In a very lucky patch of sunshine, 45699 heads a mixed rake of Mk 1s, pullmans and the Queen of Scots set away from March, seen approaching the crossing at Silt Road. Not the best location, but I figured it would be working away from March, and so it proved.

Late running today allowed for a shot here in a lucky patch of sun.
In a very lucky patch of sunlight, 67026 is seen just north of Bowshank Tunnel on 16.09.15, while working the 1Z23 14.38 Tweedbank - Edinburgh Waverley private charter. 60009 was on the rear of the train having worked the charter south from Edinburgh along the newly reopened Borders Rail Link earlier in the day.
The closure of the WCML while major upgrade work was going on at Bletchley saw the odd Saturday intermodal diverted via the Chilterns and here one coincides with a lucky patch of sun. Pathing of the freight was not easy back then as large parts of the route between Princes Risborough and Aynho Junction were still single track at the time.

The first shot from what was to be a pretty productive day, except for the 'main event' that was to pass here shortly after this view was captured, in a lucky patch of cloud. I always thought the 5-car Class 180 DMU was quite a stylish looking unit, in First Great Western blue livery. Here, No.180102 passes Hinksey lake, just south of Oxford, working a slightly late running 1P40 09:54 Great Malvern - Paddington on 04 December 2012.

I had intended to go the other side of the bridge but the farmer was in the field and I didn't want to antagonise. 82145 leads two coaches, 67003 and 82111 through Church Brampton in a lucky patch of sun on the 5Z68 Stafford-Northampton which seems to change formation on virtually every run.
With the opening of the London Gateway container terminal on the north Thames estuary situated on a former oil refinery site (so already rail connected), the Freightliner owned and operated Tilbury RCT terminal effectively lost all its rail traffic. Having been dormant for a couple of years now, rail traffic has returned in the shape of a DRS operated service to Daventry conveying Tesco and Stobart containers and swap bodies. Unusually DRS is also using the nearby Purfleet Deep Water Wharf terminal for loading traffic for Daventry in parallel. Very smart looking 66421 hauls a STP 4M07 working from Tilbury RCT to Daventry service which additionally on this day had a 2.5 hour stop over at Ripple Lane to add more traffic. 37706 making a rare outing working the Branch Line Society's 'Power Hall Tracker' charter that ran from Carnforth to the Manchester Museum Of Science & Industry, formally Manchester Liverpool Road station. 47760 was on the rear for manoeuvres and heating.
The Heavy-Weight tractor approaches the loop at Broughton as part of the tour, in a very lucky patch of sunshine. I do love the West Coast livery at this time of year, mixes in quite nicely with the colours of Autumn.
With the sky overhead looking very 50/50, it was smiles all round as DBS 60020 working 6E38 Colnbrook - Lindsey hauls the discharged consist of TDA aviation fuel bogie tanks through Kangaroo Spinney prior to running through Wellingborough station in one such lucky patch of blue.
An extremely lucky patch of sun highlights a TGV Sud-Est set as it approaches La Roche Maurice with a Paris to Brest service on 12th August 2008. With approx. 20 km to journeys end, this is the staple power this far west, the Finistère department of Brittany being devoid of virtually any freight or loco hauled passenger services. This picture was taken from the ruins of an old castle perched on top of a rocky outcrop dating back to 1263, a boarded up location and not open to the public back in 2008.
66152 'DEREK HOLMES RAILWAY OPERATOR' taken from the London end of Platform 1, the only DB Red Shed is seen under a lucky patch of sun stabled on the line that runs into the steel terminal. Having arrived into Swindon on the morning 6B49 from Llanwern steel train, the loco will later work the 6B50 back to Llanwern.

GBRf 66717 Good Old Boy powers towards Felixstowe at Gun Lane crossing near Trimley while working 4L02 0824 Wembley to Felixstowe South conveying a lightly loaded intermodal service in a lucky patch of sun.
A change of location to Greenholme on the lower slopes of Shap. In a lucky patch of sun an unidentified 86 heads north. As the stock has not been painted into Virgin Trains livery it is probably heading to Edinburgh.
Catching a lucky patch of sun on a showery afternoon GBRf 66743 rumbles under Wharfdale Road Bridge at Tyseley in Birmingham. The train was the 11.56 Westbury up T.C. to Cliffe Hill Stud Farm GBRf empty ballast working.
Under the grass and shrubs to the left, at track level, the old head shunt for Tyseley goods is still intact albeit not connected at the yard end now. When I was a youthful trainspotter the entertainment between trains was to watch one of Tyseley shed's hard-worked pannier tanks, usually 3660, 4648, 8700 or 9608, fly- shunting along that track. The engine would appear under the bridge with it's train and trundle up to the buffers which are roughly level with the end of the ballast train, then with a crow of it's whistle the little pannier would charge forward then stop suddenly. Out of sight at the yard throat a shunter would be running alongside the train with his shunters pole and he would uncouple the speeding wagon which would then roll into it's designated siding and hit, usually very loudly, whatever was in the way, the whole operation would then be repeated until all the train was split and berthed in their correct siding for unloading or loading. The damage to goods during a rough shunt must have been quite expensive.

