27 minutes in pitch black can give you some wild looking photos.

>Week 2-52 Project 52-2016 by PhotoWalk, Dublin, Ireland - Theme - Selfie.

> Week 2/52/2016; 2016 Edition - Theme Dark. I have used a Selfie image. Changed my mind and decided to rejoin this Group for another year after seeing all the wonderful and inspirational images by others.

I had an idea of how I would do this Selfie. I never quite managed to get a good balance between light and dark. Did some post editing in Lightroom. I took the photo at night and turned off the lights in the room with just some light coming in. I mounted the camera on my Manfrotto 190 tripod and used my new Hahnel HRN280 wired shutter release. I used my Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8. I mounted my Nikon SB900 on an off camera Flash Tripod stand and fired flash on manual setting through a white umbrella. It was my first time to use the Flash Tripod stand since my SB900 Flash fell off it and broke a few months ago.

“Siwan” connotes equilibrium.

The arrangement of elements in a composition to achieve visual equilibrium.

A perfect balance of physical forces such that when two or more forces act upon a body, the body remains at rest.

In geology, a balance between form and process, e.g., between the resistance of rocks along a river and the erosional force of the water.

“Like a sufi poetry and Christian mysticism of dark ages and burning inquisitions, a Sherpa across mountains of history”.

“Siwan is a musical imagination. The word Siwan is connected to the number three, triangular or equilibrium in various living and nonliving languages”.

One of ECM’s finest releases. Ever.

**UPDATE** - 2011-MAY-13

Since this photo I posted a few months ago, I've already added a few more gems to my bag. I now have 4x Alienbees B800's instead of 2 shown in the photo. I have a Canon 24-70mm 2.8L, Canon 85mm f/1.2, two more spider holsters (so 4 total now), and 2x new carbon fiber manfrotto tripods.

The best way to list everything in this photo would be to use notes. So make sure (on flickr) you run your mouse over the photo to see the notes tagged in the image.

You can download the original, un-resized version here, its 26MB, and 18045x13255 pixels:

Strobist Info: 300w with shoot through umbrella on left and right. each item shot separately on white floor then merged in photoshop.

My Favorite "Must Have" accessories from above:

1. Manfrotto 244RC Variable Friction Magic Arm

2. Manfrotto 122B & 003 Backlight stand (mini foldable lightstand)

3. Manfrotto Superclamps

4. Photoflex Telescopic Litedisc Holder (For Lights), at least 1, you don't need 4. I bought 4 cause I loved it so much and I have only used maybe 2 at a time.

5. RadioPopper JrX

6. Tamrac 5788 Evolution 8 Backpack (This is the brown backpack in the upper left corner, I took this on a vacation and was able to fit 2 DSLRs, 9 lenses including the 70-200, 1 Macbook Air, 2 iPads, Batteries and chargers, GoPros, Memory card readers and cards, RadioPoppers, 2x Speedlites, and more. That backpack fits a BUNCH of stuff)

7. Spider Holsters, especially if you ever use 2 cameras at the same time, in that case, get 2.

8. Eneloop Batteries

This favorites list of course does not included lenses, lights or cameras. If I had to only choose a couple lenses, I would choose the 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro and the 16-35mm, (The 15mm Fisheye is great too). If I had to only keep a couple lights, I'd keep the speedlites cause they are portable. If I had to choose 1 camera, it would be the 5D Mark II.

Happy Macro Monday everyone, anyone who has ever adjusted their Manfrotto tripod should recognise this star!

Amazed by the details you can see in a macro image, the machining marks on the bottom of the tool are hardly noticeable to the naked eye (mine anyway).

99% of my images as handheld. In fact, the only shot I took with my tripod was a image of a mango.

I like to take too many macros for me to be handholding the camera, so I finally took out my tripod today

(dust included) and set it up outside to take some pictures of the garden. Before I could put the camera on the tripod, this yellow moth decided to use the tripod first. I could not leave the yard for equipment so I did my best to shoot this without him flying off before I captured him.

Next on my wishlist - macro lens.

Previously restricted to friends, as I reshot this from a new angle, I used it in my current exhibition, and I want to make sure I keep some photos back as new "unseen" work.

Basically the night started out nicely, just above 10degrees, and the sky was crystal clear.

I called up my ever keen photo companion, and we quickly decided that we'd make the (seemingly never-ending) trek up the hill to the fort. By the time we got to the top, I was sucking air as quickly as I could, and we realised very quickly what we were facing...

The wind was absolutely howling. A couple of gusts really had me staggering, so the only way I could get a shot was to splay the legs of the tripod as close to the ground as I could, leave the arm of the tripod out horizontally, and counterweight the end of the arm by hanging my bag (straps tied together) for stability. Then it was just a case of finding somewhere to shelter for the next 45 minutes as this was exposing. The shelter came curtesy of another part of the forts outer wall which was still standing.

So we hunkered down, cracked a beer, laid back and shot the breeze.

