Meatballs and spaghetti at an Ego restaurant, April 2012. // Lihapullia ja spaghettia Ego-ketjun ravintolassa, huhtikuu 2012.
Wasn't expecting Meatballs cosplay - 'Morty' saw the recognition dawn on my face and gave a nod of satisfaction. They had a little fake campfire, and gave me a marshmallow (and a drink offer, wouldn't be Meatballs without boozing counselors). I didn't even realize the woman giving out the marshmallow was in Camp North Star cosplay too, I was so overcome with 80s cable-tv nostalgia at the sight of 'Morty'
my garlicky meatballs, for about 1 lb meat...
take 2 slices bread (any kind), rip into pieces in a bowl and pour over about a 1/2 c milk and a few big pinches of salt. let sit. meanwhile, chop a large onion and mince LOTS of garlic. minced celery and/or carrot is nice too, if you want, at this point. sautee onion in olive oil til softened and light brown, adding salt, red pepper flakes and other spices at the beginning (thyme, rosemary, basil). towards end, add about 1/2 of garlic and cook til it's fragrant and softened. thouroughly combine the onion mixture with the bread-milk, breaking up all the bread (use your hands). add the ground meat (pork, not too lean beef, or a mix) and the rest of the raw garlic, combine thouroughly. fry up a tiny patty of the mixture to check the seasoning, correct if needed. eat these with pasta or plain!

Comensoli's Italian Bistro & Bar
(Kalamazoo, MI)
Savoury lamb meatballs with tangy barberries, oriental spices and lots of fresh green herbs. Simply browned in a frying pan and take them without the sauce on a picnic or outing.
The Ikea here does not sell the delicious horsemeat balls like they do in Europe. Here they are pictured with gravy, lingonberry sauce and veggie patties.
