There's nothing worse than a sharp photograph of a blurry concept
— Ansel Adams
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
Not every picture has to be sharp to be special. I is from imperfection perfection comes a perfectly imperfect moment. the beauty inlays to be found in the blur. Needing to have a image with everything perfectly “In focus” is really overrated.

CCGS Baie des Chaleurs is an aluminium-hulled Search and Rescue boat designed by naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd, Vancouver, British Columbia, and is an improved variant of an earlier UK design with a larger size and greater range. It also has specific design elements allowing operation under extreme weather conditions, particularly along Canada's Atlantic coast. The boat has self righting ability and is durable enough to withstand twelve metre seas and Beaufort Force 12 conditions.
Be the person your dog thinks you are.
-– C.J. Frick
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
Of the many things that have captured me about Cuba over the years the approaching two decades of me shooting the country and the people is the friendliness of the dogs and cats. Unlike here you almost never hear a dog bark unless it’s in welcome. Cats are always up for a ear tug and a head scratch, stray or someone’s house cat. In cuba more than anywhere as – Christopher Morley quipped no one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does.

You don’t have to go looking for pictures. The material is generous. You go out and the pictures are staring a tyou.
— Lee Friedlander
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
This subject of this image was 90 degrees to the left of the previous image from yesterday’s upload. I did nothing more tan our to the right and switch to the camera body that had the 135mm lens on it.
So again I say-
The most wonderful images, for me. Are the ones that are of interesting plainnesses. The moment between moments on the way from somewhere to somewhere else whist neither moving or standing still. The moments that no-one actually sees as the move through there individual journeys to where ever their somewhere to somewhere else.
The power of of wielding the light saber of inertial observance, I.e. the camera allows the inertial observer, I.e. the photographer to be taken by the moment of the fleeting movement of time and freeze it. So we can always travel back to that exact spot and give ourselves the greatest give one can give- a memory.

I go out to take a walk, I see something, I take a picture. I take photographs. I have avoided profound explanations of what I do.
– Saul Leiter
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
I do not take pictures as either an avocation, the way to pay the rent or for the “art” of it. The images take me. I just go for a walk and allow myself to slowdown to the speed of life. If you go out with the intent to make a photograph your images will never meet you expectations. However if you go out with the intention of not doing that all you can do is exceed your expectations.

At the risk of ticking off some people by reacting myself….
Sir Terry’s quote is one of my most repeated mantras. Light is as important to an image as dark. I frequently find myself intersecting this mantra with Michelangelo’s approach to sculpture which was to remove everything that “isn’t” and free the sculpture from the living stone. If you replace the word for “sculpture” with “image” and “stone” with “RAW File” and a dab of The Artist Henri Matisse’s thought “a little white paint goes a long way” you have the entire core of how I post process.
What makes this image work is the use of dark and that a little bit of light goes a long way. What is also interesting is that even though the gesture of the image is so strong that it works extremely well as a black and white, I prefer the color version because it supports the gesture.
But ultimately Art is in the eye of the viewer. Self expression is in the eye of of the image’s creator.

Blackett's Lake is a small community nestled on a lake between Highway 4 and Coxheath Road in Cape Breton. It's named after an early pioneer Walter Blackett who homesteaded on the shores of this lake. It forms the headwaters of the Sydney River flowing northeastward towards the North Atlantic. Blackett's Lake Road runs from Highway 4 in the Sydney Forks area towards Coxheath Road via a small causeway, a favourite drive for us and many other Cape Bretoners.

A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side
of it.
— Edward Steichen
From my three weeks in Namibia—
At the risk of ticking off a lot of my peers who sell tutorials on how to pose a subject (part 2)….
In addition to Steichen’s belief it also is made in the space between subject and photographer. That is the connective tissue that make the image compelling, not just a series of still images a contortion fest. The best portraits (IMHO} are the ones where there is a comparative flow between subject and photographer. Where one pers is reacting to the other and there reacting back and so on and so on Both are leading and both are following. It is in this dance, and it is a dance, that it does not matter if the subject has four legs and a tail or two legs and arms. Iyit id in this dace that the images take themselves.
OR good luck trying pose a Leapard.

