The storm was approaching, however, out of laziness and because I was afraid of ruining my equipment under the pouring rain, I did not go out and instead I waited for the storm at home.

I frame the picture and I waited, until finally, the lightning happend! I shot as soon as I saw the first ray, and kept the shutter open for the whole lightning.

Just to the left of the well-known Big Sur Pfeiffer Beach arch/portal, there is a gap between two very large rock/cliff formations which allows water and sea mist to stream through. I saw this while everyone was over shooting the portal. Even in an iconic spot, look around for something new. No HDR, though it would be interesting to do it here.

The Story

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I mentioned before, even though Pfeiffer beach is a winding and vertically oriented 45 minute drive south of Monterey/Carmel in Central California, there were about 20 photographers out here on a Thursday evening trying to capture this famous place during the Dec.-Jan. window when the sun streams through the opening at the best angle. This place is 30 miles from nowhere too. I have not seen a good shot of this particular phenomenon as well as goo dviews of another cave further to the left of here and I really wanted to do something new with this place. I got a very nice shot of the cave too which I'll share later. It is very mysterious looking and the rock formations are incredible.

Here as with the portal, the trick was to wait for the sea mist to stream though when the breeze turned to come from the sea. A slight offshore breeze was making the mist disappear so I had to wait for about 10 minutes, but I had an idea of what I wanted. Finally it happened!

This was low tide at sunset, but even then sometimes the waves were too big and the light would hit the frothing water and it would become blown-out. So I tried different angles and various wave timing techniques before I finally got a shot that I liked after about 15 minutes of trying. I wanted to get a lot of light in here to show the unusual Tafoni sandstone formations on the cliffs but that often meant that the water would become blown-out! Sometimes you just have to keep trying and trying.

The map shows the exact location.

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.

Not really the best time of day for LE photography but armed with my filters I could still get a one minute exposure. Tripod seems really sturdy and easy to use so happy I made the purchase.

I know I've took the shot a few times before but its local and handy.

This image was captured several weeks ago on what was possibly my last Milky Way Core shoot of 2020.

2020 has not afforded many Milky Way sessions, mainly either because clear nights falling on the wrong moon cycles or more notably due to the Covid19 lock-down restrictions that were imposed back in March. So needless to say, that I was super excited to be back out under the stars and the night sky again.

This location certainly had a bit of eeriness about it. Standing out on location under the dark of the night sky and surrounded by rustling bushes, horses/cattle making noises and other weird random noises all made for an unsettling experience on one hand. But that unsettling feeling was totally trumped by the sense of pure awe of both standing there next to these old castle ruins that have stood the test of time from when they were first erected during more ancient times here in Ireland as well standing under the ancient lights of the Milky Way galaxy above.

This is my 84th photograph to be selected, which for me is both amazing and exciting, as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the awesome photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to every one of the 15.0 Million people who have visited, favourite and commented on this and all of my other photographs here on my FLICKR site. *****

This image, like the previous one, will be part of "reportage story" I have in preparation and will be titled "Stolen Innocence." The image and the result of a happy ending after a child who suffered beatings and abuse with violence and deprivation of food has recovered and is waiting to go live with another family.

I wanted to renew the warm thanks to the wonderful and friendly tutor who was very kind and helpful which I appreciated very much especially the love with which they carry out their commitment to children and a special thank you also and especially to Mother Sister Serafina.

L’innocenza rubata

.

In quel mondo in cui tu vivevi,

dove ostili erano pure i sorrisi,

c’era quella gente che tu credevi,

ti potessero essere….vicini.

Non c’erano carezze, ne baci,

ne abbracci e momenti belli, ma

di quel tenero amor preteso, erano

spesso solo torture e strazianti spaventi.

Stolen Innocence

.

In that world where you lived,

where the smiles were even hostile,

was that people who you believed,

you could be. ... neighbors.

There were no stroke, kisses it,

it hugs and good times, but

of that tender love demanded, were

often only torture and agonizing fears.

But suddenly those beautiful colors, that

gleamed with your candid thoughts

vanished from your delicate and palpitating heart,

sinking into your silent cries of pain.

The bitter your fate, for many near you,

unfortunately, is to duty, or be

a small, helpless and fragile child,

which ripped, stolen innocence is

under the eyes, often full of indifference.

The snow bunting is a medium size passerine bird. This passerine is a ground-dwelling species that walks, runs and could potentially jump if needed. It is fairly large and long-winged for a bunting. It measures 15 cm with a wingspan of 32–38 cm (13–15 in) and weights 30 to 40 grams. The bill is yellow with a black tip, and is all black in summer for males. The plumage is white in the underparts and the wings and back have black and white on them. The female and male have a different plumage.

Common greenshanks are brown in breeding plumage, and grey-brown in winter. When in water, they can appear very similar to marsh sandpipers but are distinguished by the shape of the lower bill which gives it an upturned appearance to the bill. They have long greenish legs and a long bill with a grey base. They show a white wedge on the back in flight. They are somewhat larger than the related common redshank. It´s a vagrant in Iceland and a new lifer for me species no. 155.

After getting a really cheap, plasticy and unstable Monopod i decided to spend some money on something that would be much better.

So when i one day went to my local photo store i found this excellent model, its super stable!, built like a tank and worth the price i paid!

So the lesson is if you find a cheap and crappy monopod dont waste your hard earned money on it! Get the stuff that may cost a little more but will make you feel SO much better!

Thought I'd share my current extreme Collembola macro set up with you. Yes it is heavy and is a bit awkward to handle, but I would only really use this kit close to the ground or on a stable working surface. With this I can achieve about x10 with a full frame camera or x16 on an APS-C camera. I have the flash mounted with a Manfrotto 233B Camera Flash Bracket, I decided to have this attached to the main body of the camera, the reason being to spread the weight around a bit, I could use my smaller bracket and flash mounted to my MP-E foot, but I was concerned about putting too much weight on the lens. The whole purpose of the above is to try and photograph the smaller Collembola in better detail :0)

Anyway, I have yet to try this 3x extension tube set in the field, the set up feels fairly stable and should be OK for handling, as for finding my subject in the view finder, that could prove tricky. I hope to be trialing the above set up over the next few weeks, I also chop and change with extension tubes, for example the 1.4x teleconverter and 36mm works well and x2 36mm extension tubes works well, as does x2 full extension tube sets, you just have to remember to adjust the aperture accordingly. I have included some component images in the comments :o)

Any improvement ideas to my set ups appreciated, I hope to get the MT-24EX Flash at some point, also the 1.4x Teleconverter MKIII is supposed to be excellent and yes I still have my Nikon D7000 :o)
