Sometimes, you have to get lost to discover the path you were always meant to take

-Vinh Van Lam

This image is from most recent trip to Cuba.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting and post processing my images.

With that said-

One of the core tenants of my work is this: Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect. You have to practice of practicing. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing.

The ultimate pursuit is the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought. Practice like you have never won and preform like you have never lost. Mastery is the variation of repetition over time.

I was taken by this image, as is true with all my images, as I was walking to a a performance rehearsal of the next ballet to be staged by the National Cuban Ballet. I this this empty practice room the space was filled with the ballerina. Her focus was so strong I felt it as I walked by and had to step back and let her take me to where she was.

Every issue of an image needs to be solved at moment of capture. I realized that the image of her needed to be in a space big enough to show how she filed it. So I took a second shot that showed the the left side of the rehearsal room. I don’t believe in cropping images. I shoot 99% of my images full frame.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. 1/1250 of a second ISO 1800. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

I I I I find the stage and the players always come.

— Robert Doisneau

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

Whenever I looked at Robert Doisneau’s work the action of the subject was always absolutely spontaneous and the framing of the background, the angles, leading lines the geometry was absolutely flawless for such an amazingly “spontaneous” moment. Every time I would look at his work all I could thin of mine is considering a new line of endevour, perhaps one in which I would be saying “would you like fries with that?”

One year for my birthday I was given book of his greatest images. I did something men don’t normally do. I read the instructions. I.e. the introduction. The first line was something to the effect “The great secret to my work….” (GO ON) “is I find the stage and the players always come.”

Doisneau would set up his camera frame the image so it was perfect, the stage, and wait for the “players” to come. They always come. Since they are walking into your world instead of you walking in to their world they are spontaneous and unaware you exist with a camera.

These are greatest lessons I have learned always carry a camera, be taken by the picture don’t take the picture, if you want to take more investing picture stand in front of more interesting stuff and lastly find the stage and the players will always come.

I am[laying with something new in Nikon’s Studio NX, Flexible color picture control (FCPC). SO we are clear if you are a Nikon shooter and you are not processing your raw files in NX Studio you are truly doing your images a disservice. !00% of all of my images are converted from the .NEF file format to tiTiff in Nikon software since the inception of Nikon Capture. That is going all the way back to the first Nikon DSLR the D1.

I am working on creating FCPC settings that replicate great BW films from back in the day. This image was post processed with control points and an FCPC that I created to emulate 125iso film made by a USA film manufacturer.

What I love about Black & White photographs is that they’re more like reading the book than seeing the movie.

— Jennifer Price

From my three weeks in Namibia—

Light, gesture, color are the key elements of every photograph. But when do you know that an image is meant to be a a black and white image? The answer is a lot simpler than the general song and dance you hear the pixel pundits put forth. When the cold gets in the way of the gesture. Then it is time to abstract out the color from the image so the gesture remains.

I have included both color and BW.

There is no bad light. There is spectacular light and difficult light. It's up to you to use the light you have. You are responsible for every part of your image, even the parts you’re not interested in.The composition is already there, you just need to frame it.

Photography is an act of love. When I shoot I fall in love thousands a time in a day. I do not believe in long exposures and and long relationships.

Always shoot it now. It won't be the same when you go back..

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. Sorry it’s been yet another long minute since I last posted. It has been a work filled, fun filled, stress filled project rich few weeks.

That said…

When ever I have a moment between deadlines I rummage through the the 2 do drive. It’s full of almost pictures and images that at the tie I knew there was something there I just did not possess the “something” needed at the time to get it there.

This image is one of those. I shot this image 10 years ago with a D750 and the 28-300mm AKA the “street sweeper” lens.

