Elk Mountain offers sub-alpine vegetation, with superb views. It is moderately challenging year-round destination for hikers in the Abbotsford, Chilliwack area, and can be enjoyed in a half or full day excursion. In the distance is Sumas Prairie, part of the eastern Fraser Valley, with the Coast Mountain Range on the horizon.

A late eastbound Zephyr offered me a chance to scratch off another bucket list location. There's an angled truss bridge that goes over the UP Falls City Sub [ex-MOP] just off the cluster of interstate bridges at what UP calls Summit. Because of that situation, there isn't any quick way to access this spot: I parked about "2 blocks" away, hopped a fence, and walked beside/under the interstate interchange. The shot is pretty tight with some junk on either side of the tracks, but it still framed up pretty nice for a tight crop on the scene.

Officially offered for sale on February 10, 1955, the first Chrysler 300 was athletic looking with 300 gross horsepower aboard, it was among the quickest cars of its time. It was able to achieve 60 mph in just 9.8 seconds, according to a test in Mechanix Illustrated by “Uncle Tom” McCahill. Uncle Tom also spurred the car up to a full 130 MPH. Tom McCahill and others in the contemporary automotive press used the term Beautiful Brutes” to describe Chrysler 300 series cars.

Besides being the most powerful production car of its time, the first Chrysler 300 was also among the best handling, thanks to a heavy-duty suspension. It can very well be considered an ancestor of the later muscle cars, though much more expensive, luxurious and exclusive.

The most prominent display of the first 300’s attributes did not come in any showroom, but on racetracks around the Southeast. Back in 1955, NASCAR stock cars were, in fact, stock production vehicles. Except for some crude safety equipment and numbers on the doors, they were almost indistinguishable from the cars the public could buy. With absolutely no financial support from Chrysler, Mercury Outboard founder Carl Kieckhaefer campaigned a fleet of white 300s during the 1955 NASCAR and AAA seasons with drivers like the Flock brothers (Tim, Fonty and Bob), Norm Nelson, Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson and Frank Mundy to name a few.

The Kieckhaefer 300s were spectacularly dominant and overwhelmed the factory-backed Chevrolets and Fords. Tim Flock took the driver’s championship while winning 18 races. He finished in the top five an astounding 32 times. His brother, Fonty, took another three victories, while Chrysler campaigner Lee Petty took home three trophies. Suddenly, the 300 had a glorious racing heritage in addition to its advertised Hundred Million Dollar Look.

Considering the short model year for that first 300, 1,725 were sold at an expensive $4,109 base price.

This was the car to start the legacy. Virgil Exner, then Chrysler's design chief, called his new styling direction "The Forward Look". The 1955 300 had a 2 door coupe body and clean, simple Chrysler Windsor side and rear quarter trim. Up front were two large Imperial “egg crate” grilles. This first of the letter series cars did not actually bear a letter. Chrysler’s original manuals named it the C-300, which was an appropriate name for the car. The “C-” designation was applied to all Chrysler models, and the 300 stood for the engine horsepower.

It was THE first modern American production car to achieve this 300hp output. Power came from an updated source already available; the fabled “Hemi” 331 cubic inch hemispherical head engine, modified with a “full race” cam, solid lifters, larger dual exhaust, and topped off with 2 4-barrel carburetors. The suspension was made firmer, allowing it to handle far better than most cars. It was given a special performance PowerFlite 2-speed automatic transmission, while the inside remained pure luxury.

Notably, it was fast. The battle lines would be drawn when it ran 127.58 MPH in the flying mile on the sands at Daytona Speed Weeks, and averaged 92 mph in the Daytona Grand National stock car race. This car dominated the stock car circuit, earning the NASCAR and AAA championships its first year out.

The car was available in three standard exterior colors: Black, Tango Red and Platinum, combined with a luxurious tan leather interior.

Late summer offers some very charming colours, with the sun getting lower and lower each day and the leaves slowly turning their colours from green to yellow and red.

One of the late september days - 25.09.2025 - I made a day trip to the part of the Ostbahn between Piła and Krzyż, where I was hoping to see SM31-143 with some trackworks trains, which were running around in the area.

