U.S. Government & for holding out the longest. He was a spiritual leader & medicine man. Geronimo final surrender in 1886 was the last significant Apache guerrilla action in the U.S., his group consisted of only 16 warriors, 12 women, & six Children.
Mangas Colorades
1797-1862
A Chiricahua Chief & natural leader because of his intelligence & size. Unusually tall, he was over six feet in height. Mangas united the Apache tribes, led them in a successful war of revenge & cleared the New Mexico area of white settlers. After the Americans started to occupy the region, searching for gold, Mangas tried several peaceful ways to get the whites out of his land. On one occasion, miners tied him to a tree & lashed him nearly to death before releasing him, he was killed by Union soldiers at Fort McLane. One soldier took his scalp, another boiled his flesh from his head, & sold the skull to a phrenologist.
Loren
1840s-1889
Lozen was the younger sister of the mighty Apache war leader Victorio, & the most famous of the Apache War Women. Victorio is quoted as saying, Loren is my right hand...strong as a man, braver than most, & cunning in strategy, Loren is a shield to her people." Loren was quite unlike her counterpart, Dahteste. Loren had no concern for her appearance &, even though she is an several famous photos of Geronimo with his warriors, there is nothing to indicate that she is a woman. She was manly in her appearance, dressed like a man, lived & fought like a man. She devoted her life to the service of her people.
Cochise
1800s-1874
Shi-ka-she was a tall man, six feet, with broad shoulders & a commanding appearance. He never met a man his equal with a lance, & like Crazy Horse, was never photographed. Many have said that he was the most powerful Apache leader in history. At his death, it was reported that his people wailed loudly for more than a day. After his death, the Government broke the historic treaty made with Cochise & in 1876 moved the Chiricahua from the ancient mountain homeland to the dry Arizona desert. "Nobody wants peace more than I do. Why shut me on a reservation? We will make peace; we will keep it faithfully. But let us go around free as Americans do. Let is go wherever we please".
Victoria
1825-1880
A Chiricahua Chief of the Warm Springs Apache. When his people were removed from their ancestral home to the desolate reservation of San Carlos, Arizona, Victorio bolted for Mexico with a group of followers. He & his people terrorized the border country with continual raids. Victorio always managed to elude his pursuers. In October 1880, Victorio died at a place called Tres Castillos while waiting for a small raiding party to acquire ammunition they needed. Victorio was taken by surprise when Genral Joaquin Terrazas & his army attacked Victorio & his band of 78 Apache. His descendants reside on the Mescalero Apache Reservation.
Nana
1810-1900s
Nana was married to Geronimo's sister. After Victorio's death at the Tres Castillos massacre in 1880, it was Nana who guided the remians of the tribe into safety. For more than two months Nana eluded 1400 troops in a thousand-mile campaign with only 40 warriors. Even at an old age & almost with a crippled leg, Nana could out-ride & out-last any warrior in the saddle. He showed no signs of weakness, & challenged any white man that stood in his way. It is said that to revenge of Victorio's death Nana was responsible for killing more white men than Victorio had done in his lifetime. Nana died of old age, & lived his last years in reservation.

Call me Snake offers an optimistic provocation – ‘imagine what could be here’ by Judy Millar. On a walk into the city October 3, 2015 Christchurch New Zealand.
The work is comprised of vibrant graphics of Millar’s looped paintings, which are adhered to five intersecting flat planes, and draws inspiration from the forms found in pop-up books. The colourful piece will add a dramatic and rhythmic counterpoint to the city’s current urban landscape — a mix of flattened sites, construction zones and defiant buildings that have stood through the quakes. The work employs theatricality, playfulness and visual trickery, whereby the viewer is unsure about the work’s flatness or three-dimensionality; and it has been designed to offer a different perspective from each angle. The bright colours interrupt the grey of the work’s surrounds, and as buildings pop up around it,
SCAPE 8, New Intimacies curated by Rob Garrett was a contemporary art event which mixed new artworks with existing legacy pieces, an education programme, and a public programme of events. The SCAPE 8 artworks were located around central Christchurch and linked via a public art walkway. All aspects of SCAPE 8 were free-to-view.
