First attempt at capturing lightning in Kabul, Afghanistan

The English Electric Lightning is a supersonic jet fighter aircraft of the Cold War era, noted for its great speed. It is the only all-British Mach 2 fighter aircraft and was the first aircraft in the world capable of supercruise. The Lightning was renowned for its capabilities as an interceptor; pilots commonly described it as "being saddled to a skyrocket".

Built as an F.3, XR728 first flew on 17th March 1965, being delivered to Warton for storage until converted to an F.6 and then delivered to 23 Squadron in November 1967. She also served with 5, 56, and 11 Squadrons and the LTF, finishing her career with the LTF as the Binbrook Station CO's personal aircraft (hence the 'JS' coding on the fin). After retirement she was bought by the Lightning Preservation Group and her final flight was to Bruntingthorpe on 24th June 1988. XR728 is very well looked after by the LPG and performs regular fast taxi runs on the long runway at Bruntingthorpe airfield.

|| Lightning makes no sound until it strikes ||

I got lucky with the lightning today. I caught it 3 times! It took a lot of tries though.

We were under a tornado warning... I was outside anyway so I decided to grab the camera.. It was my first lightning picture.

Earth didn't want this lightning bolt, so it threw back up at the clouds.

Lightning from a storm at sea

Lucky catch... I like trying to shoot lightnings. I set up the camera to open during 8s for this one, and i was lucky enough to have a lightning in the frame.

Sooo, might be some lightning pictures of variable quality coming up...

Lightning strike in Garden City, SC

Too bad most of the lightning that night was above the clouds but caught a couple

Lightning out front - This was shot from my garage, so much light around, it is hard to keep the camera open for a long exposure. This was one of about 300 pix I shot.

The left and right whelks pictured here are Lightning Whelks. The center is a Channel Whelk. Note that the Lightning Whelks are "left-handed" (sinistral) where-as the Channel whelk is right-handed. The Lightning Whelks are extremely rare to NJ and normally aren't found North of the Carolina's. These two were found on Jersey beaches and are w/out a doubt Jonas driven.

Lightning Whelk is the State shell of Texas.

New Jersey's State shell is Knobbed Whelk (1995) which is right-handed.

Lightning Whelks were considered "magic" by Native Americans and have been found in the Burial Mounds along the Mississippi River. Obviously they were traded.

English Electric Lightning XN 776 at the Museum of Flight East Fortune Scotland. Built in 1962 as a Mk F.2, modiified to F.2A standard in 1965, this aircraft spent most of its operational career with 92 Sqn RAF Germany.

There was a really wild lightning storm that blew through last week. I took my camera and tripod and tried to get a few shots. For the first time I was able to get some lightning shots because it was pretty wild. I packed it in when it started to rain and get a bit too close for my taste.

A lightning storm passed close to me last night.

Taken at RAF Museum Hendon, on 28 Dec 2011 (GMT).

Lightning is 3 years old and a British Shorthair Lilac cross. He came to the rescue centre with his 6-year-old friend Snowy because their owner is pregnant and felt she wouldn't be able to cope. They are both gorgeous and I'm delighted that they've already been reserved and will stay together when they go to their new home. Lightning in particular absolutely loves a fuss. If you stop stroking him and turn your attention to Snowy he reaches out with his paw and touches your face very gently as if to say 'When you've finished, please come back to me'. I have a feeling they were named with the tiniest touch of irony. Lightning is large, placid and extremely laid back ... I couldn't imagine him running for anything. Snowy, of course, is black. :))

The second lightning-related worthwhile photo that I captured, a few minutes after the previous photo that I posted on Flickr!

Lightning Strikes out to see off the coast of Drogheda

Lightning over my house. Modbury Heights, South Australia. From a video taken on my mirrorless camera, the lines are probably to do with the shutter.

A stormy night on Lake Dunlap gave me a chance to try out the new Nikon on some lightning shots

I used a cable release and a tripod to hold the shutter open on this dark night, sometimes as long as 60 seconds as I waited for lightning to happen.

A high f-stop ensured good focus, as I had no idea where the lightning might come from.

Lightning behind the Louisville Medical complex. This was my first ever attempt to get lightning photos. This was taken with a Tamron 10-24 F 3.5-5.6 lens. This set was taken of the receding edge of the storm.

A brief thunderstorm somewhere north of Vantaa. Considering how hot this summer has been it’s surprising how few thunderstorms there have been.

Lightning storm in White Bear Lake, Minnesota

I've been trying to capture lightning for years without success. Last night I captured my first strike - and although it's not exactly what I had in mind (and not very impressive!) it's still a tick in the box for me. This strike was in the bottom right corner of the frame and very small - hence the low-res cropped image.

Remote shutter trigger set to take a 1 second exposure every second.
