We had spent the entire day hiking full Blue John Canyon in the Robbers Roost area of Utah. We exited via Horseshoe Canyon right at sunset and noticed a storm building strength in the distance. As we began driving back, the storm kept moving in our direction. The only problem is that there is absolutely nothing out here on "The Maze" Road for good foreground. Eventually, we just settled on using this doubletrack road for our subject. The storm cell was so active that it provided nice evening entertainment. When the antenna on our vehicle started buzzing with with blue surges of electricity, we decided to pack it up.
July 3, 2018. Insane oppressive heat and humidity fired up some pretty intense storms in the area. Drone - looking south towards Philadelphia

A exhilarating display of nature unfolds as a lightning bolt strikes across the sky, casting a dramatic glow over the Mary River floodplain. This dramatic sunset storm in the Top End is a reminder of the beauty and intensity of mother nature.
This is sort of a more ominous, less dramatic version of the other multi-lightning photo I took later that same night.

Capturing lightning is all about luck & timing...you know, that "being in the right place at the right time" thing?! Usually I am neither, which is what makes this shot even more special...because I wasn't even trying at the time! Funny how that can work itself out...when you stop trying is when something happens. I've often found this to be true in real life as well.
If it looks familiar, it should...it's just a different crop from Second Curtain Sync but this time emphasizing the light show over the Presidio & GGB. Hope you all have enjoyed this San Francisco series as much as I have!

During the Southern Arizona monsoon season in July and August, photographers from around the world come to Tucson to capture these amazing lighting storms. I captured this electrical storm from a hill behind my house. I chase lightning during this time of year with a buddy. We follow the doppler reports on the net...plan our chase strategy and load the gerar up. On a good night there could be 4 or 5 isolated thunder and lighting storms within a thirty mile radius....but some nights the storm cells just won't form...it's a big gamble chasing these storms. But the pay-off is big if you capture some awesome mega bolts. I still use my 33 year old Nikormat FTN with 35mm slide film but I think I'll try the digital this year. The best way to shoot lighting on film is set at Bulb; 5.6; focus to infininity; use a cable release; open the shutter and wait for a bolt to strike ...it's alot like fishing...I sometimes use a lawn chair and have cool drinks while I wait for the shot.

Another shot of the amazing shelf cloud taken in Grand Bend on July 20th. I let it get closer to me for this image. It rapidly picked up ground speed at this point, and I couldn't get back ahead of it for pictures once it passed me.

While on holiday in Florida recently i was lucky enough to witness a stunning lightning storm directly opposite where i was staying. Thankfully i had decided to bring my tripod on holiday too so spent the next hour or so attempting to capture the strikes.
I woke up in the middle of the night by a huge thunderstorm, I got up in a nanosecond and drove under the storm to the sea, there were lightningbolt flying all over the place..
These babies was taken from the backside of the storm I mounted up the FM3a on a small video tripod on the passanger seat of my car and shot about 6-8 minute exposures as long as there was anything worth photographing... I got two photos with big lightningbolts on and this one is my favorite. I decided to no go to wide as I have experience of really small lightningbolts on wideangle photos, this is 50mm (fullframe and unmanipulated)
I used Fuji Velvia 50 Film in my Nikon FM3a camera 50/1.4 lens about 8 minute exposure.

I like to hear what you think. I love creative comments, I have no problem with negative such as long as it's somewhat constructive.
EDIT: 9'th of March 2007, replaced the photo with a better scan (with less jpeg artifacts)
EDIT: 2'nd September 07, added a copyright stamp on the photo and made it too small to use in print, found it on a Chinese picture bureau, with a link right back to the large size on flickr...

A lightly tweaked version of this image was originally intended to be a Crazy Tuesday submission for the Car Details theme that week, but I fell asleep early the preceding Monday evening and failed to complete and submit the post, then real life got further in my way. This is my opportunity to post the image, but in repurposed form.

Five years ago while visiting my Mom and Dad in McNeal, Arizona, Tracy and I were walking around the desert when we noticed this storm coming through the Sulphur Valley. We hurried back to the house to grab the camera and tripod. I'm not that great at capturing landscape images, but I had to try to capture this beautiful storm. I set up for some long exposure to try and photograph one of the many lightning strikes. This is the only image that I was able to catch the lightning and one of the few landscape images that I like. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

One of many storms which form during the night off the coast of Mustang Island. Above it can be seen the constellation of Orion. Nikon D-7000 with Tokina AT-X Pro SD 11-16mm lens.
I am always hoping for opportunities to shoot lightning but they are few and far between, based on where I live. We had some nice monsoonal thunderstorm activity on our five day trip to SE Arizona and one evening a little storm cell cooperated!

Multiple lightning bolts part of an active storm moving up the Texas Gulf Coast. Lights on the horizon are from some of the ships waiting for morning to enter Aransas Pass and Corpus Christi Bay. Nikon D-810 with Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 28-300 lens.
While out attempting to photograph the NEOWISE Comet I also took some shots at some (relatively) nearby lightning storms.
Electrical storms over Hong Kong at the start of summer are always spectacular. The storms are nearly always accompanied by rainstorm warning signals. The signals are used in Hong Kong to alert the public about the occurrence of heavy rain which is likely to bring about major disruptions such as traffic congestion and floods.
