Get nice and close

Another shot from the Vivid Sydney festival. A fairly cliche composition of the Sydney Opera House but none the less one of my favourites. I love how something as simple as a coloured pattern can change the look of something so dramatically, well at least I think it does!

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge on loan from the lovely folks at Samsung and Work.

This was taken with the phone mounted to my DSLR Tripod using the Manfrotto Universal Smartphone clamp (www.manfrotto.co.uk/products/for-phones-and-action-cams/s...)

6x10 second images of the sky and one of the house were used to create this single image.

I'm pretty impressed with the night shooting quality of the camera, for such a small sensor the noise levels are quite low.

Here he is!!!! Me and my trusty Mr Manfrotto, hes heavy, hes had a few injuries, but he is reliable as hell and him and I have had lots of fun together. He always needs carrying home, but doesnt even complain when I bungee tie him to my bike rack, or stand him in the river.

Can I get a HELL YEAH!!! For making it to the half way point!!! Its been fun so far and I have lots more ideas, days that I thought I just couldnt do anything turn out to be days that you love the photos, you never know!!

God love Mr Manfrotto!

I only saw this when I had finished for the day and was heading back to the car.

I wish I had cleared some of the foliage away from the door and removed some of the larger elements from the foreground.

I wanted it to look at though it was in regular use.

I'll revisit with lessons learned another day.

Image taken in a large meter square light box with glass as the base for the crystal wine glasses. Canon 5D used for this image mounted on a sturdy Manfrotto 055 CB tripod. Image lit by two Canon 580EX flashes fired (camera mounted Canon Speedlite wireless remote transmitter ST-E2 was used) contre-jour and just under the line of the subject.

This image was taken as part of a major photographic study we are currently doing during the winter months looking at experimental images of glassware, contre-jour lighting, translucence and fluids of different types.

This is my simple(ish) solution to connecting the new Orbis (fantastic bit of kit) to your camera. I generally like to use a monopod anyway for steadying my shots, so I have combined it with the Orbis to give what I think is a fairly professional result.

The items used are a Manfrotto monopod (but could be any) an adjustable quick release head, a light stand to portable flash connector and a manfrotto super-clamp. The beauty of it is that it all fits together without any modifications. The above setup can also be used on a tripod.

Lots of gear complicates things. So, to carry only one tripod on an outing with various lenses and subjects, I modified several items for one, do-it-all, tripod arrangement. The whole issue is around the concept of a 'gimble' and versatility. Gimbles are used basically for large, heavy lenses but I wanted this to be for 'everything'! This setup is a Promaster gimble mount to which I've added several things. The gimble allows 3 dimensional steady shooting and is good for heavy lenses, and I think it will be good for movies, too, as well as a general tripod. I modified a Manfrotto long lens cradle, and then attached a promaster ball camera mount to the platform of the Manfrotto item which I then attached to the gimble. Quick release mounts were used for the interface between gimble and mount and between mount and camera. I can get vertical and horizontal positions and everything in between. The Manfrotto modification was/is necessary to get the left-side camera body away from the upright portion of the gimble' upright. A separate piece could have been made but I converted The Manfrotto piece I already had. Elevating the camera allows the camera to turn on either on the ball head to which it is mounted, or, alternately, from the gimble control--2 ways depending on what you get used to or perhaps what you are shooting. My Nikon D810 will do movies. If I had an opportunity to capture movement in a smooth and professional fashion while taking stills, why not??? I do shoot one heavy telephoto, one about 7 lbs [old Questar 700], and everything in between down to 14-24mm wide angle and up to about 1200 mm telephoto. For me, and I'm still getting used to it, the smoothness of the gimble is pleasant, and it can be 'locked' into position, or loosened for a more steady flow on moving objects, again for longer lenses and movies. The Promaster gimble is very smooth in movement and is significantly less expensive than the name brands. Mine cost about $140 in Topeka, Kansas. Others are well above $500.

I bought a new stand to replace this old warhorse. The new one is 100 kg lighter and adjusting the camera head is 10 times easier. In the battle of feelings, the new one will be seriously inferior.
