i wouldn't make this up. well, i would, but i didn't. she lost to a 10 yr. old existentialist wearing a black leather jacket and wrap-around shades who played bye bye blackbird in his armpit. they asked him for a statement after winning, and he said "i like pie". this should be a picture of him but my contest shots were messy, and existentialists don't loiter. oh, i should add that she was very sweet to pose for me and she was a really good loser.

Something different. I took my camera to my son's Graduation ceremony, and found this group. I loved the colours of the head-scarves and the coming together of the Islamic tradition with the Oxford tradition of this old and venerable university.
Although built as Purpose Built Student Accommodation it has emerged that Edinburgh City Council has purchased the Northfield House development to accommodate homeless people.

Demolition and redevelopment of former suburban hotel, originally a Free Church manse, as a multi-storey student self-catering residence made up of single studio apartments (a hostel made up of bedsits).
Northfield House Hotel, 115 Lasswade Road, Edinburgh. Application 20/02562/FUL for the demolition of the existing hotel and redevelopment of the site for purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA). The plans were for around 100 studio apartments over five floors (including lower ground). The student accommodation block is designed to be 'car-free'. The plans were submitted in 2020, refused on 14 January 2021 and allowed on appeal by the Scottish Government reporter on 6 June 2022.
The project is using modular construction methods with units manufactured offsite.

Crazy multi-glyphs/ligatures on the outer walls of Gandzasar Monastery, Artsakh. With my limited Armenian deciphering skills, I'd say the one on the right is at least three letters in one (an "Ayb", a "Men", and a "Vew" possibly?). With the left one, I just give up. :-)

The name Lumad grew out of the political awakening among various tribes during the martial law regime of President Ferdinand Marcos. It was advocated and propagated by the members and affiliates of Lumad-Mindanao, a coalition of all-Lumad local and regional organizations which formalized themselves as such in June 1986 but started in 1983 as a multi-sectoral organization. Lumad-Mindanao’s main objective was to achieve self-determination for their member-tribes, or, put more concretely, self-governance within their ancestral domain in accordance with their culture and customary laws. No other Lumad organization had had the express goal in the past.
Representative from fifteen tribes agreed in June 1986 to adopt the name; there were no delegates from the Three major groups of the T'boli, the Teduray and the Subanen. The choice of a Cebuano word was a bit ironic but they deemed it to be most appropriate considering that the various Lumad tribes do not have any other common language except Cebuano. This is the first time that these tribes have agreed to a common name for themselves, distinct from that of the Moros and different from the migrant majority and their descendants.
There are 18 Lumad ethnolinguistic groups namely, Ata, Bagobo, Banwaon, B’laan, Bukidnon, Dibabawon, Higaonon, Mamanwa, Mandaya, Manguwangan, Manobo, Mansaka, Subanon, Tagakaolo, Tasaday, Tboli, Teduray, and Ubo.
According to the Lumad Development Center Inc., there are about eighteen Lumad groups in 19 provinces across the country. They comprise 12 to 13 million or 18% of the Philippine population and can be divided into 110 ethno-linguistic groups. Considered as "vulnerable groups", they live in hinterlands, forests, lowlands and coastal areas
Katawhan Lumad are the un-Islamized and un-Christianized Austronesian peoples of Mindanao, namely Erumanen ne Menuvu`, Matidsalug Manobo, Agusanon Manobo, Dulangan Manobo, Dabaw Manobo,Ata Manobo, B'laan, Kaulo, Banwaon, Teduray, Lambangian, Subanen, Higaunon, Dibabawon, Mangguwangan, Mansaka, Mandaya, K'lagan, T'boli, Mamanuwa, Talaandig, Tagabawa, and Ubu`, Tinenanen, Kuwemanen, K'lata and Diyangan. There are about twenty general hilltribes of Mindanao, all of which are Austronesian.
The term Lumad excludes the Butuanons and Surigaonons--even the said two ethnic groups are native to Mindanao and the word tells it so--because those two are Visayans and Lumad are not ethnically related to them, which creates a contradiction because the word lumad literally means "native" in Visayan.