Photographed circa. 1991 / LUBITEL 166 B TLR with LOMO T-22, 75mm/4.5 lens. Film was ILFORD HP5 metered ASA 400 developed in Jessops Econotol (no details available). The negative was laid flat on a light box and photographed with a PENTAX k3 DSLR fitted with a EL NIKKOR 63mm/2.8 enlarging lens on a 25mm extension tube.A PENTAX K mount to PENTAX M42 adaptor and a 39mm/42mm ring were used to connect the NIKKOR lens and extension tube to the DSLR. The camera and lens system were supported on a sturdy copy stand via a Manfrotto 454 micro metric sliding plate and the shutter was released remotely to minimise camera shake due to vibration. The image was uploaded to an iPad mini and was edited using Snap Seed application on the iPad : the 'curves' facility in the Snap Seed app was used to reverse the image from negative to positive as shown here.

Old & new, combined, ... I love this stuff

All my microscope objective focus stacks (mostly above 5x) were taken with this gear & setup.

Stanier Black 5 44767 'George Stephenson' stands in the rain at Weybourne station on a 92 Squadron Charter Freight.

Not the kind of weather we had hoped for but you have to embrace the conditions and for this I loaded a roll of Agfa 32 asa Dia Direct Black and white reversal (slide) film. Very seldom I used it in film days but it had a very warm look to it with excellent tonal gradation.

This was taken at a low angle utilising my Manfrotto 055 PRO tripod and has I think produced a pleasing image.

This is my preferred "old school" tripod.

I have tried an expensive carbon fiber tripod with a ball head and others. A tripod is an essential photographic accessory for any photographer who takes their photography seriously, especially for one who uses telephoto or macro lenses. It stabilizes the camera, replaces a wobbly photographer, and frees the photographer’s hands. But, I never found one tripod that was sturdy enough and was compatible with any task. There are many photographers who think a Vibration Reduction lens replaces a tripod, but a VR lens cannot be used for every situation that a tripod can be, except where prohibited by local rules and regulations. Until I bought this tripod, I was never satisfied.

Many years ago, I bought a pre-owned basic Manfrotto 190D tripod, with its #029 MK2 head, as I was walking past and I saw it in the window of a used camping and hiking gear store, in downtown Hobart. I paid $99 for it and there was no room for negotiating. I have never regretted buying this tripod. The head was frozen in place, but I disassembled it, cleaned it up, polished the internal surfaces with 000 grit sand paper and fine steel wool and applied a light lubricant, then reassembled it. It looks and works like new. I would not trade it for any other tripod on the market. “You get what you pay for” does not always apply.

……..devo capire,

Perché io e te siamo giunti alla…..fine.

Dimmelo ancora, voglio sentirlo dire da te,

chi ha infranto la mia speranza…. in tutti questi anni.

Chi giace con te……nella notte,

mentre io me ne sto qui….da solo,

ricordando, quando ero……. tuo

Ti lascio andare, ti lascio volare, ma

perché,….. continuo a chiedermi,….. una spiegazione

Ti lascerò andare, adesso…. che ho trovato….,

il modo di gestire in qualche modo,…..

qualcosa di più di una…… promessa infranta.

Dimmi le parole che mai ho pronunciato,

mostrami le lacrime che non versasti,

dammi la possibilita!!!.......

Quello che promettesti…… essere mia

o,…. è svanito per sempre

Ti lascio andare, ti lascio volare, ma

perché,….. continuo a chiedermi,….. una spiegazione

Ti lascerò andare, adesso…. che ho trovato….,

il modo di gestire in qualche modo,…..

qualcosa di più di una…… promessa infranta.

Chiudo i miei occhi e sogno di te e me,

e,..... mi rendo conto,……

che c’è molto di più da amare che amarezza e bugie

Chiudo i miei occhi.

Darei la mia anima

per…. poterti stringere ancora una volta,

e non far finire quei momenti.

Ti lascio andare, ti lascio volare, ma

perché,….. continuo a chiedermi,….. una spiegazione

Ti lascerò andare, adesso…. che ho trovato….,

….broken vow

.

Tell me his name, I want to know

The way he looks and where you go

I need to see his face

I need to understand

Why you and I came to an end.

Tell me again, I want to hear

Who broke my faith in all these years

Who lays with you at night

While I'm here all alone

Remembering when I was your own

I let you go, I let you fly

Why do I keep on asking why

I'll let you go now that I've found

A way to keep somehow

More than a broken vow

Tell me the words I never said

Show me the tears you never shed

Give me the touch

The one you promised to be mine

Or has it vanished for all time

I let you go, I let you fly

Why do I keep on asking why

I'll let you go now that I've found

A way to keep somehow

More than a broken vow

I close my eyes and dream of you and I

And then I realize

There's more to love than only bitterness and lies

I close my eyes

I'd give away my soul

To hold you once again

{And never let those moments end

I let you go, I let you fly

Now that I know, I’m asking why

I’ll let you go now that I've found

A way to keep somehow

More than a broken vow
