In a very lucky patch of sun the Northampton based gronk slowly negotiates the remaining section of the Northampton - Bedford branch as viewed from the very busy A45 overbridge!!

Trains down the branch were exceedingly rare by this stage and this may have been the last one - unless anyone knows differently.....

The wagons were en route to Geismar's for conversion into long welded rail wagons.

In a lucky patch of sunshine, 90018 "The Pride of Bellshill" races beside Morecambe Bay at Hest Bank with the 1M44 16.18 Shieldmuir-Willesden (via a reversal in Warrington) mail train, hauling Royal Mail Cl.325 units 008 "Peter Howarth CBE", 005 and 002.

A coincidental bonus from a trip up North, the Skoda was used on this working this week and the next due to an engineering blockade at Acton Grange Junction; with the Class 325 units not signed to run under the wires over its diversionary route via Chat Moss.

This morning the 6X24 unit move was halted just outside Derby, blocking the main Up Spondon line. This resulted in at least 2 southbound EMR expresses cancelled at Derby, whilst at least one XC service and one EMR service utilised the diversionary route via reversal at Stenson Jn, then traversing the branch before re-joining the original route at Trent Jns.

I just made it to Swarkestone in a very lucky patch of sun to see the latter diverted EMR service - the passengers of 222015 on the 1C37 1100 Sheffield to St Pancras travelling some very rare track for the unit! While this diversionary route is signed by drivers for such eventualities, it's still very rare on this freight-only line.

Definitely my shot of the day. Peppercorn A1 60163 ‘Tornado’ crests Houghton summit in a very lucky patch of sun. With the sun only appearing a mere 10 seconds before Tornado did. She was hauling the 1Z68 Birmingham New Street to Carlisle 'The Border Raider'.

As ever, taken from the right side of the fence.

Huge thankyou to Jack (JackTsRailPics) for taking me round Preston and showing me all these new locations.

In a lucky patch of sunshine among a very mixed day, Black 5 No. 45407 running as long scrapped classmate No. 45157 'The Glasgow Highlander' climbs past Polnish Chapel with the first Jacobite of the year to Mallaig.

Something different! Although I don't think they are destined to be used on this particular line when in service, they must be testing the new SouthWest Trains Siemens class 707 units on the line to Reading. First I heard about it was when I saw this pair flash past the office on their first run of the day! On their 2nd run, (5Q33 11:54 Staines up sidings to Reading) 707005 and 707003 pass Amen Corner in Bracknell in a by then lucky patch of sun. Friday the 24th of February 2017.

Service 12336, the 17:50 Maubeuge to Paris Nord rushes through Ribecourt station in a lucky patch of sunshine, powered by Achères allocated 15012 "Châlons sur Marne". This small town north of Compiegne has a number of busy industrial sidings, and one of the few bridges suitable for photography on the line to Maubeuge

Due to 325 units not being able to take power over Chat Moss, Class 90s have been drafted in to drag both the evening Northbound and Southbound units. 90018 passes Rugeley Trent Valley in a very lucky patch of sunshine working 1S96 1600 Willesden Railnet to Shieldmuir parcels.

With a storm hanging just behind the train is caught in a lucky patch of sunlight. I am no doubt sure I would have been drenched shortly afterwards

Didcots GWR Castle, 4079 " Pendennis Castle" climbs away from Bridgnorth and tops the summit at Eardington during Saturdays Severn Valley Railway Spring Gala. This was the first time I had photted 4079 since 1977.....before she was shipped off to Australia. Despite the leaking front end she looked and sounded wonderful on the climb from Bridgnorth, helped by a lucky patch of sunshine.

Many heads have been removed form the coaches behind in PS, apologies to those removed....

Not normally do the sun gods smile down upon me when everywhere else is in dull. However today luck was in order when chasing 50007 and 50049 working a railtour whilst substituting D9009. 50007 leading 1Z29, Edinburgh Waverly - Tweedbank through Stow in a lucky patch of sunshine. The very small Hamlet of Galabank is just behind the railtour

DBS 66095 rounds Warsett Hill at Hunt Cliff with 6F23 the 9.48am Tees Dock (Cleveland Potash) to Boulby Potash Reception empties.

