The SRPS 'Capital Highlander' with 37403 and 37409 from Carlisle to Inverness had been one of our primary targets on our long weekend in Scotland. We had scoped out a shot at Slochd summit but a couple of us had decided an alternative just north of Tomatin was more promising and the light seemed better further north. The charter had gone off it's booked route earlier in the day and was running an hour late but we knew it would have to cross the up Intermodal from Inverness somewhere on the long single line sections of the Highland Mainline. A nervy wait followed once the Intermodal had reported as leaving Inverness but DRS class 66 no.66433 'Carlisle Power Signal Box - 50th Anniversary 1973 - 2023' duly appeared first, seen here passing Invereen with 4D47 13:40 Inverness Freight Sidings to Coatbridge Down Refuge Siding on 8th February 2025.
Unfortunately, this meant that the freight crossed the charter at the next loop south of Moy and because of the overlap arrangements at the crossing points on the Highland Mainline this took what felt like ages. After we had crossed the field to the shot looking the other way there followed a 20 minute wait in full sun until 5 minutes before the charter appeared when the slowest moving cloud gradually turned the lights out for the main event. Of course, not 5 minutes later we were back to full sun. Our friend at Slochd had the opposite luck and the charter powered over the summit in a lucky patch of light, but the freight was bowled by cloud. That's the nature of the beast sometimes!
