an earlier shot from the summit of catbells in the lake district, uk. some lovely hues as the sun rose catching some moody clouds above skiddaw and blencathra.
A photo of the moon with my brand new secondhand, nikkor 300mm (+ 1,7 teleconverter) shot on manfrotto tripod. I really love this lens it’s has a bit of a learning curve to it, but I’m getting comfortable with it, and surly it will get me a lot of great photograph’s! Hopefully you have a great weekend and thanks for visiting my photo’s!
I fired off a very quick shot of Thornton Force whilst leading a workshop in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales in early January. It was fast approaching the end of the day and the light was fading. fast.
I love waterfalls and the natural s-curve of the river that flows from it made for an ideal composition.
Have a great Thursday evening everyone.

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

Captured during a week spent on the magical island of Lewis and in particular Harris mid-January 2017. It is fair to say that the weather was at times 'challenging', some would even say 'difficult' but I just see it as an opportunity to photograph atmospheric images.
On arriving at Mangersta, a short walk across boggy moorland took me to the edge of this quite simply amazing cliff edge where the view is mind blowing. It very much reminded me of my four visits down the Great Ocean Rd in Victoria, Australia that I drove way back in 2003 when I spent a year backpacking over there.
There's something quite magical about seeing sea stacks rise out of the water for me. Perhaps the constant battle between sea and rock with only one eventual winner. The wonderful v-shaped mainland that I used to frame the stacks sets up the composition a treat to my mind and the colour of the water is genuine and has to be seen to be believed. An outstanding island and one that I cannot wait to return to..
What do you think?
I am running a six day workshop to Lewis and Harris in October if anyone is interested, please contact me. infor@melvinnicholson.co.uk

Adult birds in summer have short red legs and a short black bill (small and stubby, meausuring 22–25 mm from the feathers, decidedly shorter than the head), a black neck (often with a pale gray back) and belly, very dark grey back, with a white rump and light grey (almost white) tail, which often looks 'square' in juveniles. A vagrant in iceland and a new lifer for me no. 163

This Manfrotto tripod was bought by my parents in the beginning of the 90's with the video camera on it. I remember it quite well from my childhood and now it has been given a new life as I bought a DSLR recently. Strange how some things seem to be affected by time and others seemingly not.
Beautiful hike with my pops yesterday at the peak district ,this shot was taken during a break in the clouds waiting for the moment to light up the landscape.

People wait, either for comet NEOWISE, or for the sun to set.
While waiting to photograph comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE, I took some time to test out my gear on a sunset. The hill at the centre of McLennan Park, colloquially known as Mount Trashmore, is one of the higher points within the city of Kitchener's boundaries, and is a popular spot for people to watch the sunset.

i was unsure if it was worth going out this morning but once i opened my eyes i couldnt sleep, so ventured out to a place that i struggle with at the best of times.the weather was as it usually is when i land here.plenty of cloud, choppy water and no colour what so ever. i wasnt going to waste my early start so made the most of what was in front of me.
Forest and fog in the morning.
Forest in Switzerland. Nikon D3200, Manfrotto Compact Action, Lightroom 5.
Reflections at Grand Canal Dock, Dublin, Ireland at night.
It was a clear calm night so excellent conditions for reflections.

The timing of this one had to be perfect and after almost two years in the planning this is the shot I've had in my head since the last time we visited Arches National Park.
We headed up this short but strenuous hike during the heat of the afternoon sun. When we arrived, there were a good couple of hundred people all waiting for the sunset as this is one of the most iconic sights in the whole park.
Some just sitting and watching and some frantically running around trying to get the best spot for a photo. There was one group of Japanese guys who just couldn't make their mind up and were backwards and forwards with all their gear pretty much non stop. Inevitably the outcome of all this faffing around was that one guy, who obviously hadn't attached his camera to his tripod properly the previous time he moved all his gear, managed to drop his camera a good 150 feet down a steep rock face directly in front of us, it made an awful sound as it tumbled towards its death in the bushes below. The ironic thing about it was that his whole camera body and lens were covered in a camouflage housing meaning that he couldn't find it when he went down to retrieve it!
After sunset most people started to head off back down while we took up our pre-determined position carefully calculated using the photopills app many weeks beforehand.
We knew we then had to wait until 10pm when the moon had just dipped below the horizon and the Milky way had appeared directly above the Arch.
Lots of people were shining lights at the arch taking their own shots while we sat patiently waiting.
Just before 10pm there was just 3 of us left so I set up my manfrotto lights on their lowest setting, one about 150 feet away to the right and one about 60 feet to the left, both with 1/2 CTO filters.
And there it was, the shot I'd had in my head for nearly two years came to life on the back of the camera.
This is a six shot vertical panorama of the stunning Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, Moab. My spiritual home!
Enjoy!
I have this nice Manfrotto 190 XPRO4 tripod but I so rarely actually use it. I know I should but I just haven't the discipline and I havent the resolve to develop the discipline.
But I am using it today.

Sunset over Amadores Beach,Puerto Rico,Gran Canaria, taken from the headland above the Gloria Palace Amardores back in November 2016.Taken with my Panasonic LX5 mounted on a Manfrotto Pixi tripod. This image has not had much in the way of processing, just a slight sharpening and shadow adjustment.
Thanks for taking the time to view this and other images in my photo stream.