Low cloud obscures the view over Tees Bay as the train catches a lucky patch of sunlight.

Despite being atop a 400' cliff a Pole is necessary to include the full length of the train!

I had visited this location two days earlier as the weatherman promised full bore sun which did not materialise. On this occasion, with a similar forecast, the weather was again gloomy to say the least upon my arrival. I was fortunate that as the train approached the cloud parted and sunlight bathed the area in the foreground. After the train passed the sun vanished not to be seen again that day.

Having waited in vain for a promising forecast, just a couple of days spent on the Mallaig extension trying to find the K1 in some sun, not surprisingly, proved a failure.

After missing out to a lucky patch on Wednesday I decided to explore a position next day that wouldn’t really work in full light. What was unexpected was the lack of white exhaust, but 17 degrees in Scotland in October seemed a bit unusual.

East Lancashire Railway Autumn Steam Gala.

In a lucky patch of blue sky visiting 9F 92134 heads away from Burrs Country Park Halt with the 13:25 Bury - Rawtenstall on the second day of the Gala. The Jinty was being dragged along at the back!

By the look and sound of it coming up over Upton Scudamore bank, today's 4O57 13.29 Wentloog-Southampton is very well loaded behind 66598, seen here in a lucky patch of sunlight that wasn't there seconds before (well look at that, sometimes these things do work in your favour not the other way around) - 10/02/22. Shame it was the opposite situation with sun one hour earlier for the NR measurement HSTs, they were a bust.

Colas 56090 heads 6M51 1623 Baglan Bay - Chirk timber train on the evening of Wednesday 29th May 2024. This was really Tuesday nights train which was cancelled due to a loco issue. A lucky patch of late evening sun for a change! Colas are stopping a number of class 56s soon however i would think small trains like the Baglan logs might remain 56 hauled. Photo: Ivan Stewart.

In a lucky patch of sun considering how dull the foreground is, 60066 works 6B33 Theale to Roberson empty tanks at Woolhampton 29.01.2020

Former Taff Vale Railway 0-6-2T, No. 85 catches a lucky patch of sunshine as it leaves Haworth on the 23rd January 2000. This loco returned to traffic in 2016, following an overhaul, but not looking like this, as it had been fully lined-out.

The lineside team have thankfully opened up this location on the East side of the line at Kinchley Lane, a view not seen for many years.

Excellent work chaps.

6990 passes and catches a rather lucky patch of sun..

An opportunity not to be missed! After testing a snow plough in the Taunton area, DRS 66304 and 66305 moved to Norwich on 24th July, but information only emerged on the morning of 28th that the same was to happen in Anglia, with a Norwich-Lowestoft trip. In a lucky patch of sun, the driver carefully looks out of the cab as 66305 leads 66304 into Oulton Broad North while working 1100 Norwich Crown Point to Norwich Crown Point via Lowestoft. The East Suffolk Line to Ipswich can be seen on the right.

6023 "King Edward II" passes the GWR semaphore signals at Swithland Sidings in a lucky patch of light.

Not had much luck recently with the awful weather and everything else, in what I can only describe as an unplanned and lucky shot in a very lucky patch of sun, 1001 heads through seer Green, working 1Z21, Aylesbury vale Parkway - West Ealing via Gerrards Cross turnback siding. The thumper visited several places not covered by the class including Aylesbury Vale Parkway, West ruislip GBRf dept, West Ealing station and the bay platform at Hayes & Harlington

A slight sense of deja vue for this image but in my defence I was expecting 90 043 + 90 048 which had worked the train from Manchester. Unfortunately they were ripped at Wembley for the pair of cans which are seen passing in a very lucky patch of sun. I had only arrived two minutes beforehand (they were already approaching Colchester 6 early when I got my phone out upon arrival on the footbridge) and it was a walk straight back home afterwards!