As a bonus, I caught SM42-758 in Trzcianka, a very classic station on the old Prussian mainline, as it was shunting a rake of Gondolas after offloading aggregates at the ramp located near the station. Seeing PKP Cargo's SM42s in service is not a given nowadays, and it's even harder to see them on mainline duties - which happened that very day. The locomotive formed the train and left shortly after towards Piła.

It’s difficult to close the door on the things that once made us happy, that offered bright promise during dark times. Things that helped us find love or hope or happiness.

But the hard truth is that not everything can last forever and things end; sometimes abruptly, sometimes fading away slowly until they’re just a speck disappearing in the distance. We can’t hold onto things forever, no matter how firmly we fix our grasp upon them. We can’t force people to stay and seldom can we control the situations we find ourselves in.

But what we can do is remember one simple, undeniable reality. And that is that new prospects will always arise from the end of something else. That it’s okay to let go of something that ends, even when it’s devastatingly painful. Even when it’s something that seems like it’s being yanked away from you before you’re ready. The ending of things will sometimes feel excruciating, even when we deep down know that it’s the right thing, the only thing.

Who has ever started something new, something exciting, without finishing something first? It’s only when we’re defeated by the prospect of something ending that we think to pull ourselves up and move forward. Life is a process, a series of ups and downs. A sequence of unpredictable happenings. It’s not black and white and most of the events that fill up the timeline of our lives are very rarely planned or expected.

But isn’t that the whole point? Isn’t that what life is meant to be about? The things that end and the new opportunities that come out of them. The ways in which we fight and struggle and conquer and overcome.

One day you will wake up and it won’t hurt so bad. That you’ll go through entire days without playing out that ending in your mind. That soon there will be whole stretches of time when it never even crosses your mind, until one day it’s just an uncomfortable memory.

Know that one day you will look back and see that event not as the end, but as a starting point. As the pivot that turned everything around. As the thing that gave you the courage to try something new, something that would come to a beautiful fruition.

Let yourself realize that every wonderful thing that you’ve experienced is so because something else ended, not in spite of it.

Things will end, while others are just beginning.

In my previous article, like many photographer, I was very excited about the release of the new R6 and R5 because they offered tremendous advances.

www.flickr.com/photos/garivalden/50209737163/in/dateposted/

I bought the R6, the Canon RF 100-500mm and sold everything to buy again a 5D mark III

Why? Because the Canon R6 is also that:

1) Delivery of the RF – EF Adapter Ring offered by Canon has arrived 60 days after purchase. Fortunately, my nice store went out of its way to lend me one.

Many customers have suffered this and it is scandalous on the part of Canon not to have integrated the ring in the original box.

2) Prepare to pay (and I'm not even talking about new RF lenses)

- a very fast and robust SD card to enjoy the burst like the Sony Tough SD

- Resistant, I used Lightroom 6 box. To read new raw CR3s, you need Lightroom Classic

- To make the photos look like a Canon Picture Style you need a quality color profile, thank you to Damien Bernal for your recommendations

www.colorfidelity.com/

The choice of an L Bracket is complicated with this screen, Tom Migot has devoted several videos to it.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=LA25FyekVKY

The R6 is with High ISO but if you want a very clean result, Denoise by Topaze is the best Tool , So, one question: Why have I never needed it before?

www.flickr.com/photos/garivalden/51296276233

This photo at 12800 iso will be almost unusable on 5D Mark III but never forget that the easiest and most beautiful thing is to take pictures when there is ... light

- The second battery is essential. It is difficult to say how many pictures you can take with one battery but I advise you to double your battery park as well as the charging time.

For years, I shot without ever thinking about the drums with a second in the bag never used.

3) The ergonomics of the R6 disappointed me and brought nothing

- The grip is worse than before. However, I have small hands and the handle seems too small to me. Those with large hands have their little finger in the air and some props even sell a base to add.

I wore for years a 5d Mark III with a 300mm 2.8mm IS II sometimes by the tips of two fingers to tell if the whole thing was balanced.

- The SD card door opens only by friction. There is still a small slot to slide a nail with difficulty, but the 5d Mark III and IV opened more easily with one hand.

