The North Sea Canal is a Dutch ship canal from Amsterdam to the North Sea at IJmuiden, constructed between 1865 and 1876 to enable seafaring vessels to reach the port of Amsterdam. It ends at Amsterdam in the closed-off IJ Bay, which in turn connects to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The North Sea averages about 100 m. The beaches and coastal waters of the North Sea are popular destinations for tourists. The Dutch coasts are especially developed for tourism. Windsurfing and sailing are popular sports because of the winds. Because of the strong tides and areas of still water, the North Sea is more difficult to sail than the Baltic or the Mediterranean. Mudflat hiking, recreational fishing, and diving, including wreck diving, are all possible. The North Pier near Wijk aan Zee shown above is a nice fishing spot. Anglers from all over the country come to the North pier. At the beginning of the North pier, just across the restaurant you can do some good sea bass fishing. In stormy weather there is a good catch of fish on the inner side. On the pier there is not really one super spot with fish. One moment there is a good catch across the corner, the other moment there is not, whilst the catch is then good at the fence. Is the fishing bad from the beach because of the cold weather, then some fish can be caught on the pier in the deeper water. Sole, codfish, gurnard, dab, flounder, garfish, sea brass, eel pout, eel, whiting, plaice, pout, sea trout, pollack, twaite, mackerel, and mullet can be catched. Various types you will only catch in summer, but a surprise is not impossible. Avoid the pier with stormy weather, because it can be perilous because of breaking waves.
A photo of the lighthouse at the beginning of the North Sea Canal. It's beautiful walk of 1.5 km to the lighthouse at the North Pier of Wijk aan Zee - Netherlands. It was a lovely sunny day but at the day's end the weather changed dramatically. But I love the deep blue colored clouds in the winter. It was so cold my fingers were frozen. A strong freezing cold wind blew almost my tripod away. No feeling anymore when I pressed my camera button. It was 15 minutes after sunset. Exposure 1 sec. F8.0, ISO80 and -1.66EV it started to rain and later there was hail. I must have shot a 60 photo's but lucky the result is here. Fortunately we (me and my son) could hide in sociable and warm Aloha beach club which is open even during the winterseason.
Brilliant lightning storm that formed just off the coast of Sydney lights up the entire sky and clouds. Single shot capturing 5 lightning bolts

When lightning strikes, a photographer has no choice other than to set up a tripod on a narrow ledge outside his guesthouse balcony ... and hope a strong wind doesn't:
a) Shake the camera
b) Blow the whole thing off the ledge

This slow moving storm from 2008 produced very dangerous lightning near the city of Tirgu Mures, Romania.
Several CG's (Cloud-Ground lightning) struck almost in the same place time after time, so it was easy where to aim my camera. Biggest fear was the risk that I would be struck by lightning, so I took most shots from the entrance of my greenhouse, where I felt more comfortable....

A dramatic moment captured during a stormy night in Genoa, Italy. A powerful lightning bolt slices through the sky, illuminating the dense cloudscape and casting a surreal glow over the city below. The contrast between nature’s raw energy and the steady rhythm of urban life—evident in the glowing streetlights and vehicle trails—creates a striking visual tension. This image is a tribute to the unpredictable beauty of storms and the resilience of the city that thrives beneath them.
First chase of 2024 brought me to the central RGV and ultimately Bosque Del Apache to try out a rental Canon RF 24-105 2.8. Beast of a lens and loved its performance, just not the weight.

Early morning hours of 06/04/2014:
5-image stack of some of the crazy return strokes during a killer lightning show from several nights back.
Waited a bit to show this since I had been posting a lot of photos lately.
Enjoy :)
While the East Coast is having weather worries, the West Coast decided to show-out a little tonight! Darn Solar Flares!
There was an awesome lightning storm last night. I snapped a few really cool photos which made choosing this upload tough...but you really can't beat the lightning bolt and cloud placement in this frame.
Colorado Springs, CO - We got quite a light show this evening and I managed to capture just the tail end of it here in this photograph. I'm sure it would have been much more dramatic earlier but I was distracted with another photo project and wasn't paying attention ...
I wanted to save my favorite and best lightning shot for my last upload. I got incredibly lucky with this shot because I missed almost all the other lightning discharges that were as good as this one. I had my 55-200mm lens on and at 55mm. This isn't the entire bolt, there's some off frame to the left and right.
