Today, An intense electrical storm passed over the Inland Empire. It was a storm of epic proportions, consisting of 3 different fronts. One front was located over Mt. San Jacinto to the southeast and another over Wrightwood to the North and a 3rd over San Bernardino due East.

At work I watched as this system was approaching on the World Radar app on my phone and was hoping to get off work early. But a couple of last minute DVD packages came In and I had to stay till midnight to finish up the color corrections. When I left work and headed east down the freeway towards home the sky was lighting up from everywhere it seemed, and I could see it was way off in the distance at about 40 miles away. I happen to live way off in the distance about 40 miles away, which was convenient, I would be driving right into the storms. I have never had the opportunity to shoot lightning with a tripod before, so I raced home and as I drove I witnessed an amazing and rare occasion. I managed to catchup to the storm during my mad dash home when I got home at around 1:00am I grabbed my camera gear and headed out to a location near-by so that I could get a clear view of the valley. It was challenging trying to shoot 3 storms at once, I was running from one composition to the next, trying to get my timing right. At about 3-5 secs between lightning and thunder means these storms are all close-by. Thunder travels a mile in 5 seconds, so I was right in the thick of it (3-5 miles is a general safety zone) and I was having reservations about shooting at this location because it is relatively flat with nothing for at least a half mile in any direction, I was feeling really exposed out there, but I was determined to get a couple photos of some lightning. This shot was taken from a full size tripod that I setup inside my car. (What a chicken I am) Hehe :)

After it stopped raining, I ventured away from the car a few hundred feet and shot there for an hour or so, all the while keeping myself lower than my camera ( I didn't want to get my ankle caps blown off ). At around 3:00 a.m. a policeman pulled up and put his spotlight on my car. I flashed him with my flashlight a couple of times to let him know it was my car. He twisted the spotlight over toward me and saw I was taking photographs. He immediately turned off the spotlight and the headlights on his car. Apparently he knew something about photography and walked over to ask me a few questions and then ask if he ruined my shot. Cool !!. When we were done chatting he walked off, then turned back and said by the way your in a "No Parking Zone." When I arrived here it was pouring down rain and indeed, there was a sign that said "No Stopping Anytime" not 10 ft from my car.

Ooooops!!! My bad!!! :/

Had the lightningbolts over from when I took them of to make bleez helmet and this is what I came up with.

The helmet is custom sculpted by me and everything except the face is painted by me. The face is from nexoknights but I thought it fit.

We rarely get thunderstorms here. In fact I've been waiting since 2016, since I first learned the art of photography, for a storm close enough and active enough, (not to mention not occurring at 3 am), in order to try my hand at capturing lightning.

Last Sunday night, a large storm edged just close enough for success. These three bolts came down simultaneously during a single 30 second exposure at 11:06 pm. It was the second to last successful frame I took that night, and I was thrilled!

Please don't use this image on websites, blogs, etc. without my permission.

You never know who you'll come across during the wee hours during SHOCKTOBER!! : )

Also for Slider's Sunday. HSS!

I was planning to post a non-sky, non-lake, non-sunrise, and non-sunset photo next, but sorry folks, the amazing sky kept wanting me to take and share photos of it!

After feeding myself to the vicious mosquitoes for over an hour late last night, I got a few decent photos of Lightning Storm #3.

(To the scientists who invented antihistamine, you have my forever gratitude!)

Last night's lightning was so much harder to capture. Unlike the previous two, this one actually produced heavy rain and thunder. The bolts were very infrequent and scattered all over the night sky, so I kept a short focal length hoping to catch something. I took a total of 76 30-sec shots, struck gold with 4, missed a few powerful ones, but no complaints here.

I never knew the sky could be so colorful during a severe T-storm, but it probably has to do with the light pollution over Clear Lake.

However, a couple of times the sky was flashed with a bright and strong green hue, kind of like an aurora hue, and bright red a few times. Unfortunately I was not able to capture any of those.

Wishing you a happy weekend, and my US friends a happy long weekend, though I understand the east coast is having a multi-day rain event!

Still more monsoon excitement.

Another well timed shot of the lightning streaking across the night sky

P.S. Showing off Konoha's beautiful Nerani Lush Pampas Grass, I am using the windy version because for some reason, wind just adds a more dramatic feeling and I love being a drama queen! :p Also titled after the most handsome handsome ever! 8f8 Creation's Once Broken and Forgotten gacha and with most Empty Spaces collection.

Looking north, mid-afternoon across foothills toward higher mountains with heavy rain from an angry dark sky...yet to the south west only thin clouds and a very bright sky. The light a magical mix of dark and light...a delight for shooting, never mind the pesky lightning bolts!

In my 70 years I've been outdoors and scared by lightning bolts several times. They are powerful and arbitrary, you never know exactly when or where they will strike, but it will be explosive, loud, dramatic and terrifying. You can't argue with a bolt of lightning...but you can shoot them. A sturdy tripod and long shutter speed helps!

Going through my archive, I realize I have never shared this photo from the very first Lightning Storm which I have ever successfully captured (single exposure).

The electric storm lasted over an hour - no rain, couldn't hear any thunders - just pure energy with super bright flashing lights and bolts - scary at times!

With luck I have captured two more storms since then: Storm No 2 and Storm No 3.

Many thanks for your kind visit and support; I wish you a happy Tuesday, please stay safe and healthy!

Good Sunday to you all

The Ox was supposed to be the first animal but the Rat tricked him by getting a free ride and landing first in the finish line, as the old tale goes.

I really enjoyed reading that story once upon a time about the symbolism of the Chinese New Year animals.

The Ox may be the second animal but considering how the last year went, we are looking into this with a more positive/neutral attitude.

My one wish is to follow in the example of the Ox, be hardworking and reliable without expecting anything in return. A self reliant and healthy nature.

Happy New Year, everyone. :)

One of those tremondous lightnings that night, Monsoon has definitely started. I felt Nature from a few miles that day.

Sorry for the dust, need to get rid of them before my next lightning :D

Good Sunday to you all

Just another Storm in Maputo, Mozambique!

Since i´m living here, for 2 and a half years now, It is common to contemplate the beauty of the many Lightning Bolt Storms in this season.

This time i had the big luck of getting a far storm, without rain or wind (when i say wind i mean it...normally you can not put your head out of the window under penalty of flying away :) ).

I hope you enjoy a small sample of a true spectacle of nature!

Although a rather weak thunderstorm, the skies were spectaculair on this late afternoon/early evening in May.

I used a strong ND filter, to capture some lightningbolts, but it didn't work out. Almost no lightningbolts and too far away....

This was already the second shelfcloud of the year. A few day's earlier a much more active thunderstorm crossed the western part of The Netherlands. Unfortunately I couldn't chase, because of an illness.....