The adjustable screen has never been useful to me because its tilt to the left of the device is not practical and even less with the L bracket

Touch has never been useful to me, in the field physical buttons are more practical

4 / A user experience that sometimes disappoints:

- Eye tracking stalls when it is too complicated in the foliage. Does the ultimate portrait of your dreams with a subject against a pretty background require this technology?

- In billebaude if you take your camera back, it will sometimes take a while before everything turns on again. Several times I had to turn off the R6 completely because the autofocus didn't know where it was.

- You see a beautiful sunset, you take your R6, you put your eye in the viewfinder and there… disappointment. Why not keep looking in our good old DSLR?

5) The rendering of R5 and R6 is often very different in appearance compared to DSLR.

More so if you mount a native RF lens.

Is it the technology or the level of detail that wants this? The shots often appear to be very artificially separated, and natural colors like grass are sometimes strange. I know you can change everything in PP, but all of this bothers me and takes me away from the pictorial and cinematographic universe.

My daughter came home from school with a drastically different school photo than I saw for a decade, I got it, the canon photographer (my daughter had asked a few years ago ;-) had bought an R6 or R5 and the schoolyard became a bit strange as « Gattaca ».... Advantage for Eye AF, it’s tea time for him ;-)

6) Let's talk about goals.

The photos of a Canon hybrid with an RF lens that I have seen in recent months made me want to buy a Canon EF 85mm f1.2 II 1 month after the R6. I'm not sure that was the goal. from Canon that we buy back the EF lenses that we had sold second-hand.

www.flickr.com/photos/garivalden/50806574161

Canon did not lose everything because, to get Canon cash back, I exchanged my Canon EF 300MM 2.8 is II before the summer of 2021 for an RF 100-500mm ...

Why did I do this?

Fear of obsolescence and maybe a follow-up helped by an abundant marketing hype which made me give in and go against my convictions of never buying a zoom because the rendering really has nothing to do with a focal length fixed premium… I sold it 1 month later.

The bottom line of this financially not very pleasant operation is that, as in many areas, if we have the feeling that things will not be in our best interest, it is better to abstain ;-)

What will I miss most about the Canon R6

Focusing in low light, your 85mm 1.2 will get a facelift

Staggering stabilization from 100-500mm net to 1/50 th to 500mm

The focus on the eye, clearly the majority of wedding, sports and animal photographers will never want to go back, I understand them, this is a decisive advantage over the competition

And especially the advantage of having the collimators close to the edge unlike the DSLR

The burst and the endless sorting it generates, the swiveling screen, the touchscreen, the wifi, the gps, I will miss less.

I don't think I’ll buy again this excellent 300mm 2.8 IS II.

I still got the magical 135 mm F2 and 85mm 1.2 , my next wildlife Canon Lens will be a prime EF, surely excellent, not too big (price too) because I take my equipment everywhere, repairable I don't know ...

www.flickr.com/photos/garivalden/47688762631

Every day, especially since the digital and the Internet, our so-called user-friendly world becomes unnecessarily more complicated and deliberately consumerist.

The R5 and R6 are good cameras and Canon has really caught up to the competition but it's not my direction.

The 5D Mark III is 2012, a century after 1912, my favorite year, in which I have been preparing a photo for a very long time.

What if Canon EF finally became a way of life.

Monterosso al Mare, located in the heart of the Cinque Terre region of Italy, offers a picturesque glimpse into the history of a traditional Mediterranean fishing village. The scene captures its vibrant town square, where residents and visitors gather, surrounded by colorful buildings that reflect its centuries-old maritime heritage. Monterosso's history dates back to medieval times, and remnants of ancient fortifications still stand as a testament to its strategic importance in defending against pirate raids.

The architecture of Monterosso is characterized by its pastel-hued houses, as seen in this photo, with shutters painted in earthy greens and blues. These buildings often feature stone arches and narrow alleyways, which are typical of Ligurian coastal villages. The use of vibrant colors was historically practical, helping fishermen identify their homes from the sea. The town's layout combines practicality with charm, as many structures are designed to withstand the coastal climate while preserving a sense of community in the compact streets.