I am not a big believer in the 17th century painting theory approach to composition. As a matter of fact I think it is dogmatic, pedantic and pompously silly. Grecian Mean, Golden rule, Rule of Thirds, et.al. for me is the outcome of a bunch of dead old guys sitting around a rtable trying to define what a bunch of deader older guys were thinking.
. I feel that understanding human visual perception and how we “see” things is the more important thing to understand. For me, and what guides my hand in post, is that all my images are optical illusions basically a variation on the French drop coin trick.
The ownership of color in an image is the most critical factor in the visual success of the image. A pattern is interesting but a pattern interrupted is more interesting Shape is the enemy of color. The eye has a tendency to see the shape over the color. THe key is to cause shape to become the unwitting ally of color so you will see the colors over the shape whilst still capturing the gesture of the image.

All creativity comes form the same place within us. I believe we all have the ability to create greatness. It is just a mater of what metaphor we choose to express the create spark of madness we are all born with. Every artist has their instrument, ballet dancers their finely trained bodies that they hurtle through space defying gravity, painters have their brushes, paints and canvas, musicians the instrument they close to release the voice from within, a chef has the kitchen and all the flavors of imagination and the photographer has the camera, lens and print.
The joy of all of this is to get lost in the doing, to be held in the movement of the unending sensation of the movement of connection. It is not of matter of how you choose to express your creativity. It is a matter of does they way you express your creativity give you joy.
The mistake is to not express the momentary lapse of reason that comes from the clarity of creating something that brings you joy.

When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!”
– Ted Grant
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
I always get asked these four questions: Do you see in black and white, can you teach me how to see in black and white, how do you know when an image is supposed to be a black and white and how come your blacks and white images look better than my black and white images.
Then I heard and read a lot of noise about how it’s all about contrast, contrast light and dark and contrast. Or basically the person positing and exposing these thoughts does not really have a clue.
In the film days when you put black and white film in the camera you saw the image in color and the film recorded it in grayscale base off a specific tonal production curve unique to the flavor of film that was in the camera. SO every image was black and white.
So what makes an image a successful black and white? It comes down to the three core elements (according to Jay Maisel or the four key elements according to me, because I cannot leave well enough alone), Light, Gesture and Color (Jay’s) and time (mine). According to Jay Light and Color are obvious but it is Gesture that is the most important, Gesture that is the most telling.
SO the equation for when an image wants/needs to become a black and white is when the color of the image distracts from the gesture of the image.
For example this image, the colors a lovely, but the truly distract from the gesture of the dancers which is beautiful and timeless.
The point? I have never met an image did not know or tell me that it was wanting to be a black and white image. The gesture of the image will always let you know. As to the rest of it being light a nd dark and contrast contrast and more contrast? That really is the after thought and holds true for both color and black and white.

Talent is nothing without dedication and discipline, and dedication and discipline is a talent in itself.
—– Luke Campbel.
This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.
As a general rule I never set up any of my images. On those occasions when I have an ima ge where I need a dancer to be in a specific place, I do as much as one can to be vague (to the point of the dancer feeling I’n completely clueless) about why I want from them. One of, in not the most important concept that drives the way I approach being taken by the image is this: In absolute spontaneity to you get absolute truth. You can only be one way if you are spontaneous and that is truthful.
I also as close to never one can get crop an image.99.9% of all the images I have ever shot are full frame. I believe that the rectangle I see in the viewfinder is the canvas to compose within.
Simply put I do not pre-visualize my images before I shoot them I only pre-visualize then after they are shot.
SO to this image. I was shooting boxers, the whistle blew, the practice “bout” ended and the boxer who was sparring with the boxer I was actually shooting at the moment move to the ropes to hear what the Riner was saying to him I filled the Fram pushed the shutter ring then he went back to center ring and the whistle blew to start the new bout of sparring.
The point? It took more time to describe it and more time for you to read the description of events than it took to track, frame and capture the moment.
Each and every person who desires to to be a photographer has the talent to do it. But Talent is nothing without dedication and discipline, and dedication and discipline is a talent in itself.
Again I say here is more to boxing than the elegance of the randomness of the ring.
