The elusive otter is one of our top predators, feeding mainly on fish (particularly eels and salmonids), waterbirds, amphibians and crustaceans. Otters have their cubs in underground burrows, known as 'holts'. Excellent and lithe swimmers, the young are in the water by 10 weeks of age. Otters are well suited to a life on the water as they have webbed feet, dense fur to keep them warm, and can close their ears and nose when underwater. They require clean rivers, with an abundant source of food and plenty of vegetation to hide their secluded holts.

Out of all the bears I saw in Finland, this female and her cubs were my favourites. On this night I saw them several times; always arriving when no other bears were around, always hyper aware of their safety. They were wild and spooky, she was wonderfully lithe and graceful, the cubs fizzy with energy, tough and unbelievably cute. What magnificent animals they are.

Jama-Coaque, the name originally given to the prehistoric culture occupying northern Manabí Province, Ecuador, during the Regional-Developmental period, (500 bce–ce 500). More recent research has established that the Jama-Coaque tradition represents four phases of occupation beginning around 550 bce and continuing until the Spanish conquest in 1531. Although its territory may have fluctuated over time, it minimally extended along the northern Manabí coast from Bahía de Cojimíes in the north to Bahía de Caráquez in the south. To the east, limited archaeological evidence suggests that Jama-Coaque influence extended to the Andean foothills.

  

Both the costumes depicted on figurines and the evidence of numerous fabric impressions in clay suggest a well-developed textile industry. Feather-working is also depicted on some figurine costumes. Lithic industries included a sophisticated lapidary technology of carved and polished greenstone and jadeite. Obsidian was imported from highland sources near the Quito Basin, and a well-developed prismatic blade industry is present at several sites. Artifacts of cut and polished Spondylus shell were crafted into sumptuary ornaments and may have been traded to highlanders for obsidian. The abundance and standardization exhibited by many of these artifact categories suggest a well-developed craft specialization.

The Toachi River Canyon was formed by the emission of pyroclastic flows, lithic fragments, bombs and pumice from the nearby Quilotoa volcano. In its interior with a fall of more than 100 meters the Toachi river flows towards the Ecuadorian coast. It is a great geographical feature in the form of a gigantic ravine that crosses part of the Illinizas reserve.

In the heart of a vibrant era, music surged through the corridors of time, a palpable force. The air vibrated with its melody, its waves reverberating off the shimmering walls of a vast labyrinth. Doors slowly open, revealing a vision of beauty and audacity.

 

Amidst the shadows, she emerged, her lithe form adorned in a soft darkness. Her movements mirrored the fluidity of the music, as if she danced upon its currents. With an ethereal grace, she caressed the cold metal of an electric guitar, her fingers tracing the strings in a hypnotic ballet.

 

As she played, the notes flowed from her fingertips, weaving a tapestry of sound both delicate and thunderous. They intertwined seamlessly, creating an orchestra of otherworldly harmony that enveloped the space. The stage erupted in a cascade of light, casting fragmented shadows across her captivating body.

 

At that moment, she found herself at the epicenter of a whirlwind of sound and illumination. It was a transformative encounter, one that would etch her into the annals of rock and roll history as a legend of the Story "The Doors."

 

For within the liminal space between the known and the unknown, she had become the embodiment of their enigmatic mantra: "There are things known and things unknown and in between are The Doors."

Nature continues to surprise me almost daily. I happened to look out the window and saw these graceful, lithe clouds reflected in the pond. They seemed joyful, almost like dolphins at play.

Dear Travis,

 

It's now been 4 years since you sent me this treasure of old lithable papers from big USA to small Sweden. This kind act of yours sends a message to all the world - we belong together and should not fight. And for me it's a treasure of old lithable papers I would never get hold of otherwise. This day I have gone through the remaining papers and - as to my ability - have made prints that are supposed to be as streamlined as possible from a given negative. But of course there's always the influence of "human variability" when it comes to snatch point and so forth...

Anyways, I hope you understand my gratitude for this possibility. Have a great rest of the year 2023, Travis and may we have lith contact for many years to come.

Tried some Fomaspeed Variant 313 with lith developer yesterday evening. The results really excited me: a nice slight sepia tone, lots of heavy grain and strong blacks. The paper has a nice finish too. It's fairly cheap and looks great in regular developer as well. Over all, very happy with it!

The settlement of La Atalayita is an archaeological site, whose occupation dates back to the aboriginal period of Fuerteventura, the mahos (people of Berber origin from North Africa who lived on the island before the conquest in the fifteenth century) and has been reused, continuously, by the shepherds after the conquest and colonization of the island.

