Really enjoying the control of having the solid volumes underneath. Can be bolder with the ink which is the fun part.

Lesson 1 - Pen and ink with spot color and Watercolor Pencil Draw and shade and more supplies. In the top drawing on the table was a pen and ink with one spot of color and restrained myself from adding more. Bottom is a new technique of using watercolor pencil to draw and shade and add matching watercolor on top. It's new to me and I like and will try with the graphite watercolor pencil later. On page 7, I made a list of supplies that I felt was necessary for plein air sketching.

Catching up with SketchingNow Buildings homework. These were done from a photo reference - practicing continuous line, abstracting shapes, and constructing volumes. Read more about it on my course notes blog at : jblodget-buildings.blogspot.com/2016/09/lesson-1-manly-ch... .

#lesson 1 - A couple of goes of this were needed as a bit wonky.

I used the LAMY pens for the first time. The EF nib is not my fave at this stage but M nib (with blue ink) is very smooth.

The water soluble graphite pencil is great - looking forward to using it more.

Authentic Thai cooking classes in North Saanich on Vancouver Island.

I'm starting a new class with Liz Steel called Edges. The first exercises called for drawing the edges where there is a change of plane (top drawing) and a change of color (bottom). I'm pretty comfortable with drawing the contour shapes of objects, but I need to warm up first. The second drawing was better. I drew the edges of the black shapes first in the second drawing and then the brown, the gray box and shadows. The front shoe got wonkie because I drew the complicated black first and then connected the brown shapes, but it was an interesting experiment in seeing the connecting shapes of colors.

teaching our dog Sam how to swim

I loved doing this, though I made a right mess! This was my second attempt, as I rushed my first attempt too much.

I need to work on my watercolour (and watercolour paper would probably help).

With this technique, I feel like I've learned a new way of drawing buildings that's quick and makes for really nice little drawings.

I'm just using Prang watercolor for now, thinking it would do for now. Will start looking for suitable watercolor kit next.

I started on online journal sketching class with Jane LeFazio this week. It is challenging and stretching me. I just finished my assignment for the week. Pshew!

This is my first serious exercise with the soluble graphite pencil which I am happy with. Liz, I do love this pencil.

I decided to put watercolour on the sugar pot only as I like the graphite with water so much. I intended mixing a dark charcoal using raw umber and ultramarine - with mixed results as you see. It was more blue to start with than I intended. Added a warm shadow to see what it would look like.

I learned a lot from this exercise as I'm so new to watercolour paints and the nature of pigments. I was struck by two things; one is the intensity of the pigments which I suppose is linked with buying what I understand to be good quality paints. The other is the immense range of shades of the way through the mixing. On the grid, some mixes in one direction look different from the same blend in another direction.

I guess some things can never be repeated exactly.

Drawing my supplies. I really do prefer regular brushes to a waterbrush, but usually take a waterbrush for on the go. My nylon pack-it bag holds everything I need, including my Moleskine journal.

New Blue Mary-Jane's

I find that I enjoy working slowly and carefully. This was drawn directly in ink without any set up. I can see how much I've improved since the Foundations course. The back shoe suffers from the interference of the object brain at bit around the top section, but overall I'm happy with this for starters.

This exercise was a challenge! I loved the concentration required to create the large shapes. But I got totally confused when trying to do the laces. More practise needed! I ended up drawing all the laces and then removing the shoe lines with a white pen.

I do have a few brushes, some of which are just for spreading gel medium and gesso, acrylic paint or alcohol inks. The two I have drawn are favourites - water brushes and my Mother's old sable brush which holds a prodigious amount of paint.

Ink drawing and watercolor pencil drawing of items on table

Pen and ink with one colour wash. I learned that whilst I prefer pencil setup, I can do without it in a sketching exercise. I also reinforced (from Sketchbook Skool 'Seeing') that looking at things consciously and slowly makes a great difference to the outcome. The neck of the milk bottle would have benefitted from another good look.

I am a self-confessed pen junkie!

I noticed in this exercise that I have always had reasons that I preferred using each pen for particular purpose but have never compared how they feel in the hand. I have found that the ZIG nibs tend to outlast the Copic pens but this time I noticed that the ZIG is smoother to use. Then I came to the Rotring pens which I don't use a lot - but will do so now. They are very smooth.

These new Faber-Castell pencils feel very familiar as I've been using Derwent water soluble pencils for a long time, however. these ones, recently purchased are a step up. This exercise explored a mix of the familiar and the new with the translucence and intensity of pigment being different from what I'm used to.

I bought the e-book version of Pam Carriker's "Creating Art at the Speed of Life" a few months ago and decided to add it to my "to do" list for 2014.

Lesson 1 was to create a color wheel with water colors....my reds seem to be more orange than red so when I combined blue and red, I got a nice warm 'brown'. Bummer!! So from now on I will just use the violet that is provided in the sets!

#lesson1 - learning to use my materials by drawing some Bindweed

Authentic Thai cooking classes in North Saanich on Vancouver Island.

New Mary Jane's, just the planes

I found the thinking about drawing planes made the task almost impossible. So I came back to this exercise thinking about surfaces instead, and it made much more sense to me. The rear shoe is a little too short, but otherwise I'm happy to get this far after a wobbly start

Another familiar/unfamiliar journey. My Mother was a painter so this has always been "her territory" however the names of the colours are so familiar. She used to paint on the kitchen table and dip her brush in the tea! We had lots of laughs and she talked about what she was doing but I never really held a brush loaded with paint. This exercise was quite an adventure overall.

-- Snapt Ge, Bhai ?! --, door Akka Mahadevi.

Bhai, ge zult wel zijn gekomen

verleid door mijn gewelfde borsten,

gij, wellustig jochie !!

English version:

Brother, you’ve come

drawn by the beauty

of these billowing breasts,

this brimming youth.

I’m no woman, brother, no whore.

Every time you’ve looked at me,

Who have you taken me for?

All men other than Chennamallikarjuna

Are faces to be shunned, see brother.
