We have many little dragonflies in the garden at the moment, but most times it is just two different species - this colour and a grey/green colour. I love the colours of the background in these photos and as you can see, it came from the garden hose laying on the grass.

We arrived home safely this evening and although the landing was a little scary (first time ever in all of our trips) we touched down on the second attempt. There were gale force winds in Sydney today and the first landing was aborted due to something that had been blown onto the runway. The second was a bit bumpy but my hat goes off to the wonderful pilots who land planes in all conditions.

Winter will soon be here in Australia and the weather is beginning to cool down. Today it was warmer outside than it was inside, so I ventured around to my neighbour's garden. I spotted this tiny Neon Cuckoo Bee buzzing around and it decided to stay for a few photos, but my battery decided to die even though I checked that it was fully charged before I left the house. I was so angry, but when I looked, I found that I had managed to get a few reasonable photos.

I have been having trouble with my batteries failing and I am inclined to think that it is the charger. I put the battery in to charge and it was saying that it was fully charged after 5 minutes - it usually takes over an hour. I put it back into the camera and took three photos before it was saying that the battery was low again. I have 5 batteries and it is happening with all of them, so I am sure it is not the battery that is at fault.

I love this variety of Grevillea that grows in my neighbour's garden. It is a dainty little flower and such a pretty colour.

Peter spoke to his dad today and he sounded a bit happier - what a relief (hope it lasts).

This rose is in my neighbour's garden. The previous owner Ron brought it from his mother's garden when she died over 50 years ago and as you can see, it is still producing beautiful roses.

Today the temperature in Sydney reached 42 C - it was a scorcher. The only saving grace was that the humidity was minimal. Peter's father is still in hospital and has been unwell, so we went to visit him and have a chat to the doctor. It wasn't too bad in the heat as we have airconditioning in the car and were in airconditioning in the hospital.

This summer my garden was invaded by an army of foxgloves

For a few minutes every day close your eyes and listen to the sound of silence

It’s so often the most beautiful music of all..

It is another lovely sunny (but cool) day here in Sydney - way too windy for macro photos though LOL. I went around to my neighbour's garden and the bugs were out and about and I did get a couple of shots that I am happy with.

I am still not ready to pick up the camera yet though as my wrist felt a lot of pain as I was walking around. Next time I will remember to wear the splint to see if it gives support.

I think this is a type of bird of paradise plant - Desert Bird of Paradise (Caesalpinia Gilliesii)

I think I may add this to my 52 weeks of photo challenge - this week's theme is Summer/Winter, depending on where you live.

I may not be on Flickr very much over the next few days as my brother is visiting for a week and he whinges a bit if I sit at the computer for long LOL. I will sneek a peek when I can though.

Amegilla cingulata, commonly known as the blue banded bee, is an Australian native bee. It belongs to the Anthophoridae family of insects. Currently, there are several scientific organisations conducting thorough research on how the blue banded bee benefits agriculture through its distinctive "buzz pollination". These bees are very important for the production of food and contribute to at least 30% of crops in Australia.

A. cingulata has a very striking appearance. Unlike the honey bee, it has pale blue stripes on its abdomen instead of yellow. The male can be distinguished by the number of complete bands, having five as opposed to the females' four. In size, A. cingulata can grow to 10–12 millimetres (0.39–0.47 in). Its appearance includes a golden brown head with bulging eyes that have multiple lenses. They have six sticky legs and a long tongue to help extract nectar from flowers. Scientists believe that male bees have brighter blue stripes to attract female bees.

Blue banded bees can sting but are not as aggressive as other bees. The males cling to plant stems during the night. Like the whole anthophoridae family, they are quick and agile. They are solitary creatures, whereas honey bees create hives.

I went down to Santa Barbara with a group of photo friends to the Butterflies Alive! exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. It was a macro lovers dream come true. This is my favorite photo as it had both the butterfly and water lilies which were in a very small pond. It's best to get there early (10:00) and walk in as the doors open.

I found out the ID of this plant - it is Sandpaper vine (Petrea volubilis).

Dedicated to Ashley1954 as a tribute to her constant presence and invitations so much appreciated

The Blue Banded Bees were going crazy in my neighbour's garden yesterday.

A must have for all macro lovers - The The hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) was still missing in my butterfly collection. The The hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is found in the Netherlands since about 10 years and migrates from the southern parts of Europe in the spring. Did not have enough time to get the shot and therefor it is difficult to avoid a motion artifact in the wings moving at super speeds.

This is a beautiful pansy - a new addition to my garden. I didn't use a tripod, but rested my camera on a bean bag and used the wireless remote to take the photo. I really hate using tripods, but I can see how easy it is to take macro shots when the camera is stable.

Hand held snap shot.

This Passion flower as now been 'sadly' destroyed !. Growing vigorously, it was almost covering the owners home.

We visited Peter's Dad today at the Central Coast and I decided to take my camera with me. I spotted this beautiful lily in a local garden.

Peter's Dad is 93.5 years old and is suffering Paget's disease in his femur. He was booked in for surgery last week to have the diseased bone (which has a crack in it) removed and replaced with a steel rod, but the anaesthesiest came around on the morning of the surgery to say that he was not happy doing the surgery due to his age and the fact that he has a heart murmur, so the surgery was postponed until a check could be done on his heart. It is terrible to see him trying to walk around in so much pain with the knowledge that the bone could snap at any time. It is such a worry for him and for the family.

this is the best crop from the original photo that I could give the macro lovers out there. It's autumn here and the other side of this flower is starting to wither away. I was just happy that the hoverfly stayed long enough for me to get a picture at all... they were very shy today!
