The bright red flowers resemble those of a bottle-brush.
These plants prefer full sun, protected from drying winds. They are not reliable frost hardy. These plants are best grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse or at least brought inside for the winter.

A Black-crowned Night Heron in a maple tree.
The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), commonly abbreviated to just Night Heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia (where replaced by the closely related Rufous Night Heron, with which it has hybridized in the area of contact).

Around 3 p.m. three days after the late winter snow storm that caused school cancellations Tuesday and Wednesday. Maple syrup makers depend on the surging temperatures of this time of year when the sap stored in the roots begins to rise up in the warm sunny afternoons, but then returns down the trunk at night when temperatures drop below freezing again. This pulse of rising and falling fills the sap buckets drop by drop. It takes about 40 gallons of the minimally sweet raw sap to boil down to 1 gallon of maple syrup, currently priced at $50-$70 per gallon. To make maple sugar candy, more boiling is required to evaporate the remaining fluid. Besides sugar and water, there are also trace minerals in the healthful tree juice. Curiously, the sap of bettula (birch) trees is bottled in 200ml sizes for sale in Hokkaido, the large northern island of Japan. Possibly birch sap is also drunk in the former Soviet Union, among other northern places. From experience I can say the birch sap is strangely refreshing with a very mild warming sensation following the drink. The same is true when plucking sap icicles from the tips of maple branches on the occasion when sap is dripping but then freezes into small icicles of sap.

Aren’t these three little trees adorable? They’re casting such a lovely shadow on the deck! I just hope there’s enough space for them to grow!

I have decided that this must be the Maple tree flower... When the leaves start to bud out, these will fall off and I can say from experience that they really make a mess ;-D
