For those of us who believe in physics, the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion

– Albert Einstein

This image is from a trip to Cuba I took in December of 2016.

I am working on images for my solo show of my images of Cuba that will happen sometime end of this year beginning of next at the Museo National Bellas Artes in Havana Cuba (the National Museum of Fine Art) I have been going through all of the 500,000 give or take frames I have shot so far.

The concept behind this project is to photograph the echos of the past that are still present today. What makes Cuba unique, almost wholly unique, is the it is caught in a bubble of 1962. I have several ongoing projects to capture the echo of Myanmar, India, Paris and New York City. Of all of these projects Cuba and Myanmar are the most complete.

Light, gesture and color are the three key elements of any image, with gesture being the most important consideration. In addition to these three ememnts there is a fourth concept- time, specifically timelessness. A successful image is one where gesture is served but the “when” is not definable.

I shot this with the D500 NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. 20 plus year project is 1/400 of a second ISO 100. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

The overarching experience of my time in The Land of Dry Water is the sensation of being seen through while being seen. There was a sense of peacefully, perfect balance that could turn into something just the opposite in an instant. But most of the time calmness.

I have been working on an image project for the past 21 years. The “Tuning the Last Page” Project. The object is to photograph the echos of the past that are present today. My most recent trip to Namibia has started a new chapter in the project “Turning the Last Page: In the Land of Dry Water.”

I have wanted to travel to Namibia for over 40 years. It all started with the second CD I ever purchased Sanford Ponder’s Etoshia” In the Land of Dry Water.

AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

The shadow is the greatest teacher for how to come to the light.

— Ram Dass

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

Shadow is as important to an image as light. Because no mater how you slice it, (and yes I have said and will say this repeatedly) Light is the jewel of the photograph. What would you rather look at- the Taj Mahal poorly lit or a wall of a building on a street with peeling paint and a rusty chair beautifully lit?

Light should always be treated as if it is as solid as the subject of the photograph is. The subject should always be approached as if it is interrupting the beautiful light. Light should never be just an after thought. It is really the only thought.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

At the risk of ticking off a lot of my peers who sell tutorials on how to pose a subject….

As religious as I am about never cropping in post a photograph, I never ever pose a subject in my photographs. I find how to pose tutorials to good money poorly spent.

Are there things to know whilst shooting a portrait? Yes there are some things to pay attention to when photographing a subject that breathes. For example the positioning of a hand so the wrist doesn’t look broken, IF you put a hand in a pocket let the thumb be on the outside so the hand does not look like it’s cut off, avoid shooting people directly straight on because it makes everyone look like a football player.

It will always come down to this: in absolute spontaneity you get absolute truth. You can only be one way when you are being spontaneous and that is truthful.

Nothing I am going to ask of a subject will be more natural and organic than what the subject of the image will choose to do. The reason is simple: they know their body better than I do.

I think it is down right silly some of the awkward posing that I see in images hands wrapped around in uncomfortable positions with wrist broken etc. Just because something looks “weird” does not make it art. It just means it looks weird.

Are there times when “posing” makes sense? Yes. But that will always be the exception, not the rule.

For example not one of the images in this series from Namibia is posed. I did not ask the lion. Lioness, Kudu, Cheetah, Rhino, Elephant, Leopard, Giraffe, Springbok etc. to pose.

And yet...

Just sayin’

From my three weeks in Namibia—

There is a Hassidic saying “sorry is the rabbi who is not will to teach the lesson 101 times” I once asked my master acting teacher, Tad Z. Danielewsk about how he teaches. He said “I treat knowledge like a bucket of mud and students like brick walls. I sling the mud at the wall and what sticks, sticks and what doesn’t doesn’t . At the end of the day f class I collect the mud tat didn’t stick and start throwing it again the time we have class. All I ask is that you don’t dodge the mud.

What I have learned over the years teaching photography is you have to throw a lot of the same mud repeatedly. Why sticks sticks and eventually if you repeat yourself enough the moment of epiphany will eventually happen. Why I say this (I have said this a lot)-

I photograph my portraits as if they are landscapes and my landscapes as if they are portraits. Each form contains the important aspects needed for the other.

(I have said this a lot too-)\

Light, gesture, color are the key elements of every photograph. But when do you know that an image is meant to be a a black and white image? The answer is a lot simpler than the general song and dance you hear the pixel pundits put forth. When the cold gets in the way of the gesture. Then it is time to abstract out the color from the image so the gesture remains.

There is no bad light. There is spectacular light and difficult light. It's up to you to use the light you have. You are responsible for every part of your image, even the parts you’re not interested in.The composition is already there, you just need to frame it.

Photography is an act of love. When I shoot I fall in love thousands a time in a day. I do not believe in long exposures and and long relationships.

Always shoot it now. It won't be the same when you go back..

Another from the crypt of lost files—

I am getting ready to go to Africa for 3 weeks and all the vaccinations and newly added visa requirements has pulled me away form my photography post processing.

I am working on a system in which I do not have to bring a laptop and be able to back all my images up. Part of that process was to free up three of my 4tb Sandisk Blade drives. Whilst doing that I found the elusive “folder of lost images.” We all have one that we can’t find but we know exists…. Out there in the ether. I was also updating all of my BW / IR actions so this was a win win.

This image is of of the Ballerina Kamila Quinones Capote. I would say that she is my favorite ballerina to shoot but if I said that there would be no living with her whilst we work. So she’s ok….

