Taken from the home of friends in Ben Eoin looking out over the East Bay arm of Bras D'Or Lake. It flashed by so quick that I didn't have time to reset the shutter speed on the camera. So far it's the only eagle we've seen while here.

Life happens even when we have other plans. We start out with our plan A for life, but somehow we find ourselves live our plan who’s letter is much further down the alphabet,

As melancholy as witnessing those moments there is a poetry to it for those who catch a glimpse of them. Just like a fish does not know he is in the ocean he also does not see the outcome of the overwhelming sound of silence in the ocean of noise.

Lighthouse History

The Louisburg Lighthouse was first built in 1730-34 and was the first Lighthouse built in what is now Canada and second to the Boston Light (1716) in North America . The lantern was destroyed by fire in 1736 and a new lantern was installed in 1738. It was badly damaged in 1758, when Lighthouse Point was used as a battery location, and demolished during the final siege of Louisbourg Fortress, which was razed by the English. In 1842 a wooden lighthouse was built, with a foghorn added in 1902. This building was destroyed by fire in 1922. Then in 1923 this octagonal and concrete lighthouse was built. De-staffed in 1990, it is still operational as a beacon and is a tourist attraction with visible archeological ruins.

It is a Canadian National Historic Site.

If you get too close, you’ll become poetry

-Xien

From my three weeks in Namibia—

I shot 27525 captures. That is after pitching the Beverly out of focus ones and the ones where the camera decided to take a picture whilst I was walking.

I chose this one because I have been repeatedly been asked “how how close did you get?”

This close. About 12 feet. This is at 260mm on the 100-400mm S Nikkor. If I got any closer I would not become poetry, I’d be lunch.

The system in which I came up with to not have to bring a laptop and be able to back all my images up with my ipad. Worked swimmingly. I shot on Delkin black 850 & 150gb cards. Which is the key to all of this fast read and fast downloads. I brought three 4tb Sandisk Blade drives. I used the Lexar WorkflowGo2. I was very hesitant to buy anything Lexar. I have had less than stellar luck with their cards. That said the workflowGo did the job.

This is one of a bazillion Lion captures I have. I have images of Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Caracals, Elephants, Hippos, Rhinos, Water Buffalo, Wildebeests, two types of Baboons, two types of Zebra, Brown Hyenas, Wild Dogs, Warthogs, Oryx, Mongoose, Read Heart beast, Springbok, Sable, Eland, Black Faced Impala, Impala, Crocodiles, Kudo, Waterbuck, Dik-Dik (so I did take Dik-Dik pics), Steenbok,Scrub Hare, Rock Hyrax, Side Winder snakes, African Ground Squirrels, Cape Penguin and so many birds I can’t even begin to name them and those are just the animals I can remember.

AND to answer the next question YES I will be organizing a workshop there.

One of the core tenants of my work is this: Practice does not make perfect, a perfect practice makes perfect. You have to practice of practicing. Which is why I always am practicing at practicing.

The ultimate pursuit is the pursuit of attaining the Zen state of Shibumi- effortless perfection and elegance. A state of doing that is thoughtful thoughtless thought. Practice like you have never won and preform like you have never lost. Mastery is the variation of repetition over time.

I was taken by this image, as is true with all my images, as I was walking to a a performance rehearsal of the next ballet to be staged by the National Cuban Ballet. I this this empty practice room the space was filled with the ballerina. Her focus was so strong I felt it as I walked by and had to step back and let her take me to where she was.

Every issue of an image needs to be solved at moment of capture. I realized that the image of her needed to be in a space big enough to show how she filed it. So I took a second shot that showed the the left side of the rehearsal room. I don’t believe in cropping images. I shoot 99% of my images full frame.

When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!”

– Ted Grant

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

I always get asked these four questions: Do you see in black and white, can you teach me how to see in black and white, how do you know when an image is supposed to be a black and white and how come your blacks and white images look better than my black and white images.

Then I heard and read a lot of noise about how it’s all about contrast, contrast light and dark and contrast. Or basically the person positing and exposing these thoughts does not really have a clue.

In the film days when you put black and white film in the camera you saw the image in color and the film recorded it in grayscale base off a specific tonal production curve unique to the flavor of film that was in the camera. SO every image was black and white.

