Thornbridge Hall

A Jacobean Country House surrounded by 12 acres of quintessential English gardens, set in the heart of the Peak District National Park.

Designed at the end of the 19th Century to create a vision of '1,000 shades of green' which the owner wanted to be able to see.

History

Thornbridge was the seat of the Longsdon family from the 12th century until the late 18th century.

In 1790 John Morewood, a linen merchant, bought the estate for £10,000, and enlarged the earlier house.

In 1871 Frederick Craven rebuilt the house entirely in Jacobean style, but the house as we see it today is the work of a Sheffield lawyer named George Marples.

In 1896 Marples enlarged the house, to nearly its present form, and laid out the gardens. He bought up much of the surrounding land and employed many servants and gardeners, all of whom addressed him, Lord Marples. Marples also built estate cottages, lodges, and even a private railway station, now Thornbridge Outdoors.

In 1930 Charles Boot, head of a Sheffield based building firm, bought the estate. Boot's company (Henry Boot Construction) had earned the contract to demolish the stately home of Clumber Park after that house was destroyed in a fire in 1938. Boot rescued a large number of statues, fountains, and building facades from Clumber and installed them at Thornbridge Hall.

In 1945, after Boot's death, Sheffield City Council bought Thornbridge at auction for £42,000 with the intention to use it as a teacher training college. Building alterations were necessary to put this into effect.

In 1948 the first 60 student teachers began their studies. The final teacher training class was held in 1975, after that the Hall was used as a multi-purpose Education Centre for South Yorkshire.

In 1997 the Hall was bought back into private ownership by the Hunt family, who started restoration work to the formal gardens and removed inappropriate additions to the house to reveal its proper proportions.

In 2002 the Hall was bought by the Harrison family. Since then extensive work has taken place The Harrisons made a commitment to add their layer of history to Thornbridge and return many of the features back to their former glory. Completed works include the main house and all its rooms including the exquisite music room, the Carriage House, Gardeners Cottage, North Lodge, South Lodge, the rebuilding of the Orangery and extensive new building work to link the whole estate.

Remaining first and foremost a private family home, Thornbridge is also now recognised as one of the most exclusive and exciting venues for Events and Weddings in the country.

The Hall is Grade II Listed.

As my friends and I were leaving Canter's (for our twice a year gathering), I had to stop at the display window of the store next to Canter's. This time they had a few mannequins on display with what were supposed to be costumes for Halloween. I guess Leeloo didn't go over with the current crowd. I suppose it had to do with the fact the movie the character was featured in ("The Fifth Element") came out almost thirty years ago. That means that a lot of the current generation may not have been born when this film was released, or maybe they didn't care or know much about it. Or, I could be wrong and maybe there were a surplus of Leeloo outfits that didn't all sell.

Now who say men can't do this? :) here is a prime example for the record, whilst editing this photo with one hand (mouse) i was rocking tickles (nearly 3 months old now) to sleep (which only took 30 minutes :) ) and discussing the finer points of why chaos (4 year old) should go to sleep even though she was sleepy but her feet were wide awake, ie walking around at 8:30pm - this rates up there with some of the best of a 4 yro's logic.

Here another example:

chaos: 'dad, ya know what'

me: 'what?'

chaos: 'we should get a icecream'

me: 'no'

chaos: 'but it s really hot day and it will cool me down'

me: 'nope, drink some water.'

chaos: 'i'll share it with you'

me: 'no'

chaos: 'it will help me go to sleep.'

and it goes on :)

Even multi-storey car parks started somewhere! This is the first true multi-storey car park on this scale in Britain. Surprisingly, it dates from before the Second World War.

Completed in 1939, the car park provided space for 750 cars on its four upper levels plus mezzanines and the roof — at the rate of 13.4 square metres per car. The ground floor level was specially designed to house Blackpool's bus station on it’s ground floor and did so for many years, it’s ceiling height could easily accommodate double decker buses.

The building was more or less immediately requisitioned by the Air Ministry at the outbreak of the War in 1939.

The building has a steel and concrete frame. Its entry/exit ramp has a slope of 1 in 7.5. For internal circulation, there are circualr spiral ramps. These have a slope of only 1 in 10, which makes this an easier car park to use than many of its recent descendants. The whole building was extended on its western side in later years by the addition of sloping floors, and, more recently, it has been reclad.

The designer of the car park, G.W. Stead was an employee of the Blackpool Corporation. During construction, the Borough Surveyor, James Drake (later knighted), had to obtain council approval for the additional cost of vibrating the concrete for the 460mm thick basement walls — a technique now considered standard practice.

No longer the bus station, the ground floor has been converted to commercial space.

Fully refurbished last year it won the "best refurbished car park award 2014", another building with it’s own story to tell that has found new life.
