I was just about to pack my gear in my car when I saw this beautiful picture in front of me. Everywhere else, the maple leaves where being blown away by city workers clearing the sidewalks, but this spot hadn't been touch. This last picture ended up being the best picture of the day.
Sugar maple, and bike, along path, typical color for Saline at this time of the year, October 2010.
This is a relatively, unknown path.
This is down the hill from the previous picture. (Well, the previous house in Whitney, not the swamp which is more than 200 miles further South.)

就是會有些悲傷的歌讓人流淚
情歌啊!老是如此
撩撥起人的心
讓人傾訴愛的話語
There'll be sad songs to make you cry
Love songs often do
They can touch the heart of someone new
Saying I love you, I love you
There'll be sad songs to make you cry - Billy Ocean
Sometimes I wonder by the look in your eyes
When I'm standing beside you
There's a fever burning deep inside
Is there another in your memory
Do you think of someone
When you hear that special melody
I always stop and think of you especially
When the words of the love songs
Touch the very heart of me
*There'll be sad songs to make you cry
Love songs often do
They can touch the heart of someone new
Saying I love you, I love you
I often wonder how it could be
You loving me
Two hearts in perfect harmony
I'll count the hours until that day
A rhapsody play a melody for you and me
Until the moment that you give your love to me
You're the one I care for
The one that I will wait for (*)
Maple in Nara Park
在奈良公園一條以紅楓景色知名的小河溝旁,有些楓樹枝條倒垂在水面上,楓葉的倒影將河面染成美麗的紅色。
Nearby a small ditch in the Nara Park, the sticks of the maple trees hanging down to the water, the reflection of the maple leaves renders the water surface beautiful red.

This past week I spent with my husband in the yard. We laid bark, planted flowers...and chased MILLIONS and MILLIONS of maple helicopters that have fallen from the 55 year old maple trees (2) in our front yard.
I am that neighbor (sorry Echo) who has been firing up the leaf blower every day to get rid of the damn things! I climbed up on a ladder with my blower to get the seeds out of the gutters (where they have overflowed!). I've even blown the crunchy buggers off the neighbors' driveway because our trees left a blanket of helicopters 1" deep!!
The seeds have almost all fallen now...last week must have been "harvest" for our type of maple. From what I have read, the weather plays a large part in helicopter/seed quantity. Also, producing large crops of seeds in some years means large predator numbers are not supported in the off years. That allows more seeds to survive and go on to eventual germination in years that crops are heavy.
In any case, this is BY FAR the largest crop of seeds we've had since moving to this house in 1986. Damn...
I wanted to use a photo of the PILES of helicopters for this week. Instead, I'm using this shot of my recently planted impatiens (you can see blurry seeds in the background) with a leggy visitor... :-)

Cold nights, warmer days - perfect for collecting the sap from maple trees. We passed this small stand of maples as we drove through the countryside near Casselman. Most commercial maple syrup makers use tubes that bring the sap to the sugar shack for cooking. Here the trees have been tapped in the traditional way - spigots and buckets. There is nothing quite like the aroma of sap being boiled down. Maple syrup, maple toffee on fresh snow, maple sugar - all have a heavenly taste.
