Lightning struck a tree two doors down from my house and ruptured a gas line, igniting a fire. The lightning also nocked a large wooden clock off the wall nearly landing on my dad. The fire martial was a half mile away and thought for sure it was closer than that. I was evacuated about 1 hour and 40 min later we. Xcel Energy had just arived to turn off the gas line.
Im not sure if this is impressive, or scary. I'm leaning toward the latter interpretation.
This is the first time I have ever captured lightning bolts on camera. The irony is that I wasn't even using a "real" camera, but rather, an iPad.

Also appears at the Capital Weather Gang.

Lightning storm over Evanston, IL on 10/2/06
Note, if you will, the thin bolt of lightning extending down into the courtyard of our building.
I can't be positive this isn't some kind of light anomoly, but when I examined it closely it seems to be genuine, and not a reflection of another bolt.
UPDATE: Reading a comment from another user, ecl58, he says there are tiny lightning strands called "streamers" that start from the ground and go up to the sky, connecting with downward-traveling strands called "leaders". If this light in the courtyard is a streamer, then my ears are fortunate it didn't connect with the leader, which could have brought a major lightning strike just feet from where I stood, (shooting through the closed window).
St Albans Cathedral. Is there a lightning conductor flickr group? Not generally conducive (ought that be conductive?) to photography, except perhaps here. There is an internet reference to the firm being at 5 Philpot Lane EC3 in the city of London in 1909, here relating to repairs to St mary in Wanstead , Essex,London E11.
I love the word EXPERTS.
The firm is now based in Witham in Essex, having been founded before 1835 as seen here

Crappy and noisy photo, handheld, from the window of a plane. But it was cool to see the show, it was popping-up all around :)
