This was really an incredible sight watching fireworks from a far with an intense lightning storm in the background. July 4th, 2018

No where near the quality of a lightning picture I'd like to take someday, but it's a start! I sat on the roof of my truck for 30 minutes trying to take this while my dad made fun of me. Safe, right?

I think this is the 3rd time I tried to capture a lightning bolt on camera. We were in the middle of a couple of thunderstorms, so I had some time to experiment. I think I took around 200 pictures, 4 of which contained a clear lightning bolt, and this is the only decent one...

I started by using the wide angle lens, to increase the chances of capturing something, but I think that requires a more serious thunderstorm (or group thereof) and an open field. The 2 captures I caught with the wide angle were very weak.

After I evaluated the results with the wide angle, I decided to use my sigma 30mm lens instead, also since it can go down to f/1.4. I decided to put the iso at 200 (400 is too noisy already under these conditions) and use an f stop of f/2 (I find that opening up the aperture even more images tend to get pretty blurry, though in this case f/1.4 might have worked, maybe next time :)). After some fiddling around I decided on an exposure time of 1/25 s.

I'm sure others know better, but I always like to start with reinventing the wheel myself. It makes you much more aware of the problems at hand and makes subsequent information much easier to digest.

A single 8s exposure of some lightning activity in Tucson, looking south towards Davis Monthan AFB. These three all discharged at just about the same time.

I created a short slideshow of most of the activity from this cell:

Towards the end of April, we got a pretty active thunderstorm with plenty of lightning and very heavy rain. We enjoyed the storm until late in the evening when we found a puddle of water in the laundry room. No damage, but we never did figure out where the water came from.

lightning storm headed straight towards our house... and my attic window ;-) (15-08-2012)

... as dark clouds slowly drifted in, the sky became darker and darker. at first it just looked like a heavy raincloud, but as the front came closer you suddenly could see the lightning flashes behind this first cloud.

flashes every 5 seconds, most of them inside the higher clouds, suddenly a gust of wind and the rain started, more and more lightning flashes became visible and reached out of the clouds.

Heh - I've always wanted to capture a photo of lightning, and yesterday I finally got the chance. Of course, irony being what it is, the storm that produced the lightning also took out our Internet connection, thus preventing me from uploading the result to Flickr untli now ...

The English Electric Lightning was the ultimate cold war interceptor, basically 2 massive engines in as streamlined a shape as possible. The Lightnings job was to get to incoming Russian bombers as fast as possible. It had a tremendous rate of climb but limited range as unlike modern fighters it wasn't designed as a multi-role aircraft.

There was a massive lightning storm about four miles away, so i could not resist busting out the camera! The only bad thing is that there is about a three second delay, so it was a pain in the boo-ta to get a shot of lighting.

Lightning over Zlatibor on June 25th 2014

My first attempt at capturing lightning during a storm.

This is probably the best shot of six I managed to capture. I took just over 400 photos in around 60 minutes to get this picture!

No post-processing has been done.

Lightning behind the mountains outside Buis

Small lightning storm came over and I managed to get a few shots of the lightning before it passed and turned to rain only.

This crack of lightning made me jump! It was so close!

Lightning MacQueen, Cars.

When I first started shooting lightning from this storm, it was scattered in about 3 distinct areas from where I could see.

Earlier, the sun had just set, so there was still a little color to the sky.

This concept, which shows the attraction fairly close to its final form compared to other concept art, shows the canyon race area, the gas station canopy and the circular entrance building. Notice the attraction is here named 'Cars Road Rally Racers', features the Dinoco dinosaur on the gas station roof and uses an alternate rock formation - the Radiator Cap (as seen towering behind Radiator Springs in the film) rather than Willy's Butte. Lightning McQueen, Doc Hudson and Sally are featured as the ride vehicles.
