This exercise helped me to see the edges defined by shape and color. My main struggle was simplifying the shapes. Next time I would force myself not to shade within a shape. Buy, that takes discipline :-)

Finally I must say that I don't talk with my inner critic, but in the end, I really appreciate all exercises because in a very simple way make me see buildings differently, in a more accurate way and feels good step out from our comfort zone.

After Saturday's Sydney Urban Sketchers at the Botanical Gardens it was just too tempting not to sketch the same monument that Liz had sketched in her demonstration (and no sun on Sunday to do another one).
My name is Margaret Williams. I am a single mom of these 2 beautiful girls, ages 3 & 5. We currently live in Mooresville, NC, on Lake Norman. I attended UNC as an undergrad, originally from '92-'96 but decided to get married instead of finishing my degree. Big mistake!! Here I am, 11 years later, tying to finish what I started.
Pictured here are my daughters and my dog, Jill. I just love this picture that I took last summer while on my dad's boat ( in the background) for reasons that I cannot really explain. They were all lined up on one of the seats, looking at the water when I took this. It was adorable!
My experience with photograhy has been just like what you see here. I usually take pictures of my family and friends only at parties and event or holidays. I do not really have a favorite photographer because I have never really had the interest and with 2 small children and a Jack Russell Terrier, who has the time?
Anyway, I am looking forward to learning how to become better at taking pictures for those special events and holiday parties.
I hadn't done a blind contour drawing in a very long time so this was good fun and definitely something I should do more often. The drawing at the bottom was my first go at the continuous line drawing but I got carried away and kept lifiting my pen so I started that one again! #lesson1 #lesson1boxes
I've not done a continuous line drawing of such a complex subject before (and never of a building). This was fun and I enjoyed the challenge of not being able to lift my pen. I think it was a good way for me to loosen up a bit. #lesson1 #lesson1manly
Both the butterfly and dove patterns are found at the bottom of this page: Lesson 1
Dove pattern is by JoAnn Stearns, The Silver Shuttle
Abstracting shapes was good fun and I found it really helped me to switch of the bit of my brain that wants to identify the objects I'm drawing. I still wanted to add some of the extra lines but resisted!
Constructing volumes was probably my favourite exercise so far because I got to put everything together more accurately. All the earlier exercises obviously fed into this one because they really helped me get to know what I was drawing before diving into this.

I thought this was a great photo, lots of depth in the landscape. The photographer asked to have the colors brought out some, so I used the regular lasso with a feather of 3 pixels and selected different portions of the photo and applied some contrast, brightness and a bit of color balance here and there.
I used the magic wand to select the sky, and I included the branch in the right...then deleted these. I used some clouds from gwennie2006's tutorials and adjusted it to fit. I desaturated the color some from the cloud photo to try and make the tone fit better. The strong perspective in the clouds seem to fit pretty good, and the texture was easier to blend in. I added a touch of blue and green to the water too.
Thank you so much RancescaM for letting me work on your beautiful photo.

I think I understood this part. I think of it as cross sections of objects, or the footprint of something.