So what makes an image a successful black and white? It comes down to the three core elements (according to Jay Maisel or the four key elements according to me, because I cannot leave well enough alone), Light, Gesture and Color (Jay’s) and time (mine). According to Jay Light and Color are obvious but it is Gesture that is the most important, Gesture that is the most telling.

SO the equation for when an image wants/needs to become a black and white is when the color of the image distracts from the gesture of the image.

For example this image, the colors a lovely, but the truly distract from the gesture of the dancers which is beautiful and timeless.

The point? I have never met an image did not know or tell me that it was wanting to be a black and white image. The gesture of the image will always let you know. As to the rest of it being light a nd dark and contrast contrast and more contrast? That really is the after thought and holds true for both color and black and white.

The solar eclipse occurred today with a heavy cloud cover obscuring the pivotal moment of total darkness of the sun. The northern edge of the path of totality was located about 30 km to the south of our neighbourhood over Lake Ontario. As a result we only got glimpses of the moon covering up the sun through he clouds. In a way it was OK as I hadn't prepared my cameras to take pictures of the solar eclipse with a clear sky. So I got shots with the brightness of the sun lessened by the cloud cover.

From my three weeks in Namibia—

What I love about photography the most is that even though we are all, as Einstein posited, inertial observers of any given moment and depending on where we are standing when we view the “moment” we all see it differently. With a photograph no matter where we are initially observing the image we all see the frozen moment exactly the same way.

For me the best photographs are the ones that feel as if we are in the space between a moment. Traveling to next but not there yet. Leaving the moment we were in yet not completely gone from it.

I I I I find the stage and the players always come.

— Robert Doisneau

This image is from my most recent trip to Cuba.

Whenever I looked at Robert Doisneau’s work the action of the subject was always absolutely spontaneous and the framing of the background, the angles, leading lines the geometry was absolutely flawless for such an amazingly “spontaneous” moment. Every time I would look at his work all I could thin of mine is considering a new line of endevour, perhaps one in which I would be saying “would you like fries with that?”

One year for my birthday I was given book of his greatest images. I did something men don’t normally do. I read the instructions. I.e. the introduction. The first line was something to the effect “The great secret to my work….” (GO ON) “is I find the stage and the players always come.”

Doisneau would set up his camera frame the image so it was perfect, the stage, and wait for the “players” to come. They always come. Since they are walking into your world instead of you walking in to their world they are spontaneous and unaware you exist with a camera.

These are greatest lessons I have learned always carry a camera, be taken by the picture don’t take the picture, if you want to take more investing picture stand in front of more interesting stuff and lastly find the stage and the players will always come.

SO we are clear if you are a Nikon shooter and you are not processing your raw files in NX Studio you are truly doing your images a disservice. !00% of all of my images are converted from the .NEF file format to tiTiff in Nikon software since the inception of Nikon Capture. That is going all the way back to the first Nikon DSLR the D1.

This image is one of those. I shot this image 10 years ago with a D750 and the 28-300mm AKA the “street sweeper” lens.

I found the files in a folder named “PEACOCK” all the other folders had the standard naming/numbering convention I use. There is a children’s book about a peacock who finds himself living amongst a flock of pigeons. So I figured since coincidence is the universe’s attempt at remaining anonymous I should look inside. 3:47am I diminished the file and pulled a print.

I have been chomping at the bit to be able to talk about one of the new features in the Z8 3.0 firmware update. Specifically the ability to do a pixel shift / focus shift series of captures. Wow…… the color fidelity, and incredible detail is mind boggling but having your cake and eat it too with being able to mix wide ope with critical aperture for the sharpest and creamiest Bokeh again Wow…..

Pixel Shift is an option where the camera moves the sensor during a series of captures. This series is then merged in the Nikon NX Studio software. In this case, the pixel shift option was set to the maximum capture option of 32 images. The camera exposed an image then moved the sensor… about half the width of a single pixel… and exposed the next one. For 32 images. Those 32 NEF (RAW) files were merged into one massive NEFX raw file that now has a resolution of about 180,000,000 pixels.

Focus Shift Shooting is an option where the camera makes an exposure then shifts focus to a different plane and makes another exposure. The cool part is that the camera is automatically setting the shift movement so that a series of images can be stacked on post in such a way to increase the depth of the PLANE of focus. This results in a subject the can have a nearly unlimited amount of the subject focus. Not just more depth of field, but depth of actual in focus.

The Z8 FW 3.0 is the first time anyone has offered both at the same time on a full frame professional camera.
