Oh, I love HDR!!! :)

What do you recommend to eat here?
I used my own advice the other day while walking around Animal Kingdom. Go in a restaurant before they open and get some great shots of it empty. Sure enough at around 10:00 am the park was getting packed with people, but the Yak-n-Yeti was completely empty. They didn't open for another hour. This place has such an amazing interior. I'm not sure where I would want to sit while eating here, but I can tell you it's most likely upstairs...

Is this show better than Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular?
The last time I came to Studios, I decided to go and see this show. I couldn't wait. It had just started to sprinkle as I got in line and thought nothing of it. Then off in the background I could see some amazing flashes and about 30 seconds later and loud boom cracked over head. The rain got more intense, the booms got closer, and the flashes more brilliant. We still moved in...

What is your favorite Disney World Queue?
Still to this day there is one thing that Walt Disney World has that Disneyland does not... Room to Queue! And with that room, imagineers have designed some of the most elaborate and lovely queues. Some interactive, some educational, but all great to look at. The next thing I'm assuming they'll start doing is adding more things to make you hungry as you wait in line. I know hunger took...

A HDR experiment of the rails that bring iron ore out of the mines at Clearwell. I'm not really a fan. Some people love HDR though.
The Tower Life Building is one of the more recognizable landmarks in the San Antonio skyline. It stands up pretty tall and has these nice lights giving it a warm glow at night. I caught this single image last weekend while I was cruising around down there looking for shots. I've always liked architecture so I am always checking out buildings through the lens to see how they look. Though I still love HDR, I am experimenting quite a bit with other types of shots, like macros, bokeh and "plain old" single exposures. It keeps it fresh for me and mixing it up is always fun.

Do you get elaborate masks for Mardi Gras?
In Italy, one of my favorite stops is the Mask Shop. The ornate artistry from this third party vendor fit in perfectly with the spirit of Disney. I had a chance to speak with the Italians tending to this store and found them to be some of the most happy and friendly people I've met in my life. I love the Italians and it reminded me of my time in...

Renault Sport Megane R26 F1 Sits In The Garage Before An Exciting Autumn Track Day
This Megane was sat in one od the pit lane garage at a Renault Sport track day at Oulton Park in the UK i just loved how the floor was wet and needed to capture the moment.
i have applied some subtle HDR processing to this image and other techniques.
Do you "Fall" in love with the Magic Kingdom Decorations?
Once again I was kicked out of the Magic Kingdom. Security was tight after the park had been extended an hour. I didn't want the extension. It meant that I would be leaving the park later than expected and that most people wouldn't be as nice as they usually are at the end of the night for photographers with tripods. Although, the plus side meant that no one else would be lingering in my shots...

Who else is celebrating a birthday today?
Today is a special day for Hollywood Studios. Rock'n' Roller Coaster turns 15. And to top it all off a friend of mine, who works there, shares her birthday with it. I would say go visit her today, but she is smart and took the day off. The coaster, on the other hand, is working on its birthday. It would be interesting to see if Aerosmith shows up today. Interestingly enough, Steve Tyler visits the ride often and...

Have you watched One Man's Dream?
Whenever I am feeling low about my career in Disney or don't think I should keep up with my passion for photography and doing what I do, I make my way to Disney's Hollywood Studios and go straight to One Man's Dream. I take my time to visit the historic displays and challenge my Disney Trivia, but my main focus is to watch the show at the end of the gallery. The show gets me pumped up. It makes me realize that...

What was your best cast member experience?
With it being Walt Disney World's birthday I thought I'd pay tribute to the true reason the parks are such a success. The Cast Members. Not just because I am one, but even when I was a guest for my very first time, it wasn't the rides that captured my heart, it was the whole experience. It was the cast that brought Walt's vision to life and made it what it is today. Cybil here was just one of the many cast members I've met since moving here. Her bright smile and...

The photo above is a 7-bracket HDR that I shot in an alleyway off 1st street south of Monroe. I’ve never really done more than three brackets for my HDR shots, mostly because I shoot a lot of weather and clouds move fast (plus no auto way to shoot more than three yet), so this was a learning experience. I essentially set up my tripod, took a very dark exposure around 2 seconds and then just increased the exposure time until I felt like I had enough brackets.
I also just loved the building itself, the decay, the details in the bricks, the hanging wires…all of it.
You’ll notice some blurriness in this shot. There are lenses called Tilt-Shift that do this kind of thing automatically, but since I don’t own one, I did it post with Photoshop. I am just experimenting with a few new ways to do things, this tilt-shift method of shooting urban scenes was mostly trying to emulate shots by some urban explorer photogs that I follow.
like it…but I’m not sure. I may end up posting a few alternative shots to this scene…one without the tilt-shift and one straight black and white exposure. I absolutely love HDR for many things, but sometimes the original exposure is awesome as well. You’ll see an example later this week when I post an alternate shot of the Hotel San Carlos (posted below this).
Have you been to the Dinoland Boneyard?
The story of Dinoland USA is one of my favorites. This little section of Dinoland is designed for small children to get out their pent up energy from waiting in line or waiting for their parents to get ride a ride because they were too small or even sitting through a performance. This area is great and full of detail that many miss. I don't know of...