The title for the 2015 Biennial – New Intimacies – came from the idea that visually striking and emotionally engaging public art works can create new connections between people and places. Under the main theme of New Intimacies there are three other themes that artists responded to: Sight-Lines, Inner Depths and Shared Strengths.

This is a photograph from the 4th and final round of the 2015 Mullingar Road League which was held in Belvedere House and Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 27th May 2015 at 20:00. The weather was perfect for running and racing again and gave bright sunshine with some breeze. The weather conditions were favourable for runners this evening. As this was the final night of a very successful league there were many category prizes up for grabs with runners having to ensure they ran their races to gain the required finish times for the overall calculations. There was a great atmosphere at the finish as spectators cheered on the runners. This year's 5KM is ran on a modified route based on the route from the last couple of years. The final 1KM is within the Belvedere Gardens bringing runners down to the lakeside for a second time and finishing along the aptly named Stream Of Life. The route modification means that the race offers a slightly faster route than the hill finish of previous years. In the prize giving and awards in Belvedere House Cafe there were refreshments served for runners and this brought the curtain down on the Road League for 2015.
The race is promoted by Mullingar Harriers for the Pat Finnerty Memorial Cup. Competitors need to run 3 races out of the 4 races in May (any order) to be considered in the overall placing in categories at the conclusion of the league. Runners can also choose to just run one race without being considered for the overall league placings. Over 330 people took part in tonight's event bring the total from the four nights to so far to well over 1,400 runners. As with all of the previous weeks the new finish area provided a nice space for runners to stay around and chat in the evening sunshine. The Mullingar Road League 2015 is now over but has continued successfully and looks to add to the success in the history of this great series. The "Road League" is something of a misnomer but is an indication of the League's origins on the roads around Ladestown Mullingar prior to it's move into Belvedere in 2008. The Road League is the envy of many other races in the country as the Belvedere locations offers a completely traffic free 5KM route.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

Fort Mott State Park is located on the Delaware River in Pennsville, Salem County, New Jersey. Originally built as part of the federal government’s late 19th-century plan to defend the Delaware River, today Fort Mott State Park offers a unique blend of historical, cultural and recreational activities for visitors.
The land where Fort Mott State Park now stands was purchased in the 1830s by the United States government as the future site of a fortification. Originally called “The Battery at Finn’s Point”, the proposed fortification was one of a three-fort plan to protect growing industries and shipping along the Delaware River. Construction began in 1872 but was halted in 1876 due to a lack of funding. Only two-gun emplacements and several magazines were completed.
With advancements in military technology made during and after the American Civil War (1862-1865), the United States’ defenses were dangerously inadequate. In 1885, President Grover Cleveland, at the request of Congress, appointed the Endicott board, named after its chairman Secretary of War William Endicott, to study the existing coastal defenses and develop a coastal defense plan for the United States. The main defensive concept for the Delaware River was the dispersion of armaments into three separate fortifications: a new fortification in New Jersey, a new fortification in Delaware (Fort DuPont) and upgrades to the existing fortification (Fort Delaware) on Pea Patch Island located between New Jersey and Delaware in the middle of the Delaware River.
In New Jersey, the original plan for the Battery at Finn’s Point was abandoned and construction of new fortifications began in 1896. Large caliber weapons, three 10-inch and three 12-inch guns, were installed on disappearing carriages. These guns had an effective range of seven to eight miles and shot projectiles that weighed 600 and 1,000 pounds, respectively. Two batteries, each with 5-inch rapid fire guns, and one battery with two 3-inch rapid fire guns, were also part of the defenses. When completed, Fort Mott contained cutting-edge military technology.
This fortification was officially renamed Fort Mott on December 16, 1897 to honor Major General Gershom Mott, a decorated veteran of the Mexican–American and Civil Wars.