 

The site occupies an approximate area of 45,045 m2 and is made up of 115 structures of different typologies and complexity, which can be divided into: vaulted constructions, mixed constructions made up of vaulted enclosures with other larger ones, traditional construction, volcanic tube conditioning and other circular constructions whose functionality is still unknown.

 

The first studies carried out in the settlement began in the decade of the 50's and 60's with the Excavations Commissioner Sebastián Jiménez Sánchez, who called it El Saladillo. It is from 1974 when it will be known by the name of La Atalayita, starting in January of that same year the three campaigns of archaeological excavations developed between 1974 and 1977 in charge of Professor Demetrio Castro Alfín. During those years a large amount of archaeological material was collected on the surface, composed mainly of fragments of handmade ceramics with decorations, belonging, according to the researchers, to the aboriginal stage of the island; fragments of plain, popular and lathe-made ceramics, as well as malacological, lithic and bone material. In the cuts made, the same typology of material was extracted, except for some objects such as a metal fragment and a pin of the same material and also some pieces made of shells, polished and with holes, in the shape of a pendant.

 

The singularity of the constructions of the settlement, as well as its location between two protected areas of great natural and cultural value such as Malpaís Grande and Cuchillos de Vigán, make it one of the most relevant sites of the island's archaeological heritage.

El Poblado de La Atalayita es un yacimiento arqueológico, cuya ocupación se remonta a la época aborigen de Fuerteventura, los mahos (pueblo de origen bereber procedente del norte de África que vivía en la Isla antes de la conquista en el siglo XV) y ha sido reutilizado, de forma continuada, por los pastores después de la conquista y colonización de la Isla.

 

El yacimiento ocupa una superficie aproximada de 45.045 m2 y está formada por 115 estructuras de diversa tipologías y complejidad, las cuales podemos dividir en: construcciones abovedadas, construcciones mixtas formadas por el adosamiento de recintos abovedados con otros de mayores dimensiones, construcción tradicional, tubo volcánico acondicionado y otras construcciones circulares cuya funcionalidad todavía se desconoce.

 

Los primeros estudios realizados en el poblado se iniciaron en la década de los años 50-60 con el Comisario de Excavaciones Sebastián Jiménez Sánchez, quien los denomina con el nombre de El Saladillo. Es a partir de 1974 cuando será conocido con el nombre de La Atalayita, iniciándose en enero de ese mismo año las tres campañas de excavaciones arqueológicas desarrolladas entre 1974 y 1977 a cargo del profesor Demetrio Castro Alfín. Durante esos años se recogió gran cantidad de material arqueológico en superficie, compuesto mayormente por fragmentos de cerámicas realizadas a mano y con decoraciones, pertenecientes, según los investigadores, a la etapa aborigen de la Isla; fragmentos de cerámica lisa, popular y a torno, así como material malacológico, lítico y óseos. En los cortes realizados se extrajo la misma tipología de material, exceptuando algunos objetos como un fragmento de metal y un alfiler del mismo material y también algunas piezas realizadas en conchas, pulidas y con orificios, con forma de colgante.

 

La singularidad de las construcciones del poblado así como su situación entre dos espacios protegidos de gran valor natural y cultural como es el Malpaís Grande y Cuchillos de Vigán, lo convierte en uno de los yacimientos más relevantes del patrimonio arqueológico insular.

Bei identischer Entwicklermischung (A+B+E+Wasser 40+40+10+800 ml) und 24 Sekunden Belichtungszeit liegt der Snatchpoint bei etwa drei Minuten (linkes Bild) mit kurzer Nachbehandlung (Lith B 1+100 30 Sekunden) für etwas mehr Farbe in den Lichtern.

Bild rechts 26 Sekunden Belichtungszeit, Lithentwickler zweieinhalb Minuten, gefolgt von Catechol (10 ml + 10 ml Lith B + 5 ml NH4Cl) 2 Minuten. Sobald ein Ammoniumsalz mit im Spiel ist, stellt sich (auch nach Lith E) wieder die bekannte Zweifarbigkeit ein.

 

With an identical developer mixture (A+B+E+water 40+40+10+800 ml) and an exposure time of 24 seconds, the snatch point is around three minutes (left image) with a short post-treatment (Lith B 1+100 30 seconds) for slightly more colour in the highlights.

Right image: 26 seconds exposure time, lith developer two and a half minutes, followed by catechol (10 ml + 10 ml lith B + 5 ml NH4Cl) 2 minutes. As soon as an ammonium salt is involved, the familiar two-tone effect reappears (even after lith E).

 

Lith E verwende ich selten. Es wurde ursprünglich gemacht um die Farbigkeit von Lithprints zu reduzieren oder das Korn akzentuierter darzustellen. Die Papiere, für die es vorgesehen war, werden heute nicht mehr hergestellt.