Culturally, Monterosso al Mare thrives on its connection to the sea and the land. Festivals celebrating local traditions, such as the annual Lemon Festival and the Feast of St. John the Baptist, highlight the town's deep ties to its historical roots. The lively atmosphere in the town square, captured in this image, reflects the communal spirit that defines Monterosso. Artisan shops and local markets, often filled with handmade crafts and souvenirs, add to the cultural richness of the town.

Gastronomically, Monterosso is a paradise for food lovers. The town is famous for its fresh seafood, particularly anchovies, which are a local specialty. Visitors can also enjoy classic Ligurian dishes such as trofie al pesto and farinata, along with the region's world-renowned white wines. This image hints at the culinary vibrancy of Monterosso, with outdoor seating at cafes and restaurants inviting visitors to savor the flavors of the Italian Riviera while basking in the town's idyllic atmosphere.

In 1911, Samuel P. Clark offered the board the site for the library, located at 15 Park Avenue West. It was valued at $2,500. There was a stipulation that the new building had to be well under construction within a year. First National Bank[4][5] donated a strip of land adjoining on the north and later Mr. Clark added a gift of $7,720 for the purchase of the lot to the east of the library property. The board was to remove an existing building and hire a landscape gardener to enhance the property.[2]

In 1913 the library building was completed at the cost of $23,000 and was designed by the Chicago firm Patton & Miller. The Women’s Club contributed $3,400 with the reservation that there be an assembly hall on the second floor for a meeting place until the amount of rent equaled their donation. The library’s collection had grown from 800 to 10,760 volumes.

The library was dedicated on April 15, 1913. It was 30 years after Nehemiah Matson’s death

Iceland offers some stark but beautiful landscape and scenes. In this case a shot of the beautiful little church at Skútustaðir on the shores of Lake Myvatn. I was wrong side for the light here but decided that the snow covered hill in the background provided a worthwhile backdrop.

I found this splendid specimen of a goat on my way back to the village from an early journey on my hunt for a beautiful sunrise when I passed a cute little farm.

The sunrise wasn't spectacular but, as you can see, this beautiful morning had to offer a lot anyway...

Built on a disused rail corridor, The Goods Line in Ultimo is Sydney’s equivalent of Manhattan’s High Line – a strategic pedestrian connection through unique green spaces in the inner city.

Extending from the end of Central Station’s Devonshire St Tunnel to Darling Harbour, The Goods Line links key landmarks along the ‘cultural ribbon’ on the southern fringe of the Sydney CBD. These landmarks include UTS, Chinatown, the Powerhouse Museum and the ABC.

Each week thousands of university students, workers, visitors and local residents make use of the elevated city park, which offers a variety of leafy and relaxed outdoor environments along the route through the UTS campus between Central Station and Darling Harbour.

For a subdivision that offers quite the views as a photographer, the Oregon Trunk sub in Central Oregon can also test the patience of photographers as train traffic averages less than 5 in a 24 hour period. With the lack of train traffic, the remoteness of this route between Wishram, Washington and Chemult, Oregon also gives negative affects to photographers as it's difficult to access most points because of private and tribal land along the 200+ mile route. If you're lucky to find one in the day time it sure can be a rewarding show to watch as they climb out of the Columbia River Gorge in Wishram, Washington to Chemult, Oregon which is the highest point of the line at 4765ft above sea level. Here a Pasco to Fresno, California manifest crosses the Crooked River just north of Redmond, Oregon enroute to Bend, Oregon for a crew change.

Stony Batter on Waiheke Island offers a good view to the outer limits of the Hauraki Gulf, a semi enclosed part of the Pacific that is Auckland's maritime playground. It is largely protected from the Pacific by Great Barrier Island and Little Barrier Island to the north, and by the Coromandel Peninsula to the east. Cape Rodney on the left and the Coromandel Peninsula on the right are part of the mainland. A line connecting them with Little Barrier Island and Great Barrier Island (left and right centre) forms the limit between the Hauraki Gulf and the Pacific Ocean beyond. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauraki_Gulf_/_Tīkapa_Moana#/map/0 The environmental integrity of the gulf has suffered through the introduction of industrialised fishing peaking in the 1970s. This severe overfishing, which unbalanced the marine environment by the removal of a main predator in the food chain, led to a widespread disappearance of kelp beds and their substitution by kina barrens. Kinas are sea urchins which flourish in the absence of the New Zealand snapper and lobsters, their main predators. Dredging of the mussel beds of the Firth of Thames reached a peak in 1961 shortly before collapse of the industry. Particularly damaging are the results of nitrogen carried into the gulf from surrounding agricultural land, with almost 90% coming from the dairy-farming runoff into the Firth of Thames. In 2000 New Zealand established the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. So far the park has failed to prevent overfishing and reverse the ecosystem collapse. Much more needs to be done to clean up the environmental degradation created by commercial interests in the past and present.