Military Life
Fort Mott was a self-contained military community. The post had over 30 buildings, including two large barracks, non-commissioned and officer’s housing, a hospital, a post exchange, a library, a guard house, a stable, a YMCA, and a school for the soldiers’ children. The Delaware River served as the main transportation infrastructure for Fort Mott with munitions, supplies and construction materials arriving at the fort by barge.
Sports activities were an important part of life for a soldier stationed at Fort Mott. Over the years, Fort Mott hosted baseball teams, a football team, and a basketball team; for officers there was a clay tennis court. While off duty, the soldiers would hunt in the local marshes for waterfowl and muskrats.
For married soldiers and officers, limited housing was available on post with additional options located just off post on Fort Mott Road. Some of these houses still exist on the northern side of the Parade Ground and on private property nearby. Most families of army personnel stationed at Fort Mott led a quiet and secluded life. Many of the families tended gardens and kept livestock to pass the time. The nearby towns of Salem and Delaware City also provided an escape from life on the army post.
End of an Era
Troops were regularly stationed at Fort Mott from 1897 to 1922. With the construction of Fort Saulsbury near Milford, Delaware shortly before World War I, the technology at Fort Mott was deemed obsolete. From 1922 to 1943 the federal government only maintained a caretaking detachment at the Fort. Towards the end of that period, Fort Mott’s guns were dismantled and moved to other locations or cut up for scrap. Fort Mott was declared “surplus property” in 1943. In 1947, the State of New Jersey purchased Fort Mott as a historic site and opened it to the public on June 24, 1951.

As some of you know, I love shooting wildlife with my trusty, light, gorgeously-sharp Nikon 300mm f/4D IF-ED AF-S and Nikon 1.4TCII. Although I love this combo for all that it offers on a budget, I was itching for a little more reach and possibly VR.
Tamron and Sigma were offering a lot of reach for a great price, but as good as these lenses seemed to perform according to users, I just wasn't terribly tempted. I wasn't in love with the bokeh on the Sigmas, nor the weight, nor the questionable reliability I've experienced in the past with Sigma super-zooms. I know that times are changing and Sigma has been on fire as of late, but I still see people having AF issues with their "Art" series lenses here and there. What hope does a super-telephoto lens have if some copies of primes front/back-focus? Tamron's first generation 150-600mm super-zoom was impressive when it was announced and the price was right, but,... after giving it a try, I didn't think it would make me happier than the 300mm f/4D and TC did, so I held out.
A couple months ago Tamron announced the new and improved 150-600mm G2. Tamron made many improvements with this lens and that's when I thought that just maybe I was ready to buy. I think I may have added that lens to my B&H cart like five times in a span of two weeks. I even entered my card info and was about to hit "Subit Order", but stopped myself at the last second and hit "X". :P I still wasn't sure whether to go with the shorter Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR, or the Tamron G2.
The Tamron offered more reach; 50mm less at the wide end and 100mm more at the long end. They also added customizable features as far as AF tuning and VR go. The Nikon offered a constant aperture of f/5.6 all the way to 500mm, I liked the bokeh a little more, it had 4.5 stops of VR (Tamron rates the G2 at 4.5 stops as well) and it was Nikon-brand, which meant that future compatibility was a no-brainer. They both cost about the same, so price was not a consideration.
On paper the Tamron made far more sense. How can you go wrong with more reach, more options, similar optical quality and same price??? Yet I still couldn't buy it, not knowing how it felt in my hands compared to the Nikon. I decided to go down to Sammy's Camera and try them both out with my D750.
Of course it was raining, so going outside with them wasn't an option. I aimed both lenses at stationary cars outside, aimed them at stuff inside the store, well-lit corners, dim corners, etc. The Tamron was quite good, nothing to complain about considering I was shooting both at 1/125s hand-held, but when I pulled up the Nikon images on my play-back screen, I was kind of blown away. I wasn't expecting that from a super-zoom. The images were sharp, detailed and nailed focus. Although the Tamron was quicker to acquire focus, it did seem to miss a couple of times in bad light. I don't think it needed AF fine tuning, because in good light it seemed to nail focus despite some camera-shake from me.