All artistic expression comes From the same place we just choose the best metaphor to express our creative expression. Every Artist has an instrument. Musicians what they play, painters brush and canvas, photographers have the camera the lens and the file the post process, Dancers have the their bodies which the hone to respond in ways that defy reality. What I like about working with her is her connection to emotional instrument that is her heart and the physical instrument that is her body is an instantaneous connection of mind/body. I love how she gets lost in the moment even though there are all sots of distractions that are a photoshoot.

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!

—Audrey Hepburn

From my three weeks in Namibia—

Sunrise, last Moon set before the night of no moon and the last moments of the visor milky way.

I was up before sunrise in the Sossusvlei dessert to do a hot air balloon flight at sunrise. (PRO TIP: If there is a hot air balloon flight to do -do it.) When ever I do a balloon flight I dress accordingly. I also travel with a Tripod. Always. With the goal of the trip being able to say “well I never took it out”. But when you need a tripod you need a tripod. This is a composite of two images. With my eyre I could see the stars, the crescent moon and the circle of illumination of the arriving rising sun. The reality is I saws this. The technical reality is I could expose for the stars or I could expose for the impend

Ing sun rise an moon setting. But not both. I have always been of the belief that the is impossible is an opinion. And is generally the opinion held by the person saying it. Physics has limitations, in this case optical and sensor physics can shoot on event but not both in the same shot. Imagination however is limitless. Saint Francis of Assisi said “Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

The necessary- shoot two images on a tripod expose for the stars expose for the sunrise, the possible blend them in software and suddenly you have done the impossible.

However no mater what or placement to an image all observers see the moment of a stilled moment of time, the photograph, exactly the same way.

I have been chomping at the bit to be able to talk about one of the new features in the Z8 3.0 firmware update. Specifically the ability to do a pixel shift / focus shift series of captures. Wow…… the color fidelity, and incredible detail is mind boggling but having your cake and eat it too with being able to mix wide ope with critical aperture for the sharpest and creamiest Bokeh again Wow…..

Pixel Shift is an option where the camera moves the sensor during a series of captures. This series is then merged in the Nikon NX Studio software. In this case, the pixel shift option was set to the maximum capture option of 32 images. The camera exposed an image then moved the sensor… about half the width of a single pixel… and exposed the next one. For 32 images. Those 32 NEF (RAW) files were merged into one massive NEFX raw file that now has a resolution of about 180,000,000 pixels.

Focus Shift Shooting is an option where the camera makes an exposure then shifts focus to a different plane and makes another exposure. The cool part is that the camera is automatically setting the shift movement so that a series of images can be stacked on post in such a way to increase the depth of the PLANE of focus. This results in a subject the can have a nearly unlimited amount of the subject focus. Not just more depth of field, but depth of actual in focus.

The Z8 FW 3.0 is the first time anyone has offered both at the same time on a full frame professional camera.

This train station and a railway shed is all that remains from a bygone era of train transportation between Sydney and Louisbourg. All other stations and tracks have been torn up and removed. It now houses the Sydney&Louisbourg Railway Museum and dates from 1895. A wooden gothic revival structure with gables cross gables and a skirt roof. It's a Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Property.

Time doesn't seem to pass here: it just is.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

Time just pauses as well as moves. Stillness has no motion and yet moves.

Everything feels as if you have just exhaled and have yet to inhale. The experiencing of the equipoise of life.

I shot this with the Z6III NIKKOR 28-400mm f/4-8 lens. mage raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection.

The scenic diversion sign confused and amused us at first. We were on the paved road at left and followed it to visit the Highland Village on top of a hill. When we saw the sign it made us curious also and diverged from the paved road onto the unpaved road at right and came upon the scenes in the previous five pictures in my photo stream, Plaster Cove the MacCormack Provincial Park, etc. A detour and a diversion well taken.

We never did visit the Highland Village and its Museum on top of the hill, but continued on the road to the Little Narrows ferry and Baddeck beyond.

Cobblestoned Giraldo Square in Evora, capital of the Alentejo area, with Igreja de Santo Antão, St. Antony's Church, a Renaissance building dating from 1563. The square is named for Gerald the Fearless who freed the city from Moorish rule in 1167. In the foreground a cart offers roasted chestnuts to the passers-by.

The marble fountain visible in front of the church dates from 1570.

Fall is inevitable, through all of their life leaves hold within them the power

to die and that must color their life.

—Orson Scott Card

Fall is my favorite time of year. The visual crispness of fresh apple cider. The warmth of sunlight with the promise of chill in the air.

I shot this with my new Nikon Z6III and my favorite lens the “Plena” 135mm f 1.8 S Nikkor lens. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection by DxO.

Cloudy conditions led me to shoot using the monochrome setting on my camera. Then, I used Nikon software to maintain the camera's monochrome style. A few tweaks in NX Studio, but, basically, what I saw in my viewfinder at the time.

Time moves in one direction, memory in another.

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

We do not remember days, what we remember of moments., The power of the still image is we can capture fractions of a second of time’s movement with stillness a revisit that moment of time’s march froward in the present moment we are in. Being inertial observers of time. This is what fascinates me the most about photography.

I shot this with the 24-200mm f/4-6.3 Nikkor lens. 1/250 of a second ISO 3600. Image raw processed in NX Studio and Photoshop CC with the NiK collection by DxO.