The Mirador Ferrier Lookout offers views with a unique perspective of Lake Grey, the Paine River, the massifs and their snow-capped peaks, and everything that Torres del Paine has to offer. Torres del Paine National Park, in Chile’s Patagonia region, is known for its soaring mountains, bright blue icebergs that cleave from glaciers and golden pampas (grasslands) that shelter rare wildlife such as llama-like guanacos. Some of its most iconic sites are the 3 granite towers from which the park takes its name and the horn-shaped peaks called Cuernos del Paine.

I first captured a candid shot of Robbie who was clearly flattered and wanted to pose for another shot. I introduced myself and offered to take a portrait for him and decided to do so in situ and use the out of focus street to frame him.

Robbie told me he was visiting from Kenya, his homeland, and he was 'live streaming' at the time with his mobile phone. He introduced me to his audience before I captured a few portraits for him.

I emailed the photos to him but sadly, as can often be the case, haven't heard back so I hope that he liked them.

Simon & Garfunkel: "The boxer"

The Hetet School of Maori art kindly offered free online tuition on how to weave a kono (4 sided basket) and rourou (5 sided basket). I watched the first one before going outside and to my delight the flax I bought about 15 years ago was the perfect one for weaving.

Chose a few leaves for my first basket ensuring there was no rain forecast and made sure I left the middle 3 leaves (else the flax may not survive). I followed the instructions and cut the leaves into 10mm wide strips which are known as whenu. Then to strip out the moisture each piece is run over a knife 3 times on each side. Once all 16 were done the weaving began.

I really enjoyed the whole process and was pretty stoked how well they turned out. I've made 4 more since these ones including 2 in cardboard which is rather different to work with. The feathers on the kono are from a kereru fight I witnessed above my driveway. A small poof of feathers parachuted to the ground. They were of course all collected for future decorating.

1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 4-4-2 W-30

After four years of being offered as part of the F-85/Cutlass line, the 4-4-2 was finally promoted to its own trim level, beginning with the 1968 model year.

By this time, the three-digit definition had evolved, so instead of representing four-barrel carburetor, four-speed transmission, and dual exhaust, “4-4-2” now stood for 400-cu.in. engine, along with the four-barrel and dual exhaust. All three were standard equipment through the 1969 model year, while equipment such as a four-speed manual, performance gearsets, and the W-30 package (which included the Outside Air Induction system) were optional.

Like the 1968-’69 models, the ’70 4-4-2 was available in three body styles, a two-door post coupe, which Oldsmobile referred to as the Sports Coupe; the two-door hardtop Holiday Coupe; and a convertible. After being prohibited previously, the 455 was not simply available, it was standard and offered in two varieties. The base 4-4-2 455 used “E” cylinder heads that helped produce 365 hp, backed in standard form with a three-speed manual. A heavy-duty suspension, accompanied by 14-inch plain-steel wheels and drum brakes, was also standard.

Its base engine was a 455-cu.in. engine that had been steadily improving since its 1968 debut. The 1970 4-4-2’s base 455 was rated for 365 hp, but the W-30 version–bolstered by a camshaft featuring an intake/exhaust valve duration of 285/287 degrees and .472-inch lift (with automatic; 328 duration and .475-inch lift with manual trans)–was rated at 370 hp.

The big performance option was the W-30 package, which provided a fiberglass hood and corresponding air-induction system, wide body stripes, appropriate badging, front disc brakes, and a 370-hp 455. This engine was fitted with special equipment not found on the base 455, including “F” heads, aluminum intake manifold, special camshaft, and distributor.