I found the files in a folder named “PEACOCK” all the other folders had the standard naming/numbering convention I use. There is a children’s book about a peacock who finds himself living amongst a flock of pigeons. So I figured since coincidence is the universe’s attempt at remaining anonymous I should look inside. 3:47am I diminished the file and pulled a print.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I have been chomping at the bit to be able to talk about one of the new features in the Z8 3.0 firmware update. Specifically the ability to do a pixel shift / focus shift series of captures. Wow…… the color fidelity, and incredible detail is mind boggling but having your cake and eat it too with being able to mix wide ope with critical aperture for the sharpest and creamiest Bokeh again Wow…..

Pixel Shift is an option where the camera moves the sensor during a series of captures. This series is then merged in the Nikon NX Studio software. In this case, the pixel shift option was set to the maximum capture option of 32 images. The camera exposed an image then moved the sensor… about half the width of a single pixel… and exposed the next one. For 32 images. Those 32 NEF (RAW) files were merged into one massive NEFX raw file that now has a resolution of about 180,000,000 pixels.

Focus Shift Shooting is an option where the camera makes an exposure then shifts focus to a different plane and makes another exposure. The cool part is that the camera is automatically setting the shift movement so that a series of images can be stacked on post in such a way to increase the depth of the PLANE of focus. This results in a subject the can have a nearly unlimited amount of the subject focus. Not just more depth of field, but depth of actual in focus.

The Z8 FW 3.0 is the first time anyone has offered both at the same time on a full frame professional camera.

It’s been a minute since my last post. I have been working on two projects and traveling up and own the pacific northwest teaching. I am getting ready to go to Africa for 3 weeks and all the vaccinations and newly added visa requirements has pulled me away form my photography post processing.

I am working on a system in which I do not have to bring a laptop and be able to back all my images up. Part of that process was to free up three of my 4tb Sandisk Blade drives. Whilst doing that I found the elusive “folder of lost images.” We all have one that we can’t find but we know exists…. Out there in the ether. I was also updating all of my BW / IR actions so this was a win win/

This image is of a taboo frame on his way to the feels just after sunrise in the Viñales valley in Cuba. It is a breath takingly beautiful place where you have no choice but to travel at the speed of life. In the Viñales one never gets old.

From the Economist and Sun Digital Photo Archives

Since I bought my Z5 in 2021 I have been shooting just Jpegs as my 2010 iMac couldn't be updated to process Raw images from this camera. So I finally bit the bullet and got a new 2023 MacBook Pro. I also couldn't transfer that old worn-out photoshop to the new Mac and rather than spend money every month, I opted to try NX Studio Ver.1.5.0. Free from Nikon, it works seamlessly on my Mac, so far at least. I had used the old version off and on, but NX Studio is a big and better upgrade. So for now I am happy. This is the first shot I processed and uploaded on Flickr. Hopefully many more to come.

I am forever chasing light. Light turns the ordinary into the magical.

– Trent Parke

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

For me light is the jewel of the photograph. A very wise photographer and one of my photographic heroes, Bob Krist, said “what would you rather shoot the Taj Mahal poorly lit of a line of laundry beautifully lit?” Jay Maisel once told me in one of our many walks about NYC “treat light as if it is a solid as the subject. Trat it as if the subject is interrupting your beautiful light.”

Which brings us the the ballerina Kamila Capote. It is sunset, It appeared that the sun had finally given all it was going to. Kamila had be jumping, twirling and leaping for two hours. She “sat” on the malice’s stone wall an just started to stretch. I was about to call it a day when a cloud broke open and a glorious beam of light shown and all the solid objects interrupted the beautiful light. Big lesson with natural light is it isn’t over until you need to turn on your cellphone light to see where you are going. Even if you are A.S.O. (All Shot Out) if there’s light then there is the possibility of capturing magic.