To be fair, I was shooting the Tamron at 600mm wide open and the Nikon at 500mm wide open. The Tamron was at f/6.3 and Nikon was at f/5.6, so it was getting less reach and more light than the Tamron. I know some might say I should have shot both the Tamron and Nikon at 500mm, but in my mind if 600mm on the Tamron didn't perform to my expectations, what's the point in buying the extra reach if I'm not going to be happy with it? I simply used both lenses the way I planned to use them all the time, which was at their maximum focal length and wide open.
The Nikon VR was very effective. Tamron had three or four VR options, I made sure to try at least two of them, but wasn't as impressed by their effectiveness at 600mm and 1/125s. Maybe if the Nikon had gone to 600mm, it also wouldn't have done so well, but,... there was just something about the Nikon that made me go "wow". It wowed me so much in fact, that although I planned on buying it through B&H, I decided that I had to have this particular copy of it then and there. It just performed so well with zero AF fine tuning! It was spot-on at every focal length. Hearing about copy variation struck fear in me that if I had bought it online, maybe a different copy wouldn't perform the same way optically.
I'd like to say that the Tamron G2 is quite impressive for the price and what it offers. It seems like a really great lens, and I'm sure it would have performed better if I had been shooting it at 1/2000s in good light. Then again, so would the Nikon under the same circumstances! Whether you go with one or the other, I don't think you can make a bad decision. They're both awesome offerings. 2016 was a very good year for wildlife photogs on a budget. I never in a million years thought I'd love a super-zoom for under $1,400.00 this much!
You're probably wondering how it compares to the 300mm f/4D and 1.4TCII. Prepare to be shocked...... the Nikon 200-500mm matches (if not surpasses by a tiny margin) the 300mm f/4D and TC at 420mm, especially in center sharpness and detail. Well, what about the 300mm f/4D at 300mm without the TC vs. 200-500mm at 300mm? Guys,..... from my non-scientific (but fairly tedious) tests, both lenses are equally sharp in the center. It's insane. I did a comparison test on a tripod both indoors and outdoors using slow and fast shutter speeds, wide open, closed down, and no matter how I tried, the Nikon 200-500mm just kept hitting the target with prime-like sharpness and resolution. It also benefits from being heavier on the tripod. When you use the "Sports" VR on tripod with slow shutter speeds like 1/13s, it actually helps a lot. I couldn't get the 300mm f/4D to take a pin-sharp picture even on a tripod and using the timer at 1/13s, but the 200-500mm did just fine.
I recently went to the wetlands to shoot with the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR. I also brought my Nikon 1.4TCII, just in case. Mobile or still, anything I touched with this lens ended up in focus. Images came out sharp, detailed, clear and contrasty. Although the lens can be slow to acquire focus at first, once it does grab focus, it holds on very well. I shot some incoming ducks far away, very small in the frame, and they were in focus. If something ended up being out of focus, that's because I was still getting used to weilding this beast of a lens. It's larger and heavier than my 300mm f/4D and TC combo, so waving it around to follow fast-moving subjects is still new to me.
If you're looking to buy a telephoto lens for wildlife and you're wondering if you should go the 300mm f/4D or PF route with 1.4TC II or III,... again...in my opinion unless you have trouble hand-holding the 200-500mm due to it's size and weight (which is understandable!), go with the 200-500mm, or go test the Tamron 150-600mm G2 alongside the Nikon. It just makes no sense to spend $2,000.00 on the 300mm f/4PF (or $1,400.00 on the 300mm f/4D version) and $500 on a TC III for a combined cost of $2,500.00, when you could pay $1,400.00 for a sharp zoom that gives you about equal sharpness/detail, more reach, the ability to zoom out to 200mm when you need it and 4.5 stops of VR. It even works with a 1.4TC! You could easily buy the 1.4TC III and get 700mm at f/8 with very acceptable results for a little less than $2,000.00! I don't know how you could beat that for the price.