Was dieses Additiv bewirkt und welche Rolle dabei die Papier-Emulsionen spielen, sei an den Beispielen von zwei Paieren gezeigt, die unterschiedlicher kaum sein können.

 

Zunächst das Ilford Art 300. Dieses Papier ist für den Lithprozeß eigentlich nicht geeignet, weil bei den normalerweise verwendeten Entwicklermischungen kein Lithschwarz entsteht, auch nicht bei sehr langen Entwicklungszeiten, wenig erstaunlich, denn die Emulsion ist der des MGWT zumindest sehr ähnlich.

Bei einem Entwickleransatz von 40 ml A + 40 ml B auf 800 ml Wasser sorgt der Zusatz von 10 ml E (1+4 verdünnt) für eine rasch einsetzende Schwärzung der Schatten nach relativ kurzer Entwicklungszeit (2-4 Minuten).

Die hierbei entstehende Körnigkeit hat nichts mit der Kornstruktur des Negativs zu tun. Die Kornzusammenballungen werden umso intensiver, je höher die Dosierung und je länger belichtet wird. Die Zunahme der Farbigkeit bei längeren Belichtungszeiten fällt hier deutlich geringer aus. Ist mehr Farbe erwünscht, kann natürlich getont werden.

 

I rarely use Lith E. It was originally designed to reduce the colourfulness of lith prints or to accentuate the grain. The papers for which it was intended are no longer manufactured today.

The effect of this additive and the role played by the paper emulsions can be demonstrated using two examples of papers that could hardly be more different.

 

First, Ilford Art 300. This paper is not really suitable for the lith process because the developer mixtures normally used do not produce lith black, even with very long development times, which is not surprising because the emulsion is very similar to that of MGWT.

With a developer mixture of 40 ml A + 40 ml B to 800 ml water, the addition of 10 ml E (diluted 1+4) ensures rapid blackening of the shadows after a relatively short development time (2-4 minutes).

The graininess that results has nothing to do with the grain structure of the negative. The grain clusters become more intense the higher the dosage and the longer the exposure time. The increase in colourfulness with longer exposure times is significantly lower here. If more colour is desired, toning can of course be used.

At the moment this new batch is only available in 8x10 and 20x24 inch. Foma had already announced a few months ago that this batch would be lithable again. Fortunately, this is the case. Based on initial tests, it appears that this paper works completely flawlessly, even with highly diluted formulations and longer development times. For this print, I diluted Easy Lith FT Special 1+18 (25+25+900ml) and developed it for 8 minutes. I am slowly approaching longer development times, but no snowballs have appeared so far. The image colour is much less reddish than in previous years. Some users may regret this, but I myself find the more subtle colour pleasant.

Been kicking the idea for this one around for about a year now. Figured I would take advantage of MOC League to get the motivation to build it actually. Inspired by Anglerfish. Was originally intending to make something more lithe with a lure on it's head, but committed to the chunkier look to accommodate the large maw I ended up going with.

Skara Brae on Orkney is prehistoric gem. Semi-Subterranean houses and workshops make up the site as it stands today. It is an impressive site much visited and intricately studied as it offers to reveal how prehistoric people lived. The site is said to be built into the community midden, or rubbish dump. The soft midden can be shaped and moulded with stones fitting in the voids to make a very safe stable environment for living and working in. Skara Brae is vaunted as the most complete Neolithic Village in Europe. House 5 as labelled in this picture has had a drain and still shows stone furnishings looking like lithic versions of kitchen dressers, a central hearth and a window too. This once inland village is now perilously close to the sea and needs sea defences to maintain the structure from destruction by wind and sea. It was rediscovered in 1850 after a storm uncovered part of the structure.

Its not often one gets this close to an active volcano

 

Stromboli is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily, containing one of the three active volcanoes in Italy. It is one of the eight Aeolian Islands, a volcanic arc north of Sicily.

 

924 m (3,031 ft), rises over 2,000 m (6,500 ft) above the sea floor.

 

Mt. Stromboli has been in almost continuous eruption for the past 2000 years. A pattern of eruption is maintained in which explosions occur at the summit craters with mild to moderate eruptions of incandescent volcanic bombs at intervals ranging from minutes to hours. This Strombolian eruption as it is known is also observed at other volcanoes worldwide. Eruptions from the summit craters typically result in a few short-lasting mild but energetic bursts ranging up to a few hundred meters in height containing ash, incandescent lava fragments and lithic blocks. Mt. Stromboli's activity is almost exclusively explosive, but lava flows do occur at times when volcanic activity is high: an effusive eruption in 2002, the first in 17 years, occurred again in 2003 and 2007.