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I shot this with the Z6III 100-400 S Nikkor with a 1.4 extender. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

I have a job that is more fun than fun. We pulled off to a village in the middle of the day because it was to hot to be out in a boat in the middle of the day and the animals were doing the smart thing, tapping in the shat in jungle. The village’s name translates to

The place of good teeth” I wrote that down because I could not figure out how to to spell the actual name. As I was bubbling around photographing a chicken clucking about with the chicken having nothing to about me try to photographer. As I looked up I saw this young girl and she saw me. It is the moment wy we both connected at that the pict her took itself. again back the discussion of the last post, for me the best photographs are the ones that feel as if we are in the space between a moment. Traveling to next but not there yet. Leaving the moment we were in yet not completely gone from it.

The first time I've seen a police patrol vehicle on this particular trail. The officers said they were searching here for a teenage girl reported missing in North Toronto.

New flats along the northern edge of Elms Field that's a 2 minute walk from where I live. They are in the process of being sold hence the ground floor one on the left of the block still being a showroom. Note the chimneys - not sure if the the block has communal heating but there's only one pot per chimney & I can't see them being dummy chimneys either.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

There is the self we show the world and the self we hide from the world. The goal I find is to have the subject of your image choose to hide in the camera. When that happens we see the actual “who” of the person is, not the “what” of what they are they choose to show.

Sorry it’s been a minute since I last posted. Things in Los Angeles have been taking my attention away from posting and post processing my images- Then I went Cuba. Then I came back 0n the 6th. Then I had to put my entire studio back together from prepping to bug out from the fires

That said…

CATS!!!!!!! I LOVE CATS!!!!!!!! OK correction to the last post- I could make a career of photographing skies, sunsets and CATS!!!! And to get a cat basking in good light….. I treat light when I conceptualize an image as if it is as solid of an object as the subject that is interrupting my beautiful light. What more is there to the life of a photographer? Life is too short to shoot in bad light and to DRINK bad coffee and cheap wine.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. 1/500 of a second ISO 220. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

For this last trip I gave myself the self assignment limitation of only used one lens and one camera no IR. The lens was the 28-400 and the camera was the Z6III.

This image has been plaguing me since I saw this street. I have looked at the street for 15 years drove by it, walked by it looked at it, never saw it. Then BOOM. Soooo… I asked my favorite Ballerina Kamila Quinones to dance for me. It is always a joy to see her get lost in the dance.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. 3D tracking 1/500 of a second ISO 500. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection. YES it is a composite, YES I used photoshop YES it is eight shots YES it happened in about 30 minutes. The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.

Lastly....

Please be advised that due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity,

gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

I have wanted to travel to Namibia for over 40 years. It all started with the second CD I ever purchased Sanford Ponder’s Etoshia” In the Land of Dry Water.

AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

I am by practice a wonderer. I am enamored not just having one disciple of artistic pursuit. I wand to be adept at as many of them as my time on this mortal coil allows me.

Astral or “night sky” photography has always been something I try to think of anything else to do before that. In North America there are too many obstacles, light pollution, traveling to really really isolated places and having to get up a 3am stabling around in the dark.

Then there is trying to get light (light painting) on the terrestrial part of the image.

All of those issues went away in Namibia. This image is two exposures. One of the sand dune at sunset and one right after the sun has set.

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I shot this with the Z6III 50mm S Nikkor f1.2. The dune at 1/5000 of a second at f1.8 ISO 200 and the star field at 10sec at f1.8 ISO 5000. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

Shot for a challenge on DPReview: shots taken in the kitchen. I tried to shoot in the style of the host. I didn't mind shooting in high iso as my thought was the grain would complement the images especially as I was shooting in black and white. I processed #1 and #2 in NX Studio using the original monochrome profile. For the color image, I went to Elements and used a color profile there. The beauty of shooting raw using a monochrome picture control is I always have the full color information on tap in case I want to go that way.

Typically I shoot using a color profile then process in color first in Adobe or On1. I then usually denoise in Topaz AI. When I convert to black and white, I add one of the grains offered in the black and white software. If I choose to add grain. Here, the grain is entirely from the D500 file.
