The black squirrel is a melanistic subgroup of the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), fairly common in Ontario and Michigan, USA, but rarer elsewhere. A morph with a variant pigment gene. This variation of a blonde tail could further be the result of a variation in their DNA resulting in a difference in the production or distribution of pigments.

Arrived back home after a three-day ride from Cape Breton and continuing with posting photos of the trip.

Checking to see if the grass is greener the other side of the fence!

Shot through a windowscreen, the nest is located just two meters off the ground on a small electrical meter box with lots of human traffic on the walkway below it. The robin layed no eggs and was gone a few days after we noticed it.

The wild turkey and two chicks crossed the road in front of us while driving in the north end of he city of Markham. By the time I stopped and lifted the camera from the backseat the turkey nibbled on a black berry bush with one chick visible.

As I walked around my neighborhood, I came across this leaf being blown against the metal bar of this fence. For a few seconds, the fence held the leaf in its grasp. Finally, the leaf broke free and joined the collective.

After seeing a photo of this church in the early years and reading online about its history, I found out the reason for the teardown. Apparently it was damaged by Hurricane Fiona in September of 2023, severely enough that a "deconstruction became necessary.

Churches across Cape Breton are being abandoned and in the case of this one, torn down. In many cases dwindling worshippers and increased costs of heating, upkeep, and taxes are the culprit.

To be sure there are still congregations that manage to stay afloat. In other cases different congregations troop together in one church to keep themselves alive.

I have been starting out my processing in NXStudio these days. There, I can choose whatever Nikon picture control I want. In this case, I chose two. I edited just a bit primarily to deepen the foreground shadows. In some cases, silhouettes are the natural result of shooting a contrasty scene and one wants to keep them as is. In others, the shadows are not so deep and one enhances them to hide unsightly foreground features. A little bit of both here.

Usually, I prefer the black and white rendition of an image to the color. Here I prefer the color though the color is quite muted.

Liquid Gold mural art exhibit by Toronto-based digital artist Alex McLeod. The art works are displayed in the hallways of the centre and at the entrance to the underground parking lot through to December 2024.

I'm watching the game and enjoying a La Trappe Quadrupel, an authentic Dutch Trappist Beer. Brewed with hops, barley, yeast and water from the abbey's own source. Once bottled, yeast and sugar is added for a secondary fermentation in the bottle.

Thanks to T.D. Burton and others on the Facebook group Cape Breton Roots, the location of this photo is confirmed as Bay St. Lawrence on Cape Breton Island. The church is of St Margaret's Parish. Unfortunately, this church burned down in 1997. The boat was owned by A.J. McDonald and named after his two daughters!

[The location of this shot escapes me. I took it over 33 years ago. If anyone recognizes the church, let me know. It might be around Bras D'or, but I am not sure.]