31128 'Charybdis' - 1Z29 15.45hrs Ashton-in-Makerfield - Liverpool Lime St - Crewe BLS 'The Sunday Yicker' Railtour passes in Prescot Station in a lucky patch of sun. Seeing the Class 31 here, reminded me of the NW 'Club' 4/5 coach trains that operated on this line during the early 1990's. 9th June 2019.

In a lucky patch of Sunshine, 66585 passed Roydon Lock between Broxbourne & Bishop's Stortford at 1343 (8 late) on 28/12/18 with 4L31, the 0903 Freightliner service from Bristol to Felixstowe North, which was formed of containers (several loaded with glider fuel) on flat cars & diverted via Seven Sisters!, the West Anglia mainline & Bury St Edmunds, due to pre-planned Engineering Work.
Apparently, there was a "Wally" at Welwyn North today & it wasn't me! Hi, Baz!!

A. Only just or as Take That would say "you got have a little patience", thanks to a "lucky patch of sun" [the cloud had been "bubbling up", ever since I left home two hours earlier, but I won't make a mountain out of a molehill!!!!) & a pair of Buzzards, circuling overhead a few minutes earlier!
With fine weather forecast next week, will I be well enough to get the tour bus out & if I'am, will there be anything to phot?

6B01 the 10.40am Embsay to Bolton Abbey demonstration Permanent Way train catches a lucky patch of morning sun headed by D8110.

Red amongst the green. 66150, in DB red, leads the morning Mossend Euroterminal to Tees Dock BSC Export Berth (4E96) intermodal working through Longniddry in a lucky patch of sun. The July weather has not been condusive to getting lineside so this was refreshing to get out.
DBC EWS liveried 66025 approaches Portchester station (in a lucky patch of sun) with the diverted 4O30 VAR 15:41 Morris Cowley M.A.T. to Southampton Eastern Docks loaded car train on the 25th July 2020. The train was loaded with brand new BMW Minis for export and was diverted via Reading, North Camp, the Portsmouth Direct Line and the Fareham to Southampton line due to engineering work at Eastleigh. Another rather late notice engineering blockade was put in by Network Rail so they could install the second set of new points at Eastleigh (the points connecting Platform 3 to the Down Fast line) after they were removed back in February due to the damage caused by the derailment of 70001 on 4O05 at the end of January.

Not my first choice of location but I only just made this, 67018 leads set BN17 and 91112 on the 5Y04 1110 Newcastle to Bounds Green Depot at Offord Cluny crossing in a lucky patch of hazy sun.
Friday nights 6O27 Mountsorrel - Eastleigh was recessed over the weekend at Bescot due to the Banbury - Oxford blockade. On Sunday GBRf 66720 is seen at Spetchley in a lucky patch of sun with the diverted 6O27 Bescot - Eastleigh loaded aggregates. Sadly, the originally booked 6V82 cement and the normally reliable 6E47 steel didn't run which was disappointing and hopes of a Sunday nights full house evaporated as quickly as they arrived! What is it with freight in these parts these days?
It was only fair recompense that after spending 2.5 hours waiting at Dullingham for this train and then giving up despite knowing it was only 10 minutes behind my train as I didn't want to spend another 2 hours festering there that I should get this in an incredibly lucky patch of sun.
I prefer this wider, more distant, view as it includes the hay bales in the freshly harvested fields.
Thanks to the derailment of 4Z33 at Ely West Junction the previous day blocking the Ely - March line freight booked across country was either cancelled or routed via the ECML and GEML. This service was an exception and following a run round in Welwyn Garden City yard was routed via Cambridge and Newmarket. Unfortunately it left Peterborough very late despite an on time arrival and was an hour late leaving Welwyn which meant it missed its booked slot over the single track from Coldham Lane Junction in Cambridge to Chippenham Junction. So the last freight I have photographed at Dullingham still remains a diverted liner 26 years ago!

Ten years ago today Alabama Southern's eastbound manifest to Tuscaloosa stops to work the small feed elevator at Gordo in far west Alabama., and catches a lucky patch of sun on an otherwise cloudy morning. Those fall blooming Goldenrods match nicely with the Watco paint on their quartet of SD40-2s.
Brand new and newly formed, 458534 catches a lucky patch of sun on the Depot. ED's 73235 and 73133 can be seen to the left of the frame. The 458 was at Bournemouth for some Tests and later headed back to Wimbledon Park

90002 "Wolf of Badenoch" passes Cathiron with the chairman's train in a very lucky patch of sun on 1Z44 Dent to London Euston. The Skoda worked the train from Preston.
The Queen and Prince Phillip had enjoyed some rare track by spending the night asleep on the Royal Train at Howe & Co Sidings - a pleasantly remote and peaceful rural location - before attending three engagements in the Dales. The royal pairing had alighted from the train at Kirkby Stephen for their first visit, the train worked by the pairing of 47 850 and 47 845. They had then worked the ecs to Preston from where 47 850 was unfortunately removed, 47 845 was then left to initially work the ecs to Carlisle Upperby, seen here in a lucky patch of sun climbing Shap.
Not so lucky were the Queen and Phil, who were late for the concert in Glasgow they were due to attend. After reboarding the Royal Train at Carlisle, the Duff then conked out on Beattock to the embarrassment of all. I am not sure what rescued the train, but the concert started very late! They should have left the pair on with hindsight!