Pedernales State Park, TX
My son and I spent the evening shooting the setting sun on the Pedernales River. This is him setting up atop a boulder (again) to get a shot. He loves HDR...
Photographer Notes: Typical 3 exposure HDR (+/-2 ev) with Photomatix plugin for Aperture with a bit more heavy on the processing than I normally do because my son said the first one did not look like an "HDR" (which I took as a compliment ;-). Aperture levels, sharpening, etc.

If you were to get married in the parks, where would you do it?
Every time I wonder into Asia, I love to look around at the buildings and the details that Imagineering took to make the place look and feel the way it would be if I were really in these rural areas of the countries and cultures represented. I especially love the Yak n Yeti restaurant area. This white pavilion always looked like a great place for an outdoor wedding. It's why I...

Are you going o Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party? I want to see your costumes!
Walt Disney World have put on it's fall colors and is ready for Halloween. This year with a celebration of the movie Hocus Pocus. 2 Years too late if you ask me, but that's okay. One thing I love about Disney is how they are able to bring out feelings that you wouldn't otherwise feel. For example, I come from the North West. I have all four...

What do you love about France?
Before coming to Walt Disney World, I looked at people's photos of the parks. One picture that stood out to me was a shot of this area in France in the World Showcase. They never mentioned where it was taken, but only that is was on WDW property. When I came here and set up my tripod for the first time, I found myself in this spot taking pictures. This shot was taken months ago and I wanted to wait for a great time to share it. I love the France Pavilion. I think the area is so true to form. I never hear about...

Have you told your friends about Digital Elegance?
When I left Disneyland in January of 2010, I went through a major withdrawal phase. I couldn't live without Disney in my life. I would go to the stores and see Princess things and see people referencing Disney stuff everywhere. On top of that, I would visit my facebook page which was still full of my past Disney friends and so they would talk about their shifts or talk about it to some degree. I missed it so much. I had to turn somewhere...

About
Photos like this give me reason to love HDR photography - normally you get a silhouette shooting into the sun, but with HDR, you can tease all those subtle shades of green, blue and red out of the foreground while retaining the overall effect.
Technical
A shot of Cheng Chau Harbor, with the fishing fleet all decked out ready for next morning's fishing. 3 shot HDR (-2 2/3 stops to +2 2/3 stops - I figured out this gave the best dynamic range expression for the 7D - -3 to +3 is just too much) processed in Photomatix, Photoshop and Topaz.
At the July 2012 Art Crawl on James Street North in Hamilton, Ontario, a large number of street performers and artists were hawking their wares and displaying their skills. Among all these people, one young lady dressed in a 1950s vintage style, was carrying around a serving tray from which she would present to people, a small brochure promoting an upcoming performance by the local Fringe theatre troupe of a play titled 'Dairy Free Love'. I have no idea about the theme of the play but I suspect that the vintage attire and hairstyle was an allusion to the period in which the play was to be set. She asked for directions to the local CBC location (just a little further along James as it turned out) and was kind enough to stand still for the photo. - JW
The base image was processed using HDR software but since only a single image was used, only the tone-mapping component came into play. Hence the base image is not strictly HDR but, instead is simply tone-mapped. Tone-mapping was chosen to bring out detail that would otherwise be less visible.
This image was taken using a hand-held Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 12-24 lense set to 12mm, ISO800 in full auto mode (no flash), f/4.0, 1/30 sec. The base HDR/T tone-mapped image was produced using Luminance/Qtpfsgui with settings as indicated in the file name as well as in the details shown below. PP in GIMP: the tone-mapped image was placed in the lower layer and the original image in the upper layer, using normal blend mode, transparency of the upper original layer was set to 40%, a new layer was created from the visible result, slight tone curve adjustment were made to obtain a normal looking but soft pastel look resembling a hand coloured photo of the 1940s/50s, sharpened, fine black and white frame added, the bar and text on the left added, scaled to 1024 high for posting.

What do you think the story is here?
One of the things that people seem to miss as they adventure through Animal Kingdom is the little details. The roads have tracks in them of local types of tracks you would find, be it a bike or little car. In Asia the roads and building are just full of these little but profound details. As I was walking along I saw this walkway with backpacks and lanterns and next to the building was this bike. I had to wonder what the story was...

Which park icon is your favorite?
One of my first times in the Magic Kingdom fell on a full moon. I was surprised there weren't more people trying to capture what I saw. Then again this is not an easy shot to get when the moon is so bright. Even then trying to give the moon its full justice versus a crisp and bright foreground is also not easy to do. But I'm glad I got to get this photo on the day I did. Turns out that the full moon was something special. Had you stayed up that night to about 3 am...
