DAY 227. 15/8/11
Playing with depth of field a few weeks ago, I took this shot at the Myer Mural Hall. What can I say, I love Bokeh, just as much as I love HDR. More tomorrow.
A beautiful sunset tonight! I was inside working on pictures and the wife called me, telling me the sun was a big red ball. Unfortunately, she was in a different place to see it than I. I did the best I could from where I was. To be perfectly honest with you all..."Holy Shit! I love HDR" (Best Viewed Large +)

I'm posting this for my own selfish reasons.
I've been back into photography now for six months, after taking 20 years off, and have been doing vertoramas since mid January. I've found that they're not easy, especially at 10mm. There is a distortion factor that I wasn't counting on and had no clue about when I bought the Sigma. Anyway, I love HDRs, especially vertoramas, even if it's a made-up word. The reason I'm posting this is that is shows to me that I've come quite a long way in a short amount of time. There is no way, back in January, that I would have been able to shoot, stitch, or process these six shots in such a way that the end result would have looked decent at all. I know that I still have lots to learn, but I'm making baby steps.
Whew. Thanks for listening. Carry on, or continue reading for technical specs.
There are a total of six exposures here. This image consists of two 3-exposure HDRs. The two sets were each tonemapped using Photomatix, with default settings - as always. Resulting two HDR images stitched in Photoshop CS3, with manual adjustments. The blacks and the whites figured out in Lightroom.

I absolutely love HDR photographs. I know they're not to everyone's taste, but I just think they're so pleasing to the eye.
This is my first proper try at HDR, and it's 3 bracketed shots at -2, 0 and +2, merged together and played with in Photomatix.
I took the photographs in Boldon, near my house, whilst out walking with my dog. Whilst the subject matter isn't the most interesting in the world, I'm pleased with the result; it's definitely a technique I'll try again.
After going along the HDR route with some success, I am returning to processing and shooting, LO-FI. I realised that as much as I love HDR, one can sometimes forget the essence of capturing an image. This mini series documents a stay in a bed and breakfast...the kitsch ornament and floral nature of this room adds to the ambiguous, general nature of hotel rooms.

Boy, do I love HDR. Never in all the years that I have spent in this building, have I ever got a shot even close to this.

I thought this was a fun idea. Austin and Anthony gave me a hand with setting up the lights, so nothing was broken this time. I'm really starting to love HDR photos, they're really fun to take. I hope this photo isn't took goofy, I took other ones that looked good as well, I might use them instead.
I figured I would share this new technique I have been messing with in photoshop. I love HDR, even the overly processed ones, there is a place for them too. I was messing around in photoshop and I created a very simple HDR like effect.
Here is the simple tutorial, I also have made an action for it if anyone is interested in it.
BTW, Using PSCS3
Step 1: First open the photo you wish to work with. Then select IMAGE> ADJUSTMENTS> AUTO LEVELS. Now make a copy of the original picture. The bottom layer will be called "background", then "background copy" on top of that.
Step 2: With "background copy" selected go to Layer> New Adjustment layer> Black & White> Infrared. Set layer blend mode to MULTIPLY and then hit ctrl+e to merge it down. Now, make a copy of this layer (it will be named "background layer copy 2")
Step 3: Select the top layer "background layer copy 2" and change the blend mode to "Color Dodge", set the opacity to 50% or whatever looks best to you and then hit ctrl+e to merge it down
That's it!
It works well on some images but not all images.

Without a doubt, I should have been around when Elvis first hit Sun Studios, and when you could take your hot rod to the diner and have waitresses in roller-skates serving you burgers and fries. But on the positive side, I’m in California where there are actually some great looking and close-to-authentic diners.
The Studio Diner is a diner that I first visited over a year ago when I first came to San Diego. It is situated next to the film studio that produced the TV series “Silk Stalkings” and “Renegade”. So upon another visit a couple of weeks ago I decided I had to try shoot it. And boy am I glad I did!
With the exception of the previous post’s California Roll photo, these two photos are the first photos that I’m actually happy with. Although I know there are still plenty of mistakes, I am still happy with the outcome.I love chrome, and I love HDR…together these two come out beautifully. And in black and white with a slight little help from PhotoTools the above photo looks great enlarged. I definitely paid attention to the composition of this shot making sure one’s eyes are lead from the below corners to the centre and main focal point of the frame.
Now it’s time for an Elvis burger with peanut butter and his speciality shake of banana, peanut butter and marshmallow.
Another shot from Saturday in the Lake District. This one from the west end of Ullswater. It is for stuff like this that I love HDR. It would have been near impossible to meter for this shot normally and keep so much detail in the foreground.
It was a quiet morning and I was feeling a little creative so I broke out the 35mm prime, which is broken so I have to manual focus (no huge deal) and bracketed ISO at 1stop intervals, then loaded it into Photomatix. I do love HDR photos, and who says HDR is just for pretty colors, it does an amazing job in monochrome too.
